“The subaltern cannot speak,” so let them laugh. (1)

 

Though the imperial body came into possession of itself on the advent of the postcolonial turn, it remains subaltern.(2) Saidiya Hartman characterises the “nascent individualism of emancipation” as a “burdened individuality.”(3)
She theorises that the transformation of Black subjectivity—from subjugation to self-possession—occurred when the double bind of freedom thrust the newly emancipated into the “fold of liberal individualism,” currently presenting as neoliberalism.(4)  At worst, this abstracted equality yields antagonism; at best, pessimism.

Writing in 1989, in the full knowledge that the collapse of the Soviet Union was a matter of when, not if, Francis Fukuyama suggests that the “end of history” occurs not just with the inevitable end of the Cold War, but with the universalisation of Western liberal democracy as the final form of human government.(5) In the decades since, the subaltern European has been forced to inhabit a permanent state of liminality in which the hegemony of globalism is often cited to “numb” the after-effects of colonialism.(6) The subaltern are afforded no autonomy when surveyed under a global neoliberal economic framework, therefore it becomes the burden of the subaltern artist to evince self-determination in their work, evoking subjecthood through the poetics of gesture, humour and refusal, all the while avoiding the paternalism of commodification.

While dominant Western (read: European) centres of power assume that the postcolonial and the neoliberal do not co-exist, that the freedoms of the latter condition should usurp the trauma of the former, the Black European cultural worker mimics the precarious and very real tension of these overlapping contexts in an attempt to uncover a legiti- mate place for the subaltern in a society which otherwise considers itself “post-racial.”(7) One cannot, however, invoke the subaltern as a monolith. As noted crucially by Amelia Winata, writing on the tension between the postcolonial and the neoliberal in the renegade curatorial oeuvre of the late Okwui Enwezor: “Further complicating this reading of the subaltern body is the identity of the artist who represents it.”(8)

In the second half of the twentieth century, when the transcendence of race-based ideological movements such as Négritude and Pan-Africanism “shifted the terrain of critical thought from the racial to the national,” the claim to legitimacy for new, sovereign African nations evolved to depend on the extent to which their national cultures “catalysed and participated in the liberation struggle.”(9) For the generation of post-independence subaltern émigrées to Europe and their children, this meant the synthesis of new, forward-moving national cultures of Black Europeanism, or Afro-Europeanism, or Afropeanism.

In Having a party (hope you will be there), named for a lyric from the 2008 Lee Scratch Perry song, Mickael Marman unites himself, Perry, and the artists Jim C. Nedd, Isabella Costabile, Josiane M.H. Pozi, Deborah Joyce Holman and Shaun Motsi in consideration of their mutual ability to exploit the elastic tensions of the postcolonial-neoliberal con- dition through the interpretation of inheritance—of objects, behaviours, traumas and debts—and vitally, the refusal of this inheritance.

Costabile, attending to the mutability of perception, engages a compositional methodology which reflects on the possibility for recognisable forms and language to evolve before the viewer’s eyes. Her ready-made assemblages—much like Perry’s collages—evoke the tensions between realism and documentary, in turn complementing the pervading themes of Nedd and Pozi’s photographic and videographic works.

Importantly, the artists’ distended invocation of the Black and the banal obfuscates the neoliberal gaze through the generation of humour. Holman’s impossibly long kanekalon braid coils like a snake in a pile on the floor; Motsi limns chocolate as an “appropriately dumb” substitute for a potential depiction of a Black body for consumption; Marman’s counterfeit Prada bag bears a distinct Ankara-like impasto of paint and tape, and is titled with the airport codes of all the cities through which it transited and was produced.

The legitimacy of this humour (particularly that of the invitation, “Having a party (hope you will be there)”) lies not in its overt funniness, but in its ability to feign obscurity and self-possession through in-jokes and refusal. By toying with the “ethics and aesthetics of representation,” this diasporal presentation allows for the reconciliation of the burdened individuality of contemporary Black Europeanness, or Afro-Europeanness, or Afropeanness through the reconfiguration of the depersonalised self.(10)

During the two hour radio salon we will go into the practices of our guests, each working in their own way as programmer/curator/artist/collaborator/educator. We hope to connect different positions, find similarities and differences and learn from each others experience. We will talk about voice as an artistic medium, the practice of creating and giving a platform or space for particular voices as well as speaking vs listening. Alternately we will listen to short audio-fragments connected to the practices of our guests. We will listen and review them together during this two hour radio show.

