Kymani Ceder

We are proud to present The Crown,
by the young talented film-maker Kymani Ceder at LOOP 2021. Kymani Ceder made The Crown in collaboration with Robin Ramos in 2019. What started as a project about ‘natural black hair’ has grown into a poetic ode to Afro-Dutch people who are proud of their frizzy hair and their roots. The film is a re-enactment of a historical narrative played by Afro-Dutch people of today and mixes traditional African images and clichés in a paradoxical but above all liberating way with recordings of contemporary Dutch people with African roots. In this de-colonial time machine Ceder takes you on a journey through the legacy of a special hair tradition and she intertwines past and present. About 80 people contributed to this short film, including several well-known Dutch people such as Veronica van Hoogdalem, Digitzz, Sylvana Simons, Clarice Gargard and Guillermo Babel.

Rhapsodie des oubliés

« Ma rue raconte l’histoire du monde avec une odeur de poubelles. Elle s’appelle rue Léon, un nom de bon Français avec que des métèques et des visages bruns dedans. »

Rhapsodie des oubliés raconte l’histoire d’Abad, treize ans, qui vit dans le quartier de Barbès, la Goutte d’Or, Paris XVIIIe. C’est l’âge des possibles : la sève coule, le cœur est plein de ronces, les sentiments et le sexe torturent la tête. Pour arracher ses désirs au destin qu’on lui réserve, Abad brise les règles. À la façon d’un Antoine Doinel, qui veut réaliser ses 400 coups à lui.

Dans une langue explosive et universelle, influencée par le roman noir, la littérature naturaliste, le hip-hop et la soul music, Sofia Aouine nous conte une radioscopie sans concession mais avec tendresse, d’une génération, d’un quartier et l’odyssée de ses habitant·e·s.

Sofia Aouine est née en 1978, elle a travaillé en tant que reporter radio et documentariste pour France Culture, RFI et France Inter. Rhapsodie des oubliés est son premier roman.

The title for this exhibition, programmed by David Dale Gallery as part of an organisational exchange with P/////AKT, is taken from the opening words of Lauren Berlant’s introduction in a special edition of Critical Inquiry from 1998 entitled ‘Intimacy: A Special Issue’. This focus on intimacy as well as desire, togetherness, presence and absence opens reading into the mechanics of each moving image work but also provides a political underpinning to the programme as a whole. To exist as a limited group of objects bundled together, to act as a subjective survey of sorts, a round-up of activity by artists making moving image work in Glasgow in 2021, is an intimate affair.
 
Harriet Rose Morley’s designs for chairs and tables constructed in collaboration with Bo Wielders, make this viewing space both active and communal. Built in response to the screening programme and with consideration to the differing lengths of the moving image works, the furniture speaks to Morley’s concerns around accessibility, care, and challenging dominant methodologies – her maxim to be ‘always under construction’.

There will also be a publication available at P/////AKT and online featuring writing by Aman Sandhu, Mathew Wayne Parkin and Margaret Salmon, and designed by Phoebe Kerr.

I didn’t think it would turn out this way has been programmed by Caitlin Merrett King, Programme Coordinator at David Dale Gallery, Glasgow, as the first part in an organisational exchange with P/////AKT, Amsterdam who will present an exhibition at David Dale Gallery in early 2022.

Intrigued by the time-based element of video, Tessa Langeveld creates moments that slowly unfold as a fragmentary narrative – the act of making is not in the choice of the subject, but in the choice of the meaningful moment. Langeveld graduated from AKI (Enschede) in 2020.

Like clock is a work made up of multiple borrowed and familiar aspects, assembled on its own terms. The essential premise would seem to be about staging a gathering-together in a place that appears to have its own rules.

Commissioned by David Dale Gallery, selected for and supported by Glasgow International 2021 Across the City. Supported by Mondriaan Fund, Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Creative Scotland.

The P/////AKTSALON  is a club/reading room dedicated to publications, artist books, editions and small works by P/////AKT alumni artists (and beyond). Maya Watanabe at IDFA

We are happy to announce the screening of Bullet by Maya Watanabe at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). 
Bullet is part of the selection for the non-competitive Paradocs program: the tightest selection seen in years, eight films that push the limits of the documentary form, showcasing some of the year’s best experimental documentary art. 

