Dear ₐᵣᶢᴼˢ-reader,

Like many of our beloved colleagues across artistic fields in Belgium, ⒜⒭⒢⒪⒮ is in the midst of  preparing the dossier for structural funding by the Flemish government (fingers crossed!). This means that while we’re mostly busy with writing in seclusion, we remain eager to present to you our next series of projects.

Italian collective Flatform’s History of a tree is a beautiful, meticulously composed film consisting of one, seemingly continuous, drone-made take. Its main protagonist is a 900 year old tree, an immovable, vital and perennial part of a vast, constantly changing landscape. This rooted protagonist forms the starting point for a profound reflection on a turbulent regional history that gradually becomes a poetic meditation on portraiture and everyday life.
 

 
Alongside Flatform’s evocative film-installation, we’re equally excited to present the second part of Minutenfilme, our year-long, rotating series of exhibitions by Alexander Kluge. For this second iteration of the project, the eminent German director has hand-picked a new selection of short, hybrid films that touch upon a plethora of subjects, ranging from deep universal sleep to the imagined filmic meeting of two galaxies to cosmic music.

Please join us on Thursday 18 November, 18:00–21:00, for the opening of these two exhibitions! Flatform’s Roberto and Annamaria will be present to raise a drink on this festive occasion. 

 

 
On Sunday 21 November we will be hosting Kunstendag voor Kinderen (arts day for children) and providing free entrance to all: kids, their parents, adults, and non-parents. Leaving behind restrictive understandings of concepts such as family, we’ve decided to interpret this day for children as freely and as inclusively as possible and invite anyone to visit and share this wonderfully open and playful initiative with the extended ???????????????????? family. You’re welcome to embrace your inner child, and to bring your babysitter, grandma, godchild, or any other companion to a̷r̷g̷o̷s̷. 

Speaking of the ⓐⓡⓖⓞⓢ family, we’re honoured to welcome two new members to our team: Katia Rossini and Jonas Beerts. Jonas, a recent graduate of the photography (visual arts) department at KASK and a long-time ???????????????????? collaborator, is currently assisting the production of Aay Liparato’s Small Acts of Violence, a project that was the main recipient of last year’s คгﻮ๏รs open call for production. Welcome, Jonas!

Katia has just started as our new head of collections and brings to äṛġöṡ a multitude of exciting professional skills and experiences and a unique knowledge of European alternative film and media cultures. Among other things, Katia was a founding member of Cinema Nova and recently finished her masters in film preservation at University of Amsterdam. Welcome, Katia, we look forward to building a new vision for the soƃɹɐ archive with you!
 
 

We’re also very happy to announce a new round of festival selections. The 8th edition of ARKIPEL, the Jakarta International Documentary & Experimental Film Festival, will show three films from our distribution catalogue: Between Relating and Use (Nazli Dinçel, 2018), Ojo Guarena (Edurne Rubio, 2018) and Ink in Milk (Gernot Wieland, 2018). The new film by Swiss duo Maria Iorio and Raphaël Cuomo, Chronicles of that time, will be screened at the Pravo Ljudski Film Festival in Sarajevo after an already successful run on the festivalcircuit. Lastly, the ᴬᵣᴳօ????’ catalogue will also be represented at the video art festival OVNI in Nice, where WHERE WAS I NOW? by Ken Kobland, alongside all other selections, will be presented in hotel rooms.

In other news, it is with much sadness that we learned about the passing of the great Belgian video art pioneer Jacques Lizène last month. To many here at ????????????????????, Lizène’s uncompromising artistic vision and idiosyncratic sense of humour was a constant source of joy and inspiration. We’ve put together a petit hommage on our website as we wanted to share his singular attitude and tentative smile with you. Rest in peace, Jacques Lizène!

Lastly, make sure to visit us during the last four weeks of our Hamza Halloubi, Oussama Tabti, and Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide) exhibitions, and do check out this month’s with Lucile Desamory as well.