Our Guests are:

Lisette Smits is a curator and educator working in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and Sofia (Bulgaria). Her work stems from a set of interrelated concerns and interests, that include the (agency of) voice in and outside of art; what constitutes an artistic condition; the potential of radical pedagogy; and art as social practice.
She was artistic director of Casco, Office for Art, Design and Theory in Utrecht (NL) from 1997 – 2005, where she realized projects in and outside of the confines of the exhibition format, working together with numerous artists from different backgrounds. In 2013, as associate curator of Marres, Maastricht (Netherlands), she curated a number of large scale group exhibitions around outspoken themes, such as “Depression” which presented psychological and economical states of loss; and the group show “Deep Cuts”, which investigated the political potential of sound.
Lisette Smits has lectured at various courses and art academies, both in the Netherlands and abroad. In 2016 she developed and directed the MA course Master of Voice (Sandberg Institute Amsterdam, 2016 – 2018), a one-off, two-year course exploring the human and nonhuman voice within artistic practices, with a special focus on the voice in relation to technology and gender.
Her recent project “Migrating Voices” (since 2019) aims to further engage with the agency of voice, both inside and outside of art, in a wider geographical context and cultural field. The research unpacks different manifestations of the voice, explored through real, virtual, digital, juridical, as well as fictitious bodies; and transgressing both temporal and material borders, disclosed in different performative/educational and discursive programs. The most recent program that was realized in this framework is the “School of Kindness”, which took place in Sofia (Bulgaria) last month.

Rosanna Lovell is a musician, educator, performer and radio maker from Australia who has been living and working in Berlin since 2009. Her practice focuses on feminist and postcolonial perspectives in classical and new music which she explores through performance, intervention, sound and research. She develops workshops and projects and teaches music.
She is on the board and makes radio for Freie Radios Berlin-Brandenburg, where she focuses on topics such as music, gender and accessibility in and through radio.
Her regular shows there are “Tuning In / Tuning Out – new paths to classical music” and “elle dit hosts Berliner Runde”, a platform for amplifying women’s voices heard on the radio, speaking with women* artists and creatives working in Berlin. She is part of the collectives Gender Relations in New Music (GRiNM) and Fem*_Music*_ which both deal with questions of gender and diversity in music. In 2020, together with Annika Niemann, Rosanna curated the listening sessions “Ecologies of Listening” for the ifa gallery exhibition “The Listening and The Winds”. It explored listening as a practice of actively and consciously relating to our environment. Through experimentation, listening exercises and sound walks from the fields of radio art, composition and somatic practice, three listening sessions in different urban locations invited participants to challenge their aural senses and practice active listening. It culminated in a radio show presenting the listening sessions and the exhibition for a
broader audience.

Jürg Andreas Meister was born in 1992 in Siegen, Germany. He was drawn to theater after school and worked in dramaturgy and publicity for one season at the Theater Bonn and later at the Deutsches Theater Berlin. He has worked on independent theater and performance projects in Berlin and the Ukraine. From 2011 – 2015 he studied German literature, history and art history first in Berlin and later in Moscow, Russia. Upon return to Germany he turned to the acoustic: from 2015 – 2018 he was assistant editor and director for radio drama and radio art at the radio station DLF Kultur. Since 2015 he has been a presenter and producer for programs at Freie Radios Berlin-Brandenburg and has been a board member of the organization Freies Radio Berlin e.V. since 2019. He also studied a Masters in Audio Communication and Technology at the TU Berlin and since then has worked on many semi-digital projects at the threshold of technology and art.

This radio salon brought artists together who are using the human voice as an artistic means.The use of voice as an instrument for expressing, exchanging, debating or negotiating observations and thoughts, has been a common thread through out the Salons organized by ABA over the past 10 years. Whether imposing a monologue, embroiled in dialog or bursting out in polyphony: voices often not only serve as a means of presentation, but also an artistic material within itself.Together with three of ABA’s alumni residents, we will connect different understandings and artistic approaches of the use of the voice, aiming to grasp ways in which they overlap, bouncing between the idea of the human voice as being a vehicle of thought, a source of aesthetic adoration.

CMMC performs self-invented cognitive constructions, always with a latent sense of humour. Their intensity is translated in very long performances (up to twelve hours), that have evolved over the seven years of their existence from working on quickly alternating emotions, text recitation and lengthly synchronized movements, to more stylized conceptual responses to the invitations they receive. The pieces often bring about an almost trance-like state in the performers.

CMMC performed in galleries and at art fairs internationally in Hamburg (P/ART), Manchester (Manchester Contemporary, Performance Program), Rotterdam (Wo Meine Sonne Scheint) and in Antwerp (M HKA, Trampoline gallery), Leuven (Museum M, Ithaka), Ghent (Kunstencentrum Vooruit, KIOSK), and Brussels (Poppositions). CMMC joins ABA’s residency program from June – September 2021

All the womxn’s bodies that crossed the rivers and canals of the city of Berlin are connected with each other. They were killed there, died, or only passed through these liquid spaces and together they grew into an original memory that connects distant pasts and potential futures. In this new narration a population has emerged from this violence and loss: the Womxn Waves.

