TOMORROW starts the Brussels Gallery Weekend.  Come and discover from 11 am to 9 pm the 46 participating galleries, our exhibition Generation Brussels, 14 institutions of our Guest Venues, and various public events. We also provide guided tours in the galleries which can be booked through this link.

Welcome back to WIELS! Tomorrow night we celebrate the opening of the long-awaited exhibition Marcel Broodthaers – Industrial Poems, Open Letters that brings together for the first time the plastic plates of the famous conceptual artist. Opening in parallel is the solo exhibition of R. H. Quaytman presenting a new body of paintings: Modern Subjects, Chapter Zero. Dear reader,

Returning from this ruthless, climate-change inflicted summer, we are thrilled to re/open a number of inquisitive presentations that will unfold over the course of the late summer/fall.
 
First up is the synchronous re/launch of three exhibitions by Oussama Tabti, Hamza Halloubi, and Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide) this Thursday 9 September, 12:00–21:00, as part of Brussels Gallery Weekend.
 

 
With Parlophones – Parcours, Oussama Tabti brings a poly-narrative sound-installation to seven locations throughout Brussels, of which the facade of the -building is one. 
 
This collection of doorbells invites visitors to listen to the personal stories of people who made Brussels their home, from migrants and refugees to expats and those gone astray. As a collection, they form a patchwork of chronicles about departures and arrivals and ask important questions about belonging and citizenship within an urban context.
 

 
Hamza Halloubi’s You left me my lips, and they shape words, even in silence and Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide)’s Four Months, Four Million Light Years are retakes of the exhibitions we presented in the spring and early summer with Kunstenfestivaldesarts. 
 
Both presentations centre experiences of otherness in the wake of diverging post/neo-colonial realities and translate these into captivating questions about image-making and responsibility.
 

 
For the new , we present Alina Cristea’s Bucharest. The City—Me (2017–…), in which the artist’s singular use of analogue photography, sound recordings, and diary texts results in a poetic portrait of Bucharest. On view on site and our www until Thursday 30 September.
 

 
In distribution news, we are pleased to announce that will be participating in Hitting Puberty, a day-long celebration of Düsseldorf’s IMAI’s (inter media art institute) fifteenth anniversary on Saturday 11 September.
 
We’ve put together a programme entitled Dear Puberty, for this special occasion which will show works by Emily Vey Duke & Cooper Battersby, Ho Tzu Nyen, Jacques Lennep, Lucile Desamory, Messieurs Delmotte, and Steve Reinke. Alongside this screening, director Niels will deliver a speculative presentation on distribution named Dear Distribution. 
 
Please note that these events will take place in Düsseldorf!
 
In other news, we are thrilled to welcome two dynamic colleagues to our team: Inge Coolsaet and Katoucha Ngombe.
 
 
 
Inge recently started as ‘ head of communications, a position that will allow her to use both her experience as a film critic and her skills managing communication in different cultural contexts. Katoucha is our new receptionist who previously worked as a doula and who has a passion for translating notions of care to her reception duties. 
 
We are excited to continue the  story with our two new team members and can’t wait for you to meet them!

Nous sommes plus qu’heureux de pouvoir vous proposer une série d’expositions et d’activités cet automne après un été si déprimant. 

On entame le mois de septembre avec la (ré)ouverture synchronisée de trois expositions d’Oussama Tabti, Hamza Halloubi et Sara Sejin Chang. Celle-ci aura lieu le jeudi 9 septembre, 12:00—21:00, dans le cadre du Brussels Gallery Weekend.

Parlophones – Parcours d’Oussama Tabti est une installation sonore. L’artiste propose une promenade urbaine avec une session d’écoute individuelle à sept différents endroits, dont la façade du bâtiment . 

Les sonnettes racontent les histoires de ceux et celles qui ont fait de Bruxelles leur chez-soi. Migrants, réfugiés, expatriés et âmes perdues, leurs histoires forment un patchwork de départs et d’arrivées. Leurs récits soulèvent des questions pertinentes sur l’engagement et la citoyenneté dans un contexte urbain.

You left me my lips, and they shape words, even in silence de Hamza Halloubi et Four Months, Four Million Light Years de Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide) ont été présentées une première fois pendant le printemps, en collaboration avec Kunstenfestivaldesarts. 
 
Les deux expositions portent sur l’identité, l’altérité dans un monde post- et néocolonial par le biais de la perception de l’autre et la notion de responsabilité citoyenne.