Comme beaucoup de nos chers collègues actifs dans le domaine artistique et culturel en Belgique, ⒜⒭⒢⒪⒮ est en train de préparer son dossier de financement structurel auprès du gouvernement flamand (on croise les doigts!). Malgré le fait que nous soyons donc principalement occupés à écrire, nous n’en demeurons pas moins très impatients de vous présenter notre prochaine série de projets.

History of a tree, du collectif italien Flatform, est un film magnifique et méticuleusement composé, constitué d’un seul plan, apparemment ininterrompu. Son principal protagoniste est un arbre de 900 ans, une part immobile, vitale et pérenne d’un vaste paysage en constante évolution. Ce personnage enraciné constitue le point de départ d’une réflexion profonde sur une histoire régionale mouvementée qui se transforme progressivement en une réflexion poétique sur le portrait et la vie quotidienne.

Parallèlement à l’installation cinématographique de Flatform, nous sommes également ravis de présenter la deuxième partie de Minutenfilme, notre série d’expositions d’Alexander Kluge s’étendant sur toute l’année. Pour cette deuxième partie du projet, le réalisateur allemand a choisi une nouvelle sélection de courts métrages hybrides qui abordent une multitude de sujets, allant du profond sommeil universel à la rencontre cinématographique imaginaire de deux galaxies, en passant par la musique cosmique.

Rejoignez-nous le jeudi 18 novembre, de 18h00 à 21h00, pour le vernissage de ces deux expositions ! Roberto et Annamaria de Flatform seront présents pour trinquer lors de cette occasion festive.

 
Le dimanche 21 novembre, nous participerons à la Kunstendag voor Kinderen (journée des arts pour les enfants) et l’entrée sera gratuite pour tous : enfants, parents, adultes et non-parents. Abandonnant les définitions restrictives de concepts tels que la famille, nous avons décidé d’interpréter cette journée des enfants de la manière la plus libre et la plus inclusive possible. En conviant tout le monde à nous rendre visite, à partager cette initiative merveilleusement ouverte et ludique avec la grande famille d’a̷r̷g̷o̷s̷. Soignez votre âme d’enfant  et/ou emmenez votre baby-sitter, votre grand-mère, votre filleul … ! 

En parlant de la famille ⓐⓡⓖⓞⓢ, nous avons l’honneur d’accueillir deux nouveaux membres dans notre équipe : Katia Rossini et Jonas Beerts. Katia vient de prendre son poste de responsable des collections et apporte à äṛġöṡ une multitude de compétences et d’expériences professionnelles passionnantes, ainsi qu’une connaissance unique des cultures alternatives du cinéma et des médias en Europe. Entre autres, Katia a été une des membres fondatrices du Cinéma Nova et a récemment terminé son master en conservation des films à l’Université d’Amsterdam. Bienvenue, Katia, nous sommes impatients de construire une nouvelle vision des archives soƃɹɐ avec toi !
 
 
Nous sommes également très heureux d’annoncer une nouvelle série de sélections aux festivals. Autre nouvelle, c’est avec une grande tristesse que nous avons appris le mois dernier le décès du grand pionnier belge de l’art vidéo Jacques Lizène. La vision artistique sans réserves ni concessions de Lizène et son sens de l’humour idiosyncratique étaient une source constante de joie et d’inspiration. Nous avons mis en place un petit hommage sur notre site web pour partager avec vous son attitude singulière et sa ‘tentative de sourire’. Repose en paix, Jacques Lizène !

Zoals vele geliefde collega’s in de artistieke en culturele sector in België, is ⒜⒭⒢⒪⒮ volop bezig met de voorbereidingen van het subsidiedossier voor een structurele financiering (fingers crossed!). We hebben ons wat afgezonderd om te schrijven maar we nemen heel graag de tijd om jullie onze plannen voor de komende weken voor te leggen.