Eupen, Ostbelgien, und unsere benachbarten Regionen sind schwer von den heftigen Überschwemmungen der letzten Wochen getroffen worden. Der Schock sitzt noch tief: wir sehen mit Bestürzung, wie viele Menschen ihr Leben, ihre Existenz, ihr Zuhause verloren haben. Die Verwüstung, die diese Naturkatastrophe hinterlassen hat, wird noch lange zu spüren und zu sehen sein.
 
Auch das IKOB ist nicht unversehrt geblieben: obwohl unser Museumsgebäude von der Flut verschont wurde, ist unser Außenlager in der Eupener Unterstadt, wo ein beträchtlicher Teil der IKOB Sammlung gelagert wird, erheblich betroffen. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt bitten wir um Geduld, bis wir die Schäden genau inventarisiert und die jeweiligen Künstler:innen persönlich informiert haben. Es steht fest, dass leider ein Großteil der Werke nicht gerettet werden kann.
 
Dieser erhebliche Verlust ist gleichzeitig nicht existenzbedrohend: unsere Aktivitäten und Ausstellungsprogramm gehen weiter. Wir hoffen, Sie bald im IKOB begrüßen zu dürfen und vielleicht auch ein wenig Ablenkung von den belastenden Ereignissen zu spenden. ELASTIKOMMUNIKATION 1964 – 2021

„Mein Ziel ist die Entstehung von Situationen, wo die Kommunikation zwischen Kunstwerk und Betrachter Elastizität erlangt, nicht in festgefahrene Bahnen verläuft, sondern alle Freiräume nutzt“ – so beschreibt Francis Feidler das von ihm erfundene Konzept der Elastikommunikation, welches sich als roter Faden durch seine Praxis zieht. 27 Jahre nach der Gründung des IKOB und neun Jahre nach dem Ende seiner Zeit als dessen Direktor gilt die retrospektivische Ausstellung „Elastikommunikation 1964-2021“ Francis Feidlers Lebenswerk.

Feidler versteht es, die Kunst zu nutzen, um Menschen zusammenzubringen und zu begeistern – im Jahr 2021 nun zum ersten Mal in dieser Größenordnung in der Rolle des Künstlers. Die Ausstellung zeigt fast 200 Werke zwischen 1964 und 2021, sowie Archivmaterial und Dokumentation seiner vielen Installationen im öffentlichen Raum.

Andrea fera une performance sonore (20′) à 18 h 30, en réponse aux « sons invisibles » explorés tout au long de ses expérimentations pour New Age Landscape.

Een pleidooi voor opdrachtgeverschap – kunstwerken met een specifieke bedoeling voor een specifieke plek

 

​​​Diego Rivera – Detroit Industry Murals (1932-1933)

Kunstenaar Gijs Frieling schreef voor Mister Motley een essay over opdrachtgeverschap. Hij beschrijft daarin de ontwikkelingen die ervoor hebben gezorgd dat wij in het Westen kunstwerken als autonoom object beschouwen en waarom dat volgens hem problematisch is. Veel liever ziet hij de wellness uitbater Afra Eisma uitnodigen om het zwembad en de douches te betegelen , een schoolmeester die Dan Zhu vraagt een lokaal te schilderen en de luchthavendirecteur die de start- en landingsbanen door Jan van der Ploeg in kleur laat asfalteren

Afdalen in het mysterie van Nick Drake – over het werk van Danielle Lemaire

Danielle Lemaire, Albion Boy, 2019

Toen Danielle Lemaire op een avond in 2017 in haar atelier naar een podcast luisterde, kwam geheel onverwacht het liedje Riverman van Nick Drake voorbij. Ze was alleen, ze was aan het werk en het was donker. Het nummer voerde haar mee naar haar kindertijd, naar de dagen die eens waren en niet meer terugkomen. ‘Op mijn atelier had ik die avond de beste omstandigheden gecreëerd om te kunnen werken. Ik moet een beetje eenzaam zijn om tot de juiste concentratie te komen. Door zijn muziek werd die eenzaamheid op een heel fijne manier versterkt.’ 

Wat volgde was een jarenlange fascinatie naar het leven en de muziek van Nick Drake. Haar visuele onderzoek hierover heeft zich nu vertaald naar een solo presentatie in het Stedelijk Museum Breda.

In de tentoonstelling ‘Who is she? Portretten vertellen’ in het Frans Hals Museum (locatie Hal) vormt het monumentale werk ‘Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner Too?’ van kunstenaar en cultureel activist Patricia Kaersenhout het middelpunt. Hanne Hagenaars sprak met haar over dit werk in 2019, toen Kaersenhout het tentoonstelde in de Appel. 

