When the angels from above (group exhibition)

EN FR NL

Dear ⓐⓡⓖⓞⓢ reader,

Our doors swing wide open again as temperatures continue to rise and spring gradually morphs into summer. We’re already feeling the flight and freedom associated with our favourite season lurking at the horizon, but first we would like to inform you about our upcoming programmes at 𝓪𝓻𝓰𝓸𝓼 in the here and now!

Our new, collective exhibition When the angels from above is experiential and poetic, offering a critical yet lighthearted look at alternative forms of healing and spirituality. Presenting complex processes alongside open-ended and unresolved restorative approaches, it invites visitors to enter a space of mutual exchange that is both spiritual and anchored in the here and now.

Come share a quick bite, a ginger shot, or chat with the 𝕒𝕣𝕘𝕠𝕤 team throughout the opening on Saturday 28 May, 18–21:00. Or get a tarot card reading by performance artist elish, while discovering the artworks by AA Bronson and Ryan Brewer, Andrea Éva Győri, Elisa Pinto, Don and Moki Cherry, Grace Ndiritu, Laraaji, and Paul Shemisi Betutua, which pulsate with unknown possibilities and contribute to poetic as well as spiritual freedom.

When the angels from above is dedicated to the memory of the late Hungarian artist Andrea Éva Győri, who sadly passed away as we were preparing for the exhibition. It features a new version of Győri’s video Space for Becoming a Tiger, as well as eight colourful, vibrant drawings from the Study on Space series. These works are a testament to the artist’s truly inspiring, unmatched artistic legacy, which we’re sure will continue to captivate visitors long after this exhibition 💛

Additionally, we would also like to bring our year-long Alexander Kluge exhibition to your attention, which is now entering its fourth chapter. An entirely new selection of Minutenfilme is waiting for you, to be explored by the hungriest minds and eyes!

In distribution news, we’re happy to announce that Mouaad el Salem’s This Day Won’t Last continues its amazing run at festival screenings. This time around, the video has been selected for the Lago Film festival, which takes place from 22–30 July in Revine Lago, Italy.

Also, Hänzel & Gretzel’s seminal video-installation Hamletmachine from 1998 will be on view at M HKA as part of their upcoming Lenin Was a Mushroom – Moving Images in the 1990s exhibition, which runs 1 June–21 August. Don’t miss out on this one!

Lastly, we are excited to announce that Julia Wielgus has recently joined the team as our finance & administration coordinator. Julia holds a degree in art history from the Freie Universität in Berlin and has extensive experience working in various arts administrative contexts, most recently as gallery manager at Jan Mot in Brussels. With Julia, we look forward to further professionalising and streamlining our 𝚊𝚛𝚐𝚘𝚜 activities in the near and more distant future. Welcome, Julia!

Oh yes, one more thing: make sure to add Joe Smooth’s Promised Land to your spring/summer playlist, a beautiful, iconic early deep house track from Chicago, IL, from which When the angels from above takes its title. We can confirm that a daily dance ritual to this song has serious healing effects!

Take care,

Niels with Dagmar, Daria, Inge, Jonas, Julia, Katia, Katoucha, Laurence, Maryam, Rebecca, Sander, Stijn / soɓɹɐ

FR

Cher.e lecte.u.r.ice d’ₐᵣᶢᴼˢ,

Niels avec Dagmar, Daria, Inge, Jonas, Katia, Katoucha, Laurence, Maryam, Rebecca, Sander, Stijn / soɓɹɐ

NL

Beste ₐᵣᶢᴼˢ-lezer,

Mouaad el Salem’s This Day Won’t Last blijft schitteren op het festival circuit. Was a Mushroom – Moving Images in the 1990s tentoonstelling.

Niels met Dagmar, Daria, Inge, Jonas, Katia, Katoucha, Laurence, Maryam, Rebecca, Sander, Stijn / soɓɹɐ

FUNKENZUFLAMMEN „ABA 10+1 years artists research”

A book edited by Susanne Kriemann and Aleksander Komarov, designed by Tobias Wenig, published by Spector Books, 360 p, over 200 images, edition 500.

“Perhaps this book holds a place in a room, or in the text of another book; perhaps it is in the sound of radio tunes, or in the pc-mouse’s clicking through a blog. It rests for a moment, in between certainty and wonder, to encounter anew what has been edited over ten years; where one’s own voice challenges the noise of the city, where our good friend, the night, pioneered the sun, and sparks turned into flames “

Schwedenstraße 16, 13357 Berlin, Germany

All the womxn’s bodies that crossed the rivers and canals of the city of Berlin are connected with each other. They were killed there, died, or only passed through these liquid spaces and together they grew into an original memory that connects distant pasts and potential futures. In this new narration a population has emerged from this violence and loss: the Womxn Waves.

