New artist publications by Wim Cuyvers and Nora Torato in our bookshop!

BOOK LAUNCH 19.05 & 29.05.2022
'DE-AD'
Wim Cuyvers

EN – In his new publication ‘DE-AD’, architect-artist-writer-forester Wim Cuyvers bundles both recent and new essays as well as designs of architectural projects that were never executed. With ‘DE-AD’ Cuyvers on the one hand makes an overview of the spaces he searched and searches for, and he abstracts and names the elements that characterize those spaces; on the other hand, in this book he makes his world view explicit.

The book will be launched on location in Brussels and Antwerp, in the presence of the artist. For each moment Wim Cuyvers prepares a different artist talk:

19.05.2022 at 19h – CIVA, Brussels
29.05.2022 at 15h – Antwerp Art Weekend – BOOOOOKS

Pool 5
Nora Turato

EN – In Nora Turato’s virtuosic performances, spoken word, graphic design, and bookmaking are intertwined to explore the possibilities of language in a culture oversaturated with information. Turato collects words and phrases from a range of sources and arranges these pools of text into a growing script that she memorizes and performs, alternating rhythm and intonation, voices and modes. Pool 5  was coproduced by the Frans Masereel Centrum and premiered earlier this year during Turato's solo exhibition at MoMA (NY).

Francesca Torzo door Boumediene Belbachir

Ontmoetingen in geluid.

Dear friends,

Once again in May we are able to offer diverse and interesting events to accompany our exhibition program and your visit to the Ludwig Forum!

Our current exhibition – Rosemary Mayer. Ways of Attaching – is running until May 22. We are pleased to announce that from now on refugees of all nationalities and persons helping them on a voluntary basis enjoy free admission to all municipal museums.

We would also like to draw your attention to International Museum Day on May 15 and the workshops for youths and adults we are offering. We also hope to be able to welcome you to the panel discussion, The New Ludwig Heads. Eva Birkenstock, the new director at the Ludwig Forum Aachen, will be joined by Dr. Carla Cugini, the new chief executive officer of the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation, and Till-Holger Borchert, the new director of the Suermondt-Ludwig Museum.

We are looking forward to seeing you at the Ludwig Forum!

Free Admission for All Refugees

From now on the museums of the city of Aachen are free for all refugees and their volunteer companions. The Ukrainian passport or the residence status of the refugees is sufficient as proof at the museum ticket office.

“Inspired by the situation of Ukrainian refugees, we are opening the doors to our cultural institutions,” says Mayor Sibylle Keupen. “This applies to all refugees, wherever they come from, all are welcome, because culture knows no borders.”

Susanne Schwier, Assistant Mayor for Youth, Education and Culture, adds: “I am delighted when children and young people in particular can be creative together and get different ideas. That’s why we’re keeping the Museum Service’s educational offerings free for refugee children and their families as well.”

This arrangement is initially valid until Dec. 31, 2022.

International Museum Day

Sunday May 15, 2022, is International Museum Day, and to mark the occasion admission to all museums is free.

The Program in the Ludwig Forum Aachen:
10 a.m. to 12 a.m.: Forget Me Not – a Workshop for Youths and Adults
The drawing and painting of flowers has inspired many artists. The workshop offers the chance to paint small watercolors of flowers, simply for the pleasure they bring or to use them as greeting cards. Details of compositions can be enlarged and experimented with to create fascinating and colorful pictures. If the sun shines we can paint outside in the park.

11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Slips and Sketches –  Family Workshop
Discover your favorite motifs and themes while exploring the museum with family or friends. You can sketch and note whatever takes your eye, inspires or intrigues you. Draw, scribble, write or even invent whatever you feel like. At the end we will have a diverse collection of drawings and thoughts on small slips of paper. Each slip will be given a fitting place in a self-made sketchbook or we will arrange them into one large picture.

