The exhibition ‘Various Positions’, whose title is borrowed from Leonard Cohen’s homonymous album, brings together the artistic practices of the second-year candidate laureates at HISK. The red thread to their work is that they each create their own universe in an idiosyncratic manner. Hence, instead of imposing a far-fetched theme that tries to unite eleven totally different practices, each candidate is given the opportunity to express their artistic position to the full. While some adhere to a classic studio practice, others engage with the outside world. This to-and-fro movement from studio to the outside world can be correlated to two different ways of defining the self: one is the belief that the true self is hidden deep within each person. This is the so-called vertical, romantic worldview, whose philosophy of authenticity reveals a strong Platonic and Christian dimension. Conversely, according to the horizontal worldview, the self is not fixed, but in flux, constantly developing through interactions and encounters with others. This postmodernist viewpoint is suspicious of the idea of a fixed self.

Should one apply these concepts to the residency at the HISK, it would be clear that here, the vertical worldview is best reflected in the romantic vision of the studio where artists can explore their true, inner self, focusing on the production of their work in solitary confinement.
The horizontal worldview could be linked to the many encounters experienced by the candidate laureates during their residency: conversations with fellow artists dropping by, invited guest lecturers providing feedback, and exchanges with the general public during the Open Studios and the Laureates Exhibition.

Shifting from the vertical to the horizontal worldview, the artists’ practices range from painterly, sculptural, photographic, or cinematographic quests to different ways of engaging with social or economic structures within our society. The artists all approach their subjects in distinctive ways; through the investigation of family histories—in a dreamlike installation evoking long-gone memories or through research as what lies behind stories of exile—or the exploration, for example, of Belgium’s linguistic situation, the country’s economic interests in its former colony, or through poetic reflections on our global economy. Although each artist occupies their own distinct position—both within the institute and inside their clearly defined zone in the exhibition—the scenography suggests diverse perspectives and vantage points, creating a network of links between each individual “island”, combining the vertical worldview of the true self in the studio with the horizontal worldview reflecting the encounter with others.

Navette de l’art – Watch This Space 11 | Samedi 12 Février

Exposition Grande Ourse d’Alice Lotho

the space behind your studio
the place behind my flat

a walk between neja tomšič and alice wilson

“beyond my back fence is a communal garden, we have a gate that opens onto it, it is able to be accessed by over 60 flats. i think on average one person a week goes in there, very occasionally on a sunny day a group will sit at the bench. the space is occupied by a gang of stray cats, the extended family of a neighbour’s long haired ginger cat, they’re hostile and fight a lot. it could be a nice space, it probably is a nice space, when i go in there, i feel all the eyes of the surrounding flats and i worry about treading in cat shit. i would really like to connect with this space, i stare at it beyond my garden fence for at least 20 minutes every morning, watching for squirrels. i don’t want to go there. i prefer it as somewhere i look. i’ve been thinking about the things we see every day but that we never enter, spaces or places that are visually familiar but not physically. the spaces we occupy and then the ones we look at, how do we occupy them, is that the difference between space and place?”

“there is something about what you said that resonates with me: a space valuable as a sight but not as a place to enter. although i am drawn to enter it, i always enjoyed just looking at it. i walked around the fences again today. Signs say that the place is under video surveillance, although I didn’t see any cameras and I doubt it’s true. I found a new spot to observe it and saw it from a different angle. About a half of it is a lake. I wish I could tell you the colour of water, but I somehow overlooked it. Birds and ducks found it and made it their home. Then a big part of it is a concrete platform on which stand the remains of construction pillars, made of concrete and iron rods, and when I looked at them, I had the fantasy of having a place like that open for walking or sitting around, among huge abandoned concrete sculptures. I wouldn’t want to change anything there, just open it, remove the fences and let people walk through.”

about ima

intermission museum of art (ima) was founded in 2020 by rose van mierlo and john ros, in response to the cultural, social, environmental, economic and political fissures that make themselves evermore present during times of crisis and put stress on accepted systems of operation. ima provides a space for critical thinkers to respond to these moments of friction by investigating them as meaningful sites of production, instigating dialogues which will culminate in a public archive.

