Am Eröffnungstag ist das Ludwig Forum Aachen durchgängig von 10-22 Uhr geöffnet.

Mit Ya Estamos Aquí (Spanisch für: Wir sind schon hier) präsentiert das Ludwig Forum Aachen die erste Überblicksausstellung von Belkis Ayón (Havanna, Kuba, 1967-1999) im deutschsprachigen Raum. Anhand einer Auswahl von rund 70 Arbeiten, die im Zeitraum von Mitte der 1980er bis Ende der 1990er Jahre entstanden sind, werden wesentliche Schaffensperioden der Künstlerin vorgestellt. Die Figuren, Symbole und Rituale ihrer Collagrafien sind allesamt dem ausschließlich Männern vorbehaltenen, afro-kubanischen Geheimbund Abakuá entlehnt, mit dem sich Ayón Zeit ihres Lebens intensiv beschäftigte. Vorstellungen von Synkretismus, also von der Verschmelzung verschiedener Glaubenssysteme, sowie von hierarchischen Machtstrukturen führt sie in ihren persönlichen Bearbeitungen der Abakuá Mythologien zusammen. Für diese aktualisierten Darstellungen des Mythos nutzte sie das Verfahren der Collagrafie – eine Drucktechnik, bei der collagierte und strukturierte Materialien in mühevoller Kleinarbeit auf eine Kartonmatrize geschichtet werden. Ausgehend von neunzehn Drucken und drei Matrizen aus den frühen 1990er Jahren, die Teil der Sammlung Peter und Irene Ludwig am Ludwig Forum Aachen sind, wird die Ausstellung durch Leihgaben aus dem Nachlass von Belkis Ayón sowie eine Auswahl von Ephemera und Archivmaterialien erweitert. In dieser umfangreichen Präsentation ihrer Arbeiten werden nicht zuletzt auch Verbindungen der Künstlerin zur Sammlung von Peter und Irene Ludwig und dem Raum Aachen deutlich, wo sie 1995 erstmals ausstellte. Belkis Ayón befragte, wie sie selbst sagte, immerzu „das Menschliche, das flüchtige Gefühl, das Spirituelle“ – Themen, die nun in der Ausstellung Ya Estamos Aquí einem breiten Publikum eröffnet werden.

Das Ausstellungsprojekt entstand in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Belkis Ayón Estate, Havanna, mit großzügiger Unterstützung der Peter und Irene Ludwig Stiftung, der STAWAG, des Landschaftsverbands Rheinland und der Freunde des Ludwig Forums.

Zum Anlass der Ausstellung wurde eine korrespondierende Sammlungspräsentation konzipiert. Unter dem Titel Palmipeda wird eine Auswahl lateinamerikanischer Grafik, Installation und Malerei der 80er und 90er Jahre aus der Sammlung von Peter und Irene Ludwig vorgestellt. Anlässlich der Ausstellung laden wir Sie am Samstag, den 22.10.2022, 12 Uhr, zu einer Matinée mit zwei Vorträgen über Belkis Ayón ein: Cristina Vives (Kuratorin und Kunsthistorikerin, Havanna) spricht zu wichtigen Momenten im Leben der Künstlerin und Yolanda Wood (Professorin für Kunstgeschichte, Universität von Havanna) untersucht den weiteren Produktionskontext der Künstlerin kurz vor der Jahrtausendwende.

Der Vortrag analysiert fünf bedeutsame Momente im Schaffensprozess der kubanischen Grafikkünstlerin Belkis Ayón, die in chronologischer Reihenfolge von 1988 – dem Jahr ihrer ersten Einzelausstellung – bis zu ihrem Tod im Jahr 1999 nachverfolgt werden. Anhand dieser Momente werden die kreativen, soziokulturellen und ideologischen Faktoren nachvollzogen, die die Künstlerin dazu bewegt hatten sich intensiv mit dem Abakuá-Geheimbund als Mythos und brüderliche Gemeinschaft auseinanderzusetzen. Vives’ Recherche zum Werk von Belkis Ayón begann während ihrer langjährigen Freundschaft und Zusammenarbeit mit der Künstlerin und wurde im Rahmen der Wanderausstellung Nkame: A Retrospective of Cuban Printmaker Belkis Ayón fortgesetzt, die zwischen 2016 und 2021 in sieben Museen in den Vereinigten Staaten und zuletzt im Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid zu sehen war.

