LMNO a le grand plaisir de vous convier à venir découvrir le fruit d’une nouvelle collaboration avec l’artiste Gabriela Albergaria (1965, Vale de Cambra, Portugal) à travers sa première exposition personnelle en Belgique intitulée Making Soil.

Depuis les années 90, l’artiste portugaise concentre la grande diversité de ses œuvres sur un thème central, la nature. Gabriela Albergaria étudie les spécificités des jardins et des paysages et leur rôle de témoins d’une nature manipulée, transportée, altérée et conservée. 

Son travail prend de multiples formes comme la photographie, le dessin, la poésie, l’installation et la sculpture. L’artiste joue avec les effets de transformation, de fermentation et de fugacité, éléments majeurs dans le processus de la nature, cruciaux pour le renouvellement et la durabilité de toutes les formes de vie.

Les dessins et sculpture présentés ici, sont inspirés par le texte The Work of Local Culture (1988) de Wendell Berry. L’histoire est celle d’un seau accroché à une clôture, recueillant la pluie, la neige et les feuilles. Au fil du temps, ces apports naturels ont créé un fond humide et pourri, créant une toute nouvelle couche de terre. “Making Soil”, le titre de l’exposition, est une expression tirée du livre.

Les dessins jouent avec le concept de paysage imaginé, car les deux parties de l’œuvre, l’une étant une photographie et l’autre un dessin, ne forment pas forcément un tout dans la réalité. Néanmoins, elles sont complémentaires.

La pièce centrale, Pinch Pinch Pinch, fait référence à la permaculture et au sol fertile autour de la planète qui disparaît petit à petit à cause de nombreux mauvais emplois ou exploitations. 

Le support, fait de la terre ramassée au Bois de Fa, utilise une technique ancestrale de construction en terre battue. Cette base est recouverte d’une multitude de cubes de terre, contenant pour certains des graines de haricots non OGM. 

Ce rappel à l’agriculture intensive, épuisant les sols, se retrouve même dans les dimensions de la sculpture, puisque celle-ci est composée de 25 carrés de 30cm sur 30cm correspondant à la taille des machines qui ensemencent les terres agricoles. L’épaisseur du support, entre 20 et 25 cm de terre, correspond à l’épaisseur moyenne de sol fertile sur la planète. 

La nature environnant Bruxelles joue un rôle central dans cette exposition. Les lieux de collecte de la terre sont significatifs pour l’artiste. Le nord du Portugal dont elle est originaire, la forêt de Soignes et le Bois de Fa ne sont pas seulement des ressources de matériaux mais surtout des lieux hautement impliqués dans le processus de création et d’inspiration de l’artiste. 

Le travail de Gabriela Albergaria fut présentée notamment à Culturgest en 2020/2021, avec une exposition
personnelle intitulée Nature Abhors a Straight Line, sous le commissariat de Delfim Sardo, au Sheffield Park en
2018 avec Inanimate Object, or the complete cycle of the soil, et au Kreeger Museum, également en 2018,
avec Segunda Natureza. Elle présente actuellement au Venha a nós a Boa Morte (VNBM), une exposition
intitulée Lugares restos -Remnant-Spaces.

LMNO has the pleasure of informing you that is has embarked on a new collaboration with Gabriela Albergaria (1965, Vale de Cambra, Portugal) for an exhibition entitled Making Soil.

Since the 1990’s this Portuguese artist has been focusing the considerable diversity of her work on one central theme: nature. Gabriela Albergaria studies the specific features of gardens and landscapes and their role as testimonies to a nature that has been transported, tampered with, and conserved. Her work takes on diverse forms, such as photography, drawing, poetry, installation and sculpture. The artist plays with the effects of transformation, fermentation and fugacity, all of them major elements in the processes of nature, crucial to the renewal and sustainability of all forms of life.

This will be Gabriela Albergaria’s first solo exhibition in Belgium.

The drawings and the sculpture presented here by Gabriela Albergaria were inspired by Wendell Berry’s book The Work of Local Culture (1988), the story of a bucket hanging from a fence, collecting rain, snow and leaves. Over the course of time those natural inputs have created a wet, rotting base, producing an entirely new layer of soil. Making Soil, the title of the exhibition, is a phrase from the book.

The drawings play with the idea of an imagined landscape, since the two parts of the work, one of them a photograph, the other a drawing, do not necessarily actually combine into a whole. However, they are complementary.

