Juan Pablo Plazas, ‘Even if you’, book launch: Thursday July 15, 2021 – 18:30

The book presentation by first-year candidate laureate Juan Pablo Plazas will take place in the form of a performance, a recount of different moments that surrounded the making of the book. Late reflections on the process of creating a document that feels like a printed exhibition. A skit divided in 4 mini chapters. The setting takes place in a fictional art book fair where the artist meets the publisher, and explains the absurd ways to make a book among other things.

Pavel Balta in Ter Hilst

Tijdens de zomermaanden ondergaat de brug van de Brigandstraat in Hasselt een metamorfose. De 27-jarige kunstenaar Pavel Balta werkt er aan een kleurrijke muurschildering, geïnspireerd op verhalen van bewoners van de woonwijk Ter Hilst. Midden september zal het werk volledig te bewonderen zijn.

‘Rope’ is a disproportionately enlarged blue rope, that due to its size has lost its meaning and function. Being placed in public space, passer-by are invited to imagine new functions for Rope, to interact with others or to take rest on its soft braided surface. ‘Rope’ travels the world in search for meeting new people and its ever shifting identity.

THE PLAY is a game in three acts using a gigantic toy: a circular sail of 20 meters in diameter with a golden side, a recycled plastic side and an opening in the centre. “The Play” settles in neighborhoods and communities with the aim of creating a play that is performed at sunset one week. A play in three acts: a transition from an existing situation to a better situation.

The Play is a production of Z33, Nieuwstedelijk and Atelier Ief Spincemaille

You are cordially invited to come and see ‘Open Air’ by Sander Breure & Witte van Hulzen. They show an impressive sculptural installation based on The Tomb of the Diver (ca. 470 B.C.) in Paestum, Italy. That tomb contains a number of frescos revolving around a symposium scene – people reclining on tables, with wine and musical instruments – and appearing on the tomb’s cover is a depiction of a figure diving into water. The diver of Breure and Van Hulzen is heading towards the open air. The artists connected the space of the gallery to that of the street by way of a simple gesture, a gesture with major consequences. The existing boundary between ‘private’ and ‘public’ suddenly drops away, and this puts pressure on the very notion as to what a gallery is. The notorious high threshold has vanished, just as the gallerists have. The gallery turns out to be a dramaturgical construction which is being analyzed by the artists on the basis of the notions ‘presence’ and ‘absence’. As such Open Air follows a tradition of exhibitions which, by way of their physical intervention in the space, raise philosophical questions about art’s relationship to the world. As Charles Causly wrote in his poem Eden Rock:
‘They beckon to me from the other bank. 
I hear them call, ‘See where the stream-path is! 
Crossing is not as hard as you might think.’

OUTDOOR CINEMA

FILM – Every Friday and Saturday, from sunset onwards, we show open-air films at Houtkaai. On Friday, you choose which film will be played from a selection that we made together with the local library, Utopia. On Saturday, the focus is on the MAKERS of the cinema. They show their favourite open-air films. The MAKERS is a collaboration with deAuteurs.

CITOYENNE REPRISE

EXHIBITION – Citoyenne Reprise approaches contemporary events with one eye on history and the other on “Fridays For Future.” Stories of politics and civics, artists and activists are being captured and challenge us to find our place in the landscape of our close struggles and broader forces. Forests and streams, occupations and strikes, “fake news” and true secrets: what is the landscape of civic action today.

ARTISTS OF GARDENS OF NETWERK

SUMMER – Lore Bauwens, Claire Stragier, Maxime Vancoillie, Maaike Van den Abbeele are the four artists selected from the open call for Gardens of Netwerk. They will occupy our garden this summer and will work with questions about meeting, creation and growth. This as a metaphor for activation and social engagement. You can see them at work during their residency.

ZOMER – Kunstoevers is back again from 26 June to 19 September! This edition, you will be able to enjoy an open-air exhibition spread throughout the city and boroughs. Everywhere you go, you will come across Kunstoevers and discover the work of local artists. In addition, you can take a break at one of the ‘Tables of Multiplication’. These artistic picnic tables multiply at lightning speed and spread throughout the city.

SUMMER BROEIKLAS

SUMMER – Another Summer Broeiklas in Netwerk Aalst. During the school year, Broeiklas organises study counselling for non-native primary school children who grow up in socially vulnerable families. The corona crisis further exacerbated inequality. That is why Broeiklas launches summer school classes, a holiday activity for children who already went to Broeiklas during the school year. Broeiklas knows its children and can effectively catch up on the learning and/or language deficits. 

