opening:Atelier in de stad_
25.04.2024  / 17:00

Op donderdag 25 april om 17.00 zal de burgemeester Roel Wever het nieuwe ‘Atelier in de stad’ openen. Vanaf deze plek, ín het station in Heerlen, gaan we aan de slag met kunstenaars om hun werk te ondersteunen en vanuit hun perspectief de stad te bekijken. Dit kan zich uiten in verschillende vormen; de kunstenaar die de stad verkent, verhalen van mensen verzamelt en ter plaatse tekeningen maakt of kunstenaars die zich laten inspireren door architecturale elementen of de verschillende geschiedenissen. Op deze manier willen we verschillende perspectieven delen met de stad, haar inwoners en bezoekers. De nieuwe locatie, die we kunnen gebruiken door de samenwerking met NS Stations, biedt daar de mogelijkheid voor.

We willen graag de visie van de verschillende kunstenaars op de stad delen en daarom tonen we sinds onze oprichting kunst in openbare ruimtes. Denk aan onze projecten op grote billboards of op vlaggen verspreid in de stad en de regio (zie: What the flag?! ). Vaak maken we gebruik van tijdelijk leegstaande winkelpanden of etalages. Eerder hebben we in onze etalage aan de Nieuwstraat in Hoensbroek onder de noemer “Display” kunst getoond uit musea en privéverzamelingen uit de regio. In 2021 hebben we tijdens Cultura Nova het werk van twaalf verschillend kunstenaars gepresenteerd in het een route langs etalages in het centrum van Heerlen onder de noemer ‘Night Shift‘. Het eerste ‘Atelier in de stad’ vond plaats in 2022/2023 in een ruimte aan het Maanplein, dit werd een plek waar verschillende kunstenaars hebben kunnen werken en elkaar konden ontmoeten.

De eerste kunstenaar die het Atelier in de stad gaat gebruiken is Ward Willems. Hij zal het gebruiken als uitvalsbasis en ontmoetingsplek om verhalen van mensen in het centrum te tekenen.

De opening vindt plaats op donderdag 25 april om 17:00 in het Atelier in de stad (in het Maankwartier aangrenzend aan de NS stationshal).

& afsluiting expositie Pharmakon
Talk II communities 21.04.2024 /13:00-15:00

(NL) Zoef Mashaldina organiseert als afsluiting van haar residentie bij Greylight Projects de expositie Pharmakon. Deze opent op 23 maart met een festival en zal aansluitend tot 21 april geopend zijn als expositie met een aanvullend publieksprogramma. Dit event is de derde van vier events van het publieksprogramma.

Als afsluiting zal er op zondag 21 april om 13:00 een tweede Talk georganiseerd worden.

Talk II: Waar begint en stopt gemeenschappelijkheid? Op zondag 21 april om 13:00 uur zal de tweede talk plaatsvinden.

Deze talk zal een discussie zijn rondom de noodzaak maar ook de grenzen van gemeenschappelijkheid. Binnen de kunstwereld, maar ook daarbuiten wordt steeds meer gesproken over het belang van gemeenschap. Of moeten we het hebben over een collectief of community in plaats van over gemeenschap? En zit daar verschil tussen? Vaak worden deze gevormd als oplossing voor een bepaald probleem. Zeker in de huidige tijd lijkt het een nodig alternatief voor een samenleving die steeds individualistischer wordt. Maar wat is een gemeenschap eigenlijk?

[EN] School of Love organizes an arts laboratory on kinship, friendship and the speculating of new family alliances. The five day workshop Togethermess in BUDA is accompanied with two semi-public moments: Deep Hanging Out in BUDA and an evening presentation in Beursschouwburg.

[EN] sphex center ((0)) is an exhibition by Elipeo. A project inscribing itself in the mass archive of history and ideal body imagery, a civilisation mastered by sex-shops, genetic engineering and overpopulation.

[EN] Dannie.p is composed and printed by desespiegles on the risograph. The artists-architects duo took form along a poetic exchange of vidéolettres. Jolien Naeyaert and Anne Philippe distilled this intimate material from the Covid era and turned it into a haptic and playful book that reflects their way of working.

[NL] Dannie.p is gecureerd door Jolien Naeyaert en Anne Philippe en gedrukt met de risograaf. Het kunstenaars-architecten duo desespiegles vormde zich doorheen een reeks vidéolettres in de Covid periode. Dannie.p biedt een nieuwe blik op hun intieme uitwisseling, als boek object dat hun poëzie en speelse manier van werken reflecteert.

