Love Thy Network: Friendship, Gossip, and Public Discourse — Available Now!

With all the connections we’ve made at Montez Press Radio over the years, we know good friends are impossible to quantify and just as hard to define. For all the day-ones, ride-or-dies, and chosen families, we also have fair weather friends, friends with benefits, and friends who are just there for the free beer after the show. In the informal economy of the culture industry, friendship becomes a site of transaction and our world can sometimes feel like chess without a chessboard. And that’s okay. It might sound cynical to suggest that good friendships often hinge on exchange, but we know that wisdom can be traded for opportunity, a shoulder to cry on for a dinner to laugh over, a wink for something best obtained in the bathroom. So long as no one is overly preoccupied with accounting, exchange is foundational to our most valued friendships.

Whether your friend has a responsibility to come to your next show is a question as timeless as whether art has the social responsibility to do anything but be good art. In the late 20th century, when art collapsed into life and its priorities shifted away from the unique object, culture adopted the position that contemporary art is a place of discourse, a site where the exchange of ideas turns the world as it is into a world of possibilities. But today, as we confront political and social crises online and off, art can feel trapped between self-indulgent abstraction and moralizing didacticism. The goal of art and its discourses shouldn’t be to prove, or even come to agreements, but to stir new ways of thinking, to encourage us to be curious and perpetually in conversation.

As a platform established for dialogue about art (and sharing playlists with crushes), Montez Press Radio believes that the nuances of our friendships are vital to consider if we are to achieve a shared and polyvocal future (that includes good art). Our friends are our livelihoods and our support systems, our inspiration and encouragement, our muses and our competitors. So for MPR’s first Series installment—a new strand of curated radio broadcasts—we’ve invited friends, new and old, to think through the intimate and professional, the exclusive and cooperative, the transactional and parasocial, the facts and the tea, to consider what it means to belong: to a scene, to a network, to a community, to a public.

APRIL

Op 13 maart vierde Cas-co haar jubileum én de kunstenaars die samen de Cas-community vormen. Beeld: Maya Strobbe en Lieselotte Vloeberghs werden uitgenodigd om voor de gelegenheid een nieuwe reuzevlag voor het schoolplein van Brede School Stroom te ontwikkelen. Het resultaat is ‘Vlag #9: Tekening voor de lucht (#A0B4CF)’, een werk dat zowel de onvoor­spel­baar­heid van de toe­komst als de dank­baar­heid voor de lucht weerspiegelt. Foto: Jente Waerzeggers.

ACTIVITEITEN

Extra Muros

Cas-co werkt op systematische basis met STUK en M Leuven om kunstenaars in het Leuvense langetermijnsondersteuning en presentatiekansen in Leuven te bieden. Vorige week donderdag opende het toonmoment van M-resident Brahim Tall in M, het sluitstuk van een verblijf van vijf maanden aan Cas-co. Voortbouwend op zijn eerdere werk ‘The Choir of Dissonance‘ (2022) presenteert hij een geluidsinstallatie, waarin stemmen samensmelten tot een ruimtevullende, vibrerende aanwezigheid – een compositie die beweegt tussen harmonie, dissonantie en chaos. Op 28 april open geluidsfestival Hear Here. STUK selecteerde Studio Vaartstraat-kunstenaars Lucy Andrews voor de ontwikkeling van nieuw werk: ‘A Distant Roar’ is een serie biomorfe sculpturen die spelen met de sonische eigenschappen van auto-onderdelen en schelpen. 

Grafisch Lab

Met het grafisch lab wil Cas-co iedereen op een laagdrempelige manier toegang geven tot de infrastructuur en expertise die nodig is om te experimenteren, te co-creëren en te blijven leren op vlak van print en fotografie. Het programma bestaat uit een wekelijks open lab op donderdag (18-22:00), tweewekelijkse initiaties en occasionele masterclasses. Deze maand geeft Wout Maes een initiatie in risoprinten met scanner (16 april) en Lise Van den Broucke neemt je mee in de wereld van het monoprinten (30 april).

Support

Cas-co verwelkomt de Frans-Italiaanse programmator Caterina Zevola voor een lunch talk en studio visits. Om 12u duikt ze in haar multidisciplinaire praktijk, die dans, theater en performance samenbrengt. Zevola werkte eerder o.a. bij Palais de Tokyo en het Centre National de la Danse, en leidt nu de afdeling podiumkunsten van CWB in Parijs. Ze is ook oprichter en curator van het PERFORMISSIMA Festival. Kom mee luisteren en blijf gerust napraten of lunchen (BYOL – bring your own lunch)!

