From 8.09 onwards, you can come and discover for yourself the work of Didier Vermeiren on no fewer than two floors, from two disciplines: sculpture and photography.

OPENING: INSTRUMENTAL

Shimabuku’s work turns our view of daily life on its head, enabling us to see things from a new perspective, infused with surreal humour and playful beauty. Taking various forms – from transformed objects to actions documented on video, often accompanied by short poetic texts – Shimabuku’s engaging projects reveal his curiosity about the world and awaken ours.

Sound Without Music – prélude

Get Out
Come Back

Stay Away

These 3 phrases were a staple refrain, and textual image, of Richard Nonas. While often seen, and most commonly interpreted as “Get out, Stay away, Come back”, the 3 phrases were endlessly interchangeable to Nonas, creating multiple variations and putting linear thought into doubt. The viewer's gaze bounces between the words resulting in many different interpretations of reality. In the same way, the sculptures of Nonas play with the manipulation of space and the perception of it. The pieces change the space around them making it vibrant and kinetic so that they seem to engage in an endless dialogue between the empty and the filled.

Nonas’s deeply sensitive work speaks to both the intellect and the gut. The idea of place, whether in the form of buildings or objects, shifts our perception of the world and the world itself. He is not only a sculptor but rather a sculptor of space, atmosphere and consciousness. This is why he never considered himself a minimal artist. His work is that of constant, obsessive and permanent research arising out of our daily lives. For Nonas, the choices he made when filling space were always less made by aesthetic decisions than by elemental decisions about the “rightness”, the ethics of the intrusion he was making. He believed sculptures must change both the mental and physical space and must change the world.

LMNO are presenting a new personal exhibition by the Detanico/Lain duo.

Angela Detanico and Rafael Lain have collaborated with LMNO since its inception 6 years ago.

Detanico/Lain’s works interpret our knowledge in fields such as the sciences and mathematics, and also literary references, thereby obtaining intensely varied aesthetic registers. Since 2001 their works have tackled themes linked to time, space, memory, language and history. In this, their third personal exhibition with LMNO, the artists address questions linked to landscape, whether natural or cultural. This new series of works on paper entitled ‘Clouds’ is based on the principle of illusion. The works proposed play on perception between word and image and suggest a two-pronged reading, between form and meaning. Born out of a public commission for the Tour du Fanal at the MUCEM in Marseille, this
work has been turned by the artists into a less monumental, but equally powerful domestic scale version. Like a pattern not unlike a voice’s range in Persévérance music, those works on blue-ground paper unveil a raft of white letters creating both the shape of a cloud, but also a word.

The force of the work resides in the dynamic interaction between language and image. The relationship between what you see, what you read and the interpretation you give it.

Angela Detanico and Rafael Lain have worked together for almost twenty years. They quickly imposed themselves on the international art scene thanks to a subtle reflection on the conventional modes of representation that surround us. thus pursuing a reflection on the role of language and its symbolic and physical place within our societies.

Oscillating between rudimentary technique and advanced technology, their pieces take forms as diverse as the letter, the word, the still image, the animation, the sound and the installation.Born respectively in 1974 and 1973 in Brazil, they live and work in Paris.

Didier Vermeiren: Double Exposition – WIELS

Didier Vermeiren
Double Exposition

Opening
Thursday September 8
6 pm – 11pm

September 9, 2022 ⏤ January 1, 2023

Didier Vermeiren, Solide géométrique #9, 2006, tainted poster, stained wood (215,5 x 135 x 135 cm)

Double Exposition, the first major retrospective of Didier Vermeiren (1951) in Brussels since 1987, presents a broad selection of sculptures and photographs made by the artist between 1973 and 2022. This exhibition is accompanied by a publication that includes two key texts by Michel Gauthier and Susana Gállego Cuesta, confirming Vermeiren’s key position in the history of European sculpture.

Embracing what Michel Gauthier calls ‘the Brancusian revolution’, and following certain lines of questioning set out by conceptual art and minimal art – both flourishing at the start of Vermeiren’s artistic career – in the late 1970’s Vermeiren began by putting the question of the pedestal at the very centre of his practice, working on the complex relationship between sculpture and this traditional element of its presentation. This was the start of ‘looking for the base and the present’ in the course of which, step by step, in Vermeiren’s work the pedestal established its ‘sculptural destiny’, to borrow Michel Gauthier’s terminology. At play here was the relationship to the floor, to space and place, but also to the entire history of sculpture. This is an approach which the artist illustrated later by stating that Carl Andre showed him Brancusi, who showed him Rodin, who showed him in turn Carpeaux, and so on, back through art history.

In the manner of Rodin, who took advantage of the possibilities afforded by the procedure of casting, Vermeiren brings reproduction into the very heart of the creative process: replicas, duplications, inversions link the works with one another in time and space, and direct our gaze towards a plurality of lines of force. This plastic dynamism is equally present in the photographic research carried out by Vermeiren from their beginning. Approaching photography in the early stages of his career with purely documentary intentions, then showing sculptures in constant metamorphosis by multiplying the points of view, he progressively integrated photographs into his creative process.