Der NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein freut sich anlässlich der Ausstellung THANK GOD GOD IS DEAD des Künstlers Monty Richthofen gleich zwei neue Editionen präsentieren zu dürfen.

Die beiden Siebdrucke erscheinen jeweils in einer Auflage von 66 Stück plus 10 AP, signiert und nummeriert, je 14,8 x 21 cm, jeweils 50 Euro. Die Prints können gleich hier bestellt werden:

Die Drucke werden zurzeit produziert und anschließend vom Künstler signiert und nummeriert; mit dem Versand ist Ende April bzw. Anfang Mai zu rechnen.

Monty Richthofen (* 1995 in München) studierte Performance und Design an der Central Saint Martins University of the Arts in London. Seit seinem Abschluss im Jahr 2018, fordert er die konventionelle Poesie intensiv heraus, wie beispielsweise durch die malerische Visualisierung von Texten, dem Schreiben im öffentlichen Raum oder dem handschriftlichen Tätowieren. Richthofen lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

For the past four months, Dóra Benyó has been a resident at Air Berlin Alexanderplatz, delving into the East European historical backdrop of the city, exploring memories, and fostering new encounters. As Benyó’s residency draws to an end, she is organising two public presentations at Uqbar, where she will develop a performative program with storytelling, interactions, readings, video and painterly installations. This promises to be both the culmination and continuation of her research. We hope to see you there!

Three Categories 

LIVE radio show hosted by Dóra Benyó in collaboration with 
Office for Joint Administrative Intelligence

Haus der Statistik |  Tuesday, 23 April, 7–8 pm

Three Categories is a collaborative radio performance featuring Dutch/Hungarian artist Dóra Benyó and the Belgo-German artist duo Office for Joint Administrative Intelligence (O.J.A.I.), composed of Chris Dreier and Gary Farrelly. Central to the piece are the declassified secret police files compiled after the surveillance of Benyó’s grandfather, an academic and political activist during Hungary’s communist era. The title of the work stems from the categories of loyalty to the state citizens were classified into at the time.

 

Benyó’s collaboration with O.J.A.I. reimagines the architecture of the state archive, transforming it into a conceptual space representing totalitarian overreach through the excessive production of knowledge. O.J.A.I. contributes to this transformation by creating paranoid organizational atmospheres, conveyed through a series of fictional texts and modular sound compositions.

ABA is mindful of the saturation of ‘new’ publications in the context of material production. Therefore, we would like to challenge this idea together with the presentation of our archive of publications at Ko-Markt at Haus der Statistik  We propose a discussion on the recontextualization of bookmaking, book showing, and book honouring.

ABA BOOKSTOP is a container-turned-reading room located at Alexanderplatz where visitors can access artists’ reading materials and artist publications. It aims to provide a space for reflection with regards to artist publications and offers a monthly collection of reading material on a specific topic in a free setting.

New Scores imprint: Sam Cottington’s Phone Plays

Phone Plays is the first publication in Scores, a new imprint co-commissioned by Montez Press and London Performance Studios that publishes scripts and performance texts by artists, theatre-makers and performance-makers working between the visual and theatrical arts. Intended to be performed live over the phone, Sam Cottington’s Phone Plays invite readers and audience members alike to engage with a series of unclear relationships and scenarios, invoked and mediated by contemporary communication technology.

Sam Cottington is an artist and writer living between London and Frankfurt. Through interdisciplinary experiments in collage he often presents “reality” as contradictory and mutable; the product of specific historical and social economies. The production and trajectories of the theatre, the family, and desiring subjectivities are recurrent in his practice, often culminating in devised interventions which address their formal capacities as well as their audiences expectations. His first book ‘People Person’ was published by JOAN, and he’s presented work in London and internationally at Ginny on Frederick (London), Zaza (Milan), and Yaby (Madrid).

London Performance Studios is a queer container for the research, generation, and promotion of artistic voices that meet in the space between the white cube of the gallery and the black box of the theatre. LPS seeks to queer artistic process, operating within radically transparent and intersectional structures. We champion the politics of making a scene, whether on stage or out in the world.

About the book

Red Roses shows the extraordinary artistic practice of this internationally acclaimed London-based artist and winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome 2015. The publication features a range of recent works.