ima’s name references the question of open space: the flipping movement of a hand searching through archives, gaps in the pavement, performance interludes, tv-commercials, coffee breaks and silent pauses; all moments of unpoliced disruption that are typically un-institutional. at its core, ima therefore proposes the museum as a site of uncertainty; a building without walls; a non-hierarchical collection of interdisciplinary narratives and voices; both a guest and a host; and an exercise in cross-pollination. it resists the architectural premise of power that underwrites the white cube, democratizing the exhibition in terms of access. instead, its architectural premise is that of lateral networks; its vision decentralized and participatory.

FREE COFFEE** NO SMARTPHONE FOR ETERNITY

Arthur Cordier, Kunst_Planten. Ausstellungsansicht, Hgtomi Rosa, Den Haag, 2021

View this email in your browser

NEWSLETTER JANVIER 2022

Songing With Our Ancestors – Voice Workshop with Johanna Peine and TOI
How much of jellyfish, fish or amphibian is still present in the human body and voice? In this workshop we try to get to the bottom of this question by exploring the movements of early phylo- and ontogenesis in connection with the sound of our voice. In a journey through the evolution of the voice, we will encounter these phenomena and questions in a practical way and at the same time unfold the potential of the voice.

Stronger than memory and weaker than dewdrops

Karolina Markiewicz & Pascal Piron

Commissaire
Kevin Muhlen

Into the deep of AI

En anglais

With its unpredictable weather patterns and catastrophic, seismic events, climate breakdown calls forth a renewed attention to forms of vitalism – from animism and spirituality, to new materialist philosophies, to scientific research on more-than-human consciousness and Earth systems, through to resistances to settler-colonial epistemologies.

Meanwhile, machine dreams and the horizon of artificial consciousness flood popular imagination and narrative alike, in an uncanny appearance of late-capitalist surveillance in the collective unconscious.

Friday, 7th of January 2022, 5 – 8 pm

ABA is delighted to invite you to our festive New Year’s  reception at the FRIZZ GALLERY in Friedrichstraße 23A, 10963 Berlin.

In an installation designed by Studio Œ we present ABA’s recent publication FUNKENZUFLAMMEN, a compilation of ABA’s 10+1 years published by Spector Books Leipzig.

Perhaps this book holds a place in a room, or in the text of another book; perhaps it is in the sound of radio tunes, or in the pc-mouse’s clicking through a blog. It rests for a moment, in between certainty and wonder, to encounter anew what has been edited over ten years; where one’s own voice challenges the noise of the city, where our good friend, the night, pioneered the sun, and sparks turned into flames.

Studio Πcreated an installation to celebrate the book.
The following objects by Studio Œ are on show:
Chandelier de Chantier
Hanging Bookmark
Dune

Hub
Keyhole Clock
LTDO
Norman

Notch Cut (In collaboration with Jannis Zell)

The exhibition evolves over time, like the other side of a page, with the works of Alfatih and Stéphanie Rosianu, the current ABA Artists in Residence. The second edition will be on view from 14 to 22 January 2022.

Stéphanie Rosianu

Residency: Sep 2021-Feb 2022

Stéphanie Rosianu uses words as a material to create and reflect on our society. She shares with others the idea that words are a tool of emancipation from our patriarcal society of control and segregation. Her projects can take different form as stage creations, visual installations, group readings, publications and radio broadcasts. One of her last project exhibited is titled Kiosque. An itinerant project, she started in 2017, to share poetic and political books that have in common a way of questioning our society and making us attentive to human and non-human relationships. All the texts in the kiosk are photocopied and bound by hand, and accessible free of charge. Kiosque aims to propagate knowledge outside the preconceived circuits and modalities.During her stay in Berlin she wants to write the third part of a stage creation which challanges the word « common » through its communist heritage.

