BOOK LAUNCH
Recollections N°2 by Gallery Magazine

The Guest-Architect will be present at the event, and available copies will be limited.

RECOLLECTIONS is the result of an extended dialogue between architect Bijoy Jain (Studio Mumbai) and art director Taku Satoh (TSDO inc.). This exchange ultimately brought forth a box, which serves as a container for a landscape of musings.

Similar to a cabinet of curiosities or the ever-evolving contents on the shelves of Studio Mumbai, RECOLLECTIONS presents itself as a non-referential, composite work. Within this space, diverse contents converge to establish new relationships, evoking thoughts and possibilities.

Brussels Gallery Weekend I 07-10 Sep 2023

Mark your calendars for Brussels Gallery Weekend
starting on September 7th!

Generation Brussels

This new edition is also an opportunity for BGW to have a new meeting point. The historic D’Ieteren building, designed in 1967 by architect René Stapels in a pure functionalist style, will be the central point of the event. It is where Generation Brussels, curated by art critic and curator Sam Steverlynck, will take place.

The 2023 edition of Brussels Gallery Weekend, curated by Sam Steverlynck, is entitled ‘Cet obscur objet du désir’ as a tribute to the Spanish surrealist cinematographer Luis Buñuel’s eponymous masterpiece. This dark fable of lust and love was the last movie of one of the greatest subversive minds in cinema. For Buñuel’s standards, it was one of his most convenient movies, though there are subtle moments of disruption and surrealist wit. The works on view do not specifically refer to the film’s theme, but rather to its ambivalent title, which unites contradictions between desire and repulsion, phantasms and impulses, the object and the abject, the familiar and the uncanny. It explores the tensions and dualities inherent in emotions and human experiences. The remarkable architecture of the D’Ieteren building will provide a captivating backdrop to this must-see event.

Neu im IKOB-Blog: Leseliste für ALL OUR YESTERDAYS

The Letters of Rosemary and Bernadette Mayer, 1976-1980

The Golden Book of Words.

Rosemary Mayer. Ways of Attaching

Para Psychics (both published by Buchhandlung Walther und Franz König, 2022) made it onto the longlist of the section “Art Books, Photography Books, Exhibition Catalogues.” The correspondence between the artist Rosemary Mayer and her recently deceased sister Bernadette Mayer, The Letters of Rosemary and Bernadette Mayer, 1976 – 1980 is among the 25 most beautiful German books and was selected one of the 5 most beautiful German books in the section “Literature.” All publications are available in the shop of Ludwig Forum Aachen.

The Letters of Rosemary and Bernadette Mayer, 1976-1989
Edited by Gillian Sneed, Marie Warsh

Two sisters, an artist and a poet, describe the contours of their lives among New York’s artistic avant-garde through an intimate collection of lettersThis collection of the correspondence between artist Rosemary Mayer (1943–2014) and poet Bernadette Mayer (born 1945) occurs between the years of 1976 and 1980, a period of rich creativity in New York’s artistic avant-garde, and one which includes the development of major bodies of work by the two women. Rosemary Mayer was creating sculptures, watercolors, books and “temporary monuments” from weather balloons and snow, while Bernadette Mayer was working on some of her best-known publications, including the book-length poem Midwinter Day and the poetry collection The Golden Book of Words. Spanning the worlds of Conceptual art, Postminimalism, feminism, the New York School, Language poetry and more, these letters elucidate the bonds of sisterhood through intimate exchanges about art, relationships and everyday life.

Rosemary Mayer. Ways of Attaching
Edited by Eva Birkenstock, Robert Leckie, Laura McLean-Ferris, Stephanie Weber

A comprehensive catalog on the work of New York artist Rosemary Mayer (1943–2014), Ways of Attaching provides an overview of the artist’s work, moving from early conceptual experiments of the late 1960s through to textile sculptures and drawings made in the early 1970s, before focusing on propositional and durational performances and temporary monuments made from 1977 to 1982. Highlighting Mayer’s formal interest in draping, knotting and tethering, Ways of Attaching focuses on the artist’s process of constructing real and imagined networks and constellations, in which friends and historical figures feature in expressions of affinity and attachment. It additionally features facsimile reproductions of Mayer’s writings and newly commissioned essays reflecting on her work and the influences of astronomy, feminism, the art scene in New York in the 1960s and ’70s, poetry, religion and Renaissance painting.

