Espèces d’Espace

November 05 – December 10, 2023
Vernissage November 05, 3 – 7 pm

The title of the exhibition Espèces d’Espace refers to a book by Georges Perec (1974) ‘Prière d’insérer’, Espèces d’espaces Species of Spaces, 1974, in which he states ‘L’espace de notre vie n’est ni continu, ni homogène, ni isotrope.

Stéphanie Baechler (° 1983, Meyriez, CH) lives and works in Amsterdam and Switzerland. She has exhibited at MAHF, Fribourg, Kunsthalle Fri Art Fribourg, Centre d’art Pasquart Biel in Switzerland, Arti et Amicitiae Amsterdam and Modemuseum Antwerp. Her work is in public and private collections, including HEAD-Genva, Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and MAHF Fribourg.
Baechler is interested in the interplay between craft and technology; the complex and often ambiguous relationship between handmade and machine-made results. Textile and clay are the main materials she uses in her sculptures and installations. Her work is characterized by a sensitive, intuitive and process-oriented approach to materials.

Charlotte Eta Mumm (°1980, DE) is exhibiting for the first time in our gallery. She lives and works in Amsterdam. Her works have been shown in Städtische Galerie Nordhorn (DE), Phoinix, Bratislava (SK), Museum Brot und Kunst Ulm (DE), Keramiekmuseum Princessehof, Leuwarden (DE), Arti et Amicitiae Amsterdam, Kunstenfestival Watou (BE), Sculpture Quadrennial, Riga (LV).
She works with a variety of materials and crosses the boundaries between painting, drawing, sculpture and situational settings. Her work moves between abstract and figurative, questioning the presence of things, inside/outside perspectives and the definition of space and surface. Conflicting perceptions and paradoxes are important aspects in her artistic work. They question the certainty of images and concepts.

Finissage Childhood, love and money

Item from the Magic Box (092.2.0547, Box 116), among the David Wojnarowicz Papers, at the Fales Library & Special Collections, New York University. Photo courtesy by the artist.

Sunday 29 October, 17 – 19 hrs
(exhibition open from 14 hrs)

As a finale to Childhood, Love and Money, Martín La Roche presents the Musée Légitime – a museum within a hat. Each artist in the collection contributes a small or immaterial piece that can fit inside the hat while worn by the artist. On various occasions, the artist curates a selection of pieces, tucks them inside the hat, and goes for a walk while wearing the museum. When the opportunity arises, he reveals the pieces one by one, sharing their stories and those of the authors. Currently, there are 172 pieces within eleven museum buildings (hats).

For this closing act, a special selection of pieces pays homage to David Wojnarowicz’s “Magic Box.” Found beneath the New York artist’s bed after his 1992 passing due to AIDS complications, this enigmatic wooden fruit box and its contents, which Wojnarowicz never addressed in his lifetime, serve as the starting point for Martin La Roche’s contemplations about childhood memories and queer space.

Childhood, love and money – Last week

Childhood, love and money

5 October – 29 October
Thursday – Sunday, 14 – 18 hrs

Of emperor Nero dressed in green
it is said
that he watched the chariot races
through an emerald
to protect his eyes
against the sun.
Of medieval scribes centuries later
it is said
that they rested their eyes
from copying their manuscripts
by staring at an emerald.

Childhood, love and money features works by the historical conceptual artist Ulises Carrión, curator and writer Christina Li, and artists Martin La Roche and Vincent Verhoef. The exhibition’s title draws upon associations with the colour green. Over the centuries the colour green has been linked to various transient aspects of life: childhood, love, hope, luck, play, chance and money. Historically greens remained chemically unstable, in painting, in dyes and in meanings. While the colours would gradually lose their vibrancy, our associations with them would undergo a transformation. This unstable nature of the colour green might provide a loose and flexible framework to think about the works presented in the show.

Vincent Verhoef, co-organizer of Amsterdam art space rongwrong, received a carte-blanche to create a presentation in which his own practice formed the starting point to invite others. This exhibition is a continuation of a series of collaborative projects that took place in the former P/////AKTPOOL from March 2022 through April 2023. As a celebration of initiative-initiated exhibitions – a celebration of the initiative, of its dedicated organizers and of the many talented artists that they (re)present and care for – this next episode is focusing on the artist as an artist and organizer.

Publication – Turning to Dust and Bones

Our latest publication Turning to Dust and Bones is now available here on our website and also on view in our bookshop!

Turning to Dust and Bones (April 2022 – April 2023) was a series of six consecutive solo exhibitions loosely dealing with the subconscious, memory and the traces of being uprooted. It featured Anders Dickson, Koen Kloosterhuis, Kristina Sedlerova-Villanen, Aslan Goisum, Giulia Cenci and Rodrigo Hernández.

