LOLA DAELS Open Studio Artist-in-residence Saturday the 7th of May, from 3 to 6pm  Courtesy Lola Daels Fondation CAB in Brussels is pleased to present its 18th artist-in-residence. Lola Daels, (b. Brussels, 1990) is a Brussels based artist who mostly creates sculptures and installations. She has won the Fondation CAB 2021 prize that rewards an artist from ArtContest, the annual contemporary art competition for young Belgian artists. Her practice derives from long processes of research and experimenting. Wandering and exploring, Lola continuously finds and collects objects and textures, which she reshapes and integrates into new contexts. Doing so, she poses analytical and critical inquiries about ecological, environmental and socio-political issues from its surrounding reality. Currently, she is basing her research on the Rocaille technique. A method which goes back as far as Greco-Roman antiquity, to recreate natural phenomena. The invention of Portland cement (1826) meant a major evolution for this technique. This product is easy to supply, can be sculpted as it dries and once cured it’s as hard as stone. From then on natural elements were imitated in cement, a product of the industrial revolution, an intriguing paradox. For her residency at Fondation CAB in Bruxelles, Lola is digging into this paradox. Today, Rocaille is perceived as craftsmanship, when in fact it used to be high-tech. Currently, she is learning this technique in the studio of Françoise Lombaers in Jodoigne, one of the only remaining rocailleurs in Belgium. Besides studying Rocaille, Lola grasps the opportunity to develop other (imitation) techniques such as Scagiola and Granito, with the know-how of the craftsman in question. All these techniques are linked by the vocation to imitate natural materials. At Fondation CAB, she will focus on developing and designing tableaux made according to classic Italian techniques as Scagliola and Granito. Consequently, she questions the notion of authenticity and its relationship to the universalizing world. By linking this to the impending climate crisis she attempts to address the absurdity of the prevailing mechanisms of our society and to explore their impact on the individual. To close the residency, Lola Daels will open the doors of her studio in Brussels on Saturday the 7th of May from 3 to 6pm for a public visit.
La Fondation CAB de Bruxelles a le plaisir de présenter sa 18ème artiste-en-résidence. Lola Daels (n. Bruxelles, 1990) est une artiste basée à Bruxelles qui crée principalement des sculptures et des installations. Elle a remporté le prix de la Fondation CAB 2021 qui récompense un artiste de ArtContest, le concours annuel d’art contemporain pour les jeunes artistes belges. Sa pratique découle de longs processus de recherche et d’expérimentation. En errant et en explorant, Lola trouve et collecte continuellement des objets et des textures, qu’elle remodèle et intègre dans de nouveaux contextes. Ce faisant, elle pose des questions analytiques et critiques sur les concepts écologiques, environnementaux et sociopolitiques à partir de la réalité qui l’entoure. Actuellement, elle fonde ses recherches sur la technique de la Rocaille. Une méthode qui remonte à l’antiquité gréco-romaine, pour recréer des phénomènes naturels. L’invention du ciment Portland (1826) est une évolution majeure pour cette technique. Ce produit facile à fournir, peut être sculpté en séchant et une fois durci, il devient aussi dur que la pierre. À partir de ce moment-là, les éléments naturels étaient imités en ciment ; un produit issu de la révolution industrielle, un paradoxe intriguant. Pour sa résidence à la Fondation CAB de Bruxelles, Lola creuse ce paradoxe. Aujourd’hui, la Rocaille est perçue comme un artisanat, alors qu’elle était autrefois une technologie de pointe. Actuellement l’artiste apprend cette technique dans l’atelier de Françoise Lombaers à Jodoigne, un des derniers Rocailleurs de Belgique. Outre l’étude de la Rocaille, Lola saisit l’opportunité de développer d’autres techniques (d’imitations) comme la Scagiola et le Granito, avec le savoir-faire de l’artisan en question. Toutes ces techniques sont liées par l’intention d’imiter les matériaux naturels. À la Fondation CAB, elle se concentre sur le développement et la conception de tableaux réalisés selon les techniques italiennes classiques comme la Scagliola et le Granito. Par conséquent, elle interroge la notion d’authenticité et sa relation avec le monde universalisant. En faisant le lien avec la crise climatique imminente, elle tente d’aborder l’absurdité des mécanismes dominants de notre société et d’explorer leur impact sur l’individu. Pour clôturer la résidence, Lola Daels ouvrira les portes de son studio à Bruxelles le samedi 7 mai de 15h à 18h.

