August Interjection: Odie Spinelli ‘Friends and Comrades:’

Odie Spinelli is a non-binary working class multidisciplinary artist from Minneapolis, MN. Their work is rooted in their experience with addiction, mental health and illness, gender, sexuality, politics, and relationships. Known as @not.yr.boyfriend on Instagram, their colourful, introspective memes are meant to be a healing voice amongst a sea of depression memes and infighting. Aside from memes they produce other content such as writing, zines, jewelry, and have a rich history of performance art and curation in the Minneapolis queer scene at spaces like Madame and Patrick’s Cabaret.

September Interjection: Gabriella Davies ‘CISLESS’

 

Gabriella Davies is a 29 year old artist who has run away from being poor and marginalised in Stoke to live the artist’s dream of being poor and marginalised in London. Previously described as ‘a reasonable balance of swearing & insight’ and ‘chic & tacky all at the same time’, she’s a working-class trans woman from the midlands with an answer for everything. Known as the queen of one-liners, with a knack for killer titles, she plays to her strengths; taking class and gender and turning them on the world as her lens.

Gabi received her MA from Royal College of Art in 2019, and served as the institution’s first openly trans SU president. She is also a member of Babeworld, was selected as part of Bloomberg New Contemporaries 2020, completed a digital residency with Deptford X, and was shortlisted for the Institute of Contemporary Arts New Creatives programme.

NL – Welkom terug dit najaar in het Frans Masereel Centrum!
Op 3 oktober opent onze groepstentoonstelling 'The Story of M.B. as told by Jef Geys'. Twee historische prints uit onze collectie worden voor het eerst opnieuw samengebracht en gepresenteerd met nieuw en bestaand werk van acht internationale kunstenaars. 

We kijken verder ook uit naar verschillende lezingen en artist talks, onder meer met Melissa Gordon, Nora Turato (o.v.) en Filiep Tacq. Hou onze website in de gaten voor de exacte data! 

EN – Welcome back this autumn at the Frans Masereel Centrum!
Our group exhibition 'The Story of M.B. as told by Jef Geys' opens on October 3rd. Two historical prints from our collection will be reunited, as well as brought together with new (and existing) work by eight international artists.

NL – De groepstentoonstelling ‘The Story of M.B. as  told by Jef Geys’ is een uitnodiging om kennis te maken met twee bijzondere grafische werken die bijna vijftig jaar geleden gerealiseerd werden in het Frans Masereel Centrum en nu voor het eerst weer verenigd worden. 

De expo laat beide werken in dialoog treden met nieuw en bestaand werk van een intergenerationele groep hedendaagse kunstenaars en reflecteert zo niet enkel over het instabiele karakter van betekenissen of hybride vormen van auteurschap, maar ook over de maakbaarheid van verhalen, het fictionele karakter van een narratief en bij uitbreiding de ruimte die kunst biedt om alternatieve vormen van kennis te genereren. 

Van harte welkom op de vernissage op zondag 3 oktober!
Verwacht je aan een feestelijke opening met live muziek, wafels en streekbier. 

Om iedereen een veilig en aangenaam bezoek te garanderen, vragen we je om online een tijdsslot te reserveren. (Let op: beperkte beschikbaarheid!)

Vanaf 8 oktober t/m 28 november is de expo open van vrijdag tot zondag (13u-17u).
Reserveren is niet nodig. 

We kijken uit naar je komst! 

EN – The group exhibition 'The Story of M.B. as  told by Jef Geys’ is an invitation to become acquainted with two special graphic works that were realized almost fifty years ago in the Frans Masereel Centrum and are now reunited again for the very first time. 

The presentation allows both works to enter into a dialogue with new and existing work by an intergenerational group of contemporary artists and thus reflects not only on the unstable nature of meanings or hybrid forms of authorship, but also on the malleability of stories, the fictional character of a narrative. and by extension, the space that art offers to generate alternative forms of knowledge. 

Most welcome at the opening on Sunday 3 October!
Expect a festive event with live music, delicious waffles and regional beer.

In order to safely spread visitors throughout the vernissage, we ask you to book your time slot online.
(Note: limited availability!)

From 8 October until 28 November the exhibition is open from Friday til Sunday (1-5pm).
No need to rsvp.