‘In het westen is de geschiedenis stil, dood, vergeten. Er is een tendens om een pijnlijke gebeurtenis te isoleren. De trans-Atlantische slavernij was de voorloper van het kapitalistische systeem, het heden. Daar is het systeem uit voortgekomen. Onderdeel van deze handel was het dehumaniseren van de mens, de mens werd tot instrument gemaakt ten behoeve van de winst. Ik ben van mening dat een grote groep mensen lijdt aan historische afasie.’

Decennia lang zoeken we naar vrijheid, proberen we haar vast te grijpen, maar wat grijpen we vast als we haar vinden? En kunnen we haar vinden?

Schrijver en kunstenaar Hagar Schuringa kijkt in haar scriptie naar het begrip vrijheid en op welke manier de mens naar vrijheid zoekt. Dit essay is een reis vol ontmoetingen, wandelingen en hotelkamers op het eiland Malta. Het is een reis langs verschillende stromingen, waaronder de situationisten, de romantici en de Cobra-beweging, maar ook langs kunstenaars zoals Bas Jan Ader en Thomas Thwaites.

Elena Biserna will be back in town to work on Walking from Scores. Three events are taking place at and in collaboration with CIVA.

Reservation is mandatory HERE, or via ==> On July 30 at 18h Elena discusses sound, walking, scores and maps with Jean-François Pirson and Franziska Windisch during a  talk and round table. This event is held in French.

Walking from Scores is a collection of hundred verbal and graphic scores by artists, collectives, and composers on walking, listening and sound production in urban space. The project explores the relationship between the aesthetic sphere and the everyday, the dynamics of sound and listening in urban space, and the (porous) boundaries between artist and audience.

Amber Meulenijzer will show her mobile and site-specific sound installation Saab Sculptures in three different places in public space in and around Brussels. She will be found on August 15 in the Vijverpark in Anderlecht, on August 22 in Vilvoorde and on August 27 in the center of Brussels. Precise info about the locations will follow soon.

Het Blokfluitasiel is a collaboration between instrument builder Lukas De Clerck, composer Angélica Castello, and music teachers Katelijne Lanneau and Matthias Verniers with their pupils from the Music Academies of Jette/Brussels and St.Vith. End of August, the project will culminate into performances at Meakusma Festival in Eupen on September 4, and the St. Agatha Church in Brussels on September 11. Lukas and Angélica will also play a concert at La Semaine du Son on September 1st and a workshop on Free Improvisation will be given by Angélica on September 5. This project is a cooperation with Meakusma.

Off the, Grid is een artist-run platform waar kunstenaars kunnen experimenteren en presenteren. Elk seizoen krijgt een nieuwe groep van kunstenaars de kans om de ruimte van Off the, grid toe te eigenen en drie maanden lang te gebruiken als voedingsbodem voor nieuwe ideeën en projecten. De geselecteerde groep kan beschikken over ruimte en materiaal, een budget en communicatie-ondersteuning.

Cas-co residente Sarah De Vos presenteert haar kersverse eerste monografie in M Leuven. Het boek biedt een overzicht van haar werk van 2003 tot 2021 en wordt begeleid met teksten van Els Wuyts, Frank Maes en Frederic De Meyer. Tijdens de boekpresentatie gaat Els Wuyts in gesprek met Sarah over het boek, waarna er een signeersessie zal plaatsvinden.

Op 6 en 7 augustus 2021 organiseren we twee jongerendagen (15-25 jaar) in samenwerking met Formaat vzw en Artshizzle. Onder het thema ‘Might delete this later‘ gaan ze aan de slag rond expressie, kwetsbaarheid en vergankelijkheid. Ze worden begeleid door Robbert & Frank, Dolly Bing Bing en Sarah Yu Zeebroek. Deelname is gratis.

Speel met je kinderen ‘Zie jij wat ik zie?’ in het museum. Je gaat op zoek naar de Schat van Vlieg in De Kleine Catalogus van de Collectie van S.M.A.K. De Tentoonstelling. Er zijn ook nog enkele plekken in onze workshops voor kinderen.

Geniet voor het eerst opnieuw van een concert door Citadelic Jazz en schrijf je in voor een rondleiding door curator Darius (16 jaar) in de tentoonstelling De Kleine Catalogus.

Montez Press Radio July Broadcast

This month we will be broadcasting between the 23rd-31st, including two days of live broadcasts from Tirana, Albania and two days of guest programming organized by Diversity Hire and CFGNY. 

Come by the studio at 46 Canal Street in NYC on the evening of the 23rd from 6-11pm for segments from Lunática, Civilization with Honor Levy, and Sibling Gardens with Viktor Timofeev.

