Opening Outside the Text

View this email in your browser

Beste lezer,

In Outside the Text staat de vraag centraal hoe taal onze realiteit vormgeeft.

Youri Appelo, curator
en het POST-team

Janette Parris in Life Is More Important Than Art at Whitechapel Gallery

On June 14th, artist and friend of Montez Press Janette Parris will be showing her drawings at the Whitechapel Gallery as part of Life Is More Important Than Art: a summer-long, multidisciplinary programme of exhibitions and events exploring the intersection of art and everyday life and the role of the contemporary art institution at a time of uncertainty and change.

The title of the season takes inspiration from writer and novelist James Baldwin. At a time when the cost-of-living crisis is causing severe financial hardship and the after-effects of the pandemic are still being felt, we consider the role of art and the art institution in everyday life. What importance can we attach to art alongside more pressing concerns?

The exhibition maps dynamic histories of migration and difference, with a focus on London and the East End. Visit for a sneak peek at drawings to be featured in Janette Parris’ upcoming book with Montez Press.

Saturday June 24th at 8pm please join us at Abrons Arts Center for Cape—Lamb’s major stage debut co-directed by Ava Elizabeth Novak. Cape is a muso-poetical play that follows five characters who live on an unnamed coastal landmass in the early 1500s. One day, a portal door materializes on the cape; the passageway allows one to instantly traverse thousands of miles of global distance. Braced against this new apprehension of the world, the characters—Lamb, the Lovers, the Cartographer, the Conductor, and the Voice—grapple with world-mapping, self-coordination, and relation in a suddenly global world.

Through the ritual of performance, Lamb and Novak consider what kind of ontological reckonings indigenous lives on the cape undergo when their finistère (end of the earth) becomes a point of relay. This performance is organized as part of The Kitchen x Montez Press Radio’s 12-Month Residency, and tickets can be purchased here.

Christian Landspersky,

WHAT REMAINS

A question that plays a role in contemporary art practice is what to do with the material of a (temporary) installation when the exhibition is over. Or the material left over from experiments in the artist’s studio. This is one of the questions Christian Landspersky asks with the project What Remains Gallery.

For Greylight Projects, it is a recurring topic as a workshop and exhibition space for contemporary art. What remains after an artist has been a guest in our studios in Heerlen. Is this a material intervention or are it lasting ideas that resonate in the minds of visitors and participants?

To draw attention to the original material, which the contemporary art system, once used – as replaceable, temporary and reproducible – discards. In a field of both mental and physical tension, What Remains Gallery approaches the forgotten and excluded and, at the same time, the present and existing. What Remains Gallery is not so much the idea of an art gallery as a mental space for transformations to be explored.

What Remains Gallery:
What remains / What Remains? Since its inception in 2009, the What Remains Gallery has revolved around this question. Instead of producing something new, the focus of the artistic practice is on exploring what already exists. What remains of an artist’s work, an artistic work and its idea after it has been exhibited? What Remains Gallery starts from this end, to discover a new beginning in artistic potential.

Featuring works curated with materials from previous works by Laure Prouvost, Lawrence Weiner and Tony Cragg.

WHAT THE FLAG?! 2023

The flag has a long tradition of different uses and meanings. Flags are commonly used to transmit signals, to identify countries, regions or cities, or to visually demarcate a territory. Flags are also frequently used to represent political ideas and beliefs. The artists are asked to respond from their own work and vision of the medium “flag” within the context of the location in which they are shown. The different flags will be shown to the public at various locations in and around the inner city of Heerlen. There is also an exchange of artists flags between art organizations and museums in the Euregion, a collaboration within the Very Contemporary network.

Participating artists:
Anna Neukamp, Athanasia Vidali, Ben Weir, Christian Landspersky, Éloïse Alliguié, Famke Storms, Isolde Venrooy, Jean Boumans, Jody Korbach, Kaya Erdinç, Kenneth Moreno Kiernand, Mikail Korcek, Rose Nordin, Stefania Crisan, Tom Bogaert, Vera Drebusch, Luuk Smits, Paul Koppers, among others.