Guided Tours:
12 a.m.: Geometry and Flowers. A Corresponding Collection Presentation
3 p.m.: Rosemary Mayer. Ways of Attaching

Panel Discussion with the New “Ludwig Heads”

On Thursday, May 19, 2022, commencing at 6 p.m., the Ludwig Forum Aachen will host an exclusive evening with the new “Ludwig Heads”.

There has never been such an extensive change of head personnel in Aachen’s cultural landscape. Almost all the top positions at the premier institutions have recently seen new appointments or will so soon. The institutions of the Ludwig family are no exception. Carla Cugini is the new executive officer of the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation (which celebrates its 25th birthday this year), Eva Birkenstock the new director at the Ludwig Forum, and Till-Holger Borchert new director of the Suermondt-Ludwig Museum.

The three not only now share the Ludwig name, but also a great love of art. But what drives them on and fuels their passion? Which themes and subjects from art and culture – and beyond – are close to their heart? What are their plans for their respective institutions? How do they see Aachen, both as a key location of culture and a new home? And what about the outstanding collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig? Carla Cugini, Eva Birkenstock, and Till-Holger Borchert will be joined by Christian Rein, the arts editor at the Aachener Zeitung and Aachener Nachrichten.

Get to know Carla Cugini, Eva Birkenstock, and Till-Holger Borchert during an exclusive evening organized by the AZ/AN Friends Association in cooperation with the Ludwig Forum and the Friends of the Ludwig Forum. Come along to our exclusive forum, the new Ludwig Minds!

Thursday, May 19, 2022, 6 p.m.
Admission is free. Registration by e-mail is requested.

OVERTOON NEWSLETTER – MAY 2022

  OVERTOON NEWSLETTER – MAY 2022

FOCUS – (un)common grounds at iMAL

Overtoon and Werktank commissioned Josue Aliendre Carvani, Natalia Barczyńska and Valentina Bianchi from Curatorial Studies at KASK to present an exhibition at iMAL with artists from their pool.
(un)common grounds is a joint collaboration between Werktank and Overtoon’s residents at iMAL. Inspired by the common trajectories shared by all three platforms which focus on research, experimentation, and processes, the exhibition takes as its framework the different states of creation and their subsequent transformations. These experiences emerge in three parallel and overlapping paths. The first, ‘TESTING GROUND’ brings together two artists by giving them the space to develop ideas and present them in multiple moments in different modalities throughout the duration of the exhibition. The second, ‘THE GROUND OF PRESENCE’ incorporates works that revolve around the alteration of perception in the spectators, manipulating their senses. Lastly, ‘VIRTUAL GROUND’ allows the exhibition to extend beyond its physical limitations into a limitless void. Through the display of artwork and the related public program (un)common grounds unveils underestimated aspects of artistic production and challenges conventional ways of exhibition making.

Opening THIS Saturday 14 May between 17:00 and 20:00.
With performances:
“Tot de kaars uit is” by Stijn Wybouw, 17:00 – 19:00
“La Lumitérale” by Laurie-Anne Jaubert, 19:30

Afterwards the Emerging Sound Art showcase (sold out) is presented at Q-O2 in the same building.
Exhibition opening times: Wed – Fri: 13h-19h – Sat & Sun: 12h-18h – until 29 May !

VISITORS PROGRAMME

Overtoon teams up with STUK to invite 10 international sound art curators and programmers to visit exhibitions, showcases, studio presentations and performances of in total 19 artists related to Overtoon.

Overtoon will present her concert in the Portuguese festival Jardins Efémeros in July. This month she presents the show at the Hear Here Festival in a double bill with Maika Garnica, and at the Emerging Sound Art showcase organized by Q-O2, Musica and STUK. The sound sculptures will also be on display in the iMAL exhibition (un)common grounds.