Notre nouvelle édition d’propose Bucharest. The City — Me d’Alina Cristea (2017— …).
L’artiste crée un portrait personnel et poétique de sa ville natale au travers de photos, d’extraits sonores et de fragments de journal intime. Le film sera disponible jusqu’au jeudi 30 septembre dans la rue des Commerçants et sur notre site. 
 

 
Il y a aussi du nouveau du côté de la distribution. Nous avons le plaisir d’annoncer qu’ARGOS participera à Hitting Puberty, programme festif du quinzième anniversaire de l’IMAI (inter media art institute), le samedi 11 septembre à Düsseldorf.

Katoucha est notre nouvelle réceptionniste. Son expérience de doula (sage-femme) lui permettra d’inclure des idées de bien-être au sein de l’accueil d’. 

C’est avec beaucoup d’enthousiasme que nous les accueillons parmi nous et nous avons hâte que vous puissiez les rencontrer également.

Na een zomer die zelfs de hardnekkigste klimaatsceptici aan het twijfelen bracht zijn we meer dan verheugd dat we jullie dit najaar een reeks pertinente en bezielende voorstellen kunnen en mogen aandragen. 

Met Oussama Tabti, Hamza Halloubi en Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide) wordt september ingezet met de synchrone (her)opening van drie tentoonstellingen. Dit gebeurt nu donderdag 9 september, 12:00—21:00, in het kader van het Brussels Gallery Weekend.
 

 
Parlophones – Parcours, de geluidswandeling van Oussama Tabti, houdt halte op zeven Brusselse locaties waaronder de façade van het -gebouw. 

De kunstenaar vertelt met zijn collecties van deurbellen de verhalen van mensen die van de hoofdstad hun thuis maakten, van migranten en vluchtelingen tot expats en andere verdwaalde zielen. Samen vormen ze een een lappendeken van getuigenissen over reizen en aankomen en stellen ze belangrijke vragen over betrokkenheid en burgerschap in een stedelijke context.
 

 
Hamza Halloubi’s You left me my lips, and they shape words, even in silence en Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide)’s Four Months, Four Million Light Years zijn heropeningen van de tentoonstellingen die in het voorjaar in samenwerking met Kunstenfestivaldesarts gepresenteerd werden. 
 
In beide tentoonstellingen worden ervaringen van anders-zijn in een post- en neokoloniale wereld centraal geplaatst en worden beeldvorming en maatschappelijke verantwoordelijkheid onder de loep genomen. 
 

 
De nieuwe toont Alina Cristea’s Bucharest. The City — Me (2017—ongoing). Daarin worden analoge fotografie, geluidsopnames en dagboekteksten op eigenzinnige wijze verweven. Het resultaat is een persoonlijk en poëtisch portret van Boekarest. De film wordt tot en met donderdag 30 september beschikbaar gemaakt in de koopliedenstraat en op onze website. 
 

 
Op vlak van distributie zijn we blij te kunnen aankondigen dat op zaterdag 11 september, 15:00–21:30, zal deelnemen aan Hitting Puberty, het feestelijke programma ter ere van de vijftiende verjaardag van IMAI (inter media art institute) in Düsseldorf. 
 
Voor deze gelegenheid hebben we een programma samengesteld, Dear Puberty, met films uit onze collecties van Emily Vey Duke & Cooper Battersby, Ho Tzu Nyen, Jacques Lennep, Lucile Desamory, Messieurs Delmotte en Steve Reinke. Inge begon onlangs als communicatieverantwoordelijke bij , een functie waarin ze zowel haar werk als filmjournalist als haar ervaringen met communicatie in verschillende culturele contexten zal kunnen toepassen. Katoucha is onze nieuwe receptioniste. Zij werkte eerder als doula en vertaalt haar noties van zorg en welzijn graag naar een warm onthaal bij . 

Samen werken we enthousiast verder aan het verhaal en kijken we reikhalzend uit naar het vervolg.

Der NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein freut sich mit Christine Liebich und Gerold Miller zwei zeitgenössische bildhauerische Positionen in ihrer ersten gemeinsamen Doppelausstellung präsentieren zu dürfen.

