[dinA] Boulevard Jacqmain (prologue) by Olivia Ardui
27/05/2023 – walk/presentation

[EN] Boulevard Jacqmain is a long-term research and exhibition project initiated by Olivia Ardui and based on the novel of Brussels surrealist writer Irène Hamoir. A temporary collective of artists was brought together in this first phase of the project. Through surrealist meet-ups and experimental readings, they explored Brussels history and artistic past in the shade of Hamoir’s stories.

English Below

Petitcoat Governement’s giants off to Venice!

We are glad to announce that the collective project created by Denicolai & Provost, Antoniette Jattiot, Nord et Spec uloos was chosen for the Belgian pavilion at the legendary  Biennale de Venise in 2024.

Art, curation, architecture, and graphic design work together under a project that focuses on the pan-European mythical figures : the giants. Inspired by the living popular base, Petticoat Government diverts the folkloric vision, the symbolic and political weight of the giant’s object. This culture transgresses and overflows borders in every sense, testifying to the vivacity and diversity of their communities.

With the support of multiple accomplices, the giants are set in motion in a new narrative. Through displacement and the nomadic spirit that drives travel, bodies shape space and the powers of identification and projection that surround them.

Petticoat government is a party where everybody is invited to.

The representation of the collective as a group and a working method embodies a singularly poetic and subtly political dynamism (a joyful militancy, as Silvia Federici would say).

The project selected for the Belgian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2024 underlines the feasibility of a collective “doing with” that intends to sweep away hieraticism instead of stigmatising an individual practice.

Upcoming at fluent

Upcoming programme
at fluent

Calle Luis Hoyos Sainz 2, (int)
39001, Santander,
Spain.

www.fluentfluent.org

In the rise of Spring, fluent examines notions of maintenance within the fragility, extraction, precarity, and uncertainty that our socio–economic landscapes contain. Through an organic channeling of our activities, the current and upcoming program is devoted to an examination of the fundamental conditions in the maintenance of life and how to shape it through rehearsing pedagogies, choreographing bodies in space and the distribution of aesthetic and ideological forms.

Elaborating from Margaux Schwarz’s performance that expanded and slowed the audience’s gaze on their immediate environment, Instrucciones is currently on view and is extended until May 5th.
On the same day, Friday 5th of May, we will host a conversation with anthropologist, engineer, professor and ecofeminist activist Yayo Herrero, addressing the decline of material resources and the need for a structural transformation where the caring for life is at the center of the civilizatory system.

The program further unfolds with a solo exhibition by Iris Touliatou opening on May 18th and on view throughout July 7th which leads to an archival exhibition exploring the entangled relations in the fields of art, education and policy making in local and foreign contexts which will open on July 14th.
Thus, building from Proteínas, our current educational apparatus, the program ties in with various pedagogical structures in the lead-up to a study program that insists on the incompleteness of art’s place within –and beyond– our societal conditions and the possibility of reimagining their ecological, social and political articulations.

Last days:
Margaux Schwarz, Instrucciones.

Exhibition extended until May 5th, 2023.

In her performance and installation, Margaux Schwarz addresses a series of interactions with different people who are not presented to us, akin to a kind of training, which is in turns condescending, mothering or authoritarian. These instructions are all given in the name of an unspecified «We».

Can the repetition of language, intensity and tone reveal invisibilized contracts between subjects, economies and social roles? Through this question, Schwarz interrogates whether it is possible to activate new interactions between a collective form of intimacy and social power–dynamics.

Toma de Tierra:
Yayo Herrero at fluent books.
May, 5th. 8 p.m.

Anthropologist, engineer, professor and ecofeminist activist Yayo Herrero will be at fluent books presenting her last book, Toma de Tierra, published by Caniche.
Herrero’s work addresses the decline of material resources and the need for a structural transformation where the caring for life is at the center of the civilizatory system, thus overcoming the deep conditions of capitalist inequality, extraction, violence and oppression. Toma de Tierra brings together a selection of Yayo Herrero’s texts, interviews and conferences in which the frank word, her own but shared voice, unfolds in an effort to put life at the center.

Yayo Herrero is a renowned ecofeminist activist. She has been state coordinator of Ecologistas en Acción and director of the FUHEM Foundation; She is currently part of the Garúa Cooperative and Foro de Transiciones. She participates in numerous social and ecological initiatives for the protection of human and natural rights and regularly collaborates in different media.

Iris Touliatou.
Exhibition opening: May 18th
May 19th –– July 14th

For her forthcoming solo exhibition at fluent, Iris Touliatou presents a series of scores introducing and activating a number of emotional gestures and relations that stress the fragility of our contemporary condition. With a singular focus on each site of presentation, Touliatou rehearses a specific aspect of the intimate, precarious, and interdependent contingencies in our shared world. Her approach to this exhibition looks at a series of local infrastructures where collective intimacy can be experienced.

