post-residency performance
2 August – 20h-22h – free
Rebecca Lane & Clara de Asis
Sound performance for flutes, synthesizer, percussion, field recordings & silent whistles.
Distances Bending is an ever-expanding process – a building up, distilling and mirroring of materials particular to each artist’s sonic practices, responding to and inhabiting a space over multiple hours or days. During the residency, sonic and visual materials have been developed to inform an environmental system within which the performance takes place, but  which has a life force or choreography of its own. Developing a repeated time structure, a temporal loop that is altered by upwardly expanding frequencies (plucked from the harmonic series), instruments (whose size, timbre and shape correspond to these frequencies), various filtering bodies (found & electronic) and changing light, they aim to create a subtle space where perception can be transformed.

21 Tracks for the 21st Century: Dora Benyo
HART magazine and Q-O2 join forces with 21 Tracks for the 21st Century, a series of playlists to gear ourselves for our present century. We ask our guests: what music does this century need? As tonic, as engine-fuel, as rhythm, as common ground, as ballast? Each time, we invite one artist, thinker or musician to prepare a playlist of those sounds, songs and pieces of music that will best arm their listeners with the tools to approach what is left of this young century.
For this month’s edition, we invited painter and video and performance artist Dóra Benyó, who put together a two-part playlist featuring sounds from the Hungarian underground and pop scenes from the 60s to the 80s and beyond.

While the term originates in psychiatry, euphoric recall can also be applied to other spheres to describe the phenomenon whereby episodes from the past become catalysts for creative potential. Euphoric recall can be used to describe Vanessa Disler summoning the artistic anima of Martin Disler (1949-1996) the Swiss artist whose legacy has been a touchstone for her for several years. Now remembered predominately as a proponent of the Neue Wilde. Martin Disler’s work typifies how many artists in the early 1980’s attempted to sidestep what they saw as an excessively cerebral and etiolated approach to making art. A self proclaimed outsider, Disler believed art should be intense, intimate and spontaneous. Vanessa draws upon Martin’s visual vocabulary while sharing his aspiration to make paintings imbued with personal, historical and archetypal meaning. She too is drawn to the visceral immediacy of expressionism and her engagement with painting is exuberant and sensual. There is a palpable jouissance to Vanessa’s application of paint; works are distinguished by rapid, vigorous brushwork created via spontaneous gestures. Like her predecessor, Vanessa uses archetypal symbols in her work, demonstrated here in the imagery on each side of the painted structure; the depictions of day and night; the eternity loop; the square spiral and patterning resembling rusted chainmail fencing. Both share a propensity for using language in their work, as highlighted here in the three steel ‘gates’ installed in the garden. (excerpt of the exhibition text by Padraic E. Moore)

Closing event for Koen Kloosterhuis – Spaghetti Rain
Turning to Dust and Bones, part 2

Sunday 31 July, 17 -19 hrs

Bar open: 17 hrs
Commissioned text by Çağlar Köseoğlu
Performance by Mica Pan at 17.30 hrs:

“There is such a thing as remembering without recognising the memory in it,” he remarked.
                             —George MacDonald, Lilith: A Romance

But for in the past these differences conceal contemporaneousness: how are we to distinguish difference in time from difference in space?
                             —Richard Fortey, Life

Mica Pan is interested in the subconscious, the idea of “nothingness” in contrast with “something-ness”. As a site-specific performance artist, different structures of architecture and spaces often serve as a material and starting point for her idea to manifest into a form, while everyday actions and objects often appear as a medium to merge with space in a minimalistic way. She aims to create a subtle intersection of narrative and feeling/sensation in a space, allowing the audience to enter a realm where they can get in touch with their own subconscious in an immersive atmosphere and be aware of the now-ness of the presence.

Çağlar Köseoğlu was invited to write an autonomous piece of work in response to the work of Koen Kloosterhuis. It will be available at the space in print and published on the website of P/////AKT from Sunday onwards. Köseoğlu studied philosophy and literature in the Netherlands, Turkey and the US. He received his second MA in Aesthetics and Politics at California Institute of the Arts on a Fulbright scholarship. He is a Lecturer at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam as well as Erasmus University College, where he teaches literature, politics and postcolonial theory.