Event – Post-Precarity Autumn Camp: How to survive as an artist?

October 1, 2021

From September 27th until October 1st, the Institute of Network Cultures, Hotel Maria Kapel, and Platform BK organize an autumn camp for young art workers. Fifteen recently graduated artists, designers and theater makers are invited to five days of conversations, workshops and communal activities. Each day, we will address one important theme of working and living in the Dutch cultural sector: from working in the gig economy and moneyflows in the cultural sector, to experiments with crypto, staying happy and healthy, and durable self-organisation. The results will be collected and distributed in a zine, to make sure that all (young) cultural workers can share in the developed insights.

‘Marie and Cavok’: An oak and a pine tree grown entwined in the grounds of the Dahlem Museum are declared a performance and henceforth part of the museum’s collection.

CMMC performs self-invented cognitive constructions, always with a latent sense of humour. Their intensity is translated in very long performances (up to twelve hours), that have evolved over the seven years of their existence from working on quickly alternating emotions, text recitation and lengthly synchronized movements, to more stylized conceptual responses to the invitations they receive. The pieces often bring about an almost trance-like state in the performers.
CMMC performed in galleries and at art fairs internationally in Hamburg (P/ART), Manchester (Manchester Contemporary, Performance Program), Rotterdam (Wo Meine Sonne Scheint) and in Antwerp (M HKA, Trampoline gallery), Leuven (Museum M, Ithaka), Ghent (Kunstencentrum Vooruit, KIOSK), and Brussels (Poppositions). CMMC joins ABA’s residency program from June – September 2021

Zeep van urine en het baardhaar van je geliefde

Soap portraits (met Christian Sleiman) 2020 Haar borsthaar, baardhaar, ondergoed, sokken, handdoeken, urine en zeep.

Sinds de uitbraak van het coronavirus is de wereld in een andere versnelling gekomen, sommige dingen escaleerden, andere zaken bleven juist steken. De afgelopen anderhalf jaar heeft een drastisch effect gehad op het werk en leven van de Turkse kunstenaar Nihat Karataşlı, waarin persoonlijke overwinningen en hinderlagen een direct gevolg waren van de corona-uitbraak in het Midden-Oosten. De pandemie scheidde hem van zijn geliefde, dwong hem tot afkicken in zijn ouderlijk huis en zorgde voor een onverwachte en confronterende wending in zijn praktijk.

Kunst is Lang : Fiona Tan
 

Fiona Tan, Ascent, 2016

De eerste Kunst is Lang uitzending van het seizoen werd afgelopen woensdag gepubliceerd. Het is een gesprek met kunstenaar Fiona Tan. Ze doet fotografische projecten, en maakt films en video-installaties. Haar werken bevinden zich vaak in een grijs gebied tussen bewegend en stilstaand beeld: zoals in de film ‘Ascent’, een portret van de legendarische Mount Fuji in Japan. Die is opgebouwd uit ruim 4000 foto’s, en schetst daarmee hoe de berg door vele verschillende ogen wordt gezien en onthouden.
Zo draait het werk van Tan steeds om beeldvorming en de rol van het beeld, het verstrijken van tijd en de manier waarop herinneringen en geschiedenissen worden gemaakt.

Note that Sablon and Regence will be open from 11am and avenue Louise from 1pm so there’s no excuse not to come and visit the galleries today!

Tom Callemin
Landscape Study, 2021

In his new works, artist Tom Callemin plays with the idea of ​​the photographic image as an illusory phenomenon. He uses an old special-effects technique while creating landscapes in a studio setting. Front Screen Projection is an analogue technique that has fallen into disuse but forms the basis for what we now call Green Key. For example, Callemin wanted to build traps in the snow, but for practical reasons it turned out to be more convenient to recreate the landscapes in the studio. The ‘lie’ of the image plays a role in the meaning of the work. Just like the photograph, the animal trap is also a visual illusion: the surface appears differently. With the research in this series, Callemin plays with the notion of abstraction. The white landscape functions as a white canvas on which a structure of lines and shapes can be made to create a perfect composition. In that sense, the work from the Traps series is very close to drawing and painting. Landscape Study, 2021, also leads to the ‘lie’. The coulisse-like landscape behind the female figure and the twist that light and shadow give to the image, form a beautiful ‘trap’ for the viewer.