The public program was moderated by DIG – the Internet Guide of literature magazine De Gids, with editors Asha Karami, in charge of selecting contributors for additional texts and events, and Fabienne Rachmadiev, who closely followed the program in order to write the central essay for the series.

Turning to Dust and Bones constituted the last part of a trilogy of exhibition series that began in 2020 with The Space Conductors Are Among Us and continued with Am I an Object in 2021.

In Medias Res

Still buzzing after last weekend’s post-residency concert by Arthur Chambry & friends and ASUNA’s Second Sundays, this newsletter announces at eleventh hour a post-residency presentation on Friday by Lale Rodgarkia-Dara, at which she will present an essay in process, followed by a short concert. It also reminds you of our teaming-up with KRAAK this Sunday for a night of concerts by the great Eve Aboulkheir and Andrew Pekler at our HQ. Additionally, it also tries to use this moment to slip the save-the-date for Oscillation Festival, our sonorous celebrations, into your agendas. To conclude, it highlights the oto-date sound walk by Akio Suzuki and presents a workshop on hardware hacking with Magno Caliman early December.

Post-residency presentation
20 October – 18h-19h – free – @ Q-O2
Lale Rodgarkia-Dara

In this presentation, Lale will introduce an essay, which is currently in process. It is called Seda and deals with the role of the sonic spectrum and our ecological interaction, as well as on her functional illustrations that become sound installations. Following the reading, Lale will play a short concert.

Eve Aboulkheir + Andrew Pekler

Presenting KRAAK’s latest release – and first CD in a while. Eve Aboulkheir’s Hypnagogic Walks gets unleashed into the world to the sound of live performances by this electroacoustic sound sorceress of the digiage, as well as some sentimental guitar escapism by none other than dexterous sound wiz Andrew Pekler.

Workshop hardware hacking
2 December – 11h-17h –  @ Q-O2
With Magno Caliman
Magno Caliman is a sound artist, educator and creative coder from Brazil. Both his artistic and academic research activities are heavily rooted in the embracing of programming languages as places for poetical speculation, as well as the construction, modification and manipulation of electronic circuits. He is a member of the Music, Thought and Technology research cluster at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent.
More info coming soon.

oto-date
Akio Suzuki

Oto-date is a project by the Japanese artist Akio Suzuki in which he invites the audience to stand still on specific spots in the urban space. These places are marked by a pictogram which shows a hybrid of human footprints and ears. The project seeks to get people listening to the sounds that surround them without the mediation of headphones. The Japanese term oto-date consists of the ideograms for “listen” and “point,” hence “listening point”, and is inspired by the Japanese tea ceremony “nodate”, which is held in open air. Since the audience is invited to listen to the sonic environment of the city, there are no soundtracks for this walk.

Herbert News 2317 – Talk by Nathalie Zonnenberg

Lezing Nathalie Zonnenberg
Conceptual Art: Past – Present – Future
Zondag 22.10.2023, 14u

Film screening
Aansluitend bij de lezing wordt het videowerk Green as well as blue as well as red (1976) van Lawrence Weiner (Collectie Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven) getoond.

Film still Lawrence Weiner, Green as well as blue as well as red (1976). Collection Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven

A Curatorial Perspective: Between Dematerialization and Documentation (Valiz 2019).

Hope is a discipline – Evenementen in oktober

won’t you celebrate with me?
26.10.2023
19:00 – 21:00
*Externe locatie: Metro54 (Westerdoksdijk 597)

“Slo Curating” – with Sadia Shirazi & Constantina Zavitsanos
27.10.2023
15:00 – 17:00

Slo curating omarmt alternatieve tijdperken, zoals ‘Colored People’s Time’, niet-lineaire tijd en ‘crip time’.” – Sadia Shirazi

Constantina Zavitsanos (New York, NY) werkt in beeldhouwkunst, performance, tekst en geluid.

Tropical Tap Water Presents: Jamal Liance

29.10.2023
16:00 – 18:00

Kom!

Hope is a discipline ontving aanvullende financiering van het Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds. We willen ook graag Vista Fonds, Thami Mnyele Foundation, Amsterdam, Netherland-America Foundation, TRANSIT, Arts Council Korea bedanken.

Beeld door Nikola Lamburov. Een lezing van Joopaka Subhadra’s boek “How Are You Veg?” tijdens Pickling for Posterity.

Clara Brörmann (°1982, Duisburg, DE) lives and works in Berlin. She had solo exhibitions at R16 (Berlin), Tick Tack (Antwerp), Shiavo Zoppelli (Milan) and Nicelle Beauchene Gallery (New York), among others.
Her paintings and drawings offer the viewer the chance to follow the process of creation of the works. During a longer process of construction and deconstruction, a layered painting emerges: she constructs and deletes, covers or removes paint. She sketches and rejects until she has created a unity of colour, shape and material. Vivid lines, shifted areas of colour and traces of the working process guide the eye through the artworks. The results are paintings and drawings with abstract, often geometric compositions that exude a multidimensional materiality and strong physical presence.