Vermeiren’s articulation between sculpture and photography unveils a ‘methodolgy of looking’ where photography is the ‘discourse of the method’, to borrow a formulation by Susana Gállego Cuesta in her contribution to the publication. This results in some fully-fledged photographic works, some sculptures which create photographs, and even some photographs which create sculptures, as shown among others by Double exposition (1990), which gives the exhibition its title, of which the artist averred that it showed ‘a sculpture which doesn’t exist in a place which doesn’t exist’.

With more than 35 sculptures and just as many photographs installed on the second and third floors of WIELS, this rigorous articulation of the gaze by the sole process of exhibiting is underlined by the play of cross-references and by the circulation between the works from one floor to the other. The artist has avoided a chronological arrangement, or the grouping of works according to specific periods, though some works are presented in family groupings.

Curatorial Programme 2022 presenteert
super feelings

Emma Wolf-Haugh
Domestic Optimism

JEFF WALL

Opening

6pm – 9pm

Jeff Wall, Event, 2020, inkjet print (223,2 x 168,5 x 6,9 cm)
© Jeff Wall. Courtesy the artist and White Cube

Galerie Greta Meert is pleased to present Jeff Wall’s first exhibition at the gallery since 1991. This exhibition, which unfolds on all three floors of the gallery comprises both new and earlier photographs spanning the Canadian artist's career from the 1980s to the present.

From documentary and ‘near documentary’ photographs to the ambitious productions of his cinematographic pictures, Jeff Wall’s repertoire allows him to explore the in-betweens of picture-making granted by a prolonged observation of everyday life. Through his sustained engagement with the pictorial form of the tableau—from transparencies in lightboxes to silver gelatin prints—the artist continues to expand the notion of photography as art by simultaneously addressing its specificities and its complex kinship to other forms of art and means of depiction. As written by Aaron Peck, for Wall “photography becomes a way, through the legacy of the avant-garde, to further the project of the depictive arts, which, by an accident of their nature, document the spirit and details of the time in which a particular artwork is composed.”

FIELDGUIDES FOR A PRETERNATURALIST

Fieldguides for a Preternaturalist is a series of small chapbooks initiated by South African artist Wendy Morris. Combining historical and speculative research, the project is concerned with the missing narratives while approaching plants as archives and storytelling as method. It has as its focus the retrieving of a library of botanical-medicinal knowledge that might have informed Morris’s enslaved ancestor, Maaij Claesje of Angola, midwife in the Company Slave Lodge in Cape Town.

Kristina Sedlerova Villanen
MAIN COURSE
Turning to Dust and Bones, part 3

Opening: Saturday 10 September, 20-24 hrs
Until 16 October, Thu – Sun, 14 – 18 hrs

horizon is tilting with each propulsion of oars dragging the speculative transformations and arrangements behind. transfer will happen at the deepest if zeros will not bleed too much before.

stone boats, anatomy of numbers, towel, alienation from the present moment and perhaps an attempt to grasp the totality of the matter just a minute later. inert movement of layers (after a splash) are part of the large scale transaction. the subject of orange melts into the purple one.
future currency will corrupt the codes of today, even those covered with sun cream

/ she left for a swim after all

The work of Kristina Sedlerova Villanen (Finland, 1987) can be described as emotionally loaded transitions in perishable matter. She is interested in the inconsistency of human nature, the attraction of humankind towards building unequal systems, creating concepts and the need to believe in them. Working with geological sediments, poorly made degradable materials, immaterial sources and language deposits, she alters these raw materials and the information history they are loaded with, unfolding the structures behind hierarchies and ownership history of natural resources.

With a series of sculptural gestures, MAIN COURSE is examining its own name and internal and external relationships, mingling with the space of P/////AKT.

Sedlerova Villanen is a graduate of the Academy of the Fine Arts Master’s degree program in Sculpture and the Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture degree program in Scenography, both in Helsinki Finland. She has been exhibiting at Extra City Kunsthal Antwerp, Oksasenkatu 11 Helsinki, Park Tilburg, Outo Olo Helsinki, Art au Centre #3 Liège, Van Eyck Open Studios Maastricht, Kunsthalle Helsinki, Titanik Gallery Turku, MUU Kaapeli Gallery Helsinki, Eemil Art Museum Lapinlahti, Colombo Art Biennale, Colombo, FISAD 2015 Turin, Exhibition Laboratory Helsinki, Taiga-Space Saint Petersburg and Sorbus Gallery Helsinki among others. She is currently based between Helsinki and Brussels.