Bertrand Cavalier
Untitled (Permanent Concern #1) 2021

Permanent Concern is a series of smartphone photographs made in the Netherlands. The work attests Cavalier’s obsession for urban spaces and their development under a rational thinking. Bricks, concrete and plastic sometimes constitute the physical materiality of the objects that he’s photographing. Using a maximum zoom and monochrome laser prints, Cavalier reveals their inherent structure and shows them activated by people or nature. By doing so, Cavalier highlights failure as a quality of urban planning that gives room for a subjective and personal use among the cities that we inhabit. 

Paul Kooiker
Untitled (AnOther Magazine), 2021

In recent years Paul Kooiker made a lot of work for fashion brands and magazines in addition to his autonomous work. He has collaborated with brands such as Rick Owens and Marni and published fashion series in a.o. Vogue, Dazed, AnOther Magazine, Vanity Fair, M le Monde, and New York Times Magazine. These fashion assignments offer Kooiker the space to experiment with new ideas for his work. 

For UNSEEN 2021 Paul Kooiker compiled a selection of images that he photographed for these fashion brands and magazines.  The images gain an extra layer of meaning now they are shown in the context of a gallery and an art fair.

Kunst Aan Zet with whom we collaborated presents at our Info Point an exhibition with an exciting selection of artworks that can be bought through the interest-free art loan will be shown. 

IRSA 
At the Info Point you will be able to discover a collaboration with blind residents of l’Aubier and Olivier Pestiaux brings a triptych of three drawings as well as an access to audio and a video. The project attempts to link the paradigm of rhythm in the exploration of new representations.

With the participation of Cécile, André, Daniel, Didier, Jean and Rudy.
With the accompaniment of Pascale Deneyer and Eric Heyters.

Loki ed Luma 
To discover at Lebeau Building, “The survival of the canine Selenians”. The argument of the work is to protect animals from abuse and abandonment, the dog is taken as a symbol here. The main character is the dog on the tank, the moon means that he is all alone away from the world.

Je hoeft geen kenner te zijn om van kunst te genieten. Tijdens het maandelijkse Meet the Masters-programma staat steeds één kunstenaar centraal. Die wordt bekeken door de ogen van andere makers uit de wereld van onder meer kunst, design, fashion, muziek, dans en film. Zij delen in uiteenlopende vormen hun fascinatie met ons. In deze eerste editie duiken we met o.a. Yuki Kho, Lakshmi, Navid Nuur, Simomo the Private Dancer en Bo Tarenskeen in het werk van Nauman. Stéphanie Rosianu

Residency: Sep 2021-Feb 2022

Stéphanie Rosianu uses words as a material to create and reflect on our society. She shares with others the idea that words are a tool of emancipation from our patriarcal society of control and segregation. Her projects can take different form as stage creations, visual installations, group readings, publications and radio broadcasts. One of her last project exhibited is titled Kiosque. An itinerant project, she started in 2017, to share poetic and political books that have in common a way of questioning our society and making us attentive to human and non-human relationships. All the texts in the kiosk are photocopied and bound by hand, and accessible free of charge. Kiosque aims to propagate knowledge outside the preconceived circuits and modalities.During her stay in Berlin she wants to write the third part of a stage creation which challanges the word « common » through its communist heritage.

CMMC performs self-invented cognitive constructions, always with a latent sense of humour. Their intensity is translated in very long performances (up to twelve hours), that have evolved over the seven years of their existence from working on quickly alternating emotions, text recitation and lengthly synchronized movements, to more stylized conceptual responses to the invitations they receive. The pieces often bring about an almost trance-like state in the performers.

CMMC performed in galleries and at art fairs internationally in Hamburg (P/ART), Manchester (Manchester Contemporary, Performance Program), Rotterdam (Wo Meine Sonne Scheint) and in Antwerp (M HKA, Trampoline gallery), Leuven (Museum M, Ithaka), Ghent (Kunstencentrum Vooruit, KIOSK), and Brussels (Poppositions). CMMC joins ABA’s residency program from June – September 2021

The Womxn Waves I-II-III

All the womxn’s bodies that crossed the rivers and canals of the city of Berlin are connected with each other. They were killed there, died, or only passed through these liquid spaces and together they grew into an original memory that connects distant pasts and potential futures. In this new narration a population has emerged from this violence and loss: the Womxn Waves.