Gerold Miller zeigt aus seiner Werkreihe Monoform eine ortsspezifische Arbeit, die mit den räumlichen und architektonischen Gegebenheiten des NAK in einen Dialog tritt und diese neu interpretiert. Christine Liebich verhandelt dagegen in ihren Skulpturen die Dualismen der heutigen Zeit. Die aus Baustahl gefertigten Arbeiten befragen das Verhältnis von Kultur und Natur. In der Werkreihe Permanent Moment erstmals geradezu naturalistisch arbeitend werden pulverbeschichtete Stahl-Pusteblumen zu Symbolen der Hoffnung, Stärke und Zuversicht.

Zudem zeigt die Künstlerin im Außenbereich des umgebenden Parks sowie auf dem Dach und damit im öffentlichen Raum zwei weitere großformatige Skulpturen der neuen Serie. Auch Gerold Miller bespielt den Außenraum mit einer Skulptur aus der Reihe der Verstärker.

Darüber hinaus erscheinen von beiden Künstler*innen neue Editionen zur Ausstellung, die während der Ausstellungsdauer im Kunstverein erhältlich sein werden.

Für den Besuch der Eröffnung gilt die 3G-Regel, d.h. Besucher_innen müssen geimpft, genesen oder getestet sein. Ein Nachweis ist vor Ort zu erbringen. Summer is still here in Netwerk Aalst! We show films in open air until 18 September and wave goodbye to summer on 19 September together with the residents of Gardens of Netwerk, Inside Out and Kunstoevers.

Meanwhile there is more to experience from September onwards. On Saturday 11 September we open a new exhibition, If I Could Wish for Something by Dora García. From 21 September, we will again be playing the best films in our cinema. Read on to find out what else is happening.

IF I COULD WISH FOR SOMETHING

EXHIBTION – The exhibition If I Could Wish For Something brings together two recent films by Dora Garcia, Love With Obstacles and If I Could Wish For Something. Both films are part of Amor Rojo, a work-in-progress that studies Alexandra Kollontai (1872-1952). Alexandra Kollontai was a Marxist theoretician and figure of the October Revolution, a defender of the rights of women and sexual activist. Her insights seemed written for a future world and are more relevant today than ever.

In recent years, García has been studying a great amount of historical letters, written by remarkable women to their lovers, their comrades, their political allies or their enemies, or to themselves in the form of a diary. In all of them there is a moment of deep disappointment, of disenchantment, the depth of the sorrow in direct proportion to the enthusiasm that their amorous or political engagement had awakened in them.

SUMMER – Netwerk Aalst celebrates this year’s summer with you! Until 19 September we present a summer program full of activities at the Houtkaai. For the neighborhood and by the neighborhood.

On Saturday 11 September, from 2 pm to 6 pm, the residents of Gardens of Netwerk open the doors of their studios for a studio visit. 

On Sunday 19 September, we wave goodbye to summer together with the residents, Inside Out and Kunstoevers. The residents organize the exhibition A day in the park.

When successful, we repeat the films so that you don’t have to miss a thing. New is that Film Fest Gent will drop by every 3rd Tuesday of the month with an avant-premiere. THE BODIES

The Bodies, a research group consisting of artists, a curator, an art historian, a writer… will gather in real time for the first time since the global health crisis. Exhibition : 09.09.2021 – 30.10.2021

For its 28th exhibition, OV Project presents a dialogue between the work of Bernd Lohaus and the one of Ante Timmermans, two artists from a different generation who share a common visual and linguistic language.

The selection features emblematic sculptures and drawings by Bernd Lohaus as well as drawings and wooden panels by Ante Timmermans. 
 

Born in Germany, Bernd Lohaus (1940 — 2010) spent most of his working life in Antwerp, where he developed a body of work centred around materials such as wood, stone, paper and rope. Stripped from any superfluous elements, the bare material gives place to formally simple, yet engaging works. An undeniable aestheticism emanates from Bernd Lohaus’ oeuvre: a body of work combining the simplicity of the form, the natural materials and the semantic force of language.

Ante Timmermans (1976°) is a Belgian multidisciplinary artist from Ghent. He works with drawings, paintings, sculptures and performative installations. The work of Ante Timmermans is an invitation to reflect on our relationship to things. His works are organised and structured so as to mirror our own social and political layouts. With the use of intermingled lines, of circles and triangular shapes resembling wedges, his compositions form abstract expressions embedded in a continuous search for meaning.

fluent is pleased to present A rural death, an exhibition and discursive program bringing together artists, theorists and activists who examine non-urban-centric forms of death.