JUIN 2023

JUNE 2023

What influence will artificial intelligence have on contemporary creation? Will it replace artists or boost their creativity?

KADIST and the Centre Pompidou are announcing a three-year collaboration on AI 🚀

As the first in a new series of collaborations between KADIST and major museums (“KADIST Nomadic Collection”), this multi-part association will start within the Moviment program, on July 13 at the Centre Pompidou. It will run until 2025, illustrating KADIST’s commitment to accompany and support leading institutions in the long term.

Ho Rui An, Screen Green, 2015 | Courtesy of the artist, KADIST collection

Recognizing the near-future impact of artificial intelligence on creativity and artistic practice, KADIST and the Centre Pompidou are focusing on both the critical and the transformational potential of this dawning revolution of visual culture, launching debates about automation, problematics of cultural aggregation, issues of artistic consent, and the limits of copyright.

This collaboration explores artificial intelligence and sound, image and video generating technologies, and how they will impact the field of artistic creation and production. It has three components:

In July 2023: a public event at the Centre Pompidou will set the groundwork for critical frameworks and artistic reflections in progress.

In 2024: a series of new commissions and recent acquisitions will be presented at the Centre Pompidou – Musée national d’art moderne.

In 2025: an intervention in the public space will take form, following the closure for renovation of the Centre Pompidou building.

“THE FUTURE ISN’T WHAT IT USED TO BE – A NEW GENERATION OF TEXTS AND IMAGES”

ON THURSDAY, JULY 13, 2023, 3-9 PM

A conference during Moviment inaugurates this new collaboration with an afternoon of conversations, video screenings and discussions, from 3 to 9 pm. The focus will be on critical takes of this cultural moment, as AI is simultaneously absorbed or deployed and alternately resisted and rejected.

Speakers and artists include: Marcella Lista (Centre Pompidou – Musée national d’art moderne), Joseph del Pesco (KADIST), Michael Connor (Rhizome, NY), Mashinka Firunts Hakopian, Nouf Aljowaysir, Carlos Amorales, Ho Rui An, Sofia Crespo, Holly Herndon & Mathew Dryhurst, Agnieszka Kurant, Juan Obando.

In English, at the Centre Pompidou, Galerie 3 – Place Georges-Pompidou, 75004 Paris (free access).

ADD TO MY CALENDAR

Agnieszka Kurant, Sentimentite, 2022 | Courtesy of the artist, KADIST collection

As a singular and engaged nonprofit, KADIST plans to establish long-term partnerships with museums, ensuring the continual renewal and relevance of its collection for the next generation.

Conceived alongside a group of curators and museum directors, the “KADIST Nomadic Collection” is a reflection on the future of a networked institution, its collection and the relationships between public museums and private foundations.

It will extend the already existing links between these two types of entities, which usually amount to financial support or short-term endeavors. Every 3 to 5 years, this collaborative program will make available, via a multi-year loan, a large part of the KADIST collection to a leading museum, for exhibitions and educational programs addressing key issues of our time.

The Pinacoteca de São Paulo (Brazil) will follow the Centre Pompidou, in 2025.

Opening: Dóra Maurer–SUMUS–We Are Together

For those who keep us on the bright side

Polina Doroshenko & Stefaniia Dobrianska

Part of the airWG Series

In this exhibition Ukrainian WG artist-in-residence Polina Doroshenko presents drawings and texts reflecting her personal journey after leaving her home in Kyiv with her young daughter Stefaniia.

Opening: Friday 16 June 17:00-19:00 at puntWG

How do you keep going on when your home is in a war zone?

How do you protect your child and take care of yourself when everything brings

to mind the writings of George Orwell?….

I began to make sketchbooks with drawings and reflections, a first-hand

format to visualise my thoughts, ideas and anxieties. These’ visual

diaries’ became an important part of my life with my daughter Stefaniia.

Somewhere between diving deep into darkness and simple everyday’s

happiness. In this exhibition, at the end of my airWG residency I’m

sharing our personal story on our continuing journey.

Polina & Stefaniia’s WG residency is supported by Dutch Fund for Ukrainian artists,  Mondriaan Fund, airWG and Artists at Risk.