On 7 July and 28 July Broeiklas organises fun activities in Netwerk Aalst!

Via een videoreeks werkt Adam Leech een handleiding uit waarmee bezoekers hun ervaring in S.M.A.K. grappiger, rijker en onconventioneler kunnen maken. Een museumbezoek zal na het bekijken van deze tutorials nooit meer hetzelfde zijn!

In zijn nieuwste en laatste video ‘The Gap’ stelt Adam Leech vast dat subjectieve ervaringen slechts deels kunnen worden verklaard door een fysische meting van de werkelijkheid. Zijn intuïties worden bevestigd door de ‘Explanatory Gap’ theorie van filosoof Joseph Levine.

ROOMS Festival op 4 en 5 september

In het weekend van 4 en 5 september lanceert Marres het performance festival ROOMS. ROOMS is onderdeel van MAAS! en presenteert nieuw werk van jonge makers en gevestigde talenten. In de huiselijke kamers van Marres wisselen uitdagend theater, dromerige films, intieme dansstukken en bijzondere beeldende kunst elkaar af. Achter de kamerdeuren nemen een tiental makers je twee dagen lang mee op een expeditie naar onontgonnen werelden.

Kunstverhalen in de tuin van Marres

Ontsnap aan de drukte van de stad en luister in de stadstuin van Marres naar kunstverhalen van De Onzichtbare Collectie. Stap vanaf de Capucijnenstraat de poort van Marres binnen. Via het terras van Marres Kitchen bereik je via de stenen trapjes de verborgen tuin. Neem plaats op een houten bankje, scan met je telefoon de QR-code en luister naar verhalen over kunstwerken van over de hele wereld.

Picknick to go in een Keetje Mans-tas

Deze zomer kun je bij Marres niet alleen picknicken in de prachtige stadstuin, je kunt er ook voor kiezen de hapjes en drankjes mee te nemen. Deze picknick to go zit in een toffe tote bag met een print van het kunstwerk A Oui van Keetje Mans (ter waarde van €10). Picknick is beschikbaar tot 15 augustus.

Stéphanie Saadé in De Onzichtbare Collectie

Dit landschapsschilderij, nu te zien in de tentoonstelling Intimate Geographies, hing oorspronkelijk in de eetkamer van de grootouders van kunstenaar Stéphanie Saadé in Beiroet. Gedurende de Libanese burgeroorlog raakte het beschadigd door granaatscherven. In een audioverhaal voor De Onzichtbare Collectie vertelt Saadé over de reis die het kunstwerk sindsdien aflegde. Je kunt Intimate Geographies nog tot en met 15 augustus bezoeken.

Amélie Sounalet analyse dans son travail nos relations et interactions complexes avec les objets. La plupart des outils ont été conçus de sorte à prolonger notre main ou à augmenter notre force, et donc à nous faciliter les tâches du quotidien. Les agencements architecturaux sont pensés de manière à guider les corps et à optimiser les flux. Nous sommes connecté·es et disponibles à toute heure grâce à nos téléphones. Tout ce qui nous entoure agit, de manière plus ou moins consciente, sur notre corps, notre posture, nos interactions avec autrui. Hors, ces extensions technologiques de nos corps, selon les termes de Marshall McLuhan, entraînent inévitablement des amputations à d’autres endroits : là où nous gagnons en efficacité, nous courons le risque de perdre en liberté de penser et d’agir. Amélie Sounalet porte un regard attentif sur ces éléments de notre quotidien qui peuvent autant être nos complices que des vecteurs d’une aliénation profonde. En les détournant avec humour de leur usage premier, elle révèle les absurdités d’un modèle de société capitaliste et consumériste, portée entièrement sur la performativité de soi et les apparences illusoires.

Hatice Pinarbasi est peintre. Pourtant, son travail s’émancipe des seules surfaces peintes, pour se déployer dans l’espace, pour former des mots, se muer en personnages. Préférant le jeu à la maîtrise, elle combine pratique picturale et goût pour la lecture et les langues (elle en maîtrise 5), le tout infusé d’humour non verbal, dans des environnements scéniques et narratifs.