Off the Grid

Off the Grid is het in-house residentie- en presentatieplatform van Cas-co. Artist-in-residence Robin Faymonville voerde de laatste drie maanden onderzoek naar de kracht van stilte als protestvorm. Op 26 april om 14u00 organiseert hij een ‘silent walk’, waarbij de deelnemers worden uitgenodigd om met een blanco bord door de straten van Leuven te marcheren. Collective-in-residence Bienvenue ontwikkelde de laatste maanden een nieuwe installatie en lounge-cabaretperformance, die verschillende codes en objecten uit kantoor- en barcontext integreren. Save the date: op 8 mei bent u van harte welkom voor de opening van ‘The word silence still makes noise‘ en ‘Tonight: things don’t make sense‘, de slotpresentaties van respectievelijk Robin en Bienvenue.

Terugblik: Cas-co’s Tin Jubilee

Eén maand geleden vierde Cas-co haar tiende verjaardag, of haar tinnen jubileum. Overdag co-organiseerden we met UFO het dagprogramma ‘Prints & Puns, Where Artists Make a Mark‘ met talks, presentaties rond het topic van printmaking en kunstenaarspublicaties én studio visits binnen de Cas-community. Twee van de vele hoogtepunten: het hijsen van een nieuwe vlag door Maya Strobbe & Lieselotte Vloeberghs op het schoolplein van Brede School Stroom en de inwijding van het nieuwe grafische lab op maakleerplek. De avond werd aangevat met een ceremonie en performances door Collective-in-residence Bienvenue en vloeide over in een feest op de maat van Orczy, Brahim Tall, Georgy Chtchevaev, Moogy Maseratie & Jente Waerzeggers. Gedurende heel de dag was er nieuw en oud werk uit de Cas-community te zien: zo maakten meer dan 45 kunstenaars een gelimiteerde risoprint, aangeboden onder de noemer ‘Cas-coffer’; Jente Waerzeggers, wiens verjaardag met de onze samenviel, opende zijn presentatie ‘HAPPY BIRTHDAY’ en artist-in-residence Robin Faymonville’s lanceerde zijn residentieproject met een Silent Disco. Bedankt aan iedereen die aanwezig was, aan iedereen die een bijdrage deed, aan iedereen die Cas-co maakt tot de uitzonderlijk warme plek die het vandaag de dag is. Eentje voor de boeken!

Nieuwe M-Resident: Ellen Dhondt

Welkom aan Ellen Dhondt, die de komende vijf maanden te gast is de M-residentie in Cas-co. Gefascineerd door de vormgeving van educatieve werkbladen en hun onzichtbare dogmatische impact op beeldvorming, verkent zij in haar schilderijen genderrollen, stereotypering en de constructie van identiteit. Geïnspireerd door de uitknipbare papieren poppen uit de jaren 1920, creëerde ze een alter ego: Ellie Dolly. Dit personage wordt in verschillende situaties en omgevingen opgevoerd, waarbij Dhondt de complexe vrouwelijke identiteit, universele thema’s en taboes verkent. Het resultaat van het onderzoek tijdens Ellen’s residentie wordt in het najaar van 2025 gepresenteerd in M.

Open Call: A/M (Kunstpodium T)

Afstuderende studenten van kunstacademies in België en Nederland kunnen zich vanaf nu, en tot 1 mei (16:00), aanmelden voor het Apprentice/Master-programma van Kunstpodium T. Tijdens dit mentorschapstraject werk je samen met drie andere pas afgestudeerde kunstenaars én een gevestigde naam. Samen bouw je aan een collectieve tentoonstelling, met ruimte voor experiment en uitwisseling. Een van de presentaties landt jaarlijks in Off the Grid, het residentie- en tentoonstellingsplatform van Cas-co.