On Tuesday the 27th we’ll have a day of new shows curated by Arjun Ram Srivatsa and Kevin Lozano, the hosts of Diversity Hire — a podcast about being POC in media — who have asked their best friends in music, art, and journalism to talk to them about how to start an ethical business, share their favorite tunes, and spill all the best gossip from coast to coast. 

On Wednesday the 28th we will be broadcasting live from Auto Italia in London on the occassion of their current exhibition by CFGNY, ‘Collecting Dissonance’, based around a garment collection. The garments are presented as a part of a sculptural installation, which employs motifs and visual languages drawn from the group’s ongoing examination of the economic and social contexts of ‘cuteness’: subcultural commodity aesthetics that include kawaii (かわいい) in Japan, Kě’ài (可爱) in China and Aegyo (애교) in South Korea. CFGNY (Concept Foreign Garments New York / Cute Fucking Gay New York) began in 2016 as an ongoing dialogue between Tin Nguyen and Daniel Chew on the intersections of fashion, race, identity and sexuality. Joined by Kirsten Kilponen and Ten Izu in 2020, CFGNY continually returns to the term ‘vaguely Asian’: an understanding of racial identity as a specific cultural experience combined with the experience of being perceived as other.

OPEN CALL – ARTIST IN RESIDENCY – Where are we now?

IKOB – Museum of Contemporary Art in Eupen, Belgium, and Greylight Projects – platform for art and culture in Heerlen, The Netherlands, launch an Open Call for a three-month residency of (September-November 2021). The residency takes place in the framework of the 2021 Artist Project of Very Contemporary, a network between different art spaces and museums in the Euregio-Meuse-Rhine region. We invite artists who are based in the Netherlands, Belgium or Germany to apply.

Guided by the question “Where are we now?,” the residency invites an artist to reflect on the particularities of the Euregio-Meuse-Rhine region. In 2019, Very Contemporary launched WONDERTOURS, a project aimed to bridge the distance between the different institutions by offering cycle routes in this border region.

The artist is invited to offer new perspective on these routes, responding to distance and proximity, landscapes and/or borders between the institutions. The project may address or reflect on themes such as sustainability, trans-cultural dialogue, cultural heritage or geopolitics specific to the region. The focus of the residency is to develop a work or project within the context of “Where are we now?”

Le Casino Luxembourg et LAGERKULTUR s’associent pour un afterwork musical au Parc Central du Kirchberg (la terrasse du KYOSK a été spécialement réaménagée pour l’occasion) avec, en tête d’affiche, Andrea Mancini aka Cleveland, premier artiste en résidence du Casino Display, qui ici présente une facette de sa pratique différente de celles dévoilées dans l’exposition New Age Landscape, actuellement en cours. Sa prestation sera précédée par les sets électro éclectiques de Mélange Étrange et de waters. 

L’évènement complète le programme d’été du Casino Luxembourg que constituent les expositions suivantes :

— New Age Landscape (au Casino Display) : projet d’Andrea Mancini qui propose différentes expérimentations sonores et visuelles sous forme d’installations pluridisciplinaires, plongeant le public dans l’univers des « espaces autres » (jusqu’au 31 juillet) ;

— Laby-Foot : Installation participative de Benedetto Bufalino qui invite à jouer au football dans le labyrinthe végétal du Parc Central. Avis aux amateur·rice·s (jusqu’au 5 septembre) ;

— Brave New World Order : la Triennale Jeune Création, conçue comme une plateforme pour les artistes émergent·e·s, présentée au Casino Luxembourg et aux Rotondes (jusqu’au 29 août).

Het viel schrijver Persis Bekkering op dat bij het afstudeerwerk van de kunstacademies dit jaar er veel interesse bestaat voor het landschap. En dan met name het maakbare landschap, het sublieme landschap, het landschap als bepaald door de mens. “De natuur – als we die opvatten als het angstaanjagende, het onbestuurbare en zelfvoorzienende, als het andere – is volledig geabsorbeerd door cultuur.”

In opdracht van Mister Motley, de Haagse kunstruimtes 1646 en Nest kijkt ze naar het afstudeerwerk van de kunstvakstudenten van dit jaar en schrijft drie essays over wat haar opvalt, over gemeenschappelijke delers, patronen, motieven en contradicties. 

Aflevering drie gaat over het maakbare landschap, het nieuwe sublieme.

Ko van ’t Hek schrijft voor Mister Motley over zijn ontmoetingen met kunstwerken. Deze maand kijkt hij naar een installatie van Berlinde De Bruyckere in het Bonnefanten en voelt zich op een rare manier verbonden met de geschiedenis. Hij kijkt naar de koeienhuiden en vergeet wie hij ook alweer was.