Kerstin Brätsch. Para Psychics
Edited by Bettina Funcke

During the pandemic Kerstin Brätsch shifted into a slow and inward-looking mode and made one hundred dense 11×14-inch large color-pencil drawings over the course of the last two years. The Para Psychics are time-collectors, each filled with an array of metaphysical traditions ranging from mythology, Tarot, symbolism, mysticism, astrology, numerology, spiritism to magic, Herbalism, and plant medicine. Organized in two parts, the first beautifully reproduces each drawing on its own spread, inviting the viewer into Brätsch’s fluidly interwoven cosmos. A second part puts the drawings into dialogue with newly commissioned texts and excerpted historical reprints, a constellation of ideas that shaped the artist’s thought process. We witness how Brätsch activated especially the female aspects of the worlds of mythology, art, social history, poetry, and anthropology. Another contribution comprises images that inspired the artist accompanied by Brätsch’s and Funcke’s annotations on how they are connected to the drawings and reproduced texts, pointing to the many interlinked and constantly transitioning worlds that make up the Para Psychics.

Contributions by Báyò Akómoláfé, Eva Birkenstock, Kerstin Brätsch, CAConrad, Bettina Funcke, Donna Haraway, Inanna, Lucretius, Kerstin Stakemeier, Zoe Stillass, Merlin Sheldrake & Michael Taussig.

Q-O2 News :: Midsummer

workspace for experimental music and sound art

Midsummer

The sun is reaching its peak: summer solstice is exactly only one hour away of us sending this newsletter. The build-up towards it during these last days was intense in our sunbathing mid-city office, still, seeing Brussels in this euphoric light, it ever remains a privilege. To celebrate this seasonal shift, we provide the launch of the new audio walk app Tracks, a post-residency presentation by Marija Rasa, a look back at Oscillation ::: o tempo in pictures, and a post-residency concert by Limpe Fuchs & Valérie Vivancos.

Audio walk
23 June – 16h: audio walk @ Kiosk Radio (Parc Royal/Warandepark) / 17h: presentation @ Beursschouwburg – free
Launch Tracks audio walks app
An initiative by Beursschouwburg, BNA-BBOT, Jubilee, Overtoon, Q-O2, and Soundtrackcity. Tracks is the new application to discover a variety of sound artists and musicians and the walks they create – seamlessly with your smartphone. On June 23rd, we will present Tracks to the public in Brussels, listening to a special audio walk while walking from Kiosk Radio (16h) to Beursschouwburg. This launch event features an immersive audio walking experience as well as a presentation in Beursschouwburg’s Zilveren Zaal (17h) and a drink + OUT LOUD concerts afterwards. Come prepared: download Tracks on your smartphone and bring headphones.

Post-residency presentation
28 June – 18h – free – @ Q-O2
Marija Rasa

In this upcoming presentation, Marija Rasa will introduce bee there – a new sound piece (in progress) in the ongoing Microlands series, consisting of compositions for multichannel audio setups. In these pieces, she sculpts fictional soundscapes out of delicate noise, electronic sounds, and field recordings of quiet places. This time, the main focus of the piece revolves around recordings of bees during both day and night, as well as the honey harvesting process. By attentively assembling the sounds of bees and electronic sounds using a micro montage approach, she aims to create aural spaces that rely on the interplay of movement, gestures, and temporal dynamics within physical space. The arrangement of eight loudspeakers becomes a symbolic body that mediates between the sounds and their unfolding journey. There will be an opportunity to savor the harvested honey after the presentation to celebrate the intricate wonders of the natural world!

