Performance Katalin Ladik
So, 19.11.2023, um 11 Uhr (Dauer: ca. 30 Minuten)
Ludwig Forum Aachen

Performance Katalin Ladik
Sunday, Nov 19, 2023 at 11am (Duration: approx. 30 minutes)
Ludwig Forum Aachen

As part of her exhibition Ooooooooo-pus, Katalin Ladik will return to Aachen on November 19, 2023 and will activate her work Follow Me into Mythology (2017), which is currently on display in the exhibition. The textile work was originally conceived as a score for a performance that took place in 2017 in the context of documenta 14 at the Megaron concert hall in Athens, and takes the mythological figure of Ariadne as a starting point to question the contradictions and complexities of the female principle and established gender roles.

Katalin Ladik (born 1942 in Novi Sad) is a poet, visual artist and actress. Her visual and acoustic poetry, performances and body art are based on the intermedial reinterpretation of body and language, sound and visuality. Since the late 1970s she has been involved in several international exhibitions, most recently at Manifesta 14 in Pristina (2022), documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens (2017), Shedhalle Zurich (2018) at IVAM Valencia (2019). Her works can be found in the collections of the Tate, the MoMA in New York and the MACBA in Barcelona.

Q-O2 news :: High and Dry

workspace for experimental music and sound art

High and Dry

OK: this cruel seasonal shift has clearly manifested itself. Fortunately, to counter accompanying mood swings, we have the necessary opportunities to welcome you to our high and dry headquarters the coming weeks, and some beautiful Oscillation 2023 memories.

First up is Second Sundays #44 with Gerard Herman – rumor has it that his songs are sometimes hummed in the Q-O2 office – who will present a listening session around “ethnic recordings. The ones that give me the goosebumps.” Followed by a post-residency performance by Constanza Castagnet using voice and computer, open studio days with Christophe Albertijn and a workshop on Hardware hacking and experimental electronics with Magno Caliman.

Release
Oscillation ::: o tempo

Q-O2 / umland editions is pleased to present 4 split releases of live recordings from our festival Oscillation ::: o tempo that took place in April this year. Relive the moment or hear what you missed – beautiful and profound memories, they are:

Issue 1: Ameel Brecht / Olga Kokcharova
Issue 2: Maria Komarova / Limpe Fuchs & Valérie Vivancos
Issue 3: John McCowen / Nur/Se performs Éliane Radigue

Second Sundays #44

Gerard Herman

For its forty fourth edition, Second Sundays invites artist Gerard Herman, for a session of “ethnic recordings. The ones that give me the goosebumps.”
Gerard Herman, lives and works. Has a lot of free time and needs a lot of free space for it. He’s currently here and there, besides that, in the past, and what not, etc.

Post-residency concert
17 November – 18h-19h – free – @Q-O2
Constanza Castagnet

Distante

Constanza will present a live performance using voice and computer, based on a series of tango songs from her great grandfather. They were manipulated and transformed with the idea of going beneath the surface and capturing sonic nuances resisting the conventional notation and style of tango. The distortion and manipulation of materials plays an important role in revealing the distance between traditional composition and a non conventional approach to an expansive idea of music. The piece will evolve through improvisation with computer, pre-recorded sounds, some live electronics, and experimental singing. Taking sounds from the past into the present, the original melodies gently distort and degrades, accommodating to a kind of balance between production and loss.

Open studio days
29 November, 6, 13 & 20 December – 10h-13h – @ Q-O2
Christophe Albertijn – HUIS

This residency will focus on organising the material from the last 3 years since the start of the HUIS label, which consists of not only the recordings which have been released digitally, but also video images, photography, texts, unreleased recordings and more. With the aim of making a publication, these materials will be revisited and expanded in an open studio where these materials will be shown and elucidated on regular moments during the residency, creating a dialogue between the public, contributors and myself.

Studio visits are also possible on other moments on appointment: please email Christophe at huisklank[AT]gmail[DOT]com.

Workshop
2 December – 11h-17h –  @ Q-O2 – €15/20
Hardware hacking and experimental electronics with Magno Caliman

In this workshop we will experiment with the electronic circuits as materials for experimental artistic practices. Making use of simple alligator clips and batteries, we’ll modify and hack scrap speakers and motors, turning them into synthesizers, percussion instruments, and kinetic sculptures. In the process we’ll learn, in practice, basic electronic concepts such as electrical conductivity and electromagnetism, and how they relate to audio and sound generation.