In opdracht van Mister Motley, de Haagse kunstruimtes 1646 en Nest kijkt Persis Bekkering naar het afstudeerwerk van de kunstvakstudenten van dit jaar en schrijft drie essays over wat haar opvalt, over gemeenschappelijke delers, patronen, motieven en contradicties. Aflevering twee: maskers die bevrijden, beschermen en intimiteit zoeken.

Ze dacht aan de animatiefilm ‘Anomalisa’ van Charlie Kaufman toen ze her en der maskers zag opduiken in de afstudeerwerken. 
Maskers betekenen echter hier iets heel anders dan in het klassieke verhaal van Anomalisa, waarin het masker ons de toegang ontzegt tot de eigenheid van de ander. “Ze zijn in deze kunstwerken juist een bevrijding, ze knippen de ketenen door die bepaalt en beperkt hoe een vrouwelijk lichaam kan worden gezien, ze beschermen ons tegen boze geesten of de almacht van digitale surveillance, ze openen de deur naar een gedeelde ervaring, door ons toe te staan in het lichaam van iemand anders te kunnen kruipen.”

In this one hour radio piece, Marjolein vd Meer takes you on a journey through inspirations and explorations around her latest project ‘I am several’ which she is currently realizing at Fresh A.I.R. Marjolein van der Meer (The Netherlands, 1986) is a spoken word artist, a singer and musician, performer and director of performance. Loosely combining music, image and text she creates multi-layered songs, concepts and performances, soundscapes and audio pieces that reveal her way of looking at the world. Her work is playful and combines the abstract with daily life, trying to reach beyond the surface through building structures of language and music, using the subconscious, poetry and movement. Together with musician Raymond Deirkauf, Marjolein has an electronic music duo called “I, poor romantic”. The duo released their first single “Cool, oh no Cool” in 2017 and an EP based on Grimm fairy tales in 2019. Grimm toured extensively through theaters in The Netherlands and Belgium. Marjolein van der Meer previously created performances for Frascati and de Brakke Grond in Amsterdam, NL. Her audio documentaries were broadcast on the Dutch national radio (Hollanddoc) and online through national newspaper NRC.
I AM SEVERAL is an electronic music piece leading up to a performance, using a polyphony of voices, from the inside and out, to address diversity. It is about the different people we can be, pluriformity versus surrender, the individual versus the group. The piece uses everyday situations, sounds and movement to create a certain unity, a choir of people in which each individual’s autonomy can be reflected. This project is about finding ones voice, about being autonomous and the loneliness this can bring forth, but also about ways in which we are so elementary alike. Made in collaboration with choreographer Merel Franx.

“Ў” Gallery is a space of the creative and intellectual Belarus, a free platform for local and international cultural dialogue, which contributes to the current understanding of the prominent role of culture and art in modern society.
The exhibition space of the “Ў” Gallery is a place for experimentation, freedom of creative expression, communication between the artist and the viewer. The Gallery is carefully watching the best art projects in Eastern and Western Europe to promote the involvement of contemporary Belarusian art to the world. We do our best to ensure that contemporary Belarusian art, projects and personalities of the art community in Belarus are not only ever present in the Belarusian public, but become more visible in the European artistic context.
“Ў” Gallery supports interdisciplinary research projects in collaboration with the professional expert community of Belarus in such scientific fields as visual culture and critical urban studies, philosophy, sociology, gender, contemporary history and the society.
The organization of educational programs, round tables, discussions, workshops, lectures, seminars, meetings with outstanding contemporary art critics is a priority for the Gallery. All of this helps to create an active communication platform designed for the interaction of viewers, artists, curators, art managers, critics and researchers. We are sure that it makes a great contribution to the development of the Belarusian art criticism, the tradition of analytical artistic work, the establishment of the cultural policy of Belarus.
“Ў” Gallery is a space of mediation between representatives of the independent art, business, NGO sector and the civil society. Gallery’s team pays special attention to work and mediation programs for visitors with disabilities because the “Ў” Gallery of Contemporary Art is a place for everybody — without exception!

During the two hour Air Salon we will focus on the practice of our guests, each working in in different ways as programmer/curator/artist collaborator educator with the agency of voice. Through conversation we will connect different positions, find similarities and differences and learn from each others experience. Our main topics will be: voice as an artistic medium, the practice of creating and giving a platform, the agency of speaking vs. listening as well as voicing de-centred narratives. Alternately we will listen to short audio-fragments connected to the practices of our guests.

In different contexts, collaborations and spaces she explores the political and ethical possibilities of conscious listening and how it can be used as a feminist, decolonial and sustainable tool. In both her performative and her installative works, she constantly oriented towards questions of commonality, collaboration, the dissolving authorship, and the challenges of self-precarization.