Turning to Dust and Bones (April 2022 – April 2023) is a series of six consecutive solo exhibitions loosely dealing with the subconscious, memory and the traces of being uprooted. It is featuring Anders Dickson, Koen Kloosterhuis, Kristina Sedlerova-Villanen, Aslan Goisum, Giulia Cenci and Rodrigo Hernández.
The public program is moderated by DIG – the Internet Guide of literature magazine De Gids, with editors Asha Karami, in charge of selecting contributors for additional texts and events, and Fabienne Rachmadiev, who is closely following the program in order to write the central essay for the series.

Sarah Pichlkostner – Fill O
David Dale Gallery, Glasgow
Opening: Saturday 6 August 4 – 8pm

Until 20 August, Thu 12 – 6 pm & Fri – Sat 12 – 8pm
Bar Dee Dee will be open during the exhibition opening and on Fridays and Saturdays 2 – 8pm

Sarah Pichlkostner creates sculptures and environments through which she investigates the representation of invisible processes: the transmission of energy, the passage of time, and our psychological responses to materials and things. Or as she puts it: when material is brought to an object, i.e. is made into one, and the function of this object is continuously developing over time, then the object is ultimately reflecting us.

Fill O is the second part of an organisational exchange with P/////AKT, Amsterdam, with whom Sarah Pichlkostner realised the solo exhibition If the moon was a cookie in 2018. The first part of the exchange, I didn’t think it would turn out this way took place at P/////AKT from 13th November – 19th December 2021.

Online Screening
Empathic Creatures (2018), Barbara Kapusta, 6 mins, 43 secs
Selected by Sarah Pichlkostner and viewable on our website for the duration of the exhibition

Commissioned Writing
A written response to Fill O by Clarinda Tse will be readable on our website in August.

Koen Kloosterhuis – Spaghetti Rain – on view until 31 July

Koen Kloosterhuis, Spaghetti Rain
Turning to Dust and Bones, part 2

Closing event: 31 July, 17 – 19 hrs
26 June – 31 July 2022
Thu – Sun, 14 – 18 hrs

Three reanimated crows, inspired by their plastic lookalikes placed in gardens to scare away pigeons, and animatronics found in haunted house rides, ‘greet’ the visitor as they cross the threshold and wander through the exhibition space; turning them into an intruder. Within the space, the crows create a domain of privacy and secrecy that is inherent to most backyards. The electronics, attached on the outside of the birds instead of being concealed within, function as external organs meant to force the stuffed crows to speak. It is a single voice, belonging to one crow, that echoes its way through the second and has almost disappeared by the time it reaches the third.

Scattered across the floor lie chunks of concrete. A wing, a head, a hand, an elephant’s trunk; the remains of a carefully dissected gathering of garden statues, originally collected by my father. Fragments of bodies that are endlessly reproducible. Clones and copies not bound to time or space—reduced to decoration, degraded to kitsch.

Strands of spaghetti covered in red sauce have fallen on top of the debris. We once had a neighbor that would feed his leftover spaghetti to the crows living near our street. In the sky, the birds would fight each other over the bloody scraps, sometimes accidentally dropping them into my father’s backyard, marking the concrete tiles and stone statues with yellow strings and splashes of red.

Backed into the corner, slightly elevated from the floor, stands the untreated and vulnerable garden house that, instead of providing a solution to survive in an inhospitable environment—like its predecessor the log cabin—has become a place associated with leisure, relaxation and daydreaming. A sanctuary from the outside world placed on the edge of the domestic sphere; a room at the end of the garden.

Spaghetti Rain marks the second episode of Turning to Dust and Bones, a series of solo exhibitions by six artists that is loosely evolving with the mind, memory and a sense of being uprooted.