The central piece, Pinch Pinch Pinch, refers to permaculture and to the fertile soils disappearing gradually all over the planet because of all sorts of misuse and overexploitation. The support, made out of the soil gathered in the Fa woods, uses an age-old technique of trodden earth construction. This base is covered with a multitude of cubes of earth, some of which contain seeds of non-GMO beans. This reminder of intensive agriculture, which exhausts the soil, can also be found in the very dimensions of the sculpture, since it is made up of twenty-five 30cm by 30cm squares, corresponding to the size of the machines seeding agricultural land. The thickness of the support, between 20 and 25 cm of soil, corresponds for its part to the average thickness of fertile soil on the planet. Each cube at the centre of a 30cm area contains one seed.

The nature all round Brussels plays a pivotal role in this exhibition. The places where the soil is collected have a significant role for the artist. The north of Portugal of which she is a native, the Sonian Forest and the Bois de Fa, all these are not mere sources for materials, but places that are deeply involved in the artist’s creative process and in her inspiration.

Gabriela Albergaria’s work was among others presented at Culturgest in 2020/2021, with a solo exhibition entitle

LMNO is verheugd u te informeren dat we een nieuwe samenwerking hebben gecreëerd met Gabriela Albergaria (1965, Vale de Cambra, Portugal) voor een tentoonstelling getiteld Making Soil.

Sinds de jaren negentig van de vorige eeuw focust de Portugese kunstenares haar divers oeuvre op één centraal thema, Natuur. Gabriela Albergaria onderzoekt de karakters van tuinen en landschappen, hoe deze getuigen zijn van een gemanipuleerde, getransporteerde, veranderde en gecureerde natuur. Ze doet dit door middel van fotografie, tekenen, poëzie, installatiekunst en sculptuur. De kunstenares speelt met de effecten van transformatie, fermentatie en vergankelijkheid, beslissende elementen in de processen van de natuur, dewelke cruciaal zijn voor de vernieuwing en duurzaamheid van alle vormen van leven.

Deze tentoonstelling zal Gabriela Albergaria’s eerste solo show in België zijn.

Gabriela Albergaria nam als startpunt voor deze tentoonstelling de tekst The Work of Local Culture (1988) van Wendell Berry, een verhaal over een emmer hangend aan een hek, regen, sneeuw en bladeren verzamelend. Doorheen de tijd vormen deze natuurlijke toevoegingen een vochtige en rotte bodem, waardoor ze een nieuwe laag aarde hebben gecreëerd. “Making Soil”, de titel van deze tentoonstelling, komt voort uit één van de passages uit de tekst.

Hier tentoongesteld zijn tekeningen, sculpturen en tekst. De tekeningen spelen met het concept van een beoogd landschap, want de twee delen van het werk, enerzijds een foto en anderzijds een tekening, horen niet noodzakelijk bij elkaar in werkelijkheid. Desalniettemin zijn ze complementair.

Het centrale stuk is genoemd Pinch Pinch Pinch en is een verwijzing naar het idee van permacultuur en de vruchtbare grond de Aarde die aan het verdwijnen is door meerdere misbruiken.

Het werk bestaat uit een houder gemaakt van aarde afkomstig uit Bois de Fa, gebruikmakend van de archaïsche bouwtechniek van samengeperste aard, bedekt met een laag kleine blokjes ook gemaakt van aarde. Sommige van deze blokjes bevatten niet-GMO boonzaden. De afmetingen van de delen van het werk maken gebruik van verwijzingen naar landbouw, zoals de 20/25 cm van vruchtbare grond gevonden over de hele planeet. Of de 30 cm verwijzend naar de afstelling van machine die zaden planten. Het werk is 25 maal 30 cm, georganiseerd in een vierkante vorm. De centrale blokje van elk patroon van 30 cm hebben zaden in zich.

De hoofdgedachte was om de natuur rond Brussel te gebruiken als een wijze van denken. Gabriela verzamelde deze aarde in betekenisvolle plaatsen, haar thuisomgeving van noord Portugal en grond gevonden in het Zoniënwoud, Bois de Fa, Grez-Doiceau. Ze maakt gebruik van deze plaatsen als zowel materiële als immateriële bronnen.

Andere noemenswaardige tentoonstellingen met Gabriela zijn Nature Abhors a Straight Line (Culturgest, 2020/2021), Inanimate Object, or the complete cycle of the soil (Sheffield Park, 2018), Segunda Natureza (Kreeger Museum, 2018). En momenteel Lugares Restos – Remnant-Spaces in Venha a nós a Boa Morte (VNBM) (2022).