Hear Here Live: Friday 20 May at Cas-co, 20:00

INC Newsletter May 2022

In our May newsletter, we present to you the new book by Geert Lovink and a new zine: PrtScn: The Lazy Art of Screenshot. We also highlight new posts regarding the Ukrainian war. Scroll down for more…

Just Out: Stuck on the Platform – Reclaiming the Internet by Geert Lovink

Afbeelding
INC is proud to present to you Geert Lovink’s new book: Stuck on the Platform, Reclaiming the Internet. The book is published in five languages, English (Valiz), Spanish (Holobionte Ediciones), followed in August by German (Transcript Verlag), then Italian (Nero) and Turkish (İletişim). The original English edition, published by Valiz (Amsterdam) can be ordered now and found in bookstores. More info here. The global book launch is in Bologna on May 6, 2022, 6pm, via Pietralata 58.

The blurb:
We’re all trapped. No matter how hard you try to delete apps from your phone, the power of seduction draws you back. Doom scrolling is the new normal of a 24/7 online life. What happens when your home office starts to feel like a call center and you’re too fried to log out of Facebook? We’re addicted to large-scale platforms, unable to return to the frivolous age of decentralized networks. How do we make sense of the rising disaffection with the platform condition? Read more

New Zine – PrtScn: The Lazy Art of Screenshot

Afbeelding
The zine PrtScn: The Lazy Art of Screenshot, edited by Dunja Nešović, gathered more than 30 authors in an aim to collectively explore the omnipresent, yet somehow often overlooked, screenshot as a contemporary digital image and practice that fuses the human and machinic boundaries of authorship and vision. As the screenshot travels through networks and is stored away safely in the depths of our hard drives or cloud depositories, a collection of written and visual works featured in PrtScn unpacks these digital movements, freezes and many points (and pixels) in between.

Below the Market: On the Artist Pension Trust and the Future of Self-Organized Redistribution

by SEPP ECKENHAUSSEN

Artists and other cultural workers have tried to create stable, long-term collective income systems for themselves forever. In 2004, an American tech entrepreneur launched one of the most ambitious redistribution schemes up to date, the Artist Pension Trust (APT). The idea was to give artists not just long-term income, but even a pension—a luxury highly uncommon among the professional group. Practically, the trust pools artworks of participating artists and sells them over time to provide the artists with a stable,…. continue reading

The Internet is The Recipe: Sexual and Psychological Education in Digital Spheres

by MORGANE BILLUART

It feels as if I have been bleeding for 10 days. Sometimes, I remember the ways in which I used to try to keep on behaving as if my menstrual cycles were not affecting me. Specifically, the act of performing intimate relationships while I was bleeding.  I feel terrible for the young woman who thought that her sexual non-accessibility would cost her to lose what she loved. Today, I would tell her that losing happens anyway, whether or not you impose matters on your body. continue reading

Vernissage Saturday May 20 6pm

The white of the porcelain as an evocation of the blue of the oceans. On one side, the archipelagos, which according to the philosopher Edouard Glissant, bring people together while the continents divide them.

On the other side, the jellyfish, creatures both sublime and disturbing, of absolute elegance, strangely ecological, theoretically immortal, carried wherever the currents take them. A clear and calm universe that rests us from the turmoil and roughness of the world.

Vernissage Saturday May 20 6-9pm
Exhibition May 20 – June 11

Ten years ago, in his creative graphic design studio, Franck Sarfati instituted the “sculptural Friday” just for himself. From that moment on, he devoted one day a week to this passion which quickly became a profession.
A few years later, Franck Sarfati instituted a weekly “sculptural week”, with all his time now devoted to sculpture. This was the beginning of a career entirely devoted to art.

MAY 12 – 7 PM — BOOK LAUNCH INVITATION: THE BERLIN BIRTHDAY AT MOTTO BOOKS BERLIN — EVERYTHING LOOKS BETTER WITH LOVE / ED. SALON DU SALON

Wouter

We would be happy to receive you at MOTTO BOOKS BERLIN on the occasion of the release of EVERYTHING LOOK BETTER WITH LOVE artist book by MICHAËL SELLAM published by SALON DU SALON.