Amélie Sounalet analyzes in her work our complex relationships and interactions with objects. Tools are usually designed to extend our hand or to increase our strength, and thus make our daily tasks easier. Architectural layouts are designed to guide bodies and optimize flows. We are connected and always available thanks to our phones. Everything around us acts, in a more or less conscious way, on our body, our posture, our interactions with others. However, these technological extensions of our bodies, in the words of Marshall McLuhan, inevitably lead to amputations in other places: where we become more efficient, we run the risk of losing our freedom to think and act. Amélie Sounalet takes a close look at these elements of our daily life which can be as much our accomplices as vectors of deep alienation. By humorously twisting their original use, she reveals the absurdities of a capitalist and consumerist model of society, focused on self-performativity and illusory appearances.

Hatice Pinarbasi is a painter. However, her work frees itself from painted surfaces alone to unfold in space, form words, and transform into figures. Preferring play to mastery, she combines her pictorial practice with a taste for reading and languages (she speaks five of them) as well as non-verbal humour, in scenic and narrative environments.

*Een “formation camp” is een anarchistische traditie waarbij verschillende groepen elke zomer samenkomen om ideologische blauwdrukken te tekenen voor werelden die al mogelijk zijn. Als een weergave in ruimte en tijd van ons eigen werk tijdens het Curatorial Programme 2020-2021 van de Appel, combineert dit publieksprogramma tal van projecten die er allemaal naar streven om te maken en te denken met de gemeenschap.

Met trots presenteert de Appel de eindresultaten van het Curatorial Programme (CP) 2020/2021, waarvan de deelnemers in Amsterdam aankwamen in een uitzonderlijke tijd van sociale verandering. Op basis van hun eigen beleving van de geschiedenis, het heden en de toekomst zijn alle deelnemers nieuwe samenwerkingsverbanden aangegaan. Deze beginnen nu vorm te krijgen in de Aula van de Appel en de daaraan verbonden locaties als de vijf sessies van Formation Camp: 

ALI R U OK? is een lopend onderzoek, opgezet door Edwin Nasr, dat kunstenaars, wetenschappers en cultuurwerkers binnen en buiten Nederland samenbrengt die zich inzetten voor het ontmantelen van de detentiestaat. Daarmee richt het zich op de toekomst van 22 oktober 2007, de dag waarop Bilal B., een tweeëntwintigjarig Nederlands-Marokkaanse inwoner van Amsterdam Nieuw-West, op brute wijze werd vermoord door lokale politieagenten. Vlakbij, in de Appel, worden de deelnemers uitgenodigd om vluchtroutes te tekenen en een poëtica van ontmanteling te articuleren. 

8 juli van 16:00 tot 19:30: Ruimtelijke interventie door Farah Fayyad en Ayman Hassan (Disarming Design van het Sandberg Instituut); 9 juli van 16:30 tot 18:00: Rondetafelgesprek met Julienne Weegels, Barak Kalir, en Thijs Jeursen. 11 juli van 18:00 tot 19:30: Lezing van Nicole R. Geïnitieerd door Hera Chan, een Kamer naar het hart is een eerbetoon aan bouwers en strijders. De onafhankelijkheid van Suriname in 1975 – toevallig hetzelfde jaar dat de Appel als stichting werd ingeschreven – luidde een nieuw tijdperk in van coalitievorming, waarbij emancipatiebewegingen zichtbaar werden die al honderden jaren in Nederland en de door Europa bezette en gekoloniseerde gebieden in ontwikkeling waren. Nu heeft de eerste politieke partij in Europa die werd opgericht door een zwarte vrouw een zetel in de Tweede Kamer. Verzet neemt monumentale vormen aan met nieuwe werken van Farida Sedoc en Lidwien van de Ven, die een scenografie vormen voor een schaduwkabinet; een oproep aan de vertegenwoordigers onder ons.

Ideologische memers – die memen voor een sociaal/politiek doel, niet alleen voor de LOLZ – krijgen dagelijks te maken met het ongemak van de gevestigde instituten die ze bekritiseren. Ze zijn star, ondoorzichtig, afkerig/bang/wars van verandering, meestal door een gebrek aan publieke verantwoording. Wat zijn de mislukkingen, fouten of frustraties, mazen in de wet, overwinningen, en ontberingen van het werk in deze bevochten frontlinie? Geïnitieerd door Àngels Miralda in samenwerking met Clara Balaguer en Santiago Pinyol, SoMeMeR uNSCHooL / SMMR NSCHL / oeeoou maken zich klaar voor MOOOC (Minimal Open Online/Offline Course) met deelname van: CLUSTERDUCK, Florian Cramer, Javier Fresneda, Jeanne van Heeswijk, Nicky Jurado, Czar Kristoff, Sven Lütticken, Eugi Manenti, Cengiz Mengü, Àngels Miralda, Shailoh Phillips, Marina Prada, Francesc Ruiz en meer geselecteerde deelnemers.