KU TZU-CHUN

«My intention is to build up an installation as prose. A desire to communicate is hidden within it

Tzu-chun Ku’s words describe what is at the core of her artistic practice. Inspired by painting and its history, the installations of Tzu-chun Ku are compositions of discreet works juxtaposed next to each other, achieving a relationship with the space in which they are displayed. Among the constituent parts of Tzu-chun Ku’s installations are sculptures, objets trouvés, almost imperceptible changes with-in the display, photographs and videos. »

Compositional rules, colours and in particular, light conditions. According to the artist, all three are what draw her attention within the space of painting, providing her a vocabulary through which realise her installations. From this perspective, each element configuring the space with which Tzu-chun Ku interacts becomes part of her practice, subtly shifting the visitors’ attention toward otherwise overlooked details, and so revealing the conditions of display at the same time. By separating movable walls that are supposed to be connected, or taking away the countertop of a room, the artist shows how these items contribute to the construction of a space. This is combined with her interest in intervening within a three-dimensional space.

Light plays a key role in understanding Tzu-Chun’s practice. When traveling around the world, she takes picture of the lighting conditions of the museums that she visits. These shots become part of a diary, but at the same time, question the materiality of a picture and the intersection between an object, its display surround and our perception of it. Display is another key term in her subtle artistic practice. By positioning a transparent stand in front of a vase of roses and giving the work the title ‘Still Life’, Tzu-Chun taps into an art historical genre, revitalising it with a simple gesture. Despite claiming her interest in creating prose, the work is really a poetic one, generated by her sensibilities toward the space, the act of displaying and the works that come to live next to each other.

May Interjection: BROKEN LITTLE THINGS by Ellie Hoskins

Ellie Hoskins is an artist and writer from Wigton, Cumbria who currently lives and works in Liverpool. Her work is borne out of a constant struggle to harmonise polarized emotions: tragedy sits alongside comedy, chaos alongside calm, seriousness alongside silliness, and despair alongside hope. Other than that, she rarely knows what she’s doing. Her process is instinctive and quick, and she places her faith in the fact that one sentence will lead to another. And then another. And another. And eventually something bigger than the sentences, something like a theme or a meaning or a punchline, will surface.

De ‘Prospects’ van Art Rotterdam 2022

Last chance and finissage of Anders Dickson – Powercells, the commons

View this email in your browser

Special Event on Sunday 29 May, 17.00 – 19.00 hrs

17.00 hrs: bar open
17.30 hrs: reading of a commissioned text by Hannah Chris Lomans and a performance by Nadh Lingyun Cao

P/////AKT is thrilled to kick-off the first edition of the public program for the series Turning to Dust and Bones, of which Anders Dickson’s solo exhibition marks the first part and which will continue with solo projects by Koen Kloosterhuis, Kristina Sedlerova-Villanen, Aslan Goisum, Giulia Cenci and Rodrigo Hérnandez. Throughout the series, that will run until April 2023, we will be closely collaborating with Asha Karami and Fabienne Rachmadiev, representing DIG – the Internet Guide of literature magazine De Gids and invited to contextualise the series through contributions in writing and events.

Performance: Nadh Lingyun Cao – a Vortex, a VormVole

Each id-entity is idiosyncratic, visible or invisible, material or immaterial, audible or inaudible, as well as those queered.
The concurrent urge for evanescence and emergence, id est, the common.
Worlds that otherworldly.
A peripheral language that to be felt.
Soma, liquefy, solidify, morphous.
Space contains, opens, the inexplicable.
Be that strange tissue into the vibratory volume.
Omnipresence is neither an optical illusion nor a fiction,
it is the actuality of the real and the whole.

Nadh Lingyun Cao’s performative practice explores myth, magic, spirituality and healing. Their curiosity for the vastness of the space is the impetus in the making, often feeling the volume of their work is guided by some mysterious forces, unconscious for the cerebral. Their performance is heavily influenced by Buddhist and Taoist philosophy, such as the concept of impermanence, the practice of non-self, non-attachment, wu wei, zi ran and qi etc.

Nadh originally comes from China, currently lives and works in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Retrospectively, they received BFA degrees from Gerrit Rietveld Academy and Shanghai Theatre Academy.

Reading: Hannah Chris Lomans

Hannah Chris Lomans is a writer. They studied Creative Writing at ArtEZ and participated in the Slow Writing Lab, an open master’s degree program organised by the Dutch Foundation for Literature. For Hannah Chris, whose writing departs from both a longing for and belief in transformation, text is a place that allows them to embody a radical, yet precarious fluidity. In 2020 they attended the Paris writers residency of deBuren, a Flamish-Dutch House for culture and debate, and published the chapbook Blijf de kou wegstrijken at Wintertuin Uitgeverij. Their texts appeared i.e. in magazine for literature De Gids and NRC Handelsblad and on platforms such as Brainwash Festival, Wintertuinfestival, Nieuwe Types, Perdu and Frontaal. Currently they are working on their debut book which will be published by
De Bezige Bij.