Van harte welkom op het tweedaagse openingsprogramma van het onderzoeksproject en de tentoonstelling Every Act of Struggle: Intrusion and Assembly! Het programma gaat op donderdag 24 april van start met een gesprek tussen de deelnemende kunstenaars en curatoren (Noor Abed, Simnikiwe Buhlungu, Chad Cordeiro, Iswanto Hartono, Lara Khaldi, en Pieter Paul Pothoven), een lezing van de publicatie Stars at Midday door Noor Abed, en een live-uitzending en luistersessie door Andrei Van Wyk en Dirar Kalash. De volgende dag, op vrijdag 25 april, gaat het programma verder met een onderzoeks- en studiesessie door Miriyam Aouragh, Karl Moubarak en Omar Jabary Salamanca, gevolgd door een lezing van Mitchell Esajas. Over de tentoonstelling
In de afgelopen twee jaar is er een complex discours ontstaan over de manier waarop culturele instellingen in Nederland omgaan met kwesties van historisch geweld en systematische onrechtvaardigheid in de context van hun koloniale geschiedenis. Kunstenaars gebruiken verschillende strategieën om er bij deze instellingen op aan te dringen deze kwesties aan te pakken, vaak door activisme te combineren met hun artistieke praktijk. Hoewel sommige acties deze zaken onder de publieke aandacht hebben gebracht, speelt een groot deel van het discours zich in de privésfeer af, waarbij veel instellingen een voorzichtige of vrijblijvende houding aannemen. Deze huidige dynamiek herinnert aan eerdere momenten in de geschiedenis, namelijk de debatten die ontstonden door de culturele boycot van Zuid-Afrika en de anti-apartheidsbeweging van de jaren 1960 tot 1980 in Nederland, toen culturele instellingen onder vergelijkbare druk kwamen te staan om kritisch na te denken over hun eigen rol.

Met behulp van een methodologie van School of Intrusions hebben de kunstenaars in deze tentoonstelling elkaar ontmoet in verschillende archieven en op andere locaties in Amsterdam, waar ze onderzoeksmateriaal doornamen en verschillende acties van kunstenaarsbewegingen, anti-apartheidscampagnes en de institutionele reacties die daarop volgden bespraken. Voor de presentatie in de Appel zullen relevante kunstwerken van de kunstenaars Noor Abed, Simnikiwe Buhlungu, Chad Cordeiro en Pieter Paul Pothoven worden tentoongesteld, en zal de tentoonstellingsruimte van de Appel worden omgebouwd tot een gastvrije ontmoetingsruimte, ontworpen door architect en kunstenaar Iswanto Hartono. Hier wordt het open onderzoek voortgezet en vinden studiesessies met het publiek plaats. Dit onderzoek zal doorgaan na deze tentoonstelling en uitmonden in een volgend publiek moment in 2026.

De verschillende samenkomsten en onderzoekssessies leidden tot veel open vragen zoals: Wat waren de motivaties om aan te sluiten bij de anti-apartheidsbewegingen in Nederland? Wat was apartheid in Zuid-Afrika en hoe is het vergelijkbaar met de huidige Israëlische apartheid in Palestina? Welke tactieken werden toegepast door de anti-apartheidsbewegingen in Nederland? Hoe belangrijk was de culturele boycot in die tijd en wat was de dynamiek tussen culturele instellingen en cultuurbeoefenaars? Waren beeldend kunstenaars actief in de anti-apartheidsbeweging? Hoe reageerden culturele instellingen op acties en culturele boycots? Wat is er gebeurd met de strijdvaardigheid van de jaren ‘70 en ‘80? Zijn de anti-apartheidsstrategieën die vandaag gebruikt worden toereikend? En zo niet, welke middelen en strategieën kunnen we ontwikkelen of overnemen?
 
 

Donderdag 24 april: volledig programma
16:30-17:30 uur: Onderzoeksuitwisseling en discussie door Noor Abed, Simnikiwe Buhlungu, Chad Cordeiro, Iswanto Hartono, Lara Khaldi en Pieter Paul Pothoven
De groep heeft vergaderd en onderzoek gedaan volgens de methode van de School of Intrusions, waarbij ze zich telkens concentreerden op een bepaalde vraag of tekst en daarvoor een overeenkomstige locatie kozen. Deze bijeenkomsten werden opgenomen en worden gedeeld met het publiek in de vorm van een oogst, maar tijdens de opening zullen de kunstenaars hun proces, vragen en archiefmateriaal delen met het publiek.

18:00-19:00 uur: Lezing van Stars at Midday door Noor Abed & en reacties en discussie door deelnemende kunstenaars
Stars at Midday -نجوم الضُهر is een persoonlijk productiedagboek waarin de kunstenaar en filmmaker Noor Abed visuele en poëtische notities verzamelt uit de productiefase van haar film A Night We Held Between, gefilmd in Palestina in 2023 met familie en vrienden. Net als de film waarvan het de productie beschrijft, verweeft het boek narratieve fragmenten, zang en dagboekobservaties, waardoor een fusie ontstaat van natuurlijke en gecomponeerde bewegingssequenties, van documentaire en fictieve elementen. De deelnemende kunstenaars zullen in discussie gaan met anekdotes en vragen als reactie op de delen van het boek die ze zal voorlezen.