The Womxn Waves I-II-III

Oct 8, 2020
Schwedenstraße 16, 13357 Berlin, Germany

All the womxn’s bodies that crossed the rivers and canals of the city of Berlin are connected with each other. They were killed there, died, or only passed through these liquid spaces and together they grew into an original memory that connects distant pasts and potential futures. In this new narration a population has emerged from this violence and loss: the Womxn Waves.

fluent is pleased to announce Journey to the One, a sound essay by curator and writer Sofia Lemos where she shares preliminary notes for a new curriculum based on the practice and poetics of the Imagination. Following Gayatry Spivak’s provocation to reimagine our planet with critical and transformative prospects, it proposes a poetics of wayfinding and sense-making based on subtle bodies of knowledge drawn from western and eastern scholarly, spiritual and sensorial traditions. Herein configured as a critical-creative contemplation and utopian mode of critique, this sound essay reflects on how practising creative imagination reorients hope and reimagines possibility.

The musical interludes for this critical-creative contemplation were composed by Andrew Pecker for the 2019 album Sounds From Phantom Islands inspired by islands that appeared on historical maps but never actually existed. The status of these artefacts of European colonial expansion from the 15th to the 19th century oscillates between cartographic fact and maritime fiction. Sounds From Phantom Islands interprets and presents these imaginations as a quasi-ethnographic catalog of music and synthetic field recordings.

Sofia Lemos is a curator and writer. She is Curator at TBA21-Academy where she is developing a new curriculum that brings together arts, social and environmental justice. From 2018-2021, she was Curator of Public Programmes and Research at Nottingham Contemporary, where she led the partnership between the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, and was Associate Editor at The Contemporary Journal. In Nottingham, she initiated numerous collaborative research programmes, including the multi-platform commissioning series Sonic Continuum (2019-2022) and the critical poetics programme Five Bodies (2020-ongoing). Recently, Lemos was Associate Curator Public Programmes to the 2nd Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art – RIBOCA (2020). Previously, she was involved in the research and production of exhibitions at HKW, Berlin, PRAXES, Berlin, DRAF, London, and MACBA, Barcelona. Her writings on contemporary art and culture have featured in publications such as Art Agenda, Document Journal, Spike, Frieze and MOUSSE as well as in several catalogues and monographs. She is editor of Sonic Continuum: On the Sound and Poetics of Time (forthcoming with Archive Books, 2022), and recently co-edited the reader METABOLIC RIFTS (Atlas Projectos, 2019), and a monograph Musa paradisiaca: Views on Misunderstanding (Bom Dia Books, 2018).

Proteínas is a pilot educational project aimed at engaging with local young communities. Extending on our exhibition and book spaces, it examines the notion of learning and the energy interactions that educational infrastructures propitiate, through a series of workshops, presentations and readings. Focused on the complex spiritual–intellectual–physical–productive continuum that connects self, community and planet, it poses a vision on education which could not be more real nor more intrinsic to all physical, cultural and bio–social processes.

Titled under the notion of protein—(n.), /ˈprəʊtiːn/ the term was coined in 1838 by Dutch chemist Gerhard Johan Mulder—a substance capable of performing a vast array of functions within organisms, including catalyzation, metabolization, replication, stimuli response, transportation and structural configuration, proteins are the primary substance in transforming nutrients into energy. Taking this embodied/poetic image as point of departure, Proteínas speculates on the multiple strategies through which learning can become energy by incorporating exterior elements into our own bodies, informing molecular, subjective and collective landscapes.

Thus, much of the programme’s intent is to expand rational, objectifying and logically–driven forms of knowledge into an expanded bodily and poetic thinking. Through this, it focuses on the ways resilience can grow and how communities can become more porous to peripheral, non–academic and marginal forms of knowing. As we imagine institutions, economies and inherited social structures melting into a new worldview, we need our curricula to respond to the movements and needs of our bodies, minds, habitats and spirits.

Through a series of physical gatherings and online presentations Proteínas unfolds in a series of intimate methodologies structured in three sessions and an ongoing transversal workshop. The program also includes contributions by Camila Marambio, TANJ (The Against Nature Journal), Victor Ruiz Colomer and Joe Highton.