JUIN 2023

JUNE 2022

“From the streets to the screens: video clips and political criticism in Lebanon” 🎥

Discussion with Noel and Michelle Keserwany, moderated by Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez

Friday, June 30, from 7 to 8:30 pm 💬

At KADIST Paris (free event, upon registration only, in French)

Noel and Michelle Keserwany explore the potential of audiovisual content, particularly video clips, as a medium for their social and activist commitment in Lebanon.

These videos, which punctuate the country’s various fractures over the last ten years, from the economic crisis to the recent explosion in Beirut, function as a satirical chronicle and rallying space for politicized but neglected youth.

These productions give rise to interventions in the public space, conceived as filmed performances, using the means of popular culture such as song or animation, to avoid censorship. This narrative work led them to Les Chenilles, their first medium-length film, and has also transformed their video practice and sculpted their artistic approach.

The evening program
7-8:30pm

On this evening, Noel and Michelle Keserwany will describe their artistic and collaborative trajectory: from their first video clip, made in 2012 and going viral when they were 21 and 23, to their film Les Chenilles, presented at the Lyon Biennale in 2022 and named best short film at the Berlinale 2023.

Their presentation, interspersed with excerpts, will be followed by a conversation with Nataša Petrešin-Bachelez, head of artistic and cultural programming at the Cité internationale des Arts, and a Q&A with the audience.

Michelle wrote the film, while Michelle and Noel directed it, with Noel also playing one of the lead roles.

In recent years, the sisters have been busy developing their first political documentary, Slow Burn, a co-production between Lebanon and France. 10 jaar Herbert Foundation
20 juni 2013 – 20 juni 2023

Tentoonstellingszicht As if it Could. Ouverture, 2013 (Foto: Philippe De Gobert)

De titel van de eerste tentoonstelling, As if it Could.

In a year-long trajectory Level Five and SB34 will work together with artists in and around their organisations to create the right conditions for artistic practices to grow. Through workshops, studio visits and a public event, we will lay the basis for a supportive ecology for artists. By intertwining the different growing art scenes in Brussels our project brings mutual reinforcement.
This bi-communal project is supported by CultuurCulture, Fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles and Vlaamse Overheid.

SB34 is a Brussels based non-profit organization providing qualitative and affordable artistic production studios, workshops and equipment. We also manage two exhibition spaces in which local, international artists and art workers are invited to connect and collaborate to enhance the long term means of production, visibility and sustainability.

🔎 Focus on Shezad Dawood – Events around the exhibition

Focus on
Shezad Dawood

Get ready to be surprised by the versatile work of British artist Shezad Dawood. In Night in the Garden of Love, he engages in a dialogue with Afro-American musician, composer, and homo universalis Yusef Lateef. The result? An exhibition centered around creative collaborations, where analogue and digital elements enhance each other, and where several of your senses – sight, hearing, and smell – are engaged to allow you to fully experience the artwork.

Scroll further and delve into some of the collaborations Dawood undertook to create his new work, and discover the upcoming events planned at WIELS in relation to the exhibition.

VISIT NIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF LOVE

Alhena Katsof on Yusef Lateef

The shapes and plants depicted in Yusef Lateef’s drawings are woven throughout the exhibition. Dawood, in collaboration with Alhena Katsof, curator of Yusef Lateef’s legacy, and his widow Ayesha Lateef, carefully selected 16 original drawings that will be displayed for the first time in Europe at WIELS.

In this video, Alhena Katsof shares insights into Lateef’s work and life, offering her perspective on the meaning and importance of his artistic contributions.

Dawood x Ahluwalia

Textiles play a prominent role in Dawood’s exhibition. Based on a shared interest in textile upcycling, Dawood collaborated with London-based fashion designer Priya Ahluwalia, who explored Dawood’s textile archive for the exhibition. The archive includes Romanian Gypsy skirts, Japanese denim, and a variety of colorful printed fabrics from the 1970s originating from Pakistan, Dawood’s ancestral homeland.

Ahluwalia created two costumes for the key character, the Mutant. They will be showcased in the exhibition and worn by co-choreographer and dancer Wan-Lun Yu during performances on various Sundays throughout the exhibition.