Thank you all for coming to yesterday’s opening and making a success out of it. Today all the galleries and the Guest Venues will welcome you from 11am to 7pm. Don’t miss the daily events which are organised by our members and partners as well as our guided tours.  Finally, don’t miss this year edition of Generation Brussels curated by Dagmar Dirkx and Zeynep Kubat at Tour à Plomb and Lebeau Building.

GENERATION BRUSSELS 

For this year 2021, our exhibition Generation Brussels is curated by Dagmar Dirkx and Zeynep Kubat. They collaborated with the artists on a transdisciplinary exhibition, articulating different themes such as identity, gender, or our relationship to space and environment, under the gaze of a new generation of Brussels artists.

This year artists are : Karolien Chromiak, Clémentine Coupau, Thiaba Diop Egutchi, Günbike Erdemir, Eléonore Joulin, Axel Korban, Rebecca Quix, Estelle Saignes, Jean-Samuel N’Sengi, Ugo Woatzi.

Kunst Aan Zet with whom we collaborated presents at our Info Point an exhibition with an exciting selection of artworks that can be bought through the interest-free art loan will be shown. 

IRSA 
At the Info Point you will be able to discover a collaboration with blind residents of l’Aubier and Olivier Pestiaux brings a triptych of three drawings as well as an access to audio and a video. The project attempts to link the paradigm of rhythm in the exploration of new representations.

With the participation of Cécile, André, Daniel, Didier, Jean and Rudy.
With the accompaniment of Pascale Deneyer and Eric Heyters.

Loki ed Luma 
To discover at Lebeau Building, “The survival of the canine Selenians”. The argument of the work is to protect animals from abuse and abandonment, the dog is taken as a symbol here. The main character is the dog on the tank, the moon means that he is all alone away from the world.

At the start of the new cultural season, we’re happy to inform you about the whereabouts of several of our current and former residents.

As part of this year’s edition of Rewire Festival, iii – one of our partners in the Oscillations netwerk – was invited to curate Proximity Music, a tour of installations scattered across The Hague which engage with the senses and the body, with instruments and machines, with ritual and play.

Among many others, Proximity Music will host Incidence of Light, which was created by Mariska de Groot during her 2019 residency at Overtoon. Mariska de Groot uses optical sound as a medium to create immersive environments, where light and sound are one.

The fifth edition of Beyond Music takes you on a tour of STUK Studio and Labozaal for four sound performances on the intersection between image, body and spatiality. Het Blokfluitasiel is a collaboration between instrument builder Lukas De Clerck, composer Angélica Castello, and music teachers Katelijne Lanneau and Matthias Verniers with their pupils from Music Academies Jette/Brussels (recorder class) and St.Vith (organ class). The project builds on Lukas De Clerck’s instrument “AirBag/14Holes”.
The concert takes place at Sint-Agatha kerk/Eglise Sainte-Agathe, Kerkstraat/rue de l’Eglise, 1082 Sint-Agatha-Berchem / Berchem-Sainte-Agathe.
This project is a cooperation with Meakusma and the Muziekacademie Jette, and supported by the Ostbegische and the Vlaams Gemeenschap.

Francesca Hawker will present ‘a night on the Giselle’, a medley of songs, poems, and performative gestures. The nearby canal acted as a convenient conveyor-belt of material inspiration, carrying a slew of objects which were chosen intuitively by Francesca + friends on a series of canal-side walks. These works were developed alongside the a standup comedy ‘a night on the Allegro’.

For the first Second Sundays back after a lengthy hiatus, Dreier will work through her unreleased and archival cassette recordings from the band, re-performing and remixing them into her own solo-music and a slurry of other audio material. Meanwhile, a selection of rare Super 8 film from the archive of Die Tödliche Doris, Bremen will be projected.

STUK, Q-O2, Musica & C-TAKT launch an open call for their annual showcase of new sound art in Belgium. The call is directed at young and emerging artists, and is looking for existing work in which sound plays a central role. This can be a performance, an installation, soundwalk, radio piece, online project, workshop, intervention or anything else. Deadline for proposals: 10th october 2021.

