May the Dawn of the Winter Solstice chase the Dark Away

Out with the old and in with the new! Q-O2 is ready to accompany you through the upcoming gloomy, frosty-kissed days:

Opening the year is Loup Uberto, our current resident who is the guest for our Second Sundays #46. Following are two events in the framework of La Semaine Du Son: Jeroen Uyttendaele is hosting a workshop on DIY hydrophones, while later that week Attila Faravelli and Ryoko Akama explore the diverse facets of water through sound art with a presentation, demonstration and discussion. On January 30, students of La Cambre present SIBYLLINE PLAYLAND: works were composed in the framework of the Création Sonore et Musique Expérimentale course at the ENSAV La Cambre, in partnership with Q-O2. And lastly, Felisha Ledesma is hosting a workshop Introduction to Modular Synthesis (using Automatonism), be quick – places are very limited! A lot of these activities are happening within the context of tekhnē, our new European collaboration exploring the emancipatory potential of technology in music and sound art. To stay up to date about everything tekhnē-related, you can subscribe to the newsletter.

Second Sundays #46
14 January – 17h (doors 16h30) –  @ Q-O2 – free
Loup Uberto

A short dive into some documentary experiences, field recordings carried out in Italy, France, Tunisia, Tchad, Albania, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Romania, Portugal, Cuba… for the past 4 or 5 years, extracts from a long-term archival work which will include a book, a background of digital and discographic recordings, a phenomenology of singing and the artisanal processing of a large series of silver photographs… The sound pieces will be broadcasted on a small acousmonium together with some small talk and a delicious Grappa cocktail!

mmile : Attila Faravelli + Ryoko Akama

This multidisciplinary project aims to explore the different forms that water can take in its physical, symbolic and spiritual states, in a constant dialogue between the ancient and the contemporary, reinterpreting and promoting the rediscovery of water culture in different territories and traditions. In a presentation, demonstration and discussion with the audience, Ryoko Akama will talk about the ideas and methods she uses in her installations and performances, and how they have evolved and changed over the last decade. Attila Faravelli will present a selection of his Field Recording work as well as a session on the current state of his collaboration with Ryoko in the context of Aural Tools, a project that plays with a series of simple sound-producing objects.

SIBYLLINE PLAYLAND – students of La Cambre

We are cyborgs.
We invite you to our cyborg tale.
With sound, let’s invent a cyborgian language.

All works were composed in the frame of the Création Sonore et Musique Expérimentale course at the ENSAV La Cambre, in partnership with Q-O2 in Brussels. The module proposes a special frame for listening, experimenting and reflecting around sound art, through the topic of the machine in relation to the body. The starting point of the course is Donna Haraway’s Cyborg Manifesto. The professors are Myriam Pruvot, Caroline Profanter, Julia Eckhardt and Céline Gillain.

Call for contributions
In the Field 2 – CRiSAP

In the light of In The Field 2 CRiSAP calls for papers, workshops, performances, and fixed media works. This year, the international symposium In The Field from 2013 is revisited, an event that focused on contemporary practices and their historical precedents, how field recordings are distributed as well as how they are heard. Across a range of approaches and creative works, the symposium examined audible and inaudible soundscapes and mapped urban, rural and digital field.

Release
Het BlokfluitAsiel

Het BlokfluitAsiel is a collaboration between instrument builder Lukas De Clerck, composer Angélica Castelló and music teachers Katelijne Lanneau and Matthias Verniers. Their pupils (recorders from the music academy of Jette/Brussels and organists from the music academy of the DG, department St. Vith) performed the piece, invited to explore their own creative approaches to sound, improvisation, composition and performance. The musical piece was composed collectively, based on a concept by Angélica Castelló, aiming to establish an intense connection between Lukas De Clerck’s piece/machine AirBag/14Holes, the organ and recorders.

This piece is accompanied by an electroacoustic piece by Angélica Castelló, drawing inspiration from the atmospheres cultivated during the work on Het BlokfluitAsiel. The young artists involved in this project often likened the immense sound they collectively generated to that of a gentle monster.