MOVING TO A NEW LOCATION | OPENING 2 JULY – BRIGITTE LOUTER

View this email in your browser

P//////AKT is moving to Pakhuis Wilhelmina

Twenty years ago P/////AKT opened its doors at Zeeburgerpad 53. It’s been an amazing ride, which came to an end with the exhibition series Turning to Dust and Bones last April.

We are happy to announce that we will now move on to new horizons – a room with a view at the beautiful Pakhuis Wilhelmina. The space may be a bit small in comparison to the old one but has everything we need to continue in the same spirit – starting with a solo presentation by Brigitte Louter that will open on Sunday 2 July (more information below). New to the program are the Special Cases: a series of collectible ‘dossiers’ that will come in an archive box as well as a downloadable pdf and will contain text, documentation and materials related to the artists’ surrounding thoughts and the presentations themselves. We expect to have the first edition ready for you by the end of the summer. Until then:

Please come see us at:

P/////AKT – Pakhuis Wilhelmina
Groenhoedenveem 2
(entrance around the corner at Veemkade)
1019 BL Amsterdam

PLEASE NOTE: our old location will still exist as a studio facility as well as our postal address for the time being under the name of Stichting PAKT (PAKT Foundation)

Brigitte Louter – opening Sunday 2 July

Brigitte Louter – The model organism and her plastic response

Opening: Sunday 2 July, 16 – 20 hrs
Exhibition open: 6 July – 3 September, Thursday – Sunday, 14 – 18 hrs
PLEASE NOTE: from 6 – 31 August by appointment only!

We are extremely happy that we found Brigitte Louter willing to kick-off our program at the new location. She participated in our P/////AKTPOOL program in 2019 and we have been actively following her practice since. From her residency at de Ateliers onwards she has been researching the life and times of Daphnia (also commonly known as water fleas) from which she developed a new series of works, part of which will be shown at P/////AKT as an installation and will also find its way into Special Case #1.

The transparent and responsive nature of water fleas makes them bound to be nature documentary stars. A great gauge to test water quality. A perfect model organism. With many key assets like the production of resting eggs. A resting egg in an ephippium, surrounded by a protective casing. Development suspended. A time capsule sinking to the bottom of a weedy pond to stay there between one season and 700 years, waiting for favorable circumstances. Covered by sediment until extracted as part of a sediment core. A flexible connection between times. The ambient temperature and sound filtered by the enclosure, providing a comfortable stability of temperature and a muffled echo. Like the adaptive bellows protecting the joint of an articulated bus. A flexible structure stuck between two rigid sections. Increasing the bus’s capacity while ensuring smooth twists and turns to maintain passenger comfort. From its bulkhead mount and capture strip to the roof cover or false ceiling. Her upper hip booth mounting. Tongue in groove extrusion mounting. Fastener free pocket. A belly that continuously flexes and protects.
In a brief moment the flexing of the bellow becomes an impossible extension when freed from the rigid sections and load, and the water flea displays an unprecedented behavior, moving the observer.

For those who keep us on the bright side

Polina Doroshenko & Stefaniia Dobrianska

Part of the airWG Series

In this exhibition Ukrainian WG artist-in-residence Polina Doroshenko presents drawings and texts reflecting her personal journey after leaving her home in Kyiv with her young daughter Stefaniia.

Opening: Friday 16 June 17:00-19:00 at puntWG

How do you keep going on when your home is in a war zone?

How do you protect your child and take care of yourself when everything brings

to mind the writings of George Orwell?….

I began to make sketchbooks with drawings and reflections, a first-hand

format to visualise my thoughts, ideas and anxieties. These’ visual

diaries’ became an important part of my life with my daughter Stefaniia.

Somewhere between diving deep into darkness and simple everyday’s

happiness. In this exhibition, at the end of my airWG residency I’m

sharing our personal story on our continuing journey.

Polina & Stefaniia’s WG residency is supported by Dutch Fund for Ukrainian artists,  Mondriaan Fund, airWG and Artists at Risk.