Het script is onderdeel van een groter project dat deels wordt gepresenteerd bij de Appel. observatie contra observatie is een gesproken monoloog: een gedramatiseerd verslag van de gebeurtenissen rond de eerste aanslag die werd opgeëist door de Revolutionaire Anti-Racistische Actiegroep (RARA). Deze actie vond plaats op 17 september 1985 op een filiaal van de Makro in Duivendrecht. Deze actie en de drie andere die volgden in de periode 1985-1987, dwongen de SHV, het moederbedrijf van de Makro, zich terug te trekken uit Zuid-Afrika. Pothoven schreef het script voor een personage dat spreekt vanuit het perspectief van verschillende betrokken activisten, gebaseerd op interviews en historische documenten.

17:00-18:30 uur: Resistant Energies: Onderzoeks- en studiesessie met Miriyam Aouragh, Karl Moubarak en Omar Jabary Salamanca
Infrastruceel verzet (infraverzet) is het abolitionistische werk van het afbreken van onderdrukkende infrastructuren en tegelijkertijd het bedenken, organiseren en opbouwen van nieuwe structuren. Maar hoe ziet dit eruit? Hoe worden infra-strijden visueel gepresenteerd als onderdeel van historische erfenissen? Welk visueel lexicon en welke alledaagse esthetiek zouden affectieve en politieke relaties met infrastructuren kunnen transformeren?

In dit gesprek vertellen Miriyam, Karl en Omar over hun onderzoek in de archieven van het IISG, het Internationaal Instituut voor Sociale Geschiedenis (Amsterdam), op zoek naar visueel bewijs van creatieve strategieën, het organiseren van gemeenschappen, publicaties en concepten voor en van infraverzet. De archieven bevatten rijk materiaal, waaronder posters, flyers, stickers, foto’s, kaarten, diagrammen, bouwtekeningen, optredens, spandoeken en objecten. Gebaseerd op de overtuiging dat visuele praktijken energie kunnen geven aan het opbouwen van alledaagse infrastructuren voor communicatie, zorg, leren en het delen van bronnen, heeft hun onderzoek zich gericht op zowel het herstel van beelden die helpen bij het situeren, politiek aanscherpen, historiseren en creëren van fantasierijke strategieën voor verzet tegen digitale uitputting, als op het geweld dat wordt gepleegd door computationele infrastructuren die samenwerken met bedrijfs- en staatsactoren aan genocidale technologieën en toeleveringsketens. Ze zullen archiefmateriaal en beelden delen die specifiek betrekking hebben op de anti-apartheidsstrijd in Zuid-Afrika.

Het Resistant Energies onderzoekstraject werd geïnitieerd door The Institute for Technology in the Public Interest, een bijeenkomst van activisten, kunstenaars, ingenieurs en theoretici die zich inzetten om samen te articuleren, activeren en opnieuw te verbeelden wat computationele technologieën in het ‘publieke belang’ zouden kunnen zijn wanneer ‘publiek belang’ altijd in de maak is.

Mitchell Esajas zal spreken over het transnationale samenwerkingsproject van The Black Archives, CAPExNL, een tijdelijke interventie in het Camissa Museum. Nancy Jouwe en Elise Fernandez onderzoeken namens het Camissa Museum de erfenis van de Nederlandse slavernij in de Kaap. De interventie presenteert uniek archiefmateriaal, historische verhalen en kunstwerken van Adrian van Wyk & Charles Palm, Bradley van Sitters, Farren van Wyk, Carine Zaayman en Neo Muyanga.

Şeref Romain Kavak est un ancien chercheur en sciences politiques à l'ULB et à l'EHESS et enseignant à Sciences Po Paris. Il a fait des recherches sur des groupes de musique multilingues des diasporas en Europe et leur participation à la transformation des conflits ethno-nationaux. Actuellement, Il écrit des chansons et chante avec le groupe «Nostanbul ».

Sleeping in

After the first and immediately unforgettable sleepover ever in Q-O2 last Saturday night, we decide to turn over once more, snooze again, and start our yearly Oscillation festival fully rested, when it lands in Brussels in just under a month. In the meantime, we get up one more time to host sleepover instigator Nele Möller for a Second Sundays listening session upcoming Sunday, where – in line with the festival’s theme – we already reflect on field recordings. Already lined up after the festival are two workshops on technological crafting, led by Claire Williams and Maryia Kamarova.