The CD will be released together with Meakusma on December 15, and will be available via our umland website.

21 Tracks for the 21st Century: Marnie Slater

GLEAN and Q-O2 join forces with 21 Tracks for the 21st Century, a series of playlists in which we ask our guests: what music does this century need? Each time, we invite one artist, thinker or musician to prepare a playlist of those sounds, songs and pieces of music that will best arm their listeners with the tools to approach what is left of this young century.

This edition’s artist: Marnie Slater.

Opening soon: Jef Geys & Oscar Murillo at WIELS 📅

FR     EN     NL

WIELS kicks off the new year with an ambitious survey exhibition of the work of Jef Geys

Always critical of image and language, Jef Geys aimed to expose “the patterns and structures behind what one thinks one sees,” and encouraged self-reflection and scepticism. WIELS takes this aspiration as a starting point for the large-scale survey of Geys’ heterogeneous work, enriched by documents from the artist’s archives.

EXHIBITION: 02_02______19_05_2024
OPENING: THU_01_02, 18:00-22:00

“For me, the main thing is to express my problems as clearly as possible, in a form and in a manner that feels obvious. Whether it’s an object, a project, or a painting, it doesn’t matter. I try to gain insight into things, and sometimes, to gain insight, I have to make something, and sometimes I have to write it down, and sometimes I have to blow up the museum to do it. To gain insight into things for myself. This is the self-study I’m working on.”

____Jef Geys

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

After his memorable intervention in the 2017 thematic exhibition The Absent Museum, WIELS is proud to invite back Oscar Murillo with Massesa solo exhibition that establishes a cartography of mass — liquid, material, sonic — across a large-scale installation.

“I always want to develop a practice where if everything collapses, falls apart, I can still make work. My practice, even though it has expanded and involves different paths of engagement, remains rooted in drawing. Even in the painterly or the performative, the core is drawing. And the painting is born out of drawing.”

____Oscar Murillo in Glean, Winter 2023

Program

19:00-21:30
Triple Books Launch & Live Stream Art

During the Expanded Publishing Fest, we will be launching three special INC publications:

  • Screentime Airtime Facetime, our first ever event-as-book, edited by Carolina Pinto and Senka Milutinovic. This publication on forms of hybridity in culture is the final result of our research project Going Hybrid.

  • Semiotics of the End by Alessandro Sbordoni is the first book in our new series Network Notions, a pamphlet-like series that are produced, printed, and distributed entirely in-house by the INC.
  • De bevrijding van het mecenaat, edited by Sepp Eckenhaussen, is the 49th book in the most prolific INC series Theory on Demand. This book, published in collaboration with Platform Beeldende Kunst, critically examines the rising power of philanthropists in the Dutch visual arts.

In between the publication launches, friends and collaborators will join us on stage for conversations about expanded publishing. Some of the publishers presenting their work at the Micro Book Fair will join us to talk about the invisible but crucial work behind the final publication; UKRAiNATV will be making a stream art contribution; and INC co-founders Geert Lovink and Emilie Randoe will talk about how it all started, 20 years ago.
This program will be broadcast live on The Void, an audiovisual podcast platform for experimental publishing and artistic research started by the INC in 2022.

19:00-21:30
Micro Book Fair

In parallel to the live program, the Micro Book Fair will take place. Independent cultural publishers from the INC network will present their publications. The participating publishers are:

  • HumDrumPress
  • Institute of Network Cultures
  • Outline – Publishing Platform and Floating Collective
  • Platform BK
  • Starfish Books
  • Ghost Town Publishers
  • ErrantJournal
  • Valiz

You can read more about the concept of the Micro Book Fair and the work of each participating publisher here. Make sure to bring some cash and a big bag to take those beautiful publications home!

22:00-03:00
Club Night

After the live program and book fair, the Expanded Publishing Fest will turn into a club night.

Lamina

Kommen Sie einfach vorbei!