The surface of the skull is smooth as marble, except for the fractures surrounding the small, round bullet hole. The camera penetrates this opening, revealing the rock-like landscape within, of deep ravines, jagged-edged craters, and bony reefs. Here and there we see a web hanging, inhabited by a spider. The gurgling and whooshing of the tapestry of sound intensifies the ominous atmosphere.

Sticky Flames est une exposition collective d’œuvres de cinq jeunes diplômé·e·s de trois écoles d’art de la Grande Région et de Bruxelles – Alexandre Caretti et Ksenia Khmelnitskaya (HEAR, Strasbourg, FR), Darja Linder et Jonathan Maus (HBKSaar, Sarrebruck, DE) et Bruno Oliveira (ENSAV La Cambre, Bruxelles, BE) – réalisée en collaboration avec Mnemozine, une jeune association philosophico-artistique (www.mnemozine.lu).

Le thème général englobe les questions relatives au corps et à l’affect en tant que concepts épistémologiques, socio-théoriques, intrapersonnels et esthétiques. 

Le corps comme support direct est un moyen exécutif et un producteur d’ordres sociaux. Les forces affectives et leurs formes d’expression corporelle se situent dans une relation de tension entre l’histoire et le présent, les sphères publiques, les contextes sociaux et l’individu. Dans leurs zones de friction, des espaces transformateurs de réflexion et d’action s’ouvrent dans les mondes réels et virtuels (par exemple dans la socialité, les médias et les médias sociaux), dans lesquels les relations existantes, les systèmes d’ordre et les schémas de pensée sont remis en question, mais aussi les contextes sociaux révélés.

Le titre de l’exposition fait référence au phénomène viral des « flame wars » (guerres de flammes) qui se produisent lorsque de nombreux utilisateur·rice·s s’engagent sur des plateformes en ligne et entretiennent une discussion animée sur un message original avec des réponses provocantes ou tentent de désamorcer les flammes.

Lucile Desamory, A l’ombre de l’hyperboloïde (2004)

Lucile Desamory creates with her films a personal and often emotional world from the elements she gleaned in cinema and pop culture and in her own universe of imagination and dreams. In A l’ombre de l’hyperboloïde, she has woven self-produced pieces of film and animation into an associative wickerwork, evoking childlike sensations of astonishment and dismay. The result is a world of reaching tentacles, hovering eyes and dancing organs, surrealist and impervious. 
Every month,  highlights one particular work from the collection. It can be viewed online and on site as it is shown on a window display at Koopliedenstraat 62 Rue des Commerçants (next to the rile* entrance).

In 2020, ???????????????????? sent out an open call to Brussels-based artists, seeking to support atypical audiovisual works that might otherwise be difficult or impossible to realise. Aay Liparoto was one of the recipients. 

Small Acts of Violence is a surreal cinematic 360° experience in performative installation around the entanglement of love and non consensual physical violence in primary relationships. You are lovingly navigated throughout the experience by the Guide as you are placed in a complex web of a fictional family. This experience challenges you to actively engage your boundaries. Creating a safe environment to provoke embodied reactions, triggering your sense of self and body autonomy.

Les films de Lucile Desamory créent un monde imaginaire personnel et souvent émotionnel, en partant d’éléments du cinéma et de la culture pop, et plus particulièrement de son propre univers de rêves et d’imagination.

Dans À l’ombre de l’hyperboloïde, par exemple, elle a entremêlé des éléments de films et d’animations autoproduits en un tissage associatif évoquant des sensations enfantines d’étonnement et de désarroi. Le résultat est un univers de tentacules tendues, d’yeux flottants et d’organes dansants, surréaliste et impénétrable.
Tous les mois, vous permet d’accéder gratuitement aux œuvres anciennes et nouvelles de la collection sur votre ordinateur personnel, tabelette ou smartphone. L’oeuvre sélectionnée est également présentée dans une vitrine au 62 rue des Commerçants.

En 2020, ???????????????????? a lancé un appel à projets à Bruxelles, cherchant à soutenir des œuvres audiovisuelles locales et atypiques qui seraient difficiles ou impossibles à réaliser autrement. L’artiste Aay Liparoto a pu en bénéficier pour son projet d’installation en réalité virtuelle.  

Small Acts of Violence est une expérience cinématique surréelle à 360°, une installation performative autour de l’enchevêtrement de l’amour et de la violence physique non consensuelle dans les relations primaires. Le Guide vous accompagne avec amour tout au long de l’expérience au cours de laquelle vous vous retrouvez dans la toile complexe d’une famille fictive. Cette expérience vous met au défi d’engager activement vos limites. Elle crée un environnement sécurisant pour provoquer des réactions innées, déclencher votre prise de conscience de vous-même et votre autonomie corporelle.