The imposition of one way of thinking and making death visible during the current health crisis, erases the presence of those bodies and practices that escape the channels of urban interconnection and contact. The idea of the countryside becomes reduced to an escapist image, rooted in the romantic imagination and in the contemporary dispossession of indigenous and peasant cultures. Through bio-political regimes in which the very definition of life is controlled through the bodies, images and legal structures that choreograph our movements, A rural death delves into contemporary forms of power and distributed mortality as a metaphor of our time.

Exploring death as a social form, the exhibition proposes alternative thresholds that take into account the elderly in rural contexts, life-death cosmologies as non-binary entities, agricultural extractivism as contagion, as well as the loss of biodiversity and collective mournings for the current multiple processes of massive extinctions. Through a series of formal languages ​​that address these material conditions, A rural death questions the laws, liturgies, ontologies, beliefs and codes that expand our imaginary of individual and collective perenniality.

Emanuele Marcuccio was born in Veneto to a family of Apulian landowners, giving life to an accent that preserves the worst aspects of both inflections. The industrial traditions of the north-east accustomed him – from an early age – to the prospect of an entrepreneurial life, but it was the circumstances of life that led him to deal with art. In an attempt to remedy the nostalgia of a more productive world, his art often relies on local iron and steel industries, with which he shares the same formal priorities: desire for efficiency and hard work. The war to the formal approximation is the aspect that most characterizes Marcuccio’s practice, despite that, the human tragedy of production as a perpetration transpires in each of his piece making it profoundly human.

Deze week starten Mister Motley en presentator Luuk Heezen weer met een nieuw seizoen Kunst is Lang. Je hoort elke week een uitgebreid gesprek met een hedendaagse kunstenaar over het laatste werk, inspiratiebronnen en drijfveren. Mét diepgang, maar zonder ingewikkeld jargon. 

De komende veertig weken uploaden we iedere woensdag een nieuwe aflevering op onze kanalen en website.
De eerste kunstenaars van het nieuwe seizoen maken we dan ook graag bekend:

Atelierbezoek: Cora van Antwerpen
 

Op de Internationale Vrouwendag van 8 maart 2021 luisterde kunstenaar Cora van Antwerpen naar de radio waar ze vrouwen met een zekere academische afstandelijkheid hoorde discussiëren over seksueel misbruik. Ze ergerde zich mateloos aan het gebrek aan invoelingsvermogen dat het gesprek domineerde. In haar beleving is het nu juist die feitelijke, koude en klinische benadering van het onderwerp die vrouwen die onderhevig zijn aan lichamelijke en geestelijke intimidatie zo frustreert en teleurstelt. 

Deze gebeurtenis zette haar aan het denken en ze maakte een nieuwe serie schilderijen. De serie is haar geweldloze alternatief in een wereld waar lichamelijke agressie jegens vrouwens een machtsmiddel is dat op alle mogelijke manieren bestreden moet worden.

De kunst als sloophamer 

 

Toen Lex van der Steen  in zijn afstudeerjaar zat onderzocht hij hoe hij in zijn onderwijspraktijk de relatie tussen mens en klimaat kon verbeteren. Hij kwam uit bij ‘object-georiënteerd kunstonderwijs’. Een vorm van kunstonderwijs die in essentie poogt zo min mogelijk onderwijs te zijn. Een vorm die inherent allergisch is voor de doelgerichtheid van het huidige (kunst)onderwijs. 
Een van de lessen tijdens zijn studie bestond enkel uit wandelen en zwemmen in een kanaal. Die ene les als docent in spe heeft zijn perspectief op de wereld en op kunsteducatie voorgoed veranderd.

Camoufleur met à disposition des ateliers à destination d’acteurs au croisement des arts plastiques et compte une salle de 80 m² accueillant une programmation artistique nationale et européenne se développant en cycles saisonniers, ainsi que des évènements plus spontanés.
À l’occasion des POAA, Camoufleur vous invite à découvrir cet espace et à rencontrer des artistes d’univers et disciplines différentes (architecture, design, sérigraphie, édition, etc.).