P/////AKTPOOL is hosting Mutter

Mutter presents Janne Schimmel
Modders and Poachers

Opening: Saturday 10 September, 20-24 hrs
Until 16 October, Thu – Sun, 14 – 18 hrs

Until the summer of 2023, and expanding the horizon to the future beyond, P/////AKT will be closely collaborating with some of Amsterdam’s youngest and finest. A celebration of The Initiative, of its dedicated organizers and of the many many talented artists that they (re)present and care for. We will talk, think, share experiences and insights – connive why not – and see what makes The Initiative tick. For starters our former P/////AKTPOOL space is put to new use by hosting initiative-initiated projects. After Tilde’s kick-off (1934, curated by Masha Domracheva) it’s now Mutter’s turn.

Mutter is a newly open contemporary art platform based in Amsterdam set up in the communal event space formerly known as filmhouse De Lange Adem, run by three of the inhabitants of the Ruychstraat 295 t/m 301. They will present the work of Antwerp based artist Janne Schimmel, who deconstructs existing hardware and technological devices to reimagine what technology is and our relationships with it.

P/////AKTSALON: Charlott Markus

Charlott Markus
Some Things Bleak

Opening: Saturday 10 September, 20-24 hrs
Until 16 October, Thu – Sun, 14 – 18 hrs

Some Things Bleak is a publication about seeing versus not seeing, about gender, class and climate, a work about representation and reproduction. In short, a vehicle for perception and togetherness. It is more of an artwork than an actual book. A hardcover that contains loose sheets, which all have been folded into separate folders. Folders that can be democratically taken out and be used as separate artworks. Three colors give the publication its identity, white, black and blue, which are combined in both paper choices and in different layers of ink, transparent and opaque alike.

Charlott Markus will be present in the P/////AKTSALON during the opening on Saturday 10 September,  inviting anyone who wants to have a talk or a private reading.

Texts by Charlott Markus and Sophia Seawell
Designed by Hans Gremmen
Some Things Bleak is published by Fw:Books

This project is made possible with the kind support of AFK – Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst, Stichting Stokroos, Tijl Fonds via Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds, Stichting Jaap Hartenfonds and indirectly via Mondriaan fund.

New Publications by Benjamin Francis and Tessa Langeveld

Finally here: the publications by our final P/////AKTPOOLers Benjamin
Francis (Artez Arnhem, 2020) and Tessa Langeveld (AKI, 2020) who
participated in the program in 2021-22.

They were preceded by Stefan Cammeraat (HKU, 2015), Thomas Swinkels (St.
Joost Breda, 2015), Lisa Sudhibhasilp (GRA, 2016), Monique IJsseldijk (AKI,
2016), Emiel Zeno (HKU, 2017), Louis Richard (KABK, 2017), Brigitte Louter
(KABK, 2018), Pia Hinz (GRA, 2018), Laura Hogeweg (MAFAD, 2019) and David
Grønlykke (GRA, 2019).

P/////AKTPOOL Vol. 1 comprises the endeavours of all twelve participants of
this special program, who were each invited shortly after their bachelor
graduation. Each of them realised three consecutive presentations met with
special guests and produced a publication on the results of their project at
P/////AKT.

Now online: Sarah Pichlkostner – Fill O

INVITATION DIMANCHE 28 AOÛT MIDI – HENDRIK HEGRAY – SKULLFLOWER – OUVERTURE OFFICIELLE

HENDRIK HEGRAY

SKULLFLOWER, LIVE IN ANTWERPEN, 27.01.2007

31 August – 18h
Mark Vernon – Magneto Mori: Bruxelles / Brussels
Magneto Mori: Bruxelles / Brussels gathers people’s earliest or most vivid memories. Mark recorded these recollections direct to tape which was then buried in the ground for 2-weeks (along with magnets that partially erased the recordings) before being excavated and used as the basis for a new de-composition. The process is an analogy for the frailty of human memory and our ability to recall the past. – Come along to hear Mark discuss the process and listen to a work in progress version.

Circular Music by Jürg Frey, performed by Stan Maris, Florence Cats, Clara Lévy, Victor Guaita, Yannick Guédon, D’incise
Circular Music and Extended Circular Music are series of pieces with open instrumentation where the musical material becomes a space framing silence, rather than a timeline. The open score gives room for the performers to take both collective and individual decisions while the listeners are invited to wander with their ears through Frey’s ephemeral sound edifices.

21 Tracks for the 21st Century: Lawrence
HART magazine and Q-O2 join forces with 21 Tracks for the 21st Century, a series of playlists to gear ourselves for our present century. We ask our guests: what music does this century need? As tonic, as engine-fuel, as rhythm, as common ground, as ballast? Each time, we invite one artist, thinker or musician to prepare a playlist of those sounds, songs and pieces of music that will best arm their listeners with the tools to approach what is left of this young century.
This month’s playlist is curated by Lawrence, the project of Berlin-based producer, DJ and label-organiser Peter Kerstin.
