THINGS TO HOLD ON TO

EXHIBITION – Things To Hold On To is an exhibition that came to be out of an emotional confrontation with enormous trash piles at the Spinnerij in Veurne. We read poetry and see images in the beauty, and yet also fragility of the characteristic compressed sisal.

SHAPED CANVAS & BLACK WATER

EXHIBITION – Nico Goedgezelschap researches the art of painting and explores the boundaries of the canvas. During his first solo show Shaped Canvas & Black Water, he shows flat paintings that develop into spatial sculptures. Goedgezelschap’s starting point is the texture of black pigments and paints. He searches for tension, but at the same time a fascinating serenity is always present.

From 21 May in Netwerk Aalst.

Installation view

Anne Fellner, Soft Cat, 2019, oil, spray paint, enamel on velvet, 100 x 80 cm / 31.50 in

Installation view

Alessandro Carano, Best time activity, 2022, oil on linen, 55 x 70 cm / 21.65 x 27.56 in

Anne Fellner, Flight, 2022, oil vinyl and pigments on oil cloth, 60 x 45 cm / 23.62 x 17.72 in

Are you hypnotized by the beauty of the softness but just seem to drift in and out of it from time to time not knowing?

I send Alessandro some images from the studio and we find ourselves in a wormhole studying a list of every Spider-Man comic book title in existence. They mostly oscillate between war terminology and superlatives, which is certainly not what we need. Finally, we find one that accesses several layers of meaning. Once our initial excitement wears off, we see its flaws.

An expression from photography, it also alludes to possible contamination or corruption. I’m reminded of another term, a keeper from my list. Cypher-like, yet also figurative, it’s used to describe precise focus and its circle of confusion. I’m certain I lifted it from the title of a crime novel and can even picture the book’s cover—cerulean blue with stark black and white elements.

Alessandro likes the title too, and it’s decided. Returning to the studio, I incorporate hazy clouds of pigment. Later, I google the book in order to revisit its narrative and possibly use a direct quote for the exhibition text. I can’t find it. I visit the local library, certain I borrowed it there—but no trace, it doesn’t exist.

Anne Fellner

Così siamo finiti a leggere i titoli di Spider Man.

Alessandro Carano

Installation view, OVR Joe Zorrilla, Galerie Greta Meert, 2022

Joe Zorrilla, Garden (Hanoi), 2018, 1/3 + 1AP, c-print  (51,6 x 61,6 cm with frame)

“The medium of photography in general has never really been of great interest to me, it is the activity of making photographs that has been important for my work.  When I was leaving graduate school there was an urgency to rent big studios and eventually hire assistants, managers – all things very professional. I wanted to avoid this route and photography has always been a tool for me to be in the world with all its geometries and energy.  It’s a form of note-taking and contemplation that is very similar to drawing for me.  Rarely are my sculptures or drawings directly correlated to the images I make, but I like to think the aimless observing through the act of making photographs informs the whole of my practice.  It helps me map my understanding of things.  To avoid the realm of the professional, one must allow a certain amount of vulnerability into the practice of life and art.”

Asynchronicity. A symposium-like gathering

Asynchronicity is a symposium-like gathering of choreographies, lectures, sounds, screenings, and discussions assembled by artist Cally Spooner with reboot: responsiveness at Kölnischer Kunstverein, Cologne and Ludwig Forum Aachen. Asynchronicity takes as its backdrop the neoliberal paradigm of an always measurable performance. In this climate performance manifests at once as a regime of disciplinary power and a condition of everyday life, in which subjects constantly quantify, manage and stratify themselves until the social imagination and desire is deadened. Asynchronicity probes how such draining quests can be subverted by collectively fostering a resistance towards chrononormativity. Coined in 2010 by queer studies scholar Elizabeth Freeman (one of the gathering’s contributors), the term chrononormativity describes the prevalent use of time to organize human bodies toward maximum productivity.

Asynchronicity responds by unravelling the resistant potentials of becoming or remaining asynchronous. Over the course of two days, collaborators – artists, performers, musicians, theoreticians, dancers, curators and designers – are invited to unfold a diverse set of propositions for alternative, fugitive temporalities, affects and bodily practices that bend and subvert familiarity and which deliberately, or naturally, remain out of sync. Jointly introducing the notion of asynchronicity as an alternative, non-sequential mode of time, texts, movements, encounters and thoughts will collide across the partnering institutions in Aachen and Cologne.

Asynchronicity is part of Cally Spooners longterm research project Deadtime (since 2018) in which she finds and handles temporal structures beyond the Clock-Time standardizations that force labour, bodies, nervous systems, and digital technologies into a completely metric-orientated future. Conceived as the first of five assemblies hosted by the artist, that challenge the chrononormative order and the performance imperative implied.

While you may enter the symposium-like gathering in your own time – any moment or time span of preference – we suggest you experience its choreography in its entirety and in both cities, if possible.

about ima

intermission museum of art was founded in 2020 by rose van mierlo and john ros, in response to the cultural, social, environmental, economic and political fissures that make themselves evermore present during times of crisis and put stress on accepted systems of operation.  ima provides a space for critical thinkers to respond to these moments of friction by investigating them as meaningful sites of production, instigating dialogues which will culminate in a public archive.

ima’s name references the question of open space: the flipping movement of a hand searching through archives, gaps in the pavement, performance interludes, tv-commercials, coffee breaks and silent pauses; all moments of unpoliced disruption that are typically un-institutional.  at its core, ima therefore proposes the museum as a site of uncertainty; a building without walls; a non-hierarchical collection of interdisciplinary narratives and voices; both a guest and a host; and an exercise in cross-pollination.  it resists the architectural premise of power that underwrites the white cube, democratizing the exhibition in terms of access. instead, its architectural premise is that of lateral networks; its vision decentralized and participatory.

REVUE FACETTES N°8
CROISEMENT(S)

Lecture with Donna Dennis

The American artists Rosemary Mayer and Donna Dennis became best friends when chance – and their individual connections to the New York poetry world – brought them to live/work spaces a block from one another in New York’s Little Italy around 1970. It was the most formative time in their young lives as artists: Inviting each other over for dinner and a look, when a new work was finished, was like a celebration and the best kind of competition. In her lecture “Rosemary Mayer and Donna Dennis: Beginnings on the Cusp of the 1970s New York City”, Donna Dennis attempts to create a sense of what it was like to be young women artists just starting out in downtown New York in the heady, challenging early days of the 1970s. As a basis for this lecture serve excerpts from the journals, which Rosemary Mayer and Donna Dennis both used as a primary source for shaping their works, along with images of their work and their friends, especially those in their feminist consciousness-raising group.

Thu 28.04.2022, 6.30 pm
Museum admission only

Donna Dennis is known for her installations inspired by vernacular architecture, urban and rural: “Ship and Dock/Nights and Days or The Gazer”, at Lesley Heller Gallery, New York (2018), “Coney Night Maze”, Neuberger Museum (2013), “BLUE BRIDGE/red shift”, SculptureCenter (1993) “Deep Station”, Brooklyn Museum (1987) “Tourist Cabins on Park Avenue” (2007). Dennis has collaborated with poets Anne Waldman, Kenward Elmslie, Ted Berrigan and Daniel Wolff. Her work is in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum, the Cleveland Art Museum, the Walker Art Center, Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst, Aachen, Germany, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Martin Z. Margulies Collection. Recipient of many grants and awards, she has permanent public art commissions in New York and Boston. After decades in New York City, she currently lives and works in the Hudson Valley.