La Chambre d’eau, Le Favril
“Métamorphoses”

Pendant 3 mois, La chambre d’eau accueille sur ses trois hectares arborés, dix propositions pluridisciplinaires d’artistes, dans un jeu de dialogue avec les lieux. Elles ont été réalisées à partir d’expérimentations, durant des temps de résidences et de propositions performatives et participatives
au cours des deux dernières années.
L’exposition “Métamorphoses”, c’est la possibilité de visiter un parcours d’œuvres, mais pas seulement. Durant trois mois, l’exposition sera ponctuée de concerts, de spectacles, d’ateliers, de stages, de rassemblements et de rencontres extérieures.

“Perspective” – Angela Detanico et Rafael Lain

Le CRP/ consacre une exposition personnelle au duo d’artistes Angela Detanico et Rafael Lain. Respectivement linguiste-sémiologue et graphiste de formation, les artistes mènent ensemble une réflexion sur l’utilisation des signes graphiques dans la société. Fascinés par ce qui dépasse l’homme et la compréhension du monde, Angela Detanico et Rafael Lain tirent d’une recherche scientifique, mathématique et littéraire des systèmes de représentation et d’écriture du temps, de l’espace et de l’infini. Au CRP/, ils proposeront un ensemble de nouvelles œuvres qui joueront avec les « perspectives » et les différents régimes de l’image.

La pratique d’Hélène Hulak apparaît comme un cri. Un cri de guerre, un cri de rage, un cri de joie aussi. Dans sa production foisonnante de peintures, collages, installations et performances, des couleurs criardes détourent des corps, des tâches informes creusent des yeux et des joues, des textiles flashy se meuvent en ongles et en dents. Des silhouettes sans consistance, issues de l’imagerie médiatique, flasques et parfaitement virtuelles, se préparent à contre-attaquer. Elles sortent les griffes, menaçant de déchirer les surfaces planes pour en jaillir en puissance. Leur regard, perçant, se retourne contre les regardeur·ses ; elles deviennent des gorgones qui renvoient à l’expéditeur l’image monstrueuse, en deux dimensions, que le patriarcat a forgé d’elles. En se jouant des codes d’une communication visuelle sexiste, Hélène Hulak rend, avec joie et un humour grinçant, leurs armes aux représentations féminines.

Vernissage le 10 septembre à partir de 14h

Les installations sensorielles immersives de Naomi Maury s’attachent à interconnecter des éléments de factures diverses. S’y mêlent matières organiques et plastiques, métaux et végétaux, éléments technologiques, sons, lumières, objets manufacturés et matériaux récupérés, le tout dans une esthétique de bricolage steampunk. L’artiste nous plonge dans un univers à la touche post-apocalyptique mais dans lequel la cohabitation et la complémentarité des composants ouvrent des perspectives heureuses. La fragilité et l’équilibre précaire y sont les facteurs essentiels d’une vie en constante mutation, soutenue par des prothèses à la fois archaïques et technologiques, tels des exo-squelettes temporaires. Naomi Maury ne met pas en scène un univers stérile, mais des réseaux complexes de prise en soin et des écosystèmes circulaires qui déjouent les dialectiques habituelles entre nature et culture, humain et machine. Ses installations convoquent la figure du cyborg, hybride de machine et d’organisme vivant, qui permet de dépasser les frontières rigides entre vivants et non-vivants, et milite pour une coexistence multi-espèces coopérative et non-discriminatoire.

Hélène Hulak’s practice appears like a cry. A war cry, a cry of rage, a cry of joy too. In her abundant production of paintings, collages, installations and performances, garish colors cut out bodies, aquarelle stains transform into eyes and cheeks, flashy textiles become nails and teeth. Silhouettes without consistency, from flabby and perfectly virtual media imagery, prepare themselves to counterattack. They bare their claws and threaten to tear the flat surfaces to burst out from them. Their piercing gaze turns against the viewers; they become gorgons which return to sender the monstrous, two-dimensional image that the patriarchy has forged of them. By playing with the codes of a sexist visual communication, Hélène Hulak hands back their weapons to the feminine representations with joy and a creaking humor.

This residency is developed in partnership with Nýló (Reyjkavík), the French Embassy of Iceland, the Alliance Française of Reykjavík and Artistes en Résidence (Clermont-Ferrand).

Opening the 10th September at 2pm.