Future everyday life, geïnitieerd door Masha Domracheva en met grafische interpretatie door Austin Redman, gaat in op de leefwereld van de kunstenaarsresidenties van WOW in Amsterdam Nieuw-West (Domracheva is zelf gehuisvest in een vergelijkbare broedplaats in de buurt). WOW Amsterdam, WOW Lieven en andere broedplaatsen in Amsterdam kwamen in eerste instantie voort uit de kraakbeweging. Na verloop van tijd, toen gentrificatie een winstgevend bedrijfsmodel bleek te zijn, ging echter het streven om duurzame gemeenschappen te vormen verloren. Tijdelijke contracten verhinderen de huurders van WOW om langdurige relaties te vormen met elkaar en de locatie. Maar wat als de bewoners langer zouden blijven?

7 juli: naar aanleiding van een open call zullen kunstenaars hun gedachten presenteren over een denkbeeldige toekomst van gemeenschappelijk leven met onbeperkte wooncontracten, en scenario’s voorstellen voor een duurzamer dagelijks leven.

Dark Black geïnitieerd door Laura Castro met de kunstenaars Los Tejedores (Natalia Ortega Gámez en Ricardo Ariel Toribio), Patricia Castillo en Ro Acosta is een publicatie in wording die de grens tussen geschiedenis en fantasie opzoekt, waarbij antropocentrische geschiedschrijving als achterhaalde fictie wordt beschouwd. Opgezet vanuit de vooronderstelling van het land als een ‘zelf’, herziet het project de geschiedenis van de splitsing van het eiland Quisqueya, het huidige Haïti en de Dominicaanse Republiek, en reconstrueert deze door het vermogen van gevoel, verbeelding en twijfel in te zetten.

14 juli van 11:00 tot 13:00: Morning Ritual, een bijeenkomst geïnspireerd door Wilson Harris, met Ro Acosta en vrienden.

[Buratinas Captains] Tour de Belgique 
29/06 – 31/08 2021 – Belgian Waterways

[EN] Buratinas is a a small solar-powered boat that functions as a short-term residency space. Artists are invited to explore Belgian waterways and to work with and in this specific landscape. Buratinas is run by Buratinas Captains.
This summer the boat makes another Tour de Belgique exploring the south, east and north of Belgium.

[NL] Buratinas is een kleine boot op zonne-energie die fungeert als een korte termijn residentieplek. Kunstenaars worden uitgenodigd om de Belgische waterwegen te verkennen en om met en in dit specifieke landschap te werken. Buratinas wordt gerund door Buratinas Captains. 
Deze zomer maakt de boot opnieuw een Tour de Belgique richting het Zuiden, Oosten en Noorden van België.

À l’occasion de la fin de la première résidence d’artiste organisée au Casino Display, Andrea Mancini invite à venir découvrir ses recherches en cours depuis cinq mois. New Age Landscape propose différentes expérimentations audiovisuelles sous forme d’installations pluridisciplinaires, plongeant le public dans l’univers des « espaces autres », matériels et invisibles, imprégnés des codes de la club culture, centrale dans le parcours de l’artiste.

Le projet de musique électronique Cleveland, né en 2014, a marqué le début de la pratique sonore d’Andrea Mancini. Sa démarche s’axe principalement sur les textures créées par association de matières en apparence opposées. Ainsi, des tonalités exigeantes vont se mêler à d’autres plus apaisantes, des sonorités fluides viennent se coller à des chocs mécaniques, etc.

Dans le cadre de sa toute première résidence d’artiste, Andrea Mancini a inscrit ses recherches sur les dichotomies sonores dans une trame thématique et visuelle. Ses interventions dans les différentes pièces du Casino Display prennent la forme d’installations touchant autant aux domaines de la vidéo, de la 3D, de la scénographie qu’à ceux du design sonore et du design graphique. Elles traitent de sujets aussi divers que l’accès et le non-accès, la fluidité et l’interruption, les espaces dans les espaces. 