Magali Reus (b. 1981, The Hague) has been creating hyper-realistic sculptures for more than a decade. She represents, redefines, enlarges and deforms everyday objects in various materials and using surprising combinations of digital, manual and industrial processes.

Reus’s work explores our relationship with utilitarian objects and the inextricable context of consumer society. Her virtuoso objects appear functional, but do not explicitly reveal what their function actually is. By investigating our relationship with objects, Reus is looking for a strategy to critically interrogate the production and consumption processes of our society.

We’re in full Oscillation preparation mode, beneath green canopies: in less than three weeks our yearly sonic buffet kicks off, and we do have some goodies that will put you in the perfect mood: on Thursday our interns Maria Margolina and Emilia Elouardi served the taste platter to the festival at Kiosk Radio, on Sunday they are doing this at our HQ. The last post-residency fruit to be reaped before the festival will be by a performance by Reuben da Rocha, presenting his research on live mixing techniques for multichannel sound environments.

Part tasting plate, part road map, the annual festival special serves up a bounty of tracks from artists participating in this year’s Oscillation Festival. Following his research on live mixing techniques for multichannel sound environments, Reuben da Rocha will be presenting a short sample-based composition, sharing his take on the dynamic possibilities of non-synchronized sound sources and non-linear listening perspectives, while approaching the concept of installation as a perception mode for live performance.

The 2024 festival Oscillation ::: Materia Forma is a reflection on form, format and performance. Éliane Radigue – Intermediary Spaces / Espaces intermédiaires – Julia Eckhardt

Éliane Radigue (born 1932 in Paris) is considered one of the most innovative and influential contemporary composers. From her early electronic music through to her acoustic work of the last fifteen years, she unfolds an intensity which is at once subtle and monumental. Through her deep reflections on sound and listening, not only her music but also her working methods have come to shape a widely resonating set of new parameters for working with sound as musical material.This second extended edition of the book on composer Éliane Radigue adds a new chapter to the otherwise unchanged conversations which made the body of the first edition, published in 2019. Join us on Friday the 19th of April for  for a program of performances and talks, a micro book fair, a live tactical television broadcast, and a club night at OT301 in Amsterdam! 

From cloud to matter, from thought to cables, from light to meaning, from void to being. Our internet-connected devices hold an unprecedented power to multiply us into a manifold of realities. The conventional way to conceptualize this is segregational – we “space-out” and we’re in cyberspace. However, the escapist “spacing-out” is only one part of the picture. Let’s space-in.

Anton Cotteleer (°1974, Kapellen) lives and works in Kalmthout (BE). He is mainly known for the combination of modelled human and animal fragments and deconstructed domestic objects. He is interested in the relationship of humans and animals to the domestic biotope.
Ambiguities and dualities keep the work in a gray zone. Eroticism, innocence, mysticism and banality each claim their presence but are always negated by each other. Visual and content contradictions set the tone. As a result, the works are rarely explicit and remain partially elusive. In addition to memories from the collective memory, the sculptures also contain autobiographical traces; memories, whether or not fueled by personal photo material.
 
Simona Mihaela Stoia (°1982, RO – lives and works in Ottenburg & Overijse (BE). She studied law in Romania and subsequently obtained a Masters degree in painting at KASK in Ghent, where she currently teaches. In her layered paintings with very different colour registers, she creates a tension between intense, passionate brushstrokes and calm, reasoned surfaces. She models volumes that evoke the image of body parts, animals or plants against an abstract background. In this way she builds paintings that are at the same time sensual, mysterious, compact, open and bold.

Der NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein freut sich die Ausstellung THANK GOD GOD IS DEAD des Künstlers Monty Richthofen präsentieren zu dürfen. Die Ausstellung eröffnet am morgigen Samstag, den 06. April 2024 um 19 Uhr.

In der ersten institutionellen Einzelausstellung lädt Monty Richthofen, alias Maison Hefner, zu einer Reise durch die Tiefen des Bewusstseins ein. Geboren aus den Zeilen seiner Biografie und geformt durch die Schichten des Weltgeschehens, strebt seine Kunst danach, nicht nur die Grenzen zwischen Text und Bild zu verwischen, sondern auch die Betrachter_innen in eine introspektive Sphäre zu führen, in der der Tod nicht als Tabu, sondern als unvermeidliche Teilhabe an der menschlichen Existenz betrachtet wird.