CMMC performs self-invented cognitive constructions, always with a latent sense of humour. Their intensity is translated in very long performances (up to twelve hours), that have evolved over the seven years of their existence from working on quickly alternating emotions, text recitation and lengthly synchronized movements, to more stylized conceptual responses to the invitations they receive. The pieces often bring about an almost trance-like state in the performers.

CMMC performed in galleries and at art fairs internationally in Hamburg (P/ART), Manchester (Manchester Contemporary, Performance Program), Rotterdam (Wo Meine Sonne Scheint) and in Antwerp (M HKA, Trampoline gallery), Leuven (Museum M, Ithaka), Ghent (Kunstencentrum Vooruit, KIOSK), and Brussels (Poppositions). CMMC joins ABA’s residency program from June – September 2021

All the womxn’s bodies that crossed the rivers and canals of the city of Berlin are connected with each other. They were killed there, died, or only passed through these liquid spaces and together they grew into an original memory that connects distant pasts and potential futures. In this new narration a population has emerged from this violence and loss: the Womxn Waves.

L21 takes over Tilde!

Dear friends, colleagues, comrades and subscribers of this list, I am very sorry for the big hiatus since I wrote you last time, specially because things have been happening at Tilde but I could not find the time to let you know about it, as things were also happening in other sides of my life.

Around a month ago we opened a very special exhibition in collaboration with L21, a gallery from Mallorca that I know for many years. This exhibition shows the work of Fatima de Juan and Hugo Rocci and at the same time tries to show how Tilde is an space that is constantly rethinking different models of collaboration, in this occasion, with a commercial gallery.

The exhibition will be open until the 25th of July, available 24/7-365 so you can write on Instagram, Facebook, email or WhatsApp if you prefer a more personal approach for booking an appointment.

Tilde is also in the process of looking for an intern or a sparring partner, so if you know someone who would be interested in discussing some of our upcoming ideas, please, send them over! We will be sending around one email per month and our apologies if you do not want to be on this list, please unsubscribe. You can also follow some of the updates through the website, instagram or facebook. Please, if you do have any feedback, question or proposal in relation to the project do not hesitate to contact us.

After this exhibition Tilde will be closed until the 3rd of September, when we will come back with a very special exhibition with the works of Irene Ha, Nora Turato, Lily van der Stokker, Jack Jaeger, Bernadette Corporation, Ivan Cheng and Lee Lozano.

Walking from Scores – Elena Biserna
Elena Biserna will be back in town to work on Walking from Scores. Three events are taking place at and in collaboration with CIVA.
•> An expo will be up from now until August 8.
•> From July 27 to 30, Elena will guide a workshop, open for youths and adults. For the workshop reservation is mandatory.
•> On July 30 the project will be concluded with a conference with guests Jean-François Pirson and Franziska Windisch.
Walking from Scores is a collection of hundred verbal and graphic scores by artists, collectives, and composers on walking, listening and sound production in urban space. The project explores the relationship between the aesthetic sphere and the everyday, the dynamics of sound and listening in urban space, and the (porous) boundaries between artist and audience.

Het Blokfluitasiel is a collaboration between instrument builder Lukas De Clerck, composer Angélica Castello, and music teachers Katelijne Lanneau and Matthias Verniers with their pupils from the Music Academies of Jette/Brussels and St.Vith. End of August, the project will culminate into performances at Meakusma Festival in Eupen on September 4, and the St. Agatha Church in Brussels on September 11. Lukas and Angélica will also play a concert at La Semaine du Son on September 1st and a workshop on Free Improvisation will be given by Angélica on September 5. This project is a cooperation with Meakusma.

Werelden die kunnen zijn – over propaganda(kunst) in Nederland

In 2009 schreef ik het essay Post-Propaganda, voor het toenmalige Fonds voor Beeldende Kunsten, Vormgeving en Bouwkunst, Amsterdam – heden ten dage het Mondriaan Fonds. Daarin beargumenteerde ik dat het begrip propaganda niet exclusief toebehoord aan de zogeheten “totalitaire” regimes van de 20ste eeuw, maar dat er altijd een relatie bestaat tussen kunst en macht, ook in vermeende liberale democratieën zoals de Nederlandse.

Quintus Jan Telting was een denker – over zijn werk in de Surinaamse school

Eén dag voor de coronasluiting schoot ik aan het eind van de middag (“ik kom volgende week wel terug”) bij het Stedelijk naar binnen om De Surinaamse school te bekijken. In de haast had ik slechts drie namen gekrabbeld in mijn aantekenboekje: “Baag – Quintus Jan Telting – Ron Flu, vooral Prostitutes 1977”.