L’exposition collective Glad to Take Height and See the Slow Motion World, à la galerie Jeune Création est ouvrira le dimanche 12 septembre de 14h à 19h ! 

« Glad to take height and see the slow motion world ». Ces paroles que j’emprunte, à deux mots près, au poète et musicien Gil Scott-Heron, je les détourne à mon usage pour qu’elles portent dans leur intensité poétique, tout le double sens qu’induit l’expression « prendre de la hauteur ». Au littéral, monter quelques marches et pouvoir apprécier par en haut le monde qui nous entoure ; au figuré, la formule s’emploie lorsque le besoin de prendre du recul sur une situation afin d’en saisir toute la mesure s’en fait sentir. Faire une pause donc, et changer de perspective, passer de l’horizontal au vertical, pour mieux constater ce qu’il se passe.

L’artiste Agnès Birgersson Widin s’empare de la Galerie du Couloir en cette rentrée 2021. Vous pourrez découvrir son installation à partir du dimanche 12 septembre de 14h à 19h. 

« En 2017, j’ai commencé à me prendre en photo toutes les fois où je ressentais de la tristesse ou du désarroi. Des photos prises en état de vulnérabilité. Il ne s’agissait pas de prendre une “jolie photo”. Mon visage apparaissait souvent légèrement gonflé, rouge et sans maquillage, rendant compte de sa naturalité. Il n’y avait pas d’intention particulière dans ma démarche, seulement un moment avec moi-même comme une sorte de rituel. Autoportraits après autoportraits j’embrassais ma tristesse et la peinture devenait ma thérapie. 
Ma peinture est tout à la fois medium d’introspection, révélant mes doutes, ma sensibilité, mes peurs, exutoire, m’offrant des moments d’euphorie lorsque je pose la couleur sur la toile. »

Le salon MAD ouvre ses portes pour sa 6e édition les 10, 11 et 12 septembre 2021 dans l’espace de La Chaufferie à la fondation Fiminco à Romainville. Dans le cadre du prix MAD remis lors du festival Jeune Création, Julia Gault présentera des multiples et sa nouvelle édition « Si l’on abat si l’on bâtit », qui retrace l’exposition en duo pensée avec Raphaël Maman « L’énigme est de ne pas savoir si l’on abat si l’on bâtit » qui s’est tenue en octobre et novembre 2019 à l’espace Le Mur, à Moret-sur-Loing.

À propos de l’exposition et de l’édition :
 
Dans cet ancien magasin de BTP, en plein coeur de la forêt de Fontainebleau, les deux artistes ont choisi de proposer un travail autour de la notion de chantier, lieu où les formes sont façonnées, où l’on construit les fondations avant l’ouvrage achevé. Le projet questionne la temporalité du chantier ainsi que l’état éphémère de la matière et mouvant des espaces. Les pièces présentées pendant les deux mois d’exposition avaient vocation à être modifiées, rejouées et mises en tension avec l’espace, articulée autour de trois actes quasi théâtraux.
 
Conçue par le graphiste et artiste Paul Dagorne, cette édition devient à son tour le théâtre où se déroulent les différents actes, où la temporalité, inhérente à leur projet, devient le fil conducteur, et où le lecteur peut, à son tour, déambuler entre les scènes.
 
Cet ouvrage, signé et numéroté, sera tiré à 100 exemplaires. Il sera composé de 96 pages imprimées en noir et blanc et en quadrichromie, au format 21 x 29,7 cm, et d’une couverture embossée aléatoirement. Ainsi chaque exemplaire sera unique.

BRUSSELS GALLERY WEEKEND KICKS OFF TODAY !

From TODAY to sunday, the Brussels Gallery Weekend presents its 14th edition with 46 participating galleries and 14 guest venues to mark the start of the art season. The Brussels Gallery Weekend, through its extensive programme highlighting the Belgian capital and the artistic diversity it contains, is keen to promote dialogue between artists, curators and gallery owners. 

This year, the Brussels Gallery Weekend is once again presenting its own exhibition: Generation Brussels. For this 4th edition, we decided to collaborate with two Belgian curators, Dagmar Dirkx and Zeynep Kubat, who worked with young artists not yet represented by galleries on a transdisciplinary exhibition, articulating different themes such as identity, gender, or our relationship to space and the environment, under the gaze of a new generation of Brussels artists.