New Age Landscape est le résultat d’expérimentations menées in situ, elles 
sont évolutives et en aucun cas des œuvres finies en soi.

Anderhalf jaar lang hebben ze thuis gezeten, de studenten, tot ze scheel en kotsmisselijk werden van het beeldscherm. Anderhalf jaar waren andere lichamen iets om te vermijden. Scholen dicht, dan weer open en werken in bed. Thuis was in die vijandige wereld een veilige haven,maar thuis was ook de gevangenis, de kooi, en niet iedereen had de omstandigheden voor het zeggen. Schrijver Persis Bekkering vindt het dan ook niet verwonderlijk dat de lichting afstuderende kunstenaars juist nu een ‘pleasant place’ wil verbeelden.

In opdracht van Mister Motley, de Haagse kunstruimtes 1646 en Nest kijkt Bekkering naar foto’s van het afstudeerwerk van de kunstvakstudenten van dit jaar en schrijft drie essays over wat haar opvalt, over gemeenschappelijke delers, patronen, motieven en contradicties.

De kleur van een nieuw begin: een continue zonsopkomst is een onmogelijkheid

Lola Alvarez Bravo – Frida Kahlo, 1945

Terwijl alle tentoonstellingen voor het publiek waren gesloten, werd schrijfster Maartje Wortel door het Cobra Museum gevraagd te schrijven over de nieuwe tentoonstelling rond het leven en werk van Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera en andere Mexicaanse modernisten. Ze greep de kans met beide handen aan. 

‘In het geval van Kahlo ben ik niemand tegengekomen die haar haat, omdat ze, los van haar kunst een belangrijke figuur is gebleken. Hooguit zijn er mensen die zeggen: wat een cliché. Die mensen hebben gelijk, maar alsnog zeggen ze er weinig mee. Want Kahlo blijft Kahlo: iemand die ondanks alle omstandigheden fier overeind weet te blijven.’

Willem Speekenbrink – Acte de présence, gips, 145x80x95cm

Beeldhouwer Willem Speekenbrink maakt beelden als verzet tegen de dood, om het leven voort te planten. Dat geeft het leven in zijn optiek een onontkoombare erotische noodzaak. Zijn sculpturen refereren daar dan ook aan in hun lichamelijkheid. 

Alex de Vries besloot Speekenbrink op te zoeken in zijn atelier en ziet dat zijn sculpturen eerder worden gevoeld en betast, dan bedacht en gevormd.

Der NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein freut sich, Ghost Light, die erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung des Künstlers Thomas Dozol am morgigen Samstag, dem 03. Juli 2021, zu eröffnen.

Ghost Light ist eine künstlerische und analytische Erkundung der Auswirkungen des Smartphones auf unsere Erfahrung der Welt, dessen, was wir von unserer vernetzten Umgebung erwarten, und der Art und Weise, wie wir damit umgehen, was wir über unser On- und Offline-Selbst preisgeben – oder verbergen.

Für den Kunstverein hat Dozol eine ortsspezifische Rauminstallation mit Licht- und Soundelementen entworfen sowie neue Arbeiten geschaffen, darunter die neue sechzehnteilige Serie In Plain Sight, welche versucht, das Phänomen des Konsums von Nachrichten und Entertainment im digitalen Zeitalter zu interpretieren und zu hinterfragen.

Die Ausstellung wird gefördert durch das Bureau des arts plastique, die Kunststiftung NRW und die Stiftung der Sparda-Bank West.


Für den Besuch der Ausstellung ist kein negatives Cornoa-Testergebnis nötig und es muss kein termin vereinbart werden. Über eventuelle Änderungen der derzeit gültigen Regelungen informieren wir zeitnah auf der NAK Homepage und den sozialen Medien.

Summer is finally here! We’re ready to host you in the next few weeks, and then take a well-deserved break.

Our Hamza Halloubi and Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide) exhibitions remain on view until 18 July 2021. Make sure to plan your visit, if you haven’t already, to see their beautiful and thought provoking presentations before we close down for the summer.

The current issue, which opens today and runs until 30 July 2021, features Dan Oki’s feature length The Last Super 8 Film (2017), a compilation of Super 8 footage made by the Croatian artist over a period of 30 years. 

Shannon Finnegan’s Rue des Commerçants 62 Sounds (2021), made in collaboration with Sven Dehens and Chloe Chignell will also remain on view until the end of July.