Naomi Maury’s immersive sensory installations attempt to interconnect elements of various natures. Organic and plastic materials, metals and plants, technological elements, sounds, lights, manufactured objects and salvaged materials are mixed together in a DIY steampunk aesthetic. The artist plunges us into a universe with a post-apocalyptic touch but in which the cohabitation and complementarity of the components open up happy perspectives. Fragility and precarious balance are the essential factors of a constantly changing life, supported by both archaic and technological prostheses, functioning as temporary exoskeletons. Naomi Maury does not stage a sterile universe, but complex networks of care and circular ecosystems that thwart the usual dialectics between nature and culture, human and machine. Her installations summon the figure of the cyborg, a hybrid of machine and living organism, which makes it possible to overcome the rigid boundaries between the living and non-living, and militates for a cooperative and non-discriminatory multi-species coexistence.

Workshop: The Body as a Score

Op zaterdag 25 september vindt de eerste van een nieuwe serie Training the Senses-workshops plaats. In deze sessie duiken we in scores, ofwel partituren: hoe ontwikkel je een systeem om composities en choreografieën vast te leggen? In The Body as a Score ga je aan de slag met tekst, spraak en grafische elementen om scores te maken en gebruik je je lichaam en stem als instrument.

“Zij die onderdrukt zijn geweest, weten dat onafhankelijkheid niet gepaard gaat met vrijheid en zij die vrijheid missen, wordt ook liefde ontzegd,” aldus Khanyisile Mbongwa, curator van de volgende tentoonstelling History’s Footnote die op 2 oktober opent. Mbongwa werkt met openbare ruimte waarin ze complexe thema’s ontrafelt, zoals sociaal-politieke, economische, raciale en gender-queer onderwerpen.

Nieuwe wandeling: Maastricht Tracks

Op zondag 26 september lanceren Marres en kunstenaar David Helbich de nieuwe audiowandeling Maastricht Tracks: een reis langs een aantal bijzondere plekken midden in de stad. Ze bevinden zich op minder dan een steenworp afstand, maar zijn vaak onzichtbaar voor de meeste bezoekers. Maastricht Tracks bestaat uit een boek en elf geluidsfragmenten voor de oren, de ogen en de rest van het lichaam. Pre-order het boek en meld je aan voor de lancering:

Marres Extended is de jongerenafdeling van Marres, waarin een team vier maanden lang werkt aan een maatschappelijk kunstproject. In september start een nieuwe lichting en er is nog plek voor nieuwsgierige jongeren tussen de 14 en 21 jaar die samen aan de slag gaan met cultuur.

The Brussels Gallery Weekend is bringing an ambitious program for it’s 14th edition! 

From 9 to 12 September, galleries, institutions, artist run spaces,… will open their doors and welcome you. This fourteenth edition of the Gallery Weekend knows no limits: participants brought together high quality exhibitions, carefully curated walking trails, guided tours of different neighbourhoods, and a podcast for visitors to listen to as they move between galleries. This year features exhibitions in 46 galleries and 14 guest venues, alongside projects from two ex cathedra, as well as the “Generation Brussels” exhibition, which is celebrating its fourth edition this year by inviting a special curator-duo. One brand new feature of this year’s Gallery Weekend will allow visitors to listen to the voices of the gallery owners and artists while walking around. Different podcasts about the exhibitions will be available to download from our website or via a QR code which will be displayed at the entrances to the galleries. In a similar vein, the magazines Camera Austria and L’Oeil have put together “Curated Audio Tours” highlighting their selected commentaries. Another initiative at this year’s event enables visitors to focus on visiting galleries grouped by neighbourhood.

Bollansee performance GEOLOGY2021

In het verlengde van haar tentoonstelling GEOLOGY, presenteert Marie Julia Bollansée een nieuwe performance: RIVER. De kunstenaar aanziet rivieren als de aders van de aarde die het vitale water van de bron naar de zeeën voeren. Als deze aders vastlopen of breken, zijn mensenlevens in gevaar. Op het grasveld naast S.M.A.K. creëert Bollansée een nieuw landschap met de voor haar werk typerende “tarpaulin blue”-zeilen en een lange strook breiwerk. Zij nodigt de bezoekers uit het landschap te betreden en begeleidt hen bij het oversteken van de rivier.

De Vrienden v/h S.M.A.K tonen het werk van de Portugese kunstenaar Joana Escoval. Haar praktijk is zowel visueel als auditief in de vorm van sculpturen, collectieve wandelingen, installaties en drukwerk. Op 4 september 2021 om 10:00 opent de tentoonstelling, vanaf 14:00 zijn de kunstenaar en curator Nadia Bijl aanwezig.