The Brussels Gallery Weekend has also set up special guided tours through the various districts of Brussels. You can find more information about this programme on our website or below. In addition, daily newsletters will be sent out during the Brussels Gallery Weekend with the specific program for each day.

“Dissent Without Modification” (Bergen Kunsthall) written by Grace Ndiritu, is a research book composed of interviews with radical and progressive artists and thinkers, who started their education and careers in the 1990s. June Crespo is conducting research with a particular focus on the relationship between the body and its representation. (…) The starting point is a shape that can be traced back to the body, but the investigation leads in different directions, constructing forms that allude to other things as well (…) a sensual analysis of contemporary models of representation, commenting on the actual and symbolical dynamics enveloping the body. Crespo’s interest in the concrete and corporeal conditions of the object/body, as well as in the immaterial contexts where it circulates and shifts—as seen in her recurring interest in figures such as conductors and vessels—questioning contemporary life’s composite configuration made out of material and discursive dynamics. In a moment in which visual culture is dominated by stylized and hyper-perfect portraits, the work challenges homogenous approaches to the corporeal, proposing dissident images that liberate our gaze and our bodies themselves.*

As Crespo likes to work quite intuitively her approach for the project at P/////AKT has been decidedly open – just two molds and a mental baggage of older unexecuted ideas to experiment with. And as other materials (large blocks of Styrofoam, textiles, resin, flowers) have started to arrive at the space since her own arrival early August, things are still very much in progress. Or rather, in a process that is based on, and executed as, an investigation towards a state of transformation or in-betweenness. 

A space and an artist working inside it, molding and casting, fluids solidifying into objects with an outside and an inside, things that are hard and things that are stretchy, the body and the object, the subject and the object, the chicken and the egg. The answer to the question of what is leading can, for the time being, only be answered by trying to find the right tension and watching things transform into a state of ambiguity.

How would you define chaos?
I describe chaos as white noise. It’s the vagueness, the insecurity, that which is frightening and only half visible. This noise is never the same, it doesn’t have a purpose. It isn’t something that is predestined, like a clockwork always pointing at the same numbers. The noise is unavoidable, the noise is not perfect, pure or harmonious. The noise is scary, it pushes away from the universal construct. It’s the opposition without a foundation. Its foundation is permeable, self-destructive, self-renewing. The noise observes but only allows half to pass through. It resists both what is questionable and what we can rely on. The noise is the unrest – the tension between the conqueror and the conquered. It is the process towards breath without us having to feel it. It’s the dancing out of tune.
We are the engines of white noise as well as the ones who cannot see it. An uncertain contact. The way the noise affects us is similar to a blind spot.

Is there a relationship between chaos and horror?
A horror scene of course isn’t a horror scene if we already know when the monster jumps out. Fear is about what lies beyond our reach, we find it only when our certainties are taken from us, when our sense of purpose disappears and lose our grip. We avoid fear because we don’t want to become shapeless, to become chaos. Shapeless and in decay, unavoidable like a catastrophe.

How would you define chaos?
I often have the feeling that, from a human perspective, everything is naturally chaotic, disordered. This corresponds with how I work: I seldom know what I want to make, or why. I don’t think I’m interested in meaning, but I have a neurotic side in me that is and which can cause quite a bit of friction during the process of making. That’s why a feeling of trust during the process is very important to me. Chaos is natural, it’s there – trust and stillness are, too (sometimes I think we’ve collectively forgotten that). I have to intentionally and actively remind myself of that conscience, which I think is hard and not always easy to attain. But that’s okay. A feeling of trust, hope, lightness: I’d like to give that to the person who is seeing my work.

Is there a relationship between chaos and horror?
I think horror thrives in chaos. It constantly wants to remind you that you’re not in control. As a genre it’s defined by the curiosity for the unknown. Rational meaning is no longer relevant. I think that’s what attracted me to horror to begin with. For a few moments, the plot doesn’t seem significant compared to what the character must go through, so there’s this hyperfocus – which is sometimes even serene (probably because we’re the spectator) – on space and objects, body and breath. Mostly anxiety-driven, but still.