Richthofen konzipierte eigens für die Ausstellung eine neue multimediale Installation. So erheben sich inmitten des ersten Ausstellungsraumes wie stille Wächter drei Sarkophag-ähnliche Kapseln, die den physischen Zustand der Betrachter_innen verändern und sie in eine Welt des Fühlens und Wahrnehmens entführen. Von der Decke hängen Kopfhörer herab, die eine Soundarbeit mit Richthofens Aphorismen wiedergeben, welche in Zusammenarbeit mit Yasmina Dexter (alias Pandora’s Jukebox) entstanden ist. Ebenfalls von einer Soundarbeit begleitet, offenbaren sich im zweiten Ausstellungsraum sieben Leuchtkästen, in denen die Schriftbilder des Künstlers, übersät mit Zensur und Übermalungen, kaum noch lesbar sind.

Monty Richthofen (* 1995 in München) studierte Performance und Design an der Central Saint Martins University of the Arts in London. Seit seinem Abschluss im Jahr 2018, fordert er die konventionelle Poesie intensiv heraus, wie beispielsweise durch die malerische Visualisierung von Texten, dem Schreiben im öffentlichen Raum oder dem handschriftlichen Tätowieren. Richthofen lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

Nouvelle exposition

Chez Annabelle Guetatra, traits et couleurs chorégraphient des bals de sirènes dénudées s’hybridant aux sèves, aux eaux, aux poulpes. Roxane Métayer compose une symphonie de céramiques aux formes de spores, de racines. Sabrina Montiel-Soto glane des objets, des images, des séquences, des sons. Pour livrer des aphorismes cosmiques, des vidéos envoûtées. Marie Van de Walle cultive des micro-organismes pour les déployer sur différents supports en floraisons et accumulations de formes.

Foto: op 7 maart hesen we Flag #5: ‘Press Play’, ontworpen door het residentencollectief Bebe Books. Dit moment vormde tevens de symbolische landing van ‘Press Play’ – een nomadische printshop waarmee Bebe Books de druk­ke­rij-erva­ring wil her­de­fi­ni­ë­ren – in Leuven. ‘Press Play’ wordt de komende maanden niet enkel uw belang­rijk­ste bestem­ming voor diver­se print­op­los­sin­gen, maar wil een dyna­misch plat­form van cre­a­ti­vi­teit, inno­va­tie en queer expressie bieden. ACTIVITEITEN

Druk in Leuven

In het kader van het stadsbreed woord- en boekenfestival Druk in Leuven ontwikkelde Off the Grid een driedaags programma, gewijd aan ‘publishing’ als artistieke praktijk. Na een live uitzending van Culture Club, opent op vrijdag de presentatie ‘To Borrow‘ van artist-in-residence Oya, een patchwork van geleende ideeën. Collectief-in-residence Bebe Books lanceert gelijktijdig hun queer printing platform ‘Press Play‘. Zaterdag en zondag staan in het teken van ‘Back-to-Back‘, een programma met talks, per­for­man­ces en rea­dings georganiseerd door curator-in-residence Alicja Melzacka (zie onder). Tot slot nodigt 30CC Rinus Van de Velde uit om op zaterdag zijn favoriete lectuur te presenteren in ‘de Boekenkamer‘ en organiseert Let’s Talk Leuven een artist talk met Bebe Books.

De wereld van uitgeven en boekbinden zit vol lichamelijke metaforen ontleend aan choreografie, zoals dos à dos (‘rug-aan-rug’) of tête-bêche (‘hoofd-aan-teen’). Deze dubbele betekenis, die onze festivalnaam ook heeft, vormde voor curator Alicja Melzacka de vonk om de relatie tussen tekst en lichaam te verkennen. Gespreid over twee namiddagen (13:00-18:00) opent dit programma een waaier aan bijdragen van Henry Andersen, Clara Amaral, Daniel Blanga Gubbay, Francesca Hawker, Will Holder, Martha Jager, Jeroen Peeters, Isabelle Sully, Reinier Vrancken.

Save the Date: Atelier in Beeld

Op zon­dag 5 mei, tij­dens Atelier in Beeld, ope­nen een aan­tal resi­den­ten (vast en tij­de­lijk) de deu­ren van hun ate­lier. We starten in de voormiddag met een feestelijke brunch en knippen het lintje van onze nieuwste locatie: Studio Minckelers. Om 15:00 in de namiddag is er een talk door Maxime Moinet (Art au Centre).