During the month of August, (and rile*) will take a break. To get through this period, we recommend reading the following books, all available through rile*:

AGORA: HISK Participation at sonsbeek 20>24 Conjunctions

U bent van harte welkom / we would be happy with your presence

AGORA, a contribution by HISK in the form of a pavilion, is founded upon a sculpture-agora created by Dries Boutsen, which simultaneously embraces and is built on by site-specific interventions by Nelleke Cloosterman, Nokukhanya Langa, Gaëlle Leenhardt, Štefan Papčo, Elisa Pinto and Luca Vanello. Making use of the logic of collage, the base-sculpture is composed by fragments from exhibitions’ remainders and Boutsen’s previous works. Each of the six other contributions creates sections with particular concepts, forms and aesthetics that nevertheless maintain a sense of integration and unity and respond to sonsbeek 20>24’s conceptual framework. All the same, works of ephemeral nature or made for public distribution are hosted by the sculpture-as-a-site at the same time that they activate the latter’s character of agora: video-projections by Katya Ev, Helen Anna Flanagan, Aziz Hazara, Che-Yu Hsu, Karel Koplimets, Diego Lama, and Paulius Šliaupa, a sound piece with caption by Sandrine Morgante, performances and actions by Hanane El Farissi, Nikolay Karabinovych, Hadassa Ngamba and Shirley Villavicencio Pizango, board game sessions by Olivia Hernaïz, and a hand-out limited edition poster by Dani Ghercă. The curatorial proposal by Daniella Géo (HISK curator 2019 & 2020) explores an unconventional, rather experimental modality of exhibiting collectively. While it sheds light on the individual contributions, the collaborative nature of this project symbolically echoes a call for a more sustainable way of living, which considers both the world in terms of collectivity and working together as a premise and a necessity. Moreover, Agora enthusiastically responds to sonsbeek 20>24’s Conjunctions stance to generate intersections, and becomes a place of gathering and debate where the general public programme also takes place.

Dans le cadre du 71e festival de jeune création, la Richardière dans la Sarthe prolonge le cycle «Natura Artis Magistra» entre le 6 juin et le 4 juillet 2021. Les 25-26 et 27 juin, la Richardière s’est animée en concerts et en expositions avec la restitution de la composition Heart Convergence, l’exposition des peintures de la série Verte de Robin Salomé, en lien avec son film présenté à la galerie Jeune Création à Romainville une banane en hiver, la présentation des encres et peintures Ils dansent/ suspension de Nathalie Grenier.

In October 2021, the new art and science space of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, WONDER, will present an exhibition dedicated to zero in dialogue with art, science, technology, and philosophy. The exhibition aims to open a discussion on zero from different perspectives. Therefore, in this upcoming issue of Kunstlicht, you are invited to contribute to this discussion by investigating how zero can be an inspired concept to several disciplines intertwined.

Zero has also been explored in arts, such as the avant-garde Zero Group, founded in 1957 by Heinz Mack and Otto Piene. The group named itself Zero because the term indicates “a zone of silence and of pure possibilities for a new beginning.” The group experimented with the expressive possibilities of new materials made accessible by mass consumption, such as aluminium. For instance, in the sculpture Light Reliefs (1958), Mack imprinted geometric patterns in relief on aluminium foils, emphasising the movement created by the reflection of light on its surface. Furthermore, the group organised pop-up exhibitions, events and performances that expanded internationally, axial to both art movements and individuals.

More recently, artists have been inspired by the number zero indirectly, in their interest in quantum physics and digital technologies. For instance, the artists Dmitry Gelfand and Evelina Domnitch make installations investigating perceptions and perpetuity. In their installation ER=EPR (2017), the artists recreate two black holes through a laser projection that expands two water rotating vortices into projected shimmering halos. Through the collaboration with physicists, the artists make artworks that question recent scientific discoveries.

Less than 70 kilometres from the exhibition space is a landscape in which there sit a few very particularly shaped building blocks of red sandstone that arrived there a hundred years ago. They have entered the space in the language of modern logistics – the kind of containers you would expect most of the products that travel this world currently are housed in. It’s a language so familiar and basic, it’s almost dull: The surface of brown, recycled material, the wavy layers of paper sandwiched in between, curvy edges, dented corners, coloured straps, labels written for devices or a professional knowledge. It is its ubiquity which makes it a language. We know what to expect and what diverts from expectation – the building blocks require an odd grammar.

