World Building, 14th of June 2022 – 2pm to 6pm at Haus der Statistik

ABA
AIR Berlin Alexanderplatz

pleased to invite you to the workshop

“World Building”

at

Haus der Statistik

14th of June 2022 – 2pm to 6pm
Otto-Braun-Straße 70–72. 10178 Berlin.

Hosted by  Bernard Vienat, Mauro Hertig, Carina Erdmann, Alfatih

Why do we still work and for which social benefit? We invite you to participate in a worldbuilding experience, inspired by the principle of LARP (Live Action Role Play) to discover how the development of an alternative reality can transform the way we look at works of art and the aesthetic and political analysis that emerges from them.

What is the workshop?

Work Building is a 4-hour workshop that is part of a series of sustainability salons organized by ABA and the Swiss Embassy in Berlin. This workshop is a starting point in the creation of a traveling exhibition that links role-playing games and contemporary art exhibitions, allowing visitors to step into the shoes of another character through the works. The exhibition and the game explore the gap between collective utility and financial remuneration of work and invite us to collectively reflect on the conditions in which we work to produce goods and knowledge.

What are we doing?

The workshop will begin with a brief introduction to Larping as a method for embodying and envisioning alternative futures. Next, participants will engage in a character creation session with a series of selected artworks and game mechanics. The selected artworks are seen as starting points for questioning the motivations that drive people to work, while highlighting judgments about the different types of tasks that are necessary or not for a well-functioning society. They are also triggers that allow participants to be at the center of the viewing experience by creating a new character of their own.

LARP?

To act against the difficulty of envisioning a future different from the past, role-playing seeks to open up to specified forms of knowledge, to reconnect with our sensual and social bodies and to rethink the foundations of our social actions. Revisiting a world means looking at it again and again, from a new perspective. Worlding is therefore also the rearrangement of the world: it forces us to rethink our relationship with the environment and our own role within it.

Registration

The admission to the workshop is free within the limit of available seats. The registration is open until the 12th of June. You will receive additional information via the email address that you provide in the following form.

SALONS SUSTAINABILITY (WON)
World of Noon is a series of events initiated by Air Berlin Alexanderplatz. The title refers to the future perspective of the science fiction novel “World of Noon” by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky. The theme of these meetings is redefined each time through different approaches, various collaborations and changing locations. For 2022, ABA is initiating a new series in collaboration with the Embassy of Switzerland that will focus on Sustainability.

21 Tracks for the 21st Century: Dora Benyo
HART magazine and Q-O2 join forces with 21 Tracks for the 21st Century, a series of playlists to gear ourselves for our present century. We ask our guests: what music does this century need? As tonic, as engine-fuel, as rhythm, as common ground, as ballast? Each time, we invite one artist, thinker or musician to prepare a playlist of those sounds, songs and pieces of music that will best arm their listeners with the tools to approach what is left of this young century.
For this month’s edition, we invited painter and video and performance artist Dóra Benyó, who put together a two-part playlist featuring sounds from the Hungarian underground and pop scenes from the 60s to the 80s and beyond.

Albada Jelgersma Gallery is pleased to invite you to the opening of Passage II, a group exhibition curated by Mathieu Cherkit, with Marion Bataillard, Romain Bernini, Amélie Bertrand, Mireille Blanc, Mathieu Cherkit, Julia Cottin, Yann Lacroix, Thomas Lévy-Lasne, Maude Maris and Julien des Monstiers. The opening is June 11, from 5-7 pm and runs through July 16.

For this exhibition Mathieu Cherkit carefully selected a group of nine young painters that represent what is happening in French painting today. Although there is a wide variation in subject matter and technique, they share an approach that Cherkit finds representative of this generation. The paintings are often colorful and figurative, representing the visible world. With a human presence that is felt, rather than seen.

The painters in this exhibition are aged between 36 and 43. They came up at a time when painting, although still taught at academies, was often considered somewhat outdated. A new generation went against the mold and contributed to the resurgence of painting in France. A tendency that can be seen elsewhere as well, with artists using a medium that’s been around for many centuries in a way that speaks to today’s audiences.

Passage II follows the exhibition Passage, an initiative by Mathieu Cherkit that took place at Galerie Jean Brolly in Paris in 2021.

Zurich Art Weekend 2022 I Zollikerstrasse 249-251

Damien & The Love Guru

Installation view Vanessa Disler ‘Light Slepper’

Just a few miles away from Zollikerstrasse 249, where Disler’s envirornment is now situated, is the Urania Bunker, one of the largest civil defence bunkers in Switzerland. The upper floors of this sprawling complex currently operate as a multi-storey parking lot known as Urania Parking. The bunker was constructed in the early 1970s on the site of an extant WWII air raid shelter. But before construction of the Urania nuclear bunker began, the subterranean realm was occupied by a countercultural youth group who declared it outside of Swiss jurisdiction and renamed it the “Autonomous Republic Bunker”. In 1971 the local government raided the bunker and evicted the inhabitants. Photos taken before the crackdown capture the heady atmosphere of this short lived commune. These images show a mass of youths sitting on the floor, looking rebelliously at the camera. They are surrounded by murals that they have painted upon the concrete walls; an array of glyphs; spirals; lozenges, ankhs, a lemniscate and a wedjat eye.

Theory on Demand #43 – Edited by Ana Cristina Suzina & Thomas Tufte.