From a discussion on notions such as the Brazillian “gambiarra” and programmed obsolescence, we’ll also modify commercial electronic devices exploring the practice of circuit bending, altering the circuits of devices that in other circumstances would be obsolete and/or discarded.

Workshop in English – no prior knowledge is needed for participation. Information on materials will be sent by email to the participants after registration. Registration via email at

Fee 20€ / 15€ (reduced)

Workshop in the framework of tekhnē, supported by Creative Europe.

Opening exhibition David Claerbout “Birdsong”

We are pleased to invite you to the opening of the solo exhibition by David Claerbout.

Opening Thursday, November 9th
6 – 8pm

David Claerbout

Birdsong

David Claerbout, Still from Backwards Growing Tree, 2023
(single channel video projection, colour, stereo sound, 5 years)

Galerie Greta Meert is pleased to present its first collaboration with Belgian artist David Claerbout. Birdsong is the title of this solo exhibition, spread over three floors of the gallery, showing the distinctive facets of Claerbout's practice.

Opening the exhibition is the work Birdcage (2023), a video work depicting the disruption of a picturesque, tranquil garden park, in full bloom, by an explosion in excruciating slow motion, both unsettling and comforting to the viewer.

In line with Claerbout's ideas on anti-anthropocentrism, the Glossy Starling and the Song Thrush are given a central role, with a strong focus on the change in aura they undergo in panicked states. As we witness the gradual exchange of the energetic qualities of violence and peace, Birdcage explores how memory completes our visual perception, manifesting that the human subject is, in essence, time.

Backwards Growing Tree (2023), depicts a solitary tree in the countryside near Salsomaggiore Terme (Parma region, Italy). Entirely digital, and paradoxically handmade, the tree is tracked, in reverse, over a 5-year time span. Starting from an attempt to counter the linear aspect of time, Backwards Growing Tree shows us clock time in a mirror.

Claerbout’s work often implies a very painterly approach, a pictorial quality that is clearly continued throughout the exhibition. It is only through a more contemplative, still, involvement of the viewer that the works reveal their true nature.

Works on paper fill the last space of the exhibition. Texas Border Piece (2023) is a series of nine works in greyscale capturing a devastating encounter of the US Border Patrol with Haitians attempting to cross the Texas / Mexico border to build new lives. David Claerbout laid eyes on press photos of this event in 2022, and was struck by its faux-pictorial style, in stark contrast to the horror of the incident and the conventions of photojournalism.

This series is joined by works complimenting the works on the concluding other parts of the exhibition – elaborate studies that support the video works, dissecting and providing insight to both artist and viewer.

ARTIST TALK + KONZERT:

Artist-Talk 19 Uhr.
anschließendes Konzert 21 Uhr.

Gewalt sind DM1, Helen Henfling, Jasmin Rilke und Patrick Wagner. Ihr German Wut Wave verdichtet die Unmöglichkeit und Unentrinnbarkeit der menschlichen Existenz.
File under: Post-Punk, NDW, Industrial.

Wer nicht hören will muss fühlen.

– Jody Korbach

Die Ausstellung Fine people on both sides, and me. ist noch bis zum 03. Dezember im Kunstverein zu sehen.

BEZOEK STUDENTEN LUCAVISUAL DESIGN

Touch Me Not

P/////AKT is proud to present a brand new work by Amsterdam-based artist Christian Friedrich, with whom we previously collaborated in 2011Touch Me Not is part of a series of reliefs in which he exploits and submits to chance by breaking ceramic tiles into pieces, before assembling them into forms and figures on background planes.

The work of Christian Friedrich (b. 1977, Freiburg, Germany) has been shown, among others, at Haus Mödrath, Kerpen, Haus N, Athens, KW Institute for Contemporary Art, Berlin, Cabinet Gallery, London, Chapter Arts Center, Cardiff, NYU, New York, PS120, Berlin, Cobra Museum for Modern Art, Amstelveen, Goethe-Institut Amsterdam, Grazer Kunstverein, De Hallen, Haarlem, De Appel, Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Städtische Galerie Karlsruhe and Kunsthaus Baselland. In 2017, Friedrich received the Cobra Art Prize.