Lucile Desamory, A l’ombre de l’hyperboloïde (2004)

De films van Lucile Desamory creëren een persoonlijke, vaak emotionele wereld op basis van elementen die zij sprokkelt in films en popcultuur en vooral in haar eigen universum van dromen en verbeelding. 

In À l’ombre de l’hyperboloïde heeft ze bijvoorbeeld zelfgeproduceerde stukjes film en animatie verweven tot een associatief vlechtwerk dat kinderlijke sensaties van verbazing en ontzetting oproept. Het resultaat is een wereld van uitstrekkende tentakels, zwevende ogen en dansende organen, surrealistisch en ondoordringbaar. 
Elke maand brengt oude en nieuwe werken uit de ARGOS collectie naar uw pc, tablet of smartphone. Het gekozen werk wordt ook gratis beschikbaar gemaakt in de vitrine van de Koopliedenstraat 62.

In 2020 organiseerde ???????????????????? een projectoproep bij Brusselse filmmakers, met als doel atypische audiovisuele werken te steunen die anders moeilijk of onmogelijk te financieren zijn. Zo kreeg Aay Liparoto productiesteun voor Small acts of violence. 

Small acts of violence is een surreële filmische 360-gradenervaring in een performance-installatie rond de verstrengeling van liefde en non-consensueel fysiek geweld in primaire relaties. De Gids navigeert je liefdevol door deze ervaring, waarbij je in het complexe web van een fictieve familie geplaatst wordt en uitgedaagd wordt om actief je grenzen te verleggen. In deze veilige omgeving worden je zelfbewustzijn en lichaamsautonomie getriggerd.

Het nieuwe nummer van The Remote Archivist is uit! Schrijf je in en krijg bijzondere toegang tot de materialen van het archief van de Appel, vanuit je eigen huis. Of misschien is dit wel het begin van je eigen collectie?

Martha Jager’s serie voor The Remote Archivist betrekt zich tot de onderwerpen van vriendschappen van vrouwen, persoonlijke geschiedenissen en de geschreven brief en neemt de vorm aan van een correspondentie tussen choreograaf en filmmaker Pooh Kaye en haarzelf. Dit geschreven dialoog kwam tot stand na een reactie van Jager op een brief van Kaye uit 1981 die zij in het archief vond.

Door de verweving van de persoonlijke correspondentie tussen Kaye en Jager met archiefmateriaal zoals ansichtkaarten en uittreksels uit brieven, presenteert dit tweede nummer van serie 02 het alledaagse van artistieke praktijken; daar waar het professionele en het persoonlijke elkaar ontmoeten.

Curatorial programme

De Appel verwelkomt Edwin Nasr terug als Curatorial Programme Fellow 2021-2022. Edwin Nasr [hen/hun] is een schrijver en curator uit Beiroet, Libanon. Hun aandacht en zorg gaat uit naar “het maken van leesbare ruimtes van vastlegging en extractie binnen materiële en visuele cultuur.” Van 2018-2021 was Nasr assistent-directeur bij Ashkal Alwan, waar hen deelnam aan de curatoriële ontwikkeling van programma’s, publicaties en tentoonstellingen. Bij de Appel heeft Nasr ALI R U OK? gerealiseerd als onderdeel van de tentoonstelling Formation Camp, het eindresultaat van het Curatorial Programme 2020-2021. Hun aanstaande en recente essays zijn te vinden in Afterall Journal, n+1, Bidoun, The White Review en The Funambulist Magazine.

Educatie

Twee storytelling projecten beginnen vorm aan te nemen: Op het Comenius Lyceum werkt onze curator van educatie David Smeulders samen met Fouad Lakbir, storyteller en mede-oprichter van MAQAM in Amsterdam West, om leerlingen de instrumenten aan te reiken waarmee ze hun verhalen over belonging kunnen vormgeven. Ook werkt Smeulders samen met tv- en radiomaker Jaleesa Clows (de star-MC van The Next Episode afgelopen zomer, uitgezonden door RadioSALTO) aan een nieuwe krant de West Side Tori’s die volledig is gemaakt door leerlingen van de Huibersschool. De programmering volgt, dus hou onze updates in de gaten…

Nieuwe publicatie