Overture

Two repaired; sanded; chalked perspex panels are reused from their original act as windows in a large greenhouse-like installation shown in Delft, referred to by the artist as Opera. Opera, in Italian means work, as a result of an activity by a farmer for example; counterintuitive to what we may think of when seeing/hearing the word. The “overture” of an opera is its opening gesture, seducing the audience to enter the work. 

Overture is an installation by Ricardo van Eyk specifically conceived for the space of our P/////AKTSALON. The work is on view in conjunction with the artist’s solo exhibition at 427 Gallery in Riga (more information below).

The P/////AKTSALON  is a club/reading room dedicated to publications, artist books, editions and small works by P/////AKT alumni artists (and beyond). These materials give form to P/////AKT library and collection. The room is also a space that hosts small book presentations in conjunctions with openings and events at P/////AKT.

Following the successful collaboration with 427 Gallery for the exhibition Artist Crisis Center II: Tact Gear by Ieva Kraule-Kūna & Elīna Vītola at P/////AKT in 2020, we are now proud to present a new solo exhibition by Ricardo van Eyk at 427 Gallery in Riga. 

Often large in scale, many of Ricardo van Eyk’s works resemble, at first glance, neglected or else partially restored surfaces familiar from the built environment: temporary panels put up around construction sites that have attracted crude graffiti, say, or else cracked walls that are halfway through the process of being re-plastered. Perhaps his practice is, at base, a meditation on time. Not only because his paintings hum with an awareness of the history of his medium, but because of their playful way with the language of entropy and repair. Patching something up – whether it’s a wall, or an entire cultural edifice – is not a done-in-one job, but an ongoing process. As van Eyk is aware, palimpsests are where we are fated to make our homes.

During a two-week working period at 427 in Riga, observations during walks in the Baltic city will inform a site-specific process in the exhibition space. As a guest to the city, Van Eyk’s fascinations for the public domain and its traces of the old and new as expressed in architecture, infrastructure and other visual identities will surely be met, resulting in a temporary interpretation.

Matching audio gear is where the individual personality comes to light. The quest for purity eventually crystallises one’s own vision of their world. It is also the threshold between pragmatic design and rational measurements and personal claims and beliefs. In the world of hi-fi, the practice of tweaking and the careful placement of certain objects in a room could appear as obscure rituals. It is not uncommon to see stones of different sorts placed on the components of a system. Or tweaks, like room neutralizers, to make the air more compliant for frequencies to travel at the same speed. Sometimes, you would also come across room harmonizers named black diamonds, blue suns or black stones. Harmony comes at a high price. The role of matchmakers is less to consider individual needs and desires, but more about minimising the trouble, reducing the noise and silencing gossips. The future joining parties give away their voice for the broader family to strive socially and economically. With portable high-end audio, IEMs became the equivalent of the loudspeakers in a stationary system with the exception that the room and its average-to-bad acoustics are suppressed. What is sold to the portable high-end enthusiast is the power to silence by isolating themselves from the surrounding noise to the rhythm of their moods and tastes.

The first edition in the series of HISK alumni exhibitions is entitled DIFFERENCES. It stands, simply put, for a particular aspect of the mission of the HISK: to provide young visual artists with a context in which they can further develop their individuality, in confrontation with a variety of experts from the art world. The HISK offers advanced higher education, but it is not a school in the scholastic sense, nor is it prescriptive or bent on rules. On the contrary, de-regulation seems to be its educational principle of choice. Nor is the HISK a school in the sense that it stands for a set of characteristics shared by a group of artists and used as a denominator under which they present themselves. To be a HISK alumnus implies that one has been admitted by an expert jury of international standing and has completed a two-year process. It does not refer to any type of art, to one particular understanding of what art should be, but to a variety of concepts of what might be called quality. 
HISK Chairman Willem Elias is acting as curator for DIFFERENCES. He chose one artist per graduation year, twenty-four in total. Not the best in the class. After all, the HISK is a quality label. However, in each case, an artist for whom being different in his relationship with others seemed relevant. In this sense, not an exhibition centred on a conciliatory unifying theme or formal quality. But rather one that places the emphasis on what constitutes the difference.

GENERATION BRUSSELS

Generation Brussels brings together a range of artists living and working in Brussels, whether they’re art school students, recent graduates, up and coming artists, or those with a bit more experience.
