In English

Congratulations, you have reached the end of the Internet.

With online interactions becoming more and more stale, taking place on only a handful of interconnected platforms, there is an increasing desire to venture towards other modes of experiencing the digital.

In order to imagine a new paradigm for our digital existence, this small symposium aims to explore the following questions:

Do digital technologies harbour untapped spiritual possibilities?
How are dreams and technology connected?
Does the digital lay bare new layers within the material?
What meaning do chance and surprise hold in an age of algorithmic prognosis?

Organised by Lynn Klemmer, artist in residence at Casino Display, as an extension of her exhibition, this colloquium invites an international panel of artists and thinkers to share their research and engage in a discussion with the artist.

Live attendance at Casino Display, 1, rue de la Loge, L-1945 Luxembourg

Q-O2 News :: July 2022

workspace for experimental music and sound art

post-residency performance
13 July – 18h – free
Alice Hui-Sheng Chang
Alice Hui-Sheng Chang is a sound improvisor, experimental vocalist, and experiential arts therapist from Taiwan. During her residency, Alice has recorded various in-site performances, and composed a series of works based on Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland”: poetic scores drawing from Alice’s experience of displacement, hallucinaton, and transformation. It is a reflection on how thinking frameworks shift with immediate context, influenced by language and social structures
Alice will also perform on 12 July at 20h30, at Avenue des Villas 31, 1060 Saint-Gilles (entrée & verre libre).

21 Tracks for the 21st Century: Dora Benyo
HART magazine and Q-O2 join forces with 21 Tracks for the 21st Century, a series of playlists to gear ourselves for our present century. We ask our guests: what music does this century need? As tonic, as engine-fuel, as rhythm, as common ground, as ballast? Each time, we invite one artist, thinker or musician to prepare a playlist of those sounds, songs and pieces of music that will best arm their listeners with the tools to approach what is left of this young century.
For this month’s edition, we invited painter and video and performance artist Dóra Benyó, who put together a two-part playlist featuring sounds from the Hungarian underground and pop scenes from the 60s to the 80s and beyond.

Opluchting na subsidiebeslissing

Selma Gurbuz

VERNISSAGE : « I Will Not Return to a Universe of Objects That Don’t Know Each Other » de Lynn Klemmer

vernissage

Vendredi 08.07.2022, de 18 h 00 à 21 h 00

I Will Not Return to a Universe of Objects That Don’t Know Each Other

Lynn Klemmer, artiste en résidence

Commissaire
Nadina Faljic

What’s in an artwork? Laatste dagen / Last days & Finissage: 01 > 17.07.2022

“The HISK in Ghent is in real trouble. Six months after the internationally renowned Higher Institute for Fine Arts opened a satellite space in the former Gosset tobacco factory in Molenbeek, the Flemish Minister of Education Ben Weyts let it be known that the place had ‘no unique added value’ and that its financing would be stopped. The result: a storm of protest by many artists who in the past saw their careers germinate there and are creating tomorrow’s heritage today. With its third alumni exhibition on the Gosset site, ‘What’s in an artwork?’, HISK once again makes it clear what its added value is.

Georgina Hill,

In a cowslip’s bell I lie.

Opening: July 15th,
6.00 –– 9.00 p.m

Exhibition continues until September 16th.

fluent is pleased to present In a cowslip’s bell I Lie, a solo exhibition by British artist Georgina Hill.

Taking Ariel’s verses in Shakespeare’s The Tempest as the title of the exhibition, Hill looks at the invisible impact of logistics and how it reveals the structural dimension of life and the systems it circulates through.

In the play, Ariel is presented as the airiest character, a spirit whose voice fluctuates in rhythm and movement. An invisible entity, whose subtle presence shifts the narrative. Aiming at a similar lightness, the two series of sculptures featured in this exhibition confront the commodified to the precarious, being its possible frictions a place for meanings to emerge. This in–between becomes a potentiality for the resilience of bodies and their interdependency, willing for an intimacy amid the violence of logistics, hyper-access and mobility in a white supremacist patriarchy.

Georgina Hill’s work is concerned with the interior processes of labour. She explores the intimacy generated in material structures as well as the inherent authoritarianism of such relations. She works in installation, video, drawing, and text.
With postgraduate study in English Literature at University College London, and a Masters in Fine Art at Goldsmiths University, London, she was also a student of Hito Steyerl at UdK Berlin. Her work has been shown at the Arnis Residency (Germany), Galerie Charraudeau (France), Seoul Biennale for Architecture and Urbanism (South Korea), Bulegoa z/b (Spain), Nida Art Colony (Lithuania), Art Night (UK), Museum of Photography (Germany), and Or Gallery (Canada), among others.

View this email in your browser

Beste lezer,

Op 8 juli om 20.00 u. opent What Are Men to Rocks And Mountains?

PERSPECTIVES:
What Are Men to Rocks and Mountains?
09.07.2022 – 09.10.2022
Openingstijden: donderdag t/m zondag 10.00 – 17.00 u
Van Oldenbarneveltstraat 63‑A, Nijmegen

Kunstenaars: Rocio Berenguer, Ingrid Burrington, Marjolijn Dijkman, Kordae Jatafa Henry, Nella Piatek, Melissa Schwarz, Louise Silfversparre

Curator: Lieke Wouters

Op woensdagavond 13 juli luisteren we samen met muziektherapeut Christina Santaka naar muziek terwijl we de tentoonstelling What Are Men to Rocks And Mountains? bekijken.

–––

On Wednesday evening, July 13th, we listen to music with music therapist Christina Santaka while viewing the What Are Men to Rocks And Mountains? exhibition.