De opening van de solotentoonstelling A Short History van Anna Boghiguian liep in oktober 2020 enkele weken vertraging op, waardoor er op dat moment geen artist talk kon plaatsvinden gezien zij al terug aan het werk was in haar thuisstad Caïro.

Op zondag 12 september 2021 krijgen wij een nieuwe kans en gaan we alsnog in gesprek met haar. Anna Boghiguian opent vandaag haar nieuwe tentoonstelling in het Museum für Gegenwartkunst Siegen in Duitsland. Nadien reist ze door naar Gent. Boghiguian zal haar tentoonstelling in S.M.A.K. en het nieuwe werk dat zij toen creëerde toelichten.

Samen met Jimena Chávez Delion en Mark Grootes werd Padilla geselecteerd als finalist van de Prijs van de Vrienden v/h S.M.A.K. 2020 – 2021. De prijsuitreiking van deze tweejaarlijkse competitie voor pas afgestudeerde kunstenaars vindt plaats op zondag 3 oktober 2021. Tot dan kan je nog de tentoonstelling met werk van de finalisten bekijken en je stem uitbrengen voor de publieksprijs.

U bent van harte welkom op de vernissage van DIFFERENCES op donderdag 9 september 2021 van 18:00 tot 23:00. De tentoonstelling wordt geopend door Brussels minister Sven Gatz.
DIFFERENCES is naar aanleiding van Brussels Gallery Weekend open op vrijdag 10, zaterdag 11 en zondag 12 september van 11:00 tot 19:00. Daarna is de tentoonstelling open van 16 september tot 3 oktober, van donderdag tot zondag, van 11:00 tot 18:00.

We are happy to invite you to the vernissage of DIFFERENCES on Thursday September 9, 2021 from 18:00 till 23:00. Brussels minister Sven Gatz will open the exhibition. 

DIFFERENCES is open on the occasion of Brussels Gallery Weekend on Friday 10, Saturday 11 en Sunday 12 September from 11:00 till 19:00. Afterwards, the exhibition will be open from September 16 till October 3, from Thursday till Sunday, from 11:00 till 18:00.
 

NL: De eerste editie van de reeks HISK-alumnitentoonstellingen draagt de naam DIFFERENCES. Simpel gezegd staat dit voor een aspect van de missie van het HISK. Jonge beeldende kunstenaars een context aanbieden waarin ze hun eigenheid verder kunnen ontwikkelen in confrontatie met allerlei soorten experten van de kunstwereld. Het HISK biedt een voorgezette hogeschoolvorming aan, maar ze is geen school in de zin dat ze schools zou zijn en regels zou voorschrijven. Ontregelen is eerder het educatieve principe dat aangewend wordt. Het HISK maakt ook geen school in de betekenis van een reeks kenmerken die een groep van kunstenaars delen en als vlag gebruiken om naar buiten te treden. Een HISK-alumnus zijn betekent dat men toegelaten werd door een deskundige jury met internationale allure en men twee jaar een proces doorlopen heeft. Het is geen verwijzing naar een soort kunst, naar één bepaalde opvatting van wat kunst zou moeten zijn, maar naar verschillende concepten omtrent wat kwaliteit kan genoemd worden. 

Niet simpel gezegd staat DIFFERENCES voor een begrip dat door Gilles Deleuze aan de filosofische gereedschapskist werd toegevoegd in zijn boek “Différence et répétition’ (1968). Het was een belangrijke bijdrage aan een nieuw soort denken dat wou breken met het klassieke zoeken naar essenties die niet meer veranderen en daardoor zekerheid verschaffen. Dit differentiedenken legt de nadruk op de verschillen wanneer het iets wil omschrijven. Het Latijnse ‘differre’, waarvan het Franse ‘différer’ is afgeleid, betekent naast ‘verschillen’ ook ‘uitstellen’, waardoor beklemtoond wordt dat de betekenissen nooit vast te leggen zijn. 

In de hedendaagse kunst is dat verschillend zijn de hoofdbetrachting, sinds de schoonheid als criterium verdween. De openheid van het kunstwerk, waar Umberto Eco het al over had, impliceert het steeds maar verschuiven van de betekenisproductie. Kenmerk van die kunst is een grote weerstand tegen alles wat scherpe vormen bot maakt. 