In englischer Sprache

Thu, May 4, 2023, 6.30pm (Space, Ludwig Forum Aachen)

Kiev-based artists and filmmakers Roman Khimei and Yarema Malashchuk, have been collaborating at the intersection of visual art and cinema since 2013. At Ludwig Forum Aachen, they present their two most recent video works: Explosions Near the Museum (2023) features footage from the Kherson Museum of Local Lore, looted by Russian occupational forces in 2022; the sounds of shellings and missile strikes were recorded while filming inside the museum on December 12. In The Wanderer (2022), the two artists work with staged images that show their own bodies in the Carpathian Mountains and allude to the corpses of Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

Khimei and Malashchuk are part of the Prykarpattian Theater art collective, which recently realized the project Theater of Hopes and Expectations between Düsseldorf and Sloboda-Kukharska, Ukraine. In 2020 they were awarded the main prize of the PinchukArtCentre Prize.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with the filmmaker Yarema Malashchuk, Prof. Alexander Markschies (RWTH Aachen) and Fanny Hauser (Ludwig Forum Aachen).

Organized by Ludwig Forum Aachen and Internationaler Karlspreis e.V. as part of this year’s Karlspreis program.

Oscillation Bulletin ::: Final Episode

workspace for experimental music and sound art

Oscillation ::: o tempo final episode
…May many moons bless us abundantly with this post-oscillation haze

Dear post-oscillation ::: o tempo generation,

As we’re writing this, six students from both the Université Laval Quebec and RITCS are working on their new sound pieces in the Q-O2 HQ, creating an unsuspected pleasant sonic background for writing this last bulletin. The future waits just around the office’s corner, while at the same time the echoes of past weekend still reverberate through our heads. This fifth edition will undoubtedly stand the test of time: countless gripping performances, workshops, talks, hangouts, unsuspected gatherings, … a dream edition it has been. But what might linger on longest in our ever time-sensitive thoughts might be the micro-community we’ve been part of last weekend. A microcosmos of artists, partners (special thanks to Pieter and Maarten and the rest of the Needcompany team, Gert and the HISK crew, Père Stefano, and Charlemagne Palestine for his grandiose finale!), volunteers, interns (Sara, Marius, Han <3) and the audience that created the perfect circumstances for our celebration of sound. Time was on our side.

Head in the clouds, our hearts – the warmest,

The Oscillation Crew

The six artists will present in a performative way some games, songs or media constructions which relate to their respective languages, their friendship and translations.
Above all, they try to meet and play in the middle of those newly established communications, which they try to continually remake in order to keep fooling around and pay attention to their shared discoveries.

OPENING PROGRAMME

For this new exhibition, British artist Shezad Dawood finds inspiration in the creative output of African American musician, composer and polymath, Yusef Lateef. Enter Dawood’s universe through an enchanting VR experience, a suite of new painted textiles, and a garden of digital plants growing in response to Lateef’s music.

You can also encounter a live mutant dancing through the exhibition, wearing a specially created costume sculpture, as Dawood’s work breaks down the boundaries between the analogue and the digital, between fiction, virtual reality and real life.

Curators: Zoë Gray & Helena Kritis
Produced in partnership with: Aga Khan Museum in Toronto
With the special support of: GBL
Thanks to: The Ekard Collection, Jhaveri Contemporary (Mumbai), Barakat Contemporary (Seoul) & Firmenich
Special thanks to: The Estate of Yusef Lateef

DISCOVER MORE

The Polish-Belgian artist Tapta set out in the 1960s to radically redefine sculpture by using textiles and other flexible materials as sculptural elements. This exhibition centres on Tapta’s attention to the tactility of her materials, the suppleness of structures, individual and collective practice, and the interaction between artwork, space and viewer. New work by Greet Billet, Hana Miletić and Richard Venlet is also presented in relation to Tapta’s historical pieces.

Oscillation Bulletin ::: Episode 4

workspace for experimental music and sound art

Oscillation ::: o tempo bulletin ep. 4
…trancingggouttt

Dear temporal specimen,

Is time a flat circle? Yesterday it felt more like a bouncing sphere – simultaneously droning, crackling, head-spinning on the HISK and Needcompany in the afternoon, aleatoric electronics, polyphonic chanting, audio flotsam at night. What is certain is that time has no compassion: it’s already the last day of our annual feast. But a grand finale awaits us, starting with improvised readings by Will Holder and Paul Abbott, and a concert by organ shaman Charlemagne Palestine as the icing on the cake of this final day (for which there are still some very last tickets available). In between these performances there is the durational improv set by Farida Amadou, Katharina Ernst, ASUNA and Clara de Asís, which will also be broadcast on P-Node.