A listening session into ‘the field’: our current resident Nele Möller will bring recordings from her own practice and that of others that raise the question: what actually is a field recording?
Second Sundays is a monthly series initiated by Q-O2. Each session a new guest is invited to share an insight into their own listening, playing and speaking about a selection of sound and music that is important to their thinking or practice. The sessions try to put value on listening to recorded music in a social setting as a space for discussion. Each session is paired with a cocktail-of-the-month, as decided by the invited guest.

4 days (1-4 May) of concerts, (in-situ) performances, a conference, round table conversations, walks, a series of workshops, a field trip and an uninterrupted radio stream. Electro Textile with Claire Williams
In the Textile Electro workshop, we deconstruct technology to better understand the systems around us and to reclaim electronics through textile and craft techniques. Embroidering speakers, making embroidery produce sound, crocheting resistors, or creating noise with knitting are just a few examples. We explore the boundaries and possibilities between art, craft, and technology. This project is part of a broader reflection on the reappropriation of technology, connecting textile practices with the DIY movement and Free Culture. This workshop is part of a series of workshops organised in the framework of tekhne, supported by the European Union, and in collaboration with VK/GC De Vaartkapoen.

Biographies d’objets with Maryia Kamarova
By exploring our relationship to objects, surprising connections emerge. In this workshop, the artist Maryia Kamarova invites participants to engage with everyday objects through touch, movement, and sound recordings. Beginning with the things that surround us, we will “listen” to them by feeling their textures, and uncovering layers of their histories. We will experiment with different ways to share their stories in relation to our memories — using voice recordings and the playful language of performance. This workshop is an invitation to communicate beyond words, using objects as bridges between people and play as a form of a dialogue. Everyone is invited, no prior experience with performance or recording is needed. The workshop was developed in collaboration with PYL collective. This workshop is part of a series of workshops organised in the framework of tekhne, supported by the European Union, and in collaboration with VK/GC De Vaartkapoen.

April Interjection: Chemotaxis on a Zebra Crossing  – Elida Silvey

April’s interjection features the short-story Chemotaxis on a Zebra Crossing by Elida Silvey. As the protagonist’s fictional senses are enhanced so are their real anxieties. 

Elida Silvey is a self-taught Mexican-American writer, editor and artist living in London. Her work is concerned with post-internet visual theory as it relates to the concepts of reality, time and ‘the self,’ experienced through (collective) memory. She regularly writes in experimental forms about this topic on her Substack, Through the Eye of a Needle. She is the assistant editor for Montez Press and runs her own writing/visual arts club called Exteriors.

From the WR archive: bot4bot – Emil Woudenberg

Emil Woudenberg is an artist and designer from Toronto, currently living in London. Their transdisciplinary practice focuses on do-it-yourself, de-platformed, open-source, low-tech, sustainable, and archival publishing. Since 2016, they have worked under Strike Design Studio, designing brands, websites, and printed materials. Their work has been exhibited at institutions such as Temple Contemporary, Sam Fox School, The Bentway, and MOCA Toronto. They have completed residencies with SuperHi, Trinity Square Video, Digital Justice League, MOCA, and Whippersnapper Gallery. Through practice-led research, they explore not-so-new alternative online spaces, their technicality/materiality, and the communities that occupy them. 

The year is 2025 and the Internet is dead now. Bots dominate cyberspace, and the web has transformed into a lifeless network of automated clickers. Bots write by and for the bots, mimicking organic intelligence, feeding an endless loop of timeline data mining, algorithmic targeted ads and toxic tweet waste. In this synthetic landscape, the border between bots and humans are blurred. Together with the bots, we break the Internet forming underground networks free from algorithms, on foot we forge subversive desire paths and rewrite the collective code. – Emil Woudenberg

Hou onze website en socials in de gaten voor speciale workshops en events op deze vrijdagavonden. De presentatie en interactieve workshop over ebru, de traditionele Turkse kunst van papiermarmeren en schilderen op water van vrijdag 4 april is al volgeboekt. Deze workshop is een initiatief van Refugee Project Maastricht.
 

Nu te zien: Vultures & Fireflies

Op 13 maart opende het eerste deel van de tentoonstelling Vultures & Fireflies van de Mexicaanse kunstenaar Alejandro Galván.