HYPERKUNST

Katalin Ladik Ooooooooo-pus
07.10.2023–10.03.2024

Ulrike Müller Monument to My Paper Body

Mit Carla Accardi, Laurie Anderson, Belkis Ayón, Lygia Clark, Nancy Graves, Alex Hay, Alfred Jensen, Bertram Jesdinsky, Jasper Johns, Imi Knoebel, Christopher Knowles, Svetlana Kopystiansky, Sol LeWitt, Lee Lozano, Rune Mields, Klaus Paier, Margit Palme, Judy Pfaff, Robert Rauschenberg, Dorothea Rockburne, Miriam Schapiro, Peter Young und Fahr El-Nissa Zeid.

(Marlene Streeruwitz)

Katalin Ladik Ooooooooo-pus
Oct 6, 2023 – March 10, 2024

The Ludwig Forum Aachen is pleased to present Ooooooooo-pus, the first survey exhibition of Katalin Ladik (b. 1942 in Novi Sad, lives in Budapest). Her radical approach to poetry, sound, and performance established her as a key figure in the artistic avant-gardes of former Yugoslavia. Drawing on her career-spanning interest in language and corporeality, the exhibition provides for the first time a comprehensive overview of Ladik’s work from the late 1960s to the present. The scores of her visual and phonic poems set to music manifest themselves in the exhibition space as collages, textile works, photographs and objects and, together with selected sound compositions, open up a soundscape carried by the extraordinary range of the artist’s voice. Curated by Fanny Hauser and Hendrik Folkerts. The exhibition is co-organized in cooperation with Haus der Kunst München and Moderna Museet, Stockholm.

Ulrike Müller Monument to My Paper Body
09.12.2023 – 09.06.2024, Mural 09.12.2023 – 09.12.2025

For the exhibition project Monument to My Paper Body, New York-based Ulrike Müller has conceived a site-specific mural on the two facing, fourteen-meter-high walls in the Ludwig Forum Aachen. This intervention is accompanied by collages, drawings, enamel paintings, monotypes, and textiles by the artist, which are presented in dialog with selected works from the collections at the Ludwig Forum Aachen. With Carla Accardi, Laurie Anderson, Belkis Ayón, Lygia Clark, Nancy Graves, Alex Hay, Alfred Jensen, Bertram Jesdinsky, Jasper Johns, Imi Knoebel, Christopher Knowles, Svetlana Kopystiansky, Sol LeWitt, Lee Lozano, Rune Mields, Klaus Paier, Margit Palme, Judy Pfaff, Robert Rauschenberg, Dorothea Rockburne, Miriam Schapiro, Peter Young, Fahr El-Nissa Zeid.

The exhibition picks up on the Double Wall series (2004-2008) initiated by Harald Kunde, in which artists were invited to artistically activate the two monumental walls of the museum on a rotating basis. Ulrike Müller’s presentation marks the return of the series, in an expanded form, as a fixture in the museum’s exhibition program. Monument to My Paper Body will be accompanied by a program of events and the production of a publication. Curated by Eva Birkenstock.

Die Schmerzmacherin.
Reading with Marlene Streeruwitz and the actress Melanie Kretschmann
followed by a conversation with Eva Birkenstock and Hermann Müller (in German)
Thursday, January 25, 7pm

“The reading from Die Schmerzmacherin. is intended to verify that literature is the medium that can encompass the complexity of our lives in the world. By reading, readers can gather experiences which they need not experience themselves, and can hold these select experiences up against their own. The reading of the second dialogue between the mother and daughter [from Tage im Mai.], in turn, will show how difficult it is to speak about love, and how we disclose our feelings to each other more by leaving things out. This dialogue also shows, however, how loving can succeed, but how we are urged to pay less heed to these forms of loving.” (Marlene Streeruwitz)

Admission: 10 Euro / 7 Euro

Workshop and Discussion with Marlene Streeruwitz (in German)
Friday, January 26, 6pm

“Particularly in times of slogans and banners, the question of who is speaking how from where is important. It is about everyday texts and how, as a matter of course, dignity is bestowed—or usually taken away. How we can speak empathically and stand up to the ecpathic speaking of the public.” (Marlene Streeruwitz)

Happy holidays & Best wishes for 2024 !