Residue at P/////AKT Zeeburgerpad

Anika Schwarzlose and Elena Khurtova, curated by Masha Domracheva

While P/////AKT has moved its program to a new location, the old building at Zeeburgerpad 53 is still up and providing space for studios and projects. From 18 November until 16 December Anika Schwarzlose and Elena Khurtova are presenting the second part of their new project Residue, which first premiered at the Amsterdam Museum within the current edition of Refresh Amsterdam – ‘War and Conflict’.

For Residue the artists engaged with the history of the Hembrug weapons factory in Zaandam. Having been the Netherlands’ biggest weapons factory between 1904 and 2003, it played an important role in many international conflicts, including the suppression of the independence struggles in Indonesia during the colonial wars. Currently, the area is in redevelopment in order to revive it for civilian use, but the violence that used to be exported from here has not disappeared; the soils beneath the former factory contain contaminating remnants of the weapons manufacturing. An extensive process of soil remediation tries to cure such contamination. An act that represents attempts of cleansing, but can just as well be read as the covering up of an uncomfortable past.

Opening tomorrow Stéphanie Baechler – Charlotte Eta Mumm: 3-7 PM

Sunday November 5, 3 – 7 PM

Opening of the exhibition Espèces d’Espace, a duo show by Stéphanie Baechler & Charlotte Eta Mumm.

Stéphanie Baechler & Charlotte Eta Mumm

Espèces d’Espace

November 05 – December 10, 2023
Vernissage November 05, 3 – 7 pm

The title of the exhibition Espèces d’Espace refers to a book by Georges Perec (1974) ‘Prière d’insérer’, Espèces d’espaces Species of Spaces, 1974, in which he states ‘L’espace de notre vie n’est ni continu, ni homogène, ni isotrope.

Stéphanie Baechler (° 1983, Meyriez, CH) lives and works in Amsterdam and Switzerland. She has exhibited at MAHF, Fribourg, Kunsthalle Fri Art Fribourg, Centre d’art Pasquart Biel in Switzerland, Arti et Amicitiae Amsterdam and Modemuseum Antwerp. Her work is in public and private collections, including HEAD-Genva, Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and MAHF Fribourg.
Baechler is interested in the interplay between craft and technology; the complex and often ambiguous relationship between handmade and machine-made results. Textile and clay are the main materials she uses in her sculptures and installations. Her work is characterized by a sensitive, intuitive and process-oriented approach to materials.

Charlotte Eta Mumm (°1980, DE) is exhibiting for the first time in our gallery. She lives and works in Amsterdam. Her works have been shown in Städtische Galerie Nordhorn (DE), Phoinix, Bratislava (SK), Museum Brot und Kunst Ulm (DE), Keramiekmuseum Princessehof, Leuwarden (DE), Arti et Amicitiae Amsterdam, Kunstenfestival Watou (BE), Sculpture Quadrennial, Riga (LV).
She works with a variety of materials and crosses the boundaries between painting, drawing, sculpture and situational settings. Her work moves between abstract and figurative, questioning the presence of things, inside/outside perspectives and the definition of space and surface. Conflicting perceptions and paradoxes are important aspects in her artistic work. They question the certainty of images and concepts.

RUINED MUSA: soft vernissage & closing event

[n0dine] RUINED MUSA
Sara Manente, Deborah Robbiano, Sébastien Tripod, Muna Mussie, Christophe Albertijn, Agnese Krivade

Friday 03.10.2023 – soft vernissage

By presenting RUINED, with Deborah Robbiano and Sébastien Tripod, and -a research phase of -MUSA, with Muna Mussie and Christophe Albertijn, Sara Manente imagined the space of n0dine as an incubator where the two projects would grow during October and November 2023. This installation fuses different aspects of her work: the potential of mycelium as a building material and a metaphor of fertile ruin, the concept of autoimmunity, the relationship between old and new technologies in the ecosystem of the live arts.

On Friday 3 November from 8-10pm, we organise a soft vernissage in n0dine. For this occasion, the two collaborative projects merge in the form of an oracle, where different voices, including that of the audience, can formulate questions in relation to the projects.

you can visit the expo by appointment : n0dine, Rue de Laekensestraat 105, 1000 Brussels

On Saturday 11 November, we organise a closing event for the expo RUINED MUSA and, if mushrooms grew from the installation, we will eat them together. To celebrate the end of this growing stage at n0dine, Agnese Krivade makes a special drink with chaga mushroom collected in her forest. It is a last public moment where you can interact with the installation, and the matter: mycelium. Afterwards, we walk on to rile* bookshop for the launch of ROT 01 and an evening program.