Bijna een half jaar later ben ik er weer. Ik begrijp de aanwijzing van de suppoost verkeerd zodat ik de tentoonstelling in omgekeerde richting bekijk, beginnend met de laatste zaal en juist in die zaal zie ik de Baag – Quintus Jan Telting – Ron Flu van mijn eerdere bezoek. Deze drie blijven ook nu voor mij de meest interessante kunstenaars van de tentoonstelling en van hen blijf ik uiteindelijk haken bij Quintus Jan Telting (1931 – 2003). Over hem gaat dit stuk.

Een vlucht van de tijd

Vluchten van de tijd die ons achterna lijkt te zitten. Dat willen we allemaal wel eens in onze westerse, kapitalistische prestatiemaatschappij. Afgelopen anderhalf jaar kreeg dit verlangen om te ontsnappen een andere wending. We verlangden ernaar de tijd vooruit te kunnen spoelen of helemaal over te slaan om in een andere realiteit te kunnen leven.

En juist nu we het ene escapisme van de tijd voorzichtig achter ons laten, komt er een ander escapisme voor in de plaats: we hebben tijd in te halen. We hebben tijd te weinig om op het terras te zitten, naar het museum te gaan, en naar de bios, naar vrienden, naar cafés – en het liefst allemaal tegelijkertijd. Het ene escapisme van de tijd vervangt dus het andere.

Sanne de Vries schrijft voor Mister Motley over de noodzaak om ons eigen tijdsbeeld te begrijpen, zodat we niet steeds van de tijd hoeven te vluchten. Ze kijkt daarbij naar oosterse tijdsbegrippen, naar Bergson en Deleuze, maar ook naar de kunstwerken van Liza Houben en George Voronov uit de tentoonstelling ‘The art of escapism’ in Melkweg Expo.

Sacha Bronwasser reageert tweemaandelijks op een kunstwerk middels een fictief kort verhaal. Afgelopen week verscheen de vijfde editie van deze serie, getiteld: Licht.

‘Op het moment van inslag is het twee minuten en veertien seconden over elf. Zonnige ochtend, strakblauwe lucht, windstil. In alle berichten zal vermeld worden: een stralende dag. 
De snelheid van licht is groter dan die van geluid. Dit licht werpt zich vooruit terwijl de klap nog moet komen. Een fractie zit er maar tussen en in deze fractie staat alles stil. Er is een hiervóór en een hierna en we bevinden ons precies daartussen, in de gelegenheid om de zaak goed te bestuderen. Hoe vaak doet die kans zich voor? Nou dan.’

Brussels Gallery Weekend returns from 9 -12 September!

After this tumultuous year, the Brussels Gallery Weekend is immensely excited to return to the capital of Europe from Thursday, 9 September. This fourteenth edition of the event is set to be a feast for the eyes, packed full of surprises, with no fewer than forty-six art galleries participating in the circuit this year.

As a regular fixture on the annual arts scene for almost fifteen years, the Brussels Gallery Weekend aims to highlight the dynamism of the arts sector, showcasing the know-how and talent of artists with reputations stretching far beyond Belgium, thereby affirming our support and engagement with the Belgian art scene.

Last year, the event was of course disrupted, but looking to the future, the team have made the best of things, modernising and becoming ever stronger, thanks in particular to the brand new website and exhibitions in shop windows. The team of organisers – led by Sybille du Roy de Blicquy, director of BGW – are delighted to be welcoming public visitors back to this fourteenth edition, with a focus on art that is pleasing to the eye while of course still paying attention to the health and safety of visitors. 

This year, the BGW is bigger and better than ever, involving a total of forty-six galleries (including Baronian Xippas, Clearing, etc.) – equal to a twenty percent increase – including a number of newcomers such as Jacqueline Martins, Nino Mier, Super Dakota, Ballroom Project or Nosbaum Reding (the full list can be consulted on: www.brusselsgalleryweekend.com). 

Fourteen guest venues – mostly institutions and artist spaces are being added to the route and complete the programme, helping to keep art thriving in Brussels.

This year also sees the return of the “Generation Brussels” exhibition. The exhibition’s fourth edition, coordinated by its two curators, Dagmar Dirckx & Zeynep Kubat, will explore identity, showcasing work by eleven young artists, at the Tour à Plomb cultural centre and the Lebeau building in Sablon. 

Other highlights include the Project by young artists from Home 18-24, the shop window of Kunst Aan Zet, a project by IRSA, as well as our highly popular guided tours which will also be on offer again. And another new thing: you can find QR codes at the entrances to the galleries; simply scan these using your mobile phone to access a sound file in which gallery owners present their spaces and works, offering a more personalised experience…

Yet another reason to save the date of the weekend of 9-12 September, and make sure you don’t miss the fourteenth Brussels Gallery Weekend.