Thursday MAY 12th 2022 at 7pm

In the presence of the publisher and friends.

MOTTO BERLIN, Skalitzer Str. 68, 10997 Berlin, Germany

EVERYTHING LOOKS BETTER WITH LOVE

The protocol for the production of the book EVERYTHING LOOKS BETTER WITH LOVE is simple. There is a certain nonchalance, few gestures. These gestures directly question how a work is produced.

The forms produced would have what Tristan Garcia calls an equal ontological dignity.

“We live in this world of things, where a cutting of acacia, a gene, a computer-generated image, a transplantable hand, a musical sample, a trademarked name, or a sexual service are comparable things”. (Tristan Garcia, Form and Object: A Treatise on Things, Edinburgh University Press, 2014, p. 1.).

It is a question of experimenting with a whole system of possible operations carried out with an unfailing form of love for things, gestures and beings.

Michaël Sellam, Paris

TOUT SEMBLE MIEUX AVEC DE L’AMOUR

The protocol for the production of the works presented at Salon du Salon is simple. There is a certain nonchalance, few gestures. These gestures directly question how a work is produced. The stages of development of these works are predefined: visiting museums, taking photographs, opening them on a computer, copying, pasting, adjusting, moving and recording. The same protocol is applied to sculptures: looking for models of works of art, downloading them, opening them on a computer, copying, pasting, adjusting, moving and recording. The finalized digital document is then sent via the internet for printing. Once received, its elements are arranged and displayed. My task is to keep the machine running, to test my method, to extend it and to accept the hazards of improvisation, chaos and surprise. The forms produced would have what Tristan Garcia calls an equal ontological dignity.

«
We live in this world of things, where a cutting of acacia, a gene, a computer-generated image, a transplantable hand, a musical sample, a trademarked name, or a sexual service are comparable things. » (1)

In addition to this drift in the museum rooms, there is a drift on the many websites that offer models, files of digitised works. This monstrous, distorted approach represents both a way of proceeding and a principle of equality. Everything is reduced to a relation to forms, remains elusive. It is difficult to establish substantive relations between these forms, but there is something that connects them. A certain desire, a willingness, a need projected in the use or contemplation of the object, the gesture, the icon. These works and these attitudes embody the same joyful and inoperative melancholy in the world. Beyond the meaning that can be extracted from it, this process questions copying, documentation and capture. Understanding, creating, citing, using, deforming, destroying, copying and pasting; acting, drifting too.

This set of works takes a precise and critical look at what computing is changing in our way of thinking and understanding the world. It is a question of experimenting with a whole system of possible operations carried out with an unfailing form of love for things, gestures and beings.

This publication is both a synthesis and an extension of these issues.

Qu’il est bon
de se réveiller le matin
tout seul
et de se dire de l’art
que vous l’aimez
que vous l’aimez plus que tout
au monde

We are proud to present Transferring Cultures into Bodies, a group show curated by Adriana González Hulshof, former director of Amsterdam Art, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Amsterdam Art.

Adriana González Hulshof was born in Mexico and grew up in Peru, later in the Netherlands. Her own memories and experiences were formed by a mix of colors, sounds and a wealth of images. That background made her curious about how we deal with the influences of diverse cultures. How do you perceive the world when you grow up with an ever-changing perspective of traditions and customs and their intrinsic value systems? How do you observe the world when your own observation is rooted in the visual language of those various cultures?

The invitation to curate an exhibition at tegenboschvanvreden for Amsterdam Art Weekend’s tenth edition was, for Adriana González Hulshof, a wonderful oppor, tunity to draw ´n those personal issues in contemplating the work of artists whose practice relates to visual art and fashion. Fashion and visual art can tell stories about rituals, about cultures, about time, about the lives of people. This became the point of departure for the exhibition Transferring Cultures into Bodies.