Tot juli 2025 zal hij bij Marres werken aan een kroniek over Mexico. Zijn storytelling biedt bezoekers een hypergedetailleerde weergave van zijn stad Nezahualcóyotl, een voorstad van Mexico City. Beelden van geïmproviseerde architectuur, zoenende koppeltjes, bendegeweld, brandende auto’s, soapsterren, mariachi-bands en drag queens worden aanschouwd door gigantische pre-Columbiaanse mythologische figuren. Deze figuren lijken de balans van grove onrechtvaardigheid en wijdverbreide corruptie te herstellen in wat Galván omschrijft als een levendige droom van de Mexicaanse samenleving. 

Vultures & Fireflies biedt een unieke kans om het work-in-progress te volgen in april, mei en juni. De kroniek van Mexico zal steeds meer vorm krijgen met elk nieuw toegevoegd werk en ingerichte kamer. Deel 2: Vuurvliegjes zal in juni 2025 helemaal af zijn, dat wordt gevierd met een tweede opening op 28 juni 2025. De tentoonstelling is te zien t/m 31 augustus 2025. 
 

Bij de receptie van Marres is een strippenkaart verkrijgbaar, waarmee je de tentoonstelling drie keer kunt bezoeken, voor de prijs van twee. Zo kun je Galváns monumentale werk van dichtbij volgen.

Museumkaarthouders, Vrienden van Marres en kinderen onder de 18 hebben altijd gratis toegang.

Verhalenavond
Marres  x  Limestone Books

Marres viert haar 25-jarig jubileum met een reeks speciale evenementen, die elke 25e van de maand plaatsvinden. Op 25 maart organiseerden Marres en Limestone Books een verhalenavond rond de tentoonstelling Vultures & Fireflies van Alejandro Galván.

Galváns werk verzet zich tegen de onzichtbaarheid van zijn gemeenschap en laat zien dat hun verhaal verteld moet worden. Met dit in gedachten, werd er geluisterd naar de verhalen van Iris de Leeuw, Jeff van Reen, Max Yust, Chang Chih Chung, Halar Soomro en Adeola Elinice Adeyemi, rond een intiem kampvuur in de stadstuin van Marres.

Vier met ons het volgende evenement in het kader van ons 25-jarig bestaan. Op 25 april nodigen we graag onze buren uit voor een gezellige avond bij Marres. Met rondleidingen door ons team, activiteiten voor de kleintjes en een fris Marres biertje in onze stadstuin. Ook als je niet in de buurt woont, ben je van harte welkom om te proosten op onze verjaardag.

Marres Educatie

In de speciaal voor Vultures & Fireflies ingerichte eductieruimte, werken leerlingen en studenten aan een bijzondere opdracht: het verbeelden van hun eigen identiteit en achtergrond in een muurschildering.

Geïnspireerd door de kunstenaar Alejandro Galván, die zijn woonplaats Nezahualcóyotl vastlegt in zijn kunst, hebben de leerlingen nagedacht over wat ‘thuis’ voor hen betekent.

Iedere schoolgroep die tijdens Vultures & Fireflies naar Marres komt, werkt mee aan deze ruimte. Zo groeien deze muren met elke nieuwe groep uit tot een dynamisch kunstwerk vol persoonlijke perspectieven. Het resultaat is een verzameling persoonlijke en betekenisvolle kunstwerken die samen een mozaïek vormen van diverse achtergronden en verhalen.

We kregen o.a. bezoek van Kindcentrum Dynamiek, Broeklandcollege, Maastricht Institute of Arts, @ease, Porta Mosana, de Nieuwste Pabo en het Udens College.

[EN] In a world where every click, every interaction, and every moment of our daily lives generates an incessant flow of data, the exhibition Garbage Datas explores the digital overload that shapes our existence. Four artists delve into this invisible saturation, where the useful coexists with the superfluous, and the valuable drowns in the useless. 

[NL]  In een wereld waarin elke klik, elke interactie en elk moment van onze dagelijkse routine een onophoudelijke stroom aan gegevens genereert, onderzoekt de tentoonstelling Garbage Datas de digitale overvloed die ons leven vormgeeft. Vier kunstenaars duiken in deze onzichtbare verzadiging, waar het nuttige naast het overbodige bestaat en waar het waardevolle verdrinkt in het nutteloze.