Tilde ~ 1934 ~ on view until 31 July

Tilde ~ 1934
Polina Kanis, Pejvak (Felix Kalmenson and Rouzbeh Akhbari)

26 June – 31 July 2022
Thu – Sun, 14 – 18 hrs

Curator: Masha Domracheva
Production and technical support: Matteo Casarin, Brian McKenna, Alex Fischer

The exhibition explores two utopian botanical projects both initiated in 1934

The work of artistic duo Pejvak is telling the story of an expedition to Japanese-occupied Manchuria led by artist, scientist and mystic Nikolay Roerich and commissioned by the US Secretary of Agriculture Henry Wallace. Roerich and Wallace had a double agenda. Wallace regarded Roerich as his spiritual leader and secretly supported the painter’s mission to establish a pan-Buddhist society based on high spirituality and cooperative labor, known as the Sacred Union of the East. Roerich in turn was supposed to collect drought-resistant plants that would be able to stabilise and restore American soil.

The work of Polina Kanis explores an ideological project accidentally started by Soviet scientist Fyodor Zorin in the botanical garden of Sochi. He planted a wild lemon tree and then grafted other citrus fruits onto its crown. A tradition grew: throughout decades prominent international figures added grafts of different citrus varieties to the tree. Today there are more than 630 of these additional shoots, representing 167 different countries and a utopian vision of political and ecological symbiosis.

So, a recently developed branch of science — breeding — became extremely important for the rise of the agricultural sectors of the world economy, and two so called ‘camps’ —USA and USSR in particular. That is not a coincidence as ideas about new forms of life often appear on the ruins of societies collapsed after a recent crises, when they are about to resurrect, and the new world is to be built. But what new world were supposed to be built? What was given a start at the same time in 1934 in the world politically and socially? And what those visionary projects, explored in the exhibition, mean to us today? Can we consider them utopias today, knowing that they were echoing imperialist logic? And lastly, how shall we reconsider the concept of utopia within decolonial thinking?

The exhibition was first opened on May 13 within Amsterdam Art Week, and supposed to function until June 19, but due to unpredictable organisational issues with the space it had to be closed the day after. Soon after these events, P/////AKT team has kindly offered to reopen the show in P/////AKTPOOL.

edition of 5, published by the artist

P/////AKT is proud to present Again, (Monochrome) a new edition by alumn Raphaël Langmair:

He finds an object and makes a replica, although differently from its original. In the past he used ink of an octopus for making one in print of that same octopus. In another work he takes a fruit market crate and rebuilds it into a triangle shaped one. Recently one morning he burnt his toast. He took another slice of bread in order to make a toast again. While waiting he decided to burn deliberately the next one as well that brought him two burnt toasts that he turned into a piece, hence the title of this edition: Again.

Sie schreibt für The Guardian und Vogue und hat mit Queer Intentions: A (Personal) Journey Through LGBTQ+ Culture und We Can Do Better Than This: 35 Voices on the Future of LGBTQ+ Rights zwei Bücher veröffentlicht.

Weitere Informationen: https://rb.gy/mfxeqs

Brussels Gallery Weekend celebrates 15th anniversary!

SAVE THE DATE

BGW goes big to celebrate 15th anniversary!

© HV Photography. Courtesy the artist and rodolphe janssen, Brussel

From 8-11 September, 46 art galleries around Brussels will be open to the public as part of the Brussels Gallery Weekend. For its 15th anniversary the BGW has a special programme to match, with a unique main venue in the former printing plant of the National Bank of Belgium, the perfect setting for large format sculptures.

Throughout the long weekend, Brussels will be buzzing with exhibitions, performances, and installations. This fifteenth edition of BGW will have 46 galleries participating, and also a brand new concept: a central focal point in the prestigious surroundings of L’Imprimerie – a former printing plant. And of course we mustn’t forget the traditional “off” programme, the “Generation Brussels” exhibition, different talks, and more to be announced later.