RESIDENTEN

In maart verwelkomden we Polien Boons als nieuwe permanente resident in Studio Vaartstraat. In de volgende nieuwsbrief meer daarover!

In de M-Residentie startte Angyvir Padilla, in het kader van een samenwerking met Moussem. Tijdens haar verblijf in Leuven wil Padilla die artis­tie­ke dia­loog met dier­ba­ren, maar ook haar band met Venezuela ver­der ver­ken­nen. Daarnaast zal ze de inte­gra­tie van stem en geluid in haar sculp­tu­ren en per­for­man­ces ver­der onderzoeken. Het resul­taat van het onder­zoek tij­dens Padilla’s resi­den­tie wordt in het najaar van 2024 gepre­sen­teerd in M.

In april heeft de 30CC-Residentie Benjamin Richter en Jordi & Arno te gast.

VACATURE

Na twee jaren plankgas, nemen wij afscheid van onze onvolprezen Cas-collega Koi Persyn, die z’n carrière in Jester verder zet. We zoeken dus een nieuwe resi­den­tie­co­ör­di­na­tor, die met evenveel passie ruim­te maakt voor kun­ste­naars om expe­ri­men­te­le en kwa­li­teits­vol­le pro­jec­ten te rea­li­se­ren bin­nen tra­jec­ten die ont­wik­ke­ling en pre­sen­ta­tie verbinden. Aangesproken? Solliciteren kan tot en met 5 mei.

OPEN CALL

Met deze OPEN OPEN CALL gaat Off the Grid op zoek naar kun­ste­naars, cura­to­ren en col­lec­tie­ven die invul­ling wil­len geven aan haar komen­de twee sei­zoe­nen (najaar 2024 & voor­jaar 2025). De voor­stel­len kun­nen aller­lei vor­men aan­ne­men: van een omvat­tend resi­den­tie- of onder­zoeks­pro­ject tot een ten­toon­stel­lin­g, fes­ti­val, hap­pe­ning, per­for­man­ce, scree­ning of talk. De gese­lec­teer­de groep kun­ste­naars, den­kers of makers kan beschik­ken over ate­lier- en tentoonstellingsruim­te, mate­ri­aal, een bud­get, bege­lei­ding en com­mu­ni­ca­tie-onder­steu­ning. De deadline om je aan te melden is 19 mei!

[EN] With sad hearts we share news of the passing of Ferdinand du Bois,
co-founder of nadine.
His dedication and support for artists made him a key figure in Brussels cultural life.
Ferdinand was a warm and calm-hearted man, with a great ability to listen.
His engagement and connecting spirit will be deeply missed.
Ferdinand passed away on March 21st, 2024.
Our love and support goes out to his friends and family.

[NL] Met veel droefheid melden we het overlijden van Ferdinand du Bois,
mede oprichter van nadine. 
Ferdinand was een bijzonder warme, lieve en toegewijde man, en een belangrijke sleutelfiguur in het Brusselse culturele leven.
We gaan zijn innemende en verbindende persoonlijkheid missen, zijn rust en
luisterend oor. 
Ferdinand is overleden op 21 maart 2024.
Onze steun gaat uit naar zijn vrienden en familie. 

[FR] C’est avec tristesse que nous partageons le départ de Ferdinand du Bois, le co-fondateur de nadine. 
Son engagement et son soutien aux artistes ont fait de lui une figure clé de la vie culturelle Bruxelloise. 
Ferdinand était un homme calme et chaleureux, avec une grande capacité d’écoute.  
Son dévouement et son esprit de connexion nous manquerons profondément.  
Ferdinand est décédé le 21 mars 2024. 
Tout notre amour et soutien va à la famille et aux amies.

[EN] sphex center ((0)) is an exhibition by Elipeo. A project inscribing itself in the mass archive of history and ideal body imagery, a civilisation mastered by sex-shops, genetic engineering and overpopulation. 

[NL] sphex center ((0)) is een tentoonstelling van Elipeo. Een project dat zich inschrijft in het massa-archief van de geschiedenis en ideale lichaamsbeelden, in een beschaving die wordt beheerst door seksshops, genetische manipulatie en overbevolking. 

[FR] sphex center ((0)) approche pour s’introduite dans le stock sacré de l’histoire de l’image idéale du corps, à l’époque de la civilisation des sex-shops, du génie génétique et de la surpopulation. Elipeo est artiste, cervelle volante en quête de crânes à habiter.