HISK-voorzitter Willem Elias treedt voor DIFFERENCES als curator op. Hij koos één kunstenaar per afstudeerjaar, dat zijn er vierentwintig. Niet de beste van de klas. Het HISK is immers een kwaliteitslabel. Wel telkens een bij wie het verschillend zijn in zijn relatie met de anderen hem relevant leek. Dus geen tentoonstelling rond een verzoenend eenheidsthema of -vormkenmerk. Wel de nadruk op dat wat het verschil uitmaakt.

EN: The first edition in the series of HISK alumni exhibitions is entitled DIFFERENCES. It stands, simply put, for a particular aspect of the mission of the HISK: to provide young visual artists with a context in which they can further develop their individuality, in confrontation with a variety of experts from the art world. The HISK offers advanced higher education, but it is not a school in the scholastic sense, nor is it prescriptive or bent on rules. On the contrary, de-regulation seems to be its educational principle of choice. Nor is the HISK a school in the sense that it stands for a set of characteristics shared by a group of artists and used as a denominator under which they present themselves. To be a HISK alumnus implies that one has been admitted by an expert jury of international standing and has completed a two-year process. It does not refer to any type of art, to one particular understanding of what art should be, but to a variety of concepts of what might be called quality. 

In a more elaborate sense, DIFFERENCES stands for a concept that was added to the philosophical toolkit by Gilles Deleuze in his book ‘Différence et répétition’ (1968). It was an important contribution to a new kind of thinking that wanted to break with the classical search for fundamentals that are unchanging and therefore function as certainties. Rather, this differential approach puts the emphasis on differences when it comes to describing something. The Latin word ‘differre’, from which the French ‘différer’ is derived, not only signifies ‘to differ’ but also ‘to postpone’, thus emphasising the fact that meanings can never be fixed. 

In contemporary art, being different has become the main objective since the disappearance of beauty as a criterion. The openness of the work of art, as suggested by Umberto Eco, implies a constant shifting of the production of meaning. A distinguishing feature of this type of art is a great resistance to anything that blunts the sharpness of forms. 

HISK Chairman Willem Elias is acting as curator for DIFFERENCES. He chose one artist per graduation year, twenty-four in total. Not the best in the class. After all, the HISK is a quality label. However, in each case, an artist for whom being different in his relationship with others seemed relevant. In this sense, not an exhibition centred on a conciliatory unifying theme or formal quality. But rather one that places the emphasis on what constitutes the difference.

Kunst als stok tussen de digitale spaken – Kunstenaars laten zien dat technologie niet neutraal is

Mijn achternaam draag ik met trots: Ibrahim is de voornaam van mijn overgrootopa, die mijn vader invulde toen hij in de jaren ’70 vanuit Egypte naar Nederland kwam. Mijn vader is helaas overleden, het was de meest warme en hartelijke man die je je kan inbeelden. Maar er is iets geks aan de hand met mijn achternaam: als een computer een taal leert met behulp van alledaagse teksten van internet, blijkt dat de computer niet-westerse namen zoals Ibrahim als minder ‘plezierig’ aanduidt dan westerse achternamen.

Meldrid Ibrahim schreef voor Mister Motley een stuk over de sociale impact van technologie, de ethiek die achter de wereld van data schuilgaat, én welke rol kunst daarin kan spelen.

‘Je schept ook om gezien te worden’ – Aukje Dekker over WERKTITEL: MENS

 

WERKTITEL: MENS is een fictief schetsboek met prototypes en schetsen van God, volgens maker Isa Grütter de eerste kunstenaar ter wereld. Een kunstenaar die de wereld had voltooid maar nog niet tevreden was en begon aan een laatste experiment: de mens. Kunstenaar (en studiogenoot) Aukje Dekker schreef er een verhaal over. ‘Zoals ik ploeter op dit stukje, ploeterde Isa op dit boek, ploeterde God op ons.’

De laatste pudding – atelierbezoek bij Arnout van Albada

Lieke van den Krommenacker bezocht het Groningse atelier van Arnout van Albada, de man die frambozentaartjes, Ibericohammen en gezouten boter schildert op paneel. En  puddingen. Toen ze hem bezocht, schilderde hij zijn allerlaatste.
“De vraag voelt even onnozel als essentieel: waarom puddingen? Tja. Waarom landschappen? Waarom dieren? Waarom mensen? Het antwoord is bedrieglijk eenvoudig. ‘Ik houd van eten’, zegt Van Albada. ‘Maar meestal heb ik wel iets meer binding met de smaak dan bij een pudding.’”