History of a tree van het Italiaanse kunstenaarscollectief Flatform is een prachtige, zorgvuldig gecomponeerde film die bestaat uit één schijnbaar ononderbroken opname. De centrale protagonist is een 900 jaar oude boom, een vitaal, permanent en onwrikbaar onderdeel van een landschap dat voortdurend in beweging is. De monumentale boom vormt het uitgangspunt voor een diepgaande reflectie over een turbulente regionale geschiedenis die geleidelijk overgaat in een poëtische bespiegeling over portretkunst en het dagelijks leven.
 

We zijn ook erg enthousiast over het tweede deel van Minutenfilme. Gedurende een jaar presenteert deze tentoonstelling vijf opéénvolgende programma’s met elk acht films van de toonaangevende Duitse filmmaker Alexander Kluge. Voor deze tweede reeks koos de filmmaker hybride kortfilms die, van een diepe universele slaap over de fictieve ontmoeting tussen twee melkwegstelsels tot kosmische muziek, vele verschillende thema’s aansnijden.

Vergezel ons op donderdag 18 november, van 18:00 tot 21:00 voor de vernissage van deze twee tentoonstellingen. Roberto en Annamaria van Flatform zullen aanwezig zijn om tijdens deze feestelijke opening samen een glaasje te heffen. 

 
Op zondag 21 november nemen we deel aan Kunstendag voor Kinderen en dan is de toegang gratis voor iedereen: kinderen, ouders, volwassenen en niet-ouders. We hebben besloten om deze dag zo vrij en inclusief mogelijk op te vatten en nodigen bijgevolg iedereen uit voor dit open en speelse initiatief de dag door te brengen met de uitgebreide a̷r̷g̷o̷s̷-familie. Laat het kind in je vrij of breng je favoriete oppas, oma, petekind of een andere metgezel mee! 

Over ⓐⓡⓖⓞⓢ-familie gesproken: we zijn heel blij en erg vereerd dat we twee nieuwe teamleden mogen verwelkomen: Katia Rossini en Jonas Beerts. Jonas, onlangs afgestudeerd aan de fotografieafdeling (visuals arts) van het KASK en al lange tijd ????????????????????-medewerker, assisteert momenteel Aay Liparato’s productie Small Acts of Violence, een project dat vorig jaar productiesteun kreeg via de คгﻮ๏รs open call. Welkom, Jonas!

Katia werd recent onze nieuwe collectieverantwoordelijke. Ze brengt een brede waaier aan professionele vaardigheden en boeiende ervaringen naar äṛġöṡ en ze heeft een unieke kennis van alternatieve film- en mediaculturen in Europa. Katia hielp onder meer Cinema Nova mee oprichten en voltooide onlangs haar master in filmconservering aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Welkom, Katia, we kijken ernaar uit om samen met jou een nieuwe visie voor het soƃɹɐ-archief uit te bouwen!

 

Er is alweer een nieuwe reeks festivalselecties aan te kondigen. De nieuwe film van het Zwitserse duo Maria Iorio en Raphaël Cuomo, Chronicles of that time, wordt vertoond op het Pravo Ljudski Film Festival in Sarajevo. Ten slotte wordt de ᴬᵣᴳօ???? ook vertegenwoordigd op het videokunstenfestival OVNI in Nice, waar WHERE WAS I NOW? van Ken Kobland in een hotelkamer getoond wordt. 

Vorige maand vernamen we met grote droefheid het overlijden van de grote Belgische pionier in videokunst, Jacques Lizène. Voor velen was Lizène’s compromisloze artistieke visie en eigenzinnig gevoel voor humor een constante bron van vreugde en inspiratie. Op onze website hebben we een petit hommage samengesteld in een poging zijn eigenzinnige attitude en zijn ‘tentative de sourire’ met jullie te delen. Rust in vrede, Jacques Lizène!

Vergeet ons tot slot niet te bezoeken tijdens de laatste vier weken van onze Hamza Halloubi, Oussama Tabti en Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide) tentoonstellingen, en kijk ook eens naar de   van deze maand met het werk van Lucile Desamory.