[EN] School of Love organizes an arts laboratory on kinship, friendship and the speculating of new family alliances.Togethermess is 5 days of critical examination of the traditional nuclear family concept to develop ideas, practices, rebellions, and skills for the emergence of kin families.

[NL] School of Love organiseert een vijfdaagse workshop rond verwantschap (kinship), vriendschap en het speculeren over nieuwe familieverbanden. Tijdens Togethermess wordt het traditionele concept van het kerngezin op een kritische manier onderzocht, met de bedoeling ideeën, praktijken, rebellie en vaardigheden te ontwikkelen die kin-families in het leven roepen.

[FR] School of Love organise des ateliers artistiques autour du kinship (parenté, affinités), de l’amitié et de l’imagination de nouvelles formes d’alliances familiales.Togethermess c’est 5 jours des réflexions critiques sur le concept de famille nucléaire traditionnelle afin de développer des idées, des pratiques, des rebellions, des compétences pour faire émerger les kin families.

[EN] Spring comes with a fresh new wind: a.pass is installing a temporary space in Molenbeek’s rue de Manchester, for artists and alumni to organise gatherings and presentations throughout the coming months. By way of an inauguration, a.pass and nadine organise a drink and evening screening of three short films by independent makers living in Brussels. Free entrance. 

[NL] De lente is daar, een frisse nieuwe wind voor a.pass, die een tijdelijke plek betrekt in de Manchesterstraat in Molenbeek. Daar zullen de komende maanden residenties en presentaties van a.pass alumni georganiseerd worden. Om dit te vieren organiseren a.pass en nadine een drink, gevolgd door een avondprogramma met drie kortfilms van onafhankelijke makers uit het Brusselse. Vrije entree.

[FR] Le printemps souffle un vent de fraiches nouveautés: a.pass s’installe dans un lieu temporaire à Molenbeek (rue de Manchester) ouvert à toustes artistes et alumni qui souhaitent organiser des rencontres ou présentations les mois à venir. En guise d’évènement d’ouverture, a.pass et nadine organisent un verre lors d’une soirée de projection de trois court-métrages de cinéastes indépendantes basées à Bruxelles. Entrée gratuite.

[EN] Dannie.p is composed and printed by desespiegles on the risograph. The artists-architects duo took form along a poetic exchange of vidéolettres. Jolien Naeyaert and Anne Philippe distilled this intimate material from the Covid era and turned it into a haptic and playful book that reflects their way of working.

[NL] Dannie.p is gecureerd door Jolien Naeyaert en Anne Philippe en gedrukt met de risograaf. Het kunstenaars-architecten duo desespiegles vormde zich doorheen een reeks vidéolettres in de Covid periode. Dannie.p biedt een nieuwe blik op hun intieme uitwisseling, als boek object dat hun poëzie en speelse manier van werken reflecteert.

[FR] Dannie.p se présente comme objet-livre manifeste d’une manière de penser
« desespiegles ». Elle “traduit” le travail de la pensée par l’échange de ‘vidéolettres’ qu’Anne Philippe et Jolien Naeyaert, architectes-artistes ont engagées, particulièrement pendant la période de confinement.

In het kunstproject Edgelanders bouwen de kunstenaars Ehsan Fardjaniya en Raul Balai aan een (zelf georganiseerd) proces tegen de stad Amsterdam en eisen daarmee dat de stad zich houdt aan haar ethische en juridische verplichtingen. Ze bouwen geleidelijk toe naar een openbaar proces tegen de stad in het jubileumjaar 2025. In de jaren daarvoor zullen ze bewijs opbouwen, getuigen horen en de aanklacht opstellen. Door middel van verschillende presentatievormen vindt er uitwisseling plaats met verschillende belanghebbenden en inwoners van de stad, zoals ongedocumenteerden, burgers, politici, advocaten en organisaties die zich met deze kwestie bezighouden.

Terwijl de kunstenaars in oktober een eerste hoofdstuk presenteerden in de vorm van een installatie in het Amsterdam Museum als onderdeel van Refresh Amsterdam 2 en een performance en tentoonstelling in Podium Mozaïek als tweede hoofdstuk, zal in de Appel een derde hoofdstuk worden gepresenteerd, dat zich richt op de getuigen. De getuigen zijn de ongedocumenteerde vluchtelingen. Door middel van video’s van gesprekken met hen, zoomen Raul en Ehsan in op hun ervaringen met het leven in een gemeentelijke opvang en hun strijd om bewijs te verzamelen voor het tribunaal tegen de stad Amsterdam in 2025.