The artists included in Transferring Cultures into Bodies have in common the aspect that they use their work, consciously or unconsciously, to investigate their cultural heritage, break with traditions and stereotypes, combine them or in fact place them in a new context. Their artistic practice spans a range of fields, among them visual art, fashion, craft and mass production. Culture and subculture go hand in hand. The work of these artists shows how various elements can be interwoven. For Faig Ahmed, Karim Adduchi, Lisa Konno, Paul Kooiker, Ana Navas, Aimée Zita Lemo & Elisa Joolen the artistic approach is dynamic and fluid. It aims to tell (socially relevant) stories and to present these in a visual manner.

MAIN SPACE EXHIBITION

Anders Dickson
Powercells, the commons

Wednesday 11 May – Sunday 15 May
Wed, Thu, Sat: 12 – 18 hrs
Fri, Sun: 12 – 19 hrs

Anders Dickson’s multifaceted practice invites intimate encounters with an obscure, weird mirror of the ubiquitous world.  Themes ranging from spirituality, memory, and ‘high strangeness’ are coloured by traces of Americana as the artist implements them into his work.  Hallucinatory paintings bleed into space in the form of sculptural objects, photography and video, assembled in immersive installations.
At P/////AKT Dickson is presenting an immersive installation consisting of new works. The projects marks the first episode of Turning to Dust and Bones.

Anders Dickson (USA) exhibited his work at The Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (2022); Kayoko Yuki Gallery, Tokyo (2021); Wschod Gallery, War-saw (2021); Annet Gelink Gallery, Amsterdam (2021); 15 Orient Gallery, Paris (2020); The Oracle, Berlin (2018); Vleeshal, Middelburg (2018); Gisela Capitain Gallery, Cologne (2017); The Beach Office, Berlin (2017), and Tanya Leighton Gallery, Berlin (2017). He attended the De Ateliers (2017-2019), The Staedelschule in Frankfurt am Main, and the Staatliche Akademie der bildenden Kuenste, Karlsruhe. Dickson is also member and co-founder of the netherlands-based artist initiative Root Canal (www.rootcanal.eu).

Mixtape launch and bingo

Live performance by echo + seashell
Sunday 15 May, 17 – 19 hrs
Bar open from 17 hrs, start performance at 17:15 hrs

echo + seashell are artists Henna Hyvarinen (Finland) and Susan Kooi (Netherlands). Their collaboration consists out of live music performances, videos and exhibitions. The music is often produced in collaboration with different musicians, resulting in variations in both style and genre. The lyrics and way of speaking form the core, the ‘baby soul’ of echo + seashell.

echo + seashell have performed amongst others at Paradiso, de Appel Arts Centre, de Ateliers, OT301 and for Girls Like Us at Butchers Tears in Amsterdam, 1646 in the Hague, showroom MAMA and Worm in Rotterdam, Flutgraben in Berlin, Sorbus and Bombshelter in Helsinki, UP STATE in Zurich, the Others in Turin, the Antagon Festival and Tehdas Theater in Turku, Fokidos in Athens, the Legion in Calgary, the Banff Centre in Banff and Selectors in Vancouver.

Fourteen artists, musicians and writers were invited to contribute to the mix tape I’ll Never be a Star I’ve Always Been the Moon, initiated by the artist collective Root Canal. As a constructive answer to the difficulties of organizing physical exhibitions in the past year, the mix tape is recorded on classic tape cassettes, which are sent out to potential listeners and bring a group exhibition to their homes. Every contributor received carte blanche for the content of their recording, with the sole restriction that it could not be longer than 5 minutes. The resulting mix tape – an eclectic amalgam of contributions ranging from spoken word to noise poetry to dream interpretations, alternated among others with Finnish rap, garage punk and cover songs – will be presented in the P/////AKTSALON for the duration of the Art Weekend.