[FR] Dans un monde où chaque clic, chaque interaction et chaque instant de notre quotidien génère des flux incessants de données, l’exposition Garbage Datas interroge la surabondance numérique qui façonne nos vies. Quatre artistes explorent cette saturation invisible, où l’utile côtoie le superflu, où le précieux se noie dans l’inutile.

[EN] In the freshly published book Invisible Chaos, Lina Kusaite brings together her work and projects for the first time. The book is arranged chronologically (2005 – 2024), with individual and collective work alternating in one cycle of reciprocity. The book includes photographs from Lina’s workshops, various illustrations, editorials and from her archive.

[NL] In het pas verschenen boek Invisible Chaos brengt Lina Kusaite voor het eerst haar werk en projecten samen. Het boek is chronologisch geordend (2005 – 2024), waarbij individueel en collectief werk elkaar afwisselen in één circulaire beweging. Het boek bevat foto’s van Lina’s workshops, verschillende illustraties, editorials en uit haar archief

[FR] Dans le livre récemment édité Invisible Chaos, Lina Kusaite recueille ses œuvres et ses projets depuis le début de sa carrière. Le catalogue est organisé de manière chronologique (2005-2024) et alterne des pièces individuelles à des travaux collectifs, dans un cycle de réciprocité. Le livre collecte des photos prises lors des ateliers, des illustrations, des textes, ainsi que des éléments d’archive.

Joy Boy, a tribute to Julius Eastman

Julius Eastman (1940–1990) was an African American minimalist composer, pianist, vocalist, and performer whose ‘organic music’ offered social and political commentary. JOY BOY is a three-room audiovisual installation paying tribute to Julius Eastman’s life and music, bringing together visual and sound interpretations by members of Collectif Faire-Part (Rob Jacobs, Paul Shemisi en Anne Reijniers), Victoire Karera Kampire, Fallon Mayanja, Benjamin Mengistu Navet and Mawena Yehouessi.

Prologue

Prologue is the first part of A Choreographic Exhibition—which on 3-4 May will occupy NW’s building with live performances and video works created between 2018 and 2025. In her interdisciplinary choreographic practice, Sickle draws on visual art, music, and contemporary culture at large to explore everyday life under the conditions of late capitalism. In Prologue, the artist focuses on the central role of photography in her choreographic practice.

For one weekend only, on 3 and 4 May, Ula Sickle takes over NW with A Choreographic Exhibition, an exhibition merging performance, visual art and music. Sickle's work explores how ideology inscribes itself into bodies through movement, rhythm and voice. This live exhibition brings a selection of works from 2018-2025 in a continuous play of simultaneous performances throughout NW's spaces. Not to be missed!

Clara Brörmann (°1982, Duisburg, DE) lives and works in Berlin (DE). Clara Brörmann’s work offers the viewer the chance to follow the process of creation of the paintings. She plays with the viewer’s natural thirst for knowledge and provides intellectual and practical insight into the visual creation. During a longer process of construction and deconstruction, a layered painting emerges: she constructs and deletes, covers or removes paint. She sketches and rejects until she has created a unity of colour, shape and material. Vivid lines, shifted areas of colour and traces of the working process guide the eye through the artworks. Paint offers several possibilities and is used accordingly: as impasto oil paint, as a structuring mass, as a thin glaze and as volatile pigment. The result are paintings with abstract, often geometric compositions that exude a multidimensional materiality and strong physical presence.
Clara Brörmann had solo exhibitions at RL16 (Berlin), Tick Tack (Antwerp), Schiavo Zoppelli Gallery (Milan) and Nicelle Beauchene Gallery (New York), among others. She participated in group exhibitions at Triangle (Knokke), migrant bird space (Berlin) and contemporary fine arts (Berlin), among others.

Das IKOB lädt herzlich ein zur Vernissage und Preisverleihung des IKOB – Feministischen Kunstpreises 2025, mit Werken der elf nominierten Künstler:innen:

Catherina Cramer, Cordula Ditz, Magdalena Frauenberg, Bethan Hughes, Myrthe van der Mark, Bernice Nauta & G.C. Heemskerk, Herlinde Raeman, Lynne Gbodjrou Kouassi & Nora Heidorn, Sophie Schmidt, Sandra Singh, und Huize You.

* Wir organisieren anlässlich der Vernissage einen Busshuttle zwischen Düsseldorf und dem IKOB, den Besucher:innen kostenlos nutzen können. Mehr Infos und Anmeldung hier.