Cristina Vives (1955, Havanna) lebt und arbeitet als Kuratorin und Kunstkritikerin in Havanna, Kuba. Sie schloss ihr Studium der Kunstgeschichte an der Universität von Havanna ab. Sie ist Mitbegründerin des Estudio Figueroa-Vives (seit 1994), ein Pionierraum für unabhängige zeitgenössische Kunst in Kuba. In den Jahren 1994 und 1995 war sie Stipendiatin des J. Paul Getty Center und gewann 2007, 2009 und 2010 den Premio Nacional de Curaduría. Seit 1986 kuratiert sie Ausstellungen in Kuba, den Vereinigten Staaten und Europa, darunter auch die Retrospektive von Belkis Ayón. Zu ihren jüngsten Publikationen zählen Cultura y contracultura en la fotografía de la revolución cubana (Fundación Mapfre, Barcelona, 2022); Belkis Ayón. Colografías (Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, 2021); Behind the Veil of a Myth. Belkis Ayón (Houston, 2018); The Inevitable Space. Alexandre Arrechea (2014); Nkame. Yolanda Wood untersucht in ihrem Vortrag Schlüsselaspekte des Jahres 1999, in welchem Belkis Ayón im Alter von 32 Jahren beschloss, ihr Leben zu beenden. Sie beleuchtet den erweiterten Produktionskontext der Künstlerin während der intensiven Schaffensphase in den letzten Monaten ihres Lebens, der die vielfältigen Bereiche ihres künstlerischen Wirkens umfasst: internationale Verpflichtungen, ihre kuratorische Arbeit wie auch die allgemeine Förderung der Gravurtechnik, ihre Lehrtätigkeit, öffentliche und partizipatorische Projekte sowie die Suche nach Anknüpfungspunkten zwischen dem eigenen Werk und dem anderer kubanischer zeitgenössischer Künstlerinnen. Wood, deren tiefe Verbundenheit mit der Künstlerin in diesem Vortrag deutlich wird, durchläuft den Lebens- und Arbeitszyklus von Belkis Ayón, der auch nach der Jahrtausendwende noch für Zeitgenoss*innen und nachfolgende Generationen unvergesslich geblieben ist.

Yolanda Wood Pujols (1950, Kuba) ist Professorin für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität von Havanna, Forscherin, Kunstkritikerin und Gastprofessorin an der Iberoamerikanischen Universität in Mexiko-Stadt. 1993 promovierte sie in Kunstgeschichte und war Postdoc-Stipendiatin an der UNAM 2017–18. 1985 gründete sie den Lehrstuhl für karibische Kunst an der Universität von Havanna. Wood hat zahlreiche Vorträge über kubanische und karibische Kunst gehalten, unter anderem am Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas (Mexiko), an der Polytechnischen Universität (Valencia) und an der Universität Quisqueya (Haiti). Wood ist Mitglied der Vereinigung für visuelle Kunst (UNEAC) und der AICA International. Sie war Dekanin der Fakultät für Kunst und Literatur der Universität von Havanna (1994–2000), Rektorin des Instituto Superior de Arte, Kuba (1985–91), kubanische Kulturberaterin in Frankreich (2000–05), Direktorin des Zentrums für Karibikstudien der Casa de las Américas (La Habana) und der Anales del Caribe (2006–16) sowie Präsidentin der CSA (2017–18).

The Ludwig Forum Aachen is pleased to present Ya Estamos Aquí (Spanish for: We’re Here Already), the first survey exhibition of the Cuban artist Belkis Ayón (Havana, 1967-1999) in the German-speaking world. Starting from a selection of around seventy works created in the period from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, the exhibition introduces key creative periods of the artist’s career. The figures, symbols, and rituals in her collages are borrowed from the Afro-Cuban secret society Abakuá, reserved exclusively for men, which Ayón studied intensively throughout her life. In her personal adaptations of Abakuá mythologies, she brings together concepts of syncretism, meaning the fusion of different belief systems, and hierarchical power structures. For her updated depictions of this myth, the artist used the process of collagraphy—a printing technique in which collaged and textured materials are painstakingly layered onto a cardboard matrix. Starting with nineteen prints and three matrices from the early 1990s that are part of the Peter und Irene Ludwig Collection at Ludwig Forum Aachen, the exhibition is significantly extended and includes loans from the Belkis Ayón Estate and a selection of ephemera and archival materials, making tangible her links to Peter and Irene Ludwig’s collection as well as to the broader Aachen region, where she first exhibited in 1995. Belkis Ayón, according to the artist herself, always sought to question “the human, the fleeting feeling, the spiritual”—themes now opened up to a broad audience in the exhibition Ya Estamos Aquí.