Anders Dickson
Powercells, the commons

24 April – 29 May 2022
Thu – Sun, 14 – 18 hrs

Anders Dickson’s multifaceted practice invites intimate encounters with an obscure, weird mirror of the ubiquitous world.  Themes ranging from spirituality, memory, and ‘high strangeness’ are coloured by traces of Americana as the artist implements them into his work.  Hallucinatory paintings bleed into space in the form of sculptural objects, photography and video, assembled in immersive installations.
At P/////AKT Dickson is presenting an immersive installation consisting of new works. The projects marks the first episode of Turning to Dust and Bones.

Anders Dickson (USA) exhibited his work at The Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt (2022); Kayoko Yuki Gallery, Tokyo (2021); Wschod Gallery, War-saw (2021); Annet Gelink Gallery, Amsterdam (2021); 15 Orient Gallery, Paris (2020); The Oracle, Berlin (2018); Vleeshal, Middelburg (2018); Gisela Capitain Gallery, Cologne (2017); The Beach Office, Berlin (2017), and Tanya Leighton Gallery, Berlin (2017). He attended the De Ateliers (2017-2019), The Staedelschule in Frankfurt am Main, and the Staatliche Akademie der bildenden Kuenste, Karlsruhe. Dickson is also member and co-founder of the netherlands-based artist initiative Root Canal (www.rootcanal.eu).

Root Canal – I’ll Never be a Star, I’ve Always Been the Moon

24 April – 29 May 2022
Thu – Sun, 14 – 18 hrs

Fourteen artists, musicians and writers were invited to contribute to the mix tape I’ll Never be a Star I’ve Always Been the Moon, initiated by the artist collective Root Canal. As a constructive answer to the difficulties of organizing physical exhibitions in the past year, the mix tape is recorded on classic tape cassettes, which are sent out to potential listeners and bring a group exhibition to their homes. Every contributor received carte blanche for the content of their recording, with the sole restriction that it could not be longer than 5 minutes. The resulting mix tape – an eclectic amalgam of contributions ranging from spoken word to noise poetry to dream interpretations, alternated among others with Finnish rap, garage punk and cover songs – is presented in the P/////AKTSALON.

Contributing artists: Yong Xiang Li, Elif Saydam, Kuupuu featuring Draama-Helmi, echo+seashell  featuring Torus, Luzie Meyer, Manuela Gernedel, Nicolas Ceccaldi, Michiel Huijben, No Ice!!!, TRJJ, Vittorio Brodmann, Lonely Boys, VE holdings featuring Sakeul and Mona Varichon, Zoë d’Hont

Root Canal consists of the artists Anders Dickson, Frieder Haller, Henna Hyvärinen and Thomas Swinkels. In 2017, they started their exhibition practice in an attic in the east of Amsterdam where the four lived together. Upon leaving their attic space, the initiative has continued to exist nomadically. They curated exhibitions in various unofficial but invaluable exhibition spaces locations, such as a camper van, bedrooms, a gallery basement, as well as at the Vleeshal Center for Contemporary Art, Middelburg, NL.

Uitnodiging finissage Catching Up in the Archive
Zondag 29 mei 2022
16:00-19:00 uur

Zonder jullie was Catching Up in the Archive niet mogelijk geweest.

Repräsentantinnen
(in-residence)

Louisa Clement

SOUVENHERE, walk by Lucia Palladino & Bruno De Wachter
27/05 – 28/05/2022, Laken

[EN] Lucia Palladino and Bruno De Wachter invite you for an afternoon walk in Jette, Laken and your own mind. A map indicates seven points, that you will connect in the order of your choice. Places evoke other places – “it makes me think of…”. You play the game of leaving and finding traces, of writing and hiding notes. The map gets colored by the individual observations and by personal memories of other places at other times.

There will be two editions of the walk, on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 MayEach time, a maximum of 14 people can participate. You can register via mail until the day before the walk.

The walk will start at 13h30 at Sun Café, next to metro station Pannenhuis. The event will end around 19:00h at the same place.

Doch was treibt sie an?

Europa im Zeitenwechsel hält General a.D.

General a.D.

The Letters of Rosemary & Bernadette Mayer, 1976-1980

The Golden Book of Words.

Panel Discussion “The New Ludwig Heads”

Tonight at 6 pm, the Ludwig Forum Aachen will host an exclusive evening with the new “Ludwig Heads.”

There has never been such an extensive change of head personnel in Aachen’s cultural landscape. Almost all the top positions at the premier institutions have recently seen new appointments or will so soon. The institutions of the Ludwig family are no exception. Carla Cugini is the new executive officer of the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation (which celebrates its 25th birthday this year), Eva Birkenstock the new director at the Ludwig Forum, and Till-Holger Borchert new director of the Suermondt-Ludwig Museum.