PARTICIPATING GALLERIES : Almine Rech, Arcade, Archiraar Gallery, Ballon Rouge, Baronian, Belgian Gallery Brussels, Bernier/Eliades, Clearing, Damien & The Love Guru, Dauwens & Beernaert Gallery, dépendance, didier Claes, Galeria Jaqueline Martins, Galerie de la Béraudière, Galerie Dys, Galerie Felix Frachon, Galerie Greta Meert, Galerie La Forest Divonne, Galerie Nathalie Obadia, Gladstone, Harlan Levey Projects, Hopstreet Gallery, Irène Laub Gallery, Jan Mot, La Maison De Rendez-Vous, La Patinoire Royale | Galerie Valérie Bach, La peau de l’ours, Maniera, Marra\Nosco, Maruani Mercier, Meessen De Clercq, Mendes Wood DM, Michel Rein, Montoro12 Gallery, Nino Mier, Nosbaum Reding, Pierre Marie Giraud, rodolphe janssen, Rossicontemporary, Schönfeld Gallery, Sorry We’re Closed, Spazio Nobile, Stems Gallery, Templon, Waldburger Wouters, Xavier Hufkens.

L’Imprimerie: the perfect backdrop for the “Sculpture Factory” exhibition

This year, the heart of the Gallery Weekend can be found in the very centre of Brussels, in the former printing plant of the Belgian national bank. A modernist building measuring over 20,000 square metres, built in 1950 and and recently acquired for redevelopment by 3D Real Estate and Burco Europe. Made available on a temporary basis, this emblematic space will host various talks, a Duvel bar, Lillet and Ceder bars, and numerous projects and performances including the “Generation Brussels” and “Sculpture Factory” exhibitions. With the support of Art Brussels, the space will also host a unique selection of large format works put forward by participating galleries.

Generation Brussels!

For the fifth year running, the “Generation Brussels” exhibition will shine a spotlight on a range of artists who live and work in Brussels. Twelve artists including art students, young graduates, up-and-coming names as well as some more experienced artists whose work explores the theme of ‘care’. “In a world controlled by visible and invisible forces – at times limiting, and sometimes leading to happy coincidences – the hand that gives, heals, or repairs, the word that soothes, or the ear that listens, nature reimagined or disguised, as well as space as a vessel for minuscule signs of change, can inspire surprising processes,” explains Maud Salembier art historian and curator of the exhibition.

On the Sunday evening, one of these artists will be awarded the Prix Centre/Komett, the first edition of a prize resulting from a collaboration between the Centre Wallonie-Bruxelles/Paris and the KOMMET association based in Lyon.

OFF PROGRAM : Ada Ventura, La Centrale, Fondation CAB, Cloud Seven, Globe Aroma, JAP, La Loge, LaVallée, Musée Juif de Belgique, SB34 Clovis + Société, WIELS, 10N.

”You are listening to ABA’s Air Salon on Colaboradio, broadcasting on 88,4 MHz in Berlin 90,7 MHz in Potsdam.” My name is Lieven Lahaye, I’m an artist-in-residence at Air Berlin Alexanderplatz.

This is a radio show about the writer Duncan Smith, the introduction is an abridged version of ‘Impressed’, a text I wrote in 2021 and originally published in Catalog issue 17.

Writer Duncan Smith (1954-1991) excels at making wild connections.

His essay, ‘Everybody wants exposure’ builds on the speculative relationship between the process of developing photographs and fading denim jeans.

‘An interpretation of Elvis’ car-giving’ talks about exactly that: Elvis’ habit to give out Cadillacs and the interpretation of the name ‘Cadillac’ as a virtual rebus of events in Elvis’s life: ‘cad’: 50s slang for a bad boy, ‘ill’: ill and ‘lac’: lack.

Throughout ‘On the current symbolic status of oil’ he zooms in on the word ‘tar’ and the anagrams arts/tars/star, they “are crucial to the symbols that determine an identification in our culture.”

His work was published in issues of Artforum, BOMB magazine, Flash Art, the Semiotext(e) reader ‘Polysexuality’ (in the chapter ‘soft sex’) and the fall 1980 issue of FILE Megazine.

He wrote essays for the artist’s monographs of Peggy Cyphers, Brett De Palma, Alain Jacquet, and Roberto Juarez.

He wrote extensively about Elvis’ image and Elvis’ imitators – or ‘duplicators’ – in the book he co-authored with Diego Cortez, ‘Private Elvis’.