Nicola Arthen is an artist based in Amsterdam and London. His practice is an investigation into the mutual relations between objects’ and humans’ capacities, a negotiation between site and experience. By isolating artefacts from their peripheral state and turning them into protagonists, he is invested in their stories, struggles and unique qualities, as well as the poetics and politics of labour to reproduce these. He focuses on unexpected encounters in systems of standardisation – the trace of an individual’s hand or personal considerations in a serial product: a makeshift, cobbled up water meter, a smooth assembly line choreography to cope with the machines’ rhythms, a hesitation in a computer-generated voice. His work takes the form of installations and time-based mediums, often contributing to a moderated spatial environment.

While self-consciousness depends on internal and external processes inside and outside of the body, the body as such does not likewise depend on a self-consciousness, causing a form of asymmetry in their joint movement. The body creates errors that influence our ability to be fully conscious, which in turn causes us to unconsciously feel things or to be touched by something without actually
sensing it. 

A Body without Its Flesh is an ongoing research project that started from Benjamin Francis’s interest in dance performances and the realization that the errors that occur during the rehearsals in a dance class are often more interesting than the eventual performance. After the project’s initial output (the 2020 performance Copy and Paste as well as some sculptural works) his research into the non-harmonic chords and errors shifted to related themes such as discipline, power relations, hierarchy, religion and cleansing, resulting in a new performance that is dealing with some of the dogma’s  that exist within the art world as well as the notion of making mistakes. 

Francis has created a setting that is both theatrical and ceremonial: a stage, a classroom and a morgue –  inhabited by sculptures and props that reflect on the different references and, at set times, by performers and an audience. A Body without its Flesh is both an exhibition and an activated setting for a performance, addressing internal and external structures, body and space, repetition and imitation, decay and restoration. Our tongues are being cleansed and our computers are being rebooted. That what is uncertain  is afraid of falling into the abyss, to a point where it becomes formless.

fuse, shape, melt, decompose, fade is a new limited edition artwork by Janina Frye, commissioned for the P/////AKT Collection in an edition of 15 plus 5 AP. The edition will be on view in our P/////AKTSALON from 10 July 2021.

Janina Frye’s sculptures and installations present a concept of the human — a transformative system with connections, overlaps and entanglements linking the body to the outside world. Through the lens of new materialism, systemic theories and her personal observations, she puts forward the idea that the human skin is not a border, but an interface to the outside world. She explores how changes in our lives such as new technologies and scientific insights, as well as social, economic and climate changes, confuse the contemporary binary logic between human/object, animate/inanimate, nature/culture. She wonders how these changes induce, a process of alienation from how we perceive our bodies.

Frye is interested in the ‘the invisible’, in which immaterial and imaginary entities, fictions, phantoms and emergent processes influence this process of alienation.

For the edition fuse, shape, melt, disintegrate, fade Frye was inspired by the concept of panpsychism. Thomas Nagel describes panpsychism as a view that the basic physical constituents of the universe have mental properties, whether or not they are parts of living organisms. Any living organism, including a human being, is a complex material system. It consists of a huge number of particles combined in a special way. Each of us is composed of matter that had a largely inanimate history before finding its way onto our plates or those of our parents. It was once probably part of the sun, but matter from another galaxy would do as well. If it were brought to earth, and grass were grown in it, and milk from a cow that ate the grass were drunk by a pregnant woman, then her child’s brain would be partly composed of that matter.¹

about ima

intermission museum of art (ima) was founded in 2020 by rose van mierlo and john ros, in response to the cultural, social, environmental, economic and political fissures that make themselves evermore present during times of crisis and put stress on accepted systems of operation. ima provides a space for critical thinkers to respond to these moments of friction by investigating them as meaningful sites of production, instigating dialogues which will culminate in a public archive.

ima’s name references the question of open space: the flipping movement of a hand searching through archives, gaps in the pavement, performance interludes, tv-commercials, coffee breaks and silent pauses; all moments of unpoliced disruption that are typically un-institutional. at its core, ima therefore proposes the museum as a site of uncertainty; a building without walls; a non-hierarchical collection of interdisciplinary narratives and voices; both a guest and a host; and an exercise in cross-pollination. it resists the architectural premise of power that underwrites the white cube, democratizing the exhibition in terms of access. instead, its architectural premise is that of lateral networks; its vision decentralized and participatory.