The three not only now share the Ludwig name, but also a great love of art. But what drives them on and fuels their passion? Which themes and subjects from art and culture – and beyond – are close to their heart? What are their plans for their respective institutions? How do they see Aachen, both as a key location of culture and a new home? And what about the outstanding collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig? Carla Cugini, Eva Birkenstock, and Till-Holger Borchert will be joined by Christian Rein, the arts editor at the Aachener Zeitung and Aachener Nachrichten.

Get to know Carla Cugini, Eva Birkenstock, and Till-Holger Borchert during an exclusive evening organized by the AZ/AN Friends Association in cooperation with the Ludwig Forum and the Friends of the Ludwig Forum.

Admission is free. Registration by e-mail is requested.

Charlemagne Prize Supporting Program: Lecture by Egon Ramms

On Friday 20th May 2022, Egon Ramms, retired General and former Commander of the Allied Joint Force Command in Brunssum will hold a lecture under the title War. And Peace? Europe in a Changing Era at the Ludwig Forum Aachen.

Did the West let Ukraine down? What should Germany, Europe and NATO have done differently in recent years? What could an appropriate foreign and security policy look like in the future for the EU? And how do we deal with Russia in this process? What does Putin’s war mean for other neighbouring countries in the long term, and what role does Belarus, the home country of the 2022 Charlemagne Prize winners, play? These questions require professional expertise and an objective discussion.

Retired General Egon Ramms was Commander of the Allied Joint Force Command in Brunssum, the Netherlands, from 2007 to 2010, making him one of the highest-ranking German soldiers in NATO. After the Russian attack on Ukraine began, he regularly analysed the current situation in German media. The lecture will be followed by a discussion between Ramms and the Chairman of the Charlemagne Prize Board of Directors, Dr. Jürgen Linden, moderated by former AZ/AN Editor-in-Chief, Prof. Bernd Mathieu.

The Letters of Rosemary & Bernadette Mayer, 1976-1980

Two sisters, an artist and a poet, describe the contours of their lives among New York’s artistic avant-garde through an intimate collection of letters.

This collection of the correspondence between artist Rosemary Mayer (1943–2014) and poet Bernadette Mayer (born 1945) occurs between the years of 1976 and 1980, a period of rich creativity in New York’s artistic avant-garde, and one which includes the development of major bodies of work by the two women. Rosemary Mayer was creating sculptures, watercolors, books and “temporary monuments” from weather balloons and snow, while Bernadette Mayer was working on some of her best-known publications, including the book-length poem Midwinter Day and the poetry collection The Golden Book of Words. Spanning the worlds of Conceptual art, Postminimalism, feminism, the New York School, Language poetry and more, these letters elucidate the bonds of sisterhood through intimate exchanges about art, relationships and everyday life.

HUSBANDRY’S PINK THREAD

On the occasion of Belgian Pride, WIELS invites you to follow the pink thread of queer references in Kasper Bosmans’ exhibition through an interview, a video and other news!
In May and June, join us for a series of workshops, evening events and talks!

PLAN YOUR VISIT
In Husbandry, references to queerness make their first explicit appearance in Kasper Bosmans’ practice. He explains why in the extract below, taken from the book presentation of Dovetail in response to a question from one of its contributors, Martin Germann.

Each month, WIELS invites you to discover details the Berserk mural through a specially dedicated web platform. NEW! In this last video, Inès-Gabrielle Tourlet, art historian, talks to us about transformation, cross-dressing, protection and the search of an ideal.

BERSERK IN DETAIL
In his work, Bosmans connects multiple references. Home is dear, home is best is the perfect example. This sand painting is inspired by the tale Zeus and the turtle and by the book Queer space: architecture and same-sex desire (1997) by Aaron Betsky. In a gesture of self-mockery, the artist depicts himself as the pink spider ready to devour his prey (the visitor).

GENERATION BRUSSELS

As every year since 2018, our exhibition Generation Brussels is back for its 5th edition with the purpose to highlight a selection of young and Brussels-based artists not yet represented by a gallery.

Maud Salembier, this year’s curator, has articulated the exhibition around the notion of Care, as an increasing number of young artists are developing their practices around that concept. The Generation Brussels show will explore the interactions between the hand that gives, looks after and repairs with a world of visible and invisible flows, vulnerability and sometimes happy accidents.

Selected artists: Maya de Mondragon, Marion Séhier, Shen Ozdémir, Diwana Schrauwen, Jacques di Piazza, Charlotte Lavandier, Veerle Melis, Silja Hubert, Mary Szydlowska, Spa for spirits, Collectif Muesli, Anaïs Chabeur