Vernissage de notre nouvelle exposition

Réminiscences est une invitation au voyage à travers le temps. L’exposition se compose d’artefacts, des objets façonnés par l’être humain, qui semblent provenir de recherches non datées. Atemporels, ces fragments sont issus d’histoires croisées ou inventées. Récupérés ou réassemblés, ils créent un parcours nous transportant d’une époque à une autre.  Une multitude de récits sont à décrypter, dissimulés sous les strates accumulées. Rendez-vous dès 18h le jeudi 17.04 pour le vernissage !

Maria Elena Minuto, historienne de l’art et chercheuse en poésie concrète et visuelle, propose un cycle de cours consacré à la poésie expérimentale des années 1960-1970. Ce cycle s’attache à analyser des œuvres innovantes d’artistes en mettant l’accent sur l’Europe occidentale et les échanges culturels entre l’Italie et la Belgique.

Stage de printemps pour les 6-12 ans

Que racontent les objets que l’on garde précieusement ? À partir d’une collection d’objets trouvés, imaginés ou apportés – une clé, un jouet cassé, un morceau de tissu ou même une plume d’oiseau – les enfants exploreront durant ce stage de 3 jours la notion de collection. Grâce à des techniques d’impression comme la linogravure et le monotype, ils transformeront ces trésors du quotidien.

Avez-vous déjà ressenti l’envie de tout plaquer, d’arrêter, de disparaître ? Ainsi débute la nouvelle mini-série de quatre podcasts de l’Institut, J’arrête, écrite et lue par Adrien Grimmeau. Elle prend comme point de départ une série de disparitions d’artistes dans les années 1990, qui ont fait le choix de quitter le champ de l’art : Laurie Parsons, Cady Noland, Tehching Hsieh… En parallèle, d’autres artistes décident de ne pas créer, ou de créer des œuvres vides, à l’image du courant d’air de Ryan Gander pour la documenta de 2012, des lettres de non-motivation de Julien Prévieux, des actes de fuite de Maurizio Cattelan…

Der NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein freut sich Sie am 15. April 2025 um 19.30 Uhr zum Talk in der Ausstellung TWODO Collection: 2000-2024 in Kooperation mit dem Netzwerk VERY CONTEMPORARY einladen zu dürfen.

Im Gespräch werden Protagonisten der Sammlergruppe TWODO zu Wort kommen und auf die reiche Geschichte des Förder- und Ausstellungsprojektes zurückschauen. Ebenfalls haben wir euregionale Sammler und Ausstellungsmacher eingeladen, gemeinsam Konzepte des Sammels zu diskutieren und gegebenenfalls länderspezifische Unterschiede herauszuarbeiten. Wir freuen uns auf eine spannende Diskussion im NAK.

Den Abend abrunden werden Drinks und Gespräche im Foyer des Kunstvereins.

Zur Ausstellung:

Das dem NAK nahestehende TWODO Projekt wird nach 24 Jahren abgeschlossen und der Kunstverein blickt zurück auf die herausragenden Projekte und Ausstellungen von Mel Chin/GALA Committee, Fareed Armaly, Daniel Roth, Johannes Wohnseifer, Anne-Mie van Kerckhoven, Michael Stevenson, Simon Dybbroe Moller, Jonathan Monk, Nina Canell, Jan Timme, Klaus Merkel, Craig Mulholland, Lone Haugaard Madsen, Manuel Graf, Michael E. Smith, Kathrin Sonntag, Hiroki Tsukuda, Nora Turato, Markus Saile, Kate Davis und Arthur Löwen.

Die Förder- und Sammlergruppe des NAK wurde 1999 gegründet und stellt international ein bislang noch immer einzigartiges Modell privaten Kunstengagements dar, das sowohl in sammlerischer wie auch mäzenatischer Hinsicht neue Wege beschreitet. Die TWODO Collection verlieh nicht nur ungewöhnlichen künstlerischen Projekten eine Plattform, sondern sie sicherte seit Bestehen jährlich einen Teil des Produktionsbudgets des Kunstvereins, unterstützte damit den Kunstverein in substantieller Form finanziell.

Der NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein ist dieses Jahr abermals mit einem Stand auf der ART DÜSSELDORF vertreten. Besuchen Sie uns gerne in Halle 1 an Stand A14.

Neben den aktuellen Jahresgaben stellen wir exklusiv die neue Edition des Künstlers Dean Sameshima für den Kunstverein vor. Am 17. Mai 2025 eröffnet mit Fragments die erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung Sameshimas in Deutschland.