In het decor van een steeds verder aftakelende garage aan de rand van Amsterdam Zuidoost zocht een groep ongedocumenteerden hun toevlucht. Hun benarde situatie trok de aandacht van de gewaardeerde sociaal advocaat Pim Fischer, die onbevreesd hun zaak verdedigde en de gemeente Amsterdam voor de rechter daagde om hun fundamentele mensenrecht op onderdak af te dwingen. De rechter verordonneerde dat Amsterdam onderdak moest bieden met onvoorwaardelijke toegang tot Bed, Bad en Brood. In een vastberaden streven naar gerechtigheid breidde de strijd zich uit naar het nationale niveau, toen de staat zelf werd aangeklaagd voor het niet bieden van de noodzakelijke inzet.

In een baanbrekende beslissing stelde het Europese Hof de eisers in het gelijk en legde het onvoorwaardelijke toegang tot onderdak in het hele land op. Toen de faciliteiten werden gebouwd, gloorde er een sprankje hoop voor mensen in nood. De Raad van State kwam echter met een voorwaarde, de ongrijpbare vierde “B” – “Begeleiding”. Deze hield in dat het gebruik van de opvangfaciliteiten afhankelijk was van de deelname van ongedocumenteerden aan een oriëntatieprogramma voor repatriëring, dat binnen een jaar moest zijn afgerond.

Deze voorwaarde legde de complexiteit van de situatie bloot, waarbij het nastreven van fundamentele mensenrechten verstrikt raakte in bureaucratische mandaten. De dichotomie tussen het bieden van onderdak en de vraag naar oriëntatie op repatriëring vormde een moreel en ethisch dilemma. De wisselwerking tussen wettelijke verplichtingen en menselijk mededogen raakte verstrikt in een web van onzekerheid.

De tentoonstelling wordt geactiveerd door live activiteiten. Rondleidingen door de kunstenaars en activiteiten door deelnemers aan het project zullen plaatsvinden tijdens de duur van de tentoonstelling. fluent is pleased to present interview, a solo exhibition by Victor Ruiz Colomer. 

interview presents a new group of sculptures that affect the material structure and the somatic perception of the space. Triggering a centrifugal force, this series of perimetral works propose space as a cognitive slippage from where openings and access points, containment, desire and movement are reassembled into a more plastic reality.    

In recent years, Ruiz Colomer’s work has been preoccupied with spatial making, proposing systems and structures that experiment with their perceptual relations. In doing so, the materiality in the circulation of value, the invention of notative and scripting forms within pedagogical and self-managed dynamics, and energy consumption become recurrent aspects of his practice. Through them, he activates the potential of certain non-normative movements to affect different forms of oppression.

For this presentation, such structural or systemic approach is articulated from an interest in the genealogy of spaces where knowledge is produced and legitimated. From glasshouses as places of decontextualization and conservation, to shopping malls as triggers of desire, as well as world expositions acting as hinges across these environments, interview introduces forms of plastic opacity where the distribution and consumption of knowledge could drift.

Victor Ruiz Colomer lives and works in Barcelona. Recent work presentations include: asula  (as part of Hacer Historias V with c h o r o), loh te linvel at etHall with Ana Martínez Fernández and Basel Social Club with Cordova. He has participated in recent exhibitions at Albarrán Bourdais (Madrid, 2022), Dilalica (Barcelona, 2021), Centro Centro (Madrid, 2020), CAPC (Bordeaux, 2020) and Cordova (Barcelona, 2019).
In collaboration with Joe Highton he has presented projects at MANIFESTA 12 (Palermo, 2018), 6th Moscow Biennale of Young Art (Moscow, 2018), Endless Process at Muu Kaapeli (Helsinki, 2018) and The Next Mutation (Caixa Forum, Barcelona , 2021).
He has also developed experimental educational projects for Salmon (as a member of Cascades study group), SAC & La Fundació Joan Miró-(Barcelona 2019-2023) and Proteínas at fluent (Santander, 2022).

This exhibition has been co-produced in collaboration with Hangar, Barcelona as part of their 2023 production grants.