The Brazilian educator Paulo Freire (1921-1997) is one of the most important thinkers of the 21st Century, figuring among the most quoted authors in the fields of Education and Social Sciences all over the world. He is also a core reference to an infinite number of grassroots and activist initiatives globally. This book celebrates his birth centennial with a collection of 19 contributions from both experienced and young media and communication scholars and activists working in 11 countries. They reflect and debate Freire’s principles and ideas, revisiting their origins and interrogating their relevance to current challenges and struggles. The result can be summarized as a claim for affect as the core feature of social change and a tool for yielding resistance.

New Project: MORPHIC MINDS

Afbeelding
Morphic minds is a mercurial school exploring artificiality and intelligence, locality and cosmos, language and poetry. We address the poetic and metaphorical interplay between notions of mind/intelligence and artificiality/technology. An inquiry on existent philosophies of both terms (artificiality and intelligence), while looking at ways artists, poets, and/or sci-fi writers establish novel configurations that go beyond them. Check out our first posts:

The mind is an emergent event. Hereraclitus called it an enormous space whose boundaries, even by traveling along every path, could never be found out. Only by looking at the vasiform matter formations which are said to pre-condition its existence, such as tubes, dendrites, stems, peduncles, and complicated systems of innervation, one is mesmerized by the myriad operations and processes that pass through it. Stuck on the Platform

by GEERT LOVINK

We’re all trapped. No matter how hard you try to delete apps from your phone, the power of seduction draws you back. Doom scrolling is the new normal of a 24/7 online life. What happens when your home office starts to feel like a call center and you’re too fried to log out of Facebook? We’re addicted to large-scale platforms, unable to return to the frivolous age of decentralized networks. How do we make sense of the rising disaffection with the platform condition? Zoom fatigue, cancel culture, crypto art, NFTs and psychic regression comprise core elements of a general theory of platform culture. Geert Lovink argues that we reclaim the internet on our own terms. continue reading

RISO by RisoWiso, Arnhem.

This issue of Kunstlicht focuses not only on algorithms, but specifically on algorhythms, highlighting the temporal nature and order of technology through artistic interventions. The authors and artists featured in this issue specifically address the intersection between time and technology. Through their artworks and writings, we tune into the time of our bodies, the time of the internet, and to the histories and futures of our worlds.

During the Launch Evelyn Wan guides us through the questions and solutions raised throughout tthe issue. She is joined by Rosa Wevers and the artist group Utopia Syndicate. The latter will present the day after yesterday: a proposition.

Evelyn Wan is Assistant Professor of Media, Arts, and Society at the Department of Media and Culture Studies at Utrecht University. She teaches cultural theory, philosophy of science, performance practices, and cultural research methodologies. Her work on the temporalities and politics of digital culture and algorithmic governance is interdisciplinary in nature, and straddles media and performance studies, gender and postcolonial theory, and legal and policy research.

Rosa Wevers (MA) works as a PhD candidate and teacher in Gender Studies at Utrecht University. She analyses how contemporary art exhibitions confront visitors with critical perspectives on surveillance and engage them in strategies of resistance. In 2021, she curated the exhibition Face Value, in collaboration with IMPAKT and the Nederlands Film Festival.

Utopia Syndicate is a collective and a space emerging from a friendship and companionship between Madison Jolliffe and Tery Žeželj. It creates “utopian” experiences to shape the way we live with the world. It researches and investigates potentials for alternative futures that emerge from practices of new-hope and care. Utopia Syndicate is the host and nourisher of the artistic practice the day after yesterday.

First ever survey exhibition of Slavs and Tatars' printed matter works

EXPO
Slavs and Tatars – Лук Бук (Look Book)
02.07.2022 > 02.10.2022

EN –  Having started as an informal book club, the Berlin-based artist collective Slavs and Tatars have long seen notions of hospitality and commons building in the act of reading. As their practice has grown to include installations, sculptures, audio works, and film, the survey exhibition Лук Бук (Look Book) focuses for the first time on their printed matter works, claiming its rightful place at the top of the artists’ singular hierarchy.

Both the exhibition and accompanying survey publication are commissioned by the Frans Masereel Centrum, in collaboration with MGLC, Ljubljana; Hacer Noche, Oaxaca; and Distanz Verlag, Berlin.

RiverBed, 2017, wood, textile, 81 × 250 × 170 cm. Installation view at Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Berlin.

SAVE THE DATE
Opening 02.07.2022
Welkom vanaf 14u – Welcome from 2 pm!

EN – An exceptional exhibition deserves an exceptional program and audience ! Besides guided walks by Slavs and Tatars through the exhibition, there will be a live DJ performance by Lutto Lento and a culinary workshop by Yuliya Sorokina. Keep an eye on our website for the full program.

Save the date: Social Dissonance

Social Dissonance

with Mattin

Thursday, June 9th, 7:00 p.m

Artist, musician and theorist Mattin presents Social Dissonance, published by Urbanomic, and will perform the related performative score, Disonancia Social.

Mattin’s work addresses the social and economic structures of experimental music production through performances, recordings and writing. From this premise, he reflects on social dissonance as the discrepancy between what we do (buying and selling goods) and what we think of ourselves as non-commodified entities. By shifting the emphasis from the sonic to the social, we discover dissonance as the territory and condition we already inhabit.

Through his practice and writing, Mattin explores performative forms of estrangement as a way of coping structural alienation. His work has been presented in festivals such as Performa (NYC), Club Transmediale (Berlin), Arika (Glasgow) and universities such as Cal Arts, Bard College, Paris VIII and Goldsmiths. He participated in documenta14 in Athens and Kassel.

LILIANE GIRAUDON

Splendid Isolation SMAK opening Mei 2022 Foto Anton Coene 24