The exhibition project was organized in collaboration with the Belkis Ayón Estate, Havana, with the generous support of the Peter und Irene Ludwig Stiftung, STAWAG, the Landschaftsverband Rheinland and the Friends of the Ludwig Forum.

A corresponding collection presentation was conceived on the occasion of the exhibition. Under the title Palmipeda, a selection of Latin American graphic art, installation and painting of the 80s and 90s from the collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig will be presented. On the occasion of the exhibition we coridally invite you to a matinée with two lectures on Saturday, October 22, 2022 at 12.00pm: Cristina Vives (art historian and curator, Havana) will speak about important moments in the artist’s life, while Yolanda Wood (Professor for Art History, University of Havana) will explore the artist’s broader context of production just before the turn of the millenium.

The lecture analyses five significant moments in the creative process of the Cuban printmaker Belkis Ayón, following a chronological order from 1988—the year of her first solo exhibition—to her death in 1999. These moments are used to trace the creative, socio-cultural, and ideological factors that led the artist to become intensively involved with the Abakuá secret society as both myth and fraternal community. Vives’ research on the work of Belkis Ayón began during her longtime friendship and collaboration with the artist and continued as part of the traveling exhibition Nkame: A Retrospective of Cuban Printmaker Belkis Ayón, which, between 2016 and 2021, has been on view at seven museums in the United States and was presented most recently at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.

Cristina Vives is a curator and art critic based in Havana, Cuba. She graduated from the University of Havana with a degree in Art History. She is the founder of Estudio Figueroa-Vives (since 1994), a pioneering space in Cuba for independent contemporary art. In 1994 and 1995 she received a J. Paul Getty Center grant and won the Premio Nacional de Curaduría in 2007, 2009 and 2010. She has curated exhibitions in Cuba, the United States, and Europe since 1986, including the recently touring retrospective of Belkis Ayón. Recent publications include Cultura y contracultura en la fotografía de la revolución cubana (Fundación Mapfre, Barcelona, 2022); Belkis Ayón. Belkis Ayón on the Threshold of this New Millennium

In her lecture, Yolanda Wood examines key aspects of the year 1999, when Belkis Ayón decided to end her life at the age of 32 on the threshold of this new century. She highlights the artist’s broader context of production during an intense creative process in the last months of her life, encompassing multiple fields of her artistic practice: international commitments, her curatorial work and general promotion of engraving, her teaching work, public and participatory projects, as well as the establishing of relationships between her work and that of other female, Cuban, contemporary artists. Wood, whose deep connection with Ayón’s work becomes evident in her lecture, navigates a cycle of life and work that managed to transcend the threshold of the new millennium, becoming unforgettable for the artist’s contemporaries and the generations to follow.

Yolanda Wood Pujols (1950, Cuba) is Professor of Art History, University of Havana, researcher, art critic, and Invited Professor at the Ibero-American University, Mexico City. She holds a PhD in Art History (1993), and was Postdoc Fellow at UNAM 2017-18. She founded the Chair of Caribbean Art at the University of Havana in 1985. Wood has given lectures and courses of Cuban and Caribbean Art at the Institute of Aesthetic Investigations (Mexico), Polytechnic University (Valencia), and Quisqueya University (Haiti), among others. Wood is a member of the Visual Art Association (UNEAC) and the AICA International. She was Dean, Faculty of Arts and Letters, University of Havana (1994-2000); Vice-chancellor, Instituto Superior de Arte, Cuba (1985-91); Cuban Cultural Advisor in France (2000-05); Director, Caribbean Studies Centre, Casa de las Américas (La Habana) and Anales del Caribe (2006-16); and CSA President (2017-18). In 2918 she received the Chevalier des Arts et Lettres Medal of the French Republic.