What kind of feeling do the artworks evoke and which music goes with it? That is the approach of this program, where we listen to music together and use it as a starting point to talk about the exhibition. It is not necessary to know a lot about art or to have music in mind beforehand.

INTERACTIONS
Caucasian History Lesson
met Lado Darakhvelidze

16.07.2022 – 18.09.2022
Openingstijden: donderdag t/m zondag 10.00 – 17.00 u
Driekoningenstraat 16, Arnhem

Kunstenaar: Lado Darakhvelidze

Curator: Youri Appelo

Uitnodiging
Opening
An Interior Motion – Andrea Canepa
2 juli vanaf 16:30 uur
Met om 17:00 een performance

         AC NewsletterBeeld: Andrea Canepa
Ontwerp: Bardhi Haliti / Zuzana Kostelanská

Opening An Interior Motion
2 juli vanaf 16:30

21 Tracks for the 21st Century: Dora Benyo
HART magazine and Q-O2 join forces with 21 Tracks for the 21st Century, a series of playlists to gear ourselves for our present century. We ask our guests: what music does this century need? As tonic, as engine-fuel, as rhythm, as common ground, as ballast? Each time, we invite one artist, thinker or musician to prepare a playlist of those sounds, songs and pieces of music that will best arm their listeners with the tools to approach what is left of this young century.
For this month’s edition, we invited painter and video and performance artist Dóra Benyó, who put together a two-part playlist featuring sounds from the Hungarian underground and pop scenes from the 60s to the 80s and beyond.

intermission museum of art (ima) is proud to present specious reasoning, featuring the collaborative work of jeffrey martín + david mccormick which represents the fourth and final artist exchange in ima’s volume ii series. specious reasoning opens on 27 june and will be featured through 14 august 2022.

specious reasoning features the new work, BLACK FIDDLER, a collaborative video developed by martín and mccormick.  the 10 minute video features archival research, story, music and voiceover work by the collaborators and includes additional collaborations with beaux xavier (character artwork and animations) and lanese love (editor).

“plausible… but fallacious!  what if the real-life black fiddlers who played at monticello were super queer and engaged in over-the-top battles with other “family” bands?  it is, of course, a bit of historical (hysterical?) fiction, but the fiddlers of the scott and hemings families of monticello no doubt engaged in some music-making that was — over.  the.  top.

… the category is… black fiddle realness.

about ima

intermission museum of art was founded in 2020 by rose van mierlo and john ros, in response to the cultural, social, environmental, economic and political fissures that make themselves evermore present during times of crisis and put stress on accepted systems of operation.  ima provides a space for critical thinkers to respond to these moments of friction by investigating them as meaningful sites of production, instigating dialogues which will culminate in a public archive.

ima’s name references the question of open space: the flipping movement of a hand searching through archives, gaps in the pavement, performance interludes, tv-commercials, coffee breaks and silent pauses; all moments of unpoliced disruption that are typically un-institutional.  at its core, ima therefore proposes the museum as a site of uncertainty; a building without walls; a non-hierarchical collection of interdisciplinary narratives and voices; both a guest and a host; and an exercise in cross-pollination.  it resists the architectural premise of power that underwrites the white cube, democratizing the exhibition in terms of access. instead, its architectural premise is that of lateral networks; its vision decentralized and participatory.

The gallery of characters portrayed by Magnus Andersen in Readers Remedy could perfectly fit the definition of the flat characters described by E.M Foster. Opposed to the drama of the round characters, they are at once monolithic, decorative and comic. They exist on the canvas, but never shed their soothing looks. Caught in the anti-spectacular exercise of an indolent reading session or a midnight snack, they are violently deprived of any romantic seduction, hollowed out from the inside like cocktail fruits.

If until now Magnus Andersen drew the contours of a pastoral and folk imaginary almost touching the pastiche of the representations of a New Age Cornucopia, his painting abandons here any claim to an elsewhere. The banality of the scenes described is striking. Without any real temporal or geographical anchorage, only the graphic qualities of the painting remain. One could perhaps bring it closer to the Chicago Imagists and their bestiaries of cartoonish facies but in the era of The Simpsons and Mario Kart. Nonchalant and without apparent qualities, the scenes described shine only by their saturated colors. If each painting imagines its own museum, the one invented by the casualness of the three characters of Readers Remedy could very well be the sweet envelope of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown’s Children Museum in Houston. The equivalent of Willy Wonka‘s Bank of America-funded The Chocolate Factory, everything in its architecture defends the idea that icing is more important than sponge cake.

What do the avant-gardes eat? Magnus Andersen has turned away from the Cézanneque oranges of his early days to join the industrial sandwich of the abstract expressionists. With his painting of a brioche spread with butter and topped with a slice of cheddar cheese or his croque monsieur with its discreet charisma, he places himself in the lineage of painters like Robert Motherwell, Barnett Newman or Mark Rothko who made brioche bread the cornerstone of pictorial composition by producing abstract paintings on sandwiches in the cafeteria that they opened in 1948, The Sandwiches of the Artist. The sandwich as a motif and as a method of pictorial organization is here taken to its pinnacle. Each character in Readers Remedy is, in the manner of a Subway composition, caught between two pictorial slices and seasoned by the textures of the clothes and the sofa. The meat is of course the subject of the painting, which is either the alter ego of the artist or his friends.

In the manner of Wayne Thiebaud, Magnus Andersen paints like one cooks. Between a Dunkin’ Donuts-like pop, a faux-naïve halfway to real-funny and his neo-impressionism sprinkled with Nestlé realism, his painting is a nightmare for organic food aficionados. Readers Remedy or how the imagination of a painting can blossom between the couch of an artist’s studio and the glare of a Danish bakery in the early morning hours.