Ze heeft de Fondation CAB 2021-prijs gewonnen die een kunstenaar beloont van ArtContest, de jaarlijkse wedstrijd voor hedendaagse kunst voor jonge Belgische kunstenaars. Haar werk komt voort uit een lang proces van experimenten en onderzoeken. Zwervend en verkennend, vindt en verzamelt Lola voortdurend objecten en materialen die ze hervormt en integreert in een nieuwe context. Op die manier stelt ze analytische en kritische vragen over ecologische, milieu- en socio-politieke kwesties vanuit hun omgeving. Momenteel voert ze onderzoek naar de Rocaille stijl. Bij de Fondation CAB richt zij zich op de ontwikkeling en vormgeving van schilderijen gemaakt met behulp van klassieke Italiaanse technieken zoals Scagliola en Granito. Als gevolg daarvan stelt zij het begrip authenticiteit en de relatie ervan met de universaliserende wereld ter discussie. Door de link te leggen met de dreigende klimaatcrisis probeert ze de absurditeit van de dominante mechanismen van onze maatschappij aan de orde te stellen en hun impact op het individu te onderzoeken. Ter afsluiting van de residentie opent Lola Daels de deuren van haar atelier in Brussel op zaterdag 7 mei van 15 tot 18 uur.

The exhibition includes artworks shown in historic exhibitions and other sculptures never previously exhibited. It traces the different periods of the artist’s oeuvre, featuring linear sculptures in acrylic yarn, elastic cord, and steel rod. The artist conceived a relationship to spaces seemingly both dematerialized and entirely concrete, highlighting planes and volumes achieved with great economy of means. Sandback invested the void while connecting the floor, ceiling, and walls, inscribing all these elements. In all his work, Sandback combined the exactitude of the physical sciences with the delicacy of corporeal affect. An additional monumental artwork is presented in the Building Flagey in Ixelles. This exhibition and its publication have been realized by Foundation CAB in cooperation with the Fred Sandback Estate and Archive.
La Fondation CAB a l’honneur de présenter Fred Sandback au cœur d’une exposition personnelle de sculptures et de reliefs du célèbre artiste américain (1943-2003). L’exposition comprend des œuvres présentées dans des expositions historiques et d’autres sculptures jamais exposées auparavant. Elle retrace les différentes périodes de l’œuvre de l’artiste, avec des sculptures linéaires en fil acrylique, cordes élastiques et tiges d’acier. L’artiste a conçu une relation à des espaces vraisemblablement à la fois dématérialisés et entièrement concrets, mettant en évidence des plans et des volumes réalisés avec une grande économie de moyens. Sandback investit le vide tout en reliant le sol, le plafond et les murs, inscrivant tous ces éléments dans son espace. Dans toute son œuvre, Sandback combine l’exactitude des sciences physiques avec la délicatesse de l’affect corporel. Une œuvre est également exposée dans le bâtiment Flagey à Ixelles. Cette exposition et sa publication ont été réalisées par la Fondation CAB en coopération avec Fred Sandback Estate & Archive.

De tentoonstelling omvat kunstwerken die in historische tentoonstellingen te zien waren, samen metandere, nooit eerder getoonde sculpturen. Ze schetst een beeld van de verschillende periodes in het oeuvre van de kunstenaar met lineaire sculpturen in acrylgaren, elastisch koord en stalen staven. De kunstenaar creëerde een relatie tot ruimtes die zowel gedematerialiseerd, als volstrekt concreet lijken. Hierbij legde hij de nadruk op vlakken en volumes die met een grote spaarzaamheid in het gebruik van materialen werden verwezenlijkt. Sandback investeerde in de leegte terwijl hij de vloer, het plafond en de muren met elkaar verbond en op die manier al deze elementen in zijn ruimte integreerde. In zijn werk combineerde Sandback de precisie van de natuurwetenschappen met de fijngevoeligheid van het lichamelijke affect. Een ander monumentaal kunstwerk is te vinden in het Flageygebouw in Elsene. Deze tentoonstelling en de publicatie werden gerealiseerd door Fondation CAB in samenwerking met Fred Sandback Estate and Archive.