To dream away one more time at all yesterday’s splendor, please find an acrostic quiz report below (answers are artist’s names, or drinks available at the bar, find them below the pictures) :::

Our drone of the year
Spellbindingly spinnin’ since 1969
Chants that we need everyday
Incredible maginiary meetings between Hildegard von Bingen and Pauline Oliveros
Let me please have one more of these at the MILL hangout
Late night aleatoric arrays
Audio archeologist nr. 1
Time pockets FM melancholia summoner
Ideas we didn’t know we needed them
Otherworldy miniature meanderings
Not normal intonation virtuosity

© Nikolaj Jessen

(answers: ASUNA – Nur/Se performs Éliane Radigue – Younes Zarhoni – Clara Lévy – Zinnebir – Jung An Tagen – Mark Vernon – Maia Urstad – Jessica Ekomane – Maria Komarova – Clara de Asís & Rebecca Lane)

Today’s timetable:

14:00 Will Holder & Paul Abbott
15:00 Farida Amadou, Katharina Ernst, ASUNA, Clara de Asís [durational improv, also broadcast on P-Node]:

Between 15h and 18h, four improvisers are invited to play together for three hours. The concert is conceived as an open experiment, in which the performers are asked to measure their energies over an unfamiliar duration. What we will hear is the real-time relation of the players as it unfolds over the extended line of the performance, beyond the traditional arc of an improvised set.

20:00 Charlemagne Palestine [@ Église du Couvent des Pères Carmes]

Bouncing, still,

Oscillation ::: o tempo bulletin ep. 3
… you have not heard the half of it

Dear experiencer of the eternal now,

We have reached the halfway point of the festival, but we’re still on a total high. After all the force of the first night, the second night brought us a gentler, soothing tone. In the midst of the engulfing exposition of sound, we’ve collected some semi-fictional quotes from the audience:

“Ameel Brecht broke my heart.”

“I want Jessica Ekomane to make my life choices now.”

“I think Olga Kokcharova makes the perfect person for the soundtrack of my biopic.”

“I hope Felix Kubin can organise my wedding.”

“Do you know who’s the personal trainer of Katharina Ernst?”

“I think Marija Rasa just invented fifth world music.”

Today’s timetable:

Afternoon program: This block is made up of open-ended pieces, with long and variable durations. These performances function as containers or environments which can be moved in and out of. Five performances will take place in two parallel spaces, on two floors of the same building. Listeners are invited to move between pieces in their own rhythm, as they would, perhaps, in a garden.

Nieuwsbrief: Táctica Sintáctica, ROOMS 02, Plantiarchy workshops 🪴

View in browser

Plantiarchy: pulp workshops

Save the date!

(Kosten in overleg, workshop duur is max. 2u.)

Dear dwellers of the Holocene,

Playing out vertically, Sharon van Overmeiren’s works take on the auratic qualities of the totem, their anthropomorphism coming with promises of talismanic powers. They stand vertically, cutting the space as bulkheads in a psychological landscape. But in their full frontality they also look strangely naked, a feeling we could owe to the materiality of the ceramic, making the auratic character less stable, as if those figures were unsure of what they are supposed to conjure. To read it with a sense of mission reminds of a modernist tradition: David Smith’s Tanktotem of 1952 stands in vicinity, treating the totem as an abstract sign through a precise work on the materials that compose it. Van Overmeiren’s emblems work however outside of a strict authoritative frontality: the clay is baked at low temperature, a material composition reminiscent of an organic body and its internal architecture, the statues’ openings playing out as air vents. They seem to shape networks of pumps and reservoirs, as a natural air conditioning system of an ancient architecture that would use evaporative cooling to support extreme heat. A call to the present, as those past technological feats make their comeback in light of ecological challenges. This actual urgency is set in the slow temporality of ceramic, linking specific cultural knowledge to the subjective understanding of its materiality. An interweaving of both registers that mark the essential personal and political aspects of Van Overmeiren’s practice.

But to look at the sculptures means also coming closer to a sense of playfulness, as if there was a mischievous intention to replay the auratic of the totem with cartoonesque codes. The curved-in shapes recall exaggerated grimaces, something almost goofy. Their shape in themselves can trigger another association, for example to Dyson cooling systems that breathe out fresh air. The call to goofiness or contemporary objects so symbolic of the comfort of the modern house links it to another form of speculative anthropology. Van Overmeiren’s sculptures operate within this realm: the talismanic function due to their totem-like character, a kind of mutability in their genres as objects (those little statues that could be souvenir shops memorabilia as well as sex toys), and a pronounced return to the natural (pedestals as stumps, statute and base merging as if it was all carved out in one piece). They mutate outside of a linear loading bar of progress, and enter in repeated reverberations through time and space and the forming of cultures, as symptoms of an archaic future.