In an unpublished text, ‘Evil’ he wrote about disco lyrics and how they predicted the Aids crisis, as well as commented on it. He talks in particular about the lyrics to Electric Dreams, Gloria, In the name of love, Circles, Souvenir.

He played in the 1978 Eric Mitchell film ‘Kidnapped’. He appears throughout but does most of his talking around the 26 minute mark when he’s engaged in a conversation about speech, violence and ‘newness’.

He’s listed in the credits for the 1980 Eric Mitchell film ‘Underground USA’ as ‘the shrink’. He shows up in the origin story of the graffiti-centric ‘Fun Gallery’.

In ‘the city is our canvas’, Fun Gallery founder Patti Astor says “I always say that the beginning of the Fun Gallery was when I met Fab 5 Freddy in 1981. I was starring in my punk rock spectacular, ‘Underground USA’ […] Fab 5 Freddy dragged his homies, including Futura, to see the movie and, after that, we met.”

She continues in a 2012 interview:

“I think it was… I was really hung over, I remember… Duncan Smith, who was a poet-philosopher, was having a big party at his loft for the 100th birthday of Stéphane Mallarmé, the poet. He was serving vodka and cucumber sandwiches.”

With Edit DeAk, Duncan Smith interviewed graffiti artists Futura and Zephyr for the catalog of a 1983 exhibition at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam.

He published a collection of essays, ‘The age of oil’

He died from AIDS in 1991. His work is not widely known. He, along with a generation, died, their development cut short, leaving a legacy that is often difficult to contain.

Much of the available information on Duncan Smith was gathered in an extensive article, written by poet and critic Raphael Rubinstein and posted to this website ‘The Silo’ in August 2017.

The first sentence reads:

“The near invisibility, online as well as off, of writer Duncan Smith (1954-1991) is a stark reminder of how thoroughly information can go missing, or never emerge at all”

Installation view ‘Lucy Raven: Another Dull Day’, WIELS, Brussels, 2022

In this exclusive podcast, Lucy Raven talks with producer and drummer Deantoni Parks about the compelling sonic treatment of the two video works on display at WIELS Demolition of a Wall (Album 2) and Ready Mix.

Art historian Philippe Pirotte recently came to WIELS to discuss an unrealised project of Lucy Raven that served as the genesis of Another  Dull Day.

The title Another Dull Day was borrowed from George Herriman’s Krazy Kat comic (1913-1944) depicting a love triangle between a mouse, a cat and a dog. Their circular chase plays out in the iconic landscapes of the Western United states.

Tomorrow: Georgina Hill, In a cowslip’s bell I lie

Georgina Hill,

In a cowslip’s bell I lie.

Opening: Friday July 15th,
6.00 –– 9.00 p.m

Exhibition continues until September 16th.

fluent is pleased to present In a cowslip’s bell I Lie, a solo exhibition by British artist Georgina Hill.

Taking Ariel’s verses in Shakespeare’s The Tempest as the title of the exhibition, Hill looks at the invisible impact of logistics and how it reveals the structural dimension of life and the systems it circulates through.

In the play, Ariel is presented as the airiest character, a spirit whose voice fluctuates in rhythm and movement. An invisible entity, whose subtle presence shifts the narrative. Aiming at a similar lightness, the two series of sculptures featured in this exhibition confront the commodified to the precarious, being its possible frictions a place for meanings to emerge. This in–between becomes a potentiality for the resilience of bodies and their interdependency, willing for an intimacy amid the violence of logistics, hyper-access and mobility in a white supremacist patriarchy.

Georgina Hill’s work is concerned with the interior processes of labour. She explores the intimacy generated in material structures as well as the inherent authoritarianism of such relations. She works in installation, video, drawing, and text.
With postgraduate study in English Literature at University College London, and a Masters in Fine Art at Goldsmiths University, London, she was also a student of Hito Steyerl at UdK Berlin. Her work has been shown at the Arnis Residency (Germany), Galerie Charraudeau (France), Seoul Biennale for Architecture and Urbanism (South Korea), Bulegoa z/b (Spain), Nida Art Colony (Lithuania), Art Night (UK), Museum of Photography (Germany), and Or Gallery (Canada), among others.