Joke Hansen (°1979, Bilzen, BE) lives in Bilzen and works in Hasselt. She had group exhibitions in Z33 (Hasselt), SMAK (Gent) and Julianus (Tongeren).
With each new painting or series, Joke Hansen sets ground rules for herself. For example: at least one oblique plane, at least one eye and no more than two corners. In recent years, she has made this game of strangely shaped canvases and cut-outs her own, and it constantly directs her towards new quests. The cut-outs and, in parallel, the oval-, circular- or elliptical- shaped elements on the canvas, imply an extra dimension, a portal to another world or a next level. For the first time, in collaboration with scenographer Joris Perdieus, she translates this ‘boogie’ into a special experience, which automatically turns the exhibition into a total installation.

Aktuelle Ausstellungen im Ludwig Forum Aachen

Katalin Ladik
Ooooooooo-pus
07.10.2023 – 10.03.2024
Performance: 19.11.2023

Switch. Pop, Points and Politics
Sammlungspräsentation
07.10. – 19.11.2023

Künstler*innen: Jo Baer, Nairy Baghramian, Judith Bartolani, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Saskia de Boer, Jonathan Borofsky, Peter Brüning, Erik Bulatov, Claude Caillol, María Magdalena Campos-Pons, Laura Grisi, Wang Guangyi, Duane Hanson, Jenny Holzer, Dorothy Iannone, Jörg Immendorff, Magdalena Jetelová, Jasper Johns, Ando Keskküla, Konrad Klapheck, Gabriel Kuri, Roy Lichtenstein, Lee Lozano, Attila Mata, Hilka Nordhausen, Claes Oldenburg, Lady Pink, Gerhard Richter, Karla Sachse, George Segal, Wolf Vostell, Franz Erhard Walther, Andy Warhol, Ai Weiwei, Yu Youhan

Press, Marketing, Communication
at the Ludwig Forum Aachen
Application Deadline: Oct 15, 2023

At the earliest possible date, the function of handling “press, marketing and communication” (m/w/d) in the Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst division of the Kulturbetrieb (the culture-related municipal undertaking) is to be filled. This is a full-time position, initially limited to a time period of 2 years. Permanent employment is envisaged in the future.

The Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst is a museum for international, contemporary art. As the headquarters of a global museum family, in addition to special exhibitions, it presents exhibits from the world-famous art collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig, with key works of the German and Western European postwar period, as well as significant collections of American art from the 1960s onwards. In addition, the museum houses one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary art from Cuba, contemporary art from China, and art from Soviet Russia, the former Soviet republics and from Central and Eastern Europe. Its transdisciplinary program combines solo and group exhibitions with research projects, conferences, film screenings, music and dance festivals and other educational activities to continuously expand and re-contextualize its collections in close dialogue with its diverse audience.

Please submit your application until October 15, 2023 using the Online Portal: https://karriere.aachen.de/stellenangebot/e-49-1-lufo-2023-002117/

Current Exhibitions at Ludwig Forum Aachen

Katalin Ladik
Ooooooooo-pus
Oct 7, 2023 – March 10, 2024
Performance: Nov 19, 2023

The Ludwig Forum Aachen is pleased to present Ooooooooo-pus, the first survey exhibition of Katalin Ladik (b. 1942 in Novi Sad, lives in Budapest). Her radical approach to poetry, sound, and performance established her as a key figure in the artistic avant-gardes of former Yugoslavia. Drawing on her career-spanning interest in language and corporeality, the exhibition provides for the first time a comprehensive overview of Ladik’s work from the late 1960s to the present. The scores of her visual and phonic poems set to music manifest themselves in the exhibition space as collages, textile works, photographs and objects and, together with selected sound compositions, open up a soundscape carried by the extraordinary range of the artist’s voice.

Curated by Fanny Hauser (Ludwig Forum Aachen) and Hendrik Folkerts (Moderna Museet, Stockholm). The exhibition is co-organized in cooperation with Haus der Kunst München and Moderna Museet, Stockholm.

The Cinélutte Collective is an association born of the May 1968 movement, created jointly by students and teachers at IDHEC-Institute des Hautes Études Cinématographiques. From 1973 to 1981, Cinélutte produced, shot, and distributed seven short and medium-length films including Jusqu’au bout and Margoline, both on immigrant struggles.

This period also saw the development of theater groups such as Al Halaka (Marseille/Aix) and Al Assifa (Paris), which were instrumental in furthering the struggle against racism and for migrant rights, alongside the Movement of Arab Workers.

Bouchra Khalili (1975, Casablanca, Morocco) has devoted ten years of research to these groups: this inquiry has led her to produce a set of projects (The Circle, installation, 2023; The Tempest Society, film in 2017 and publication in 2019; Audio Family Album, 2020) on the work and memory of these theatrical experiences. A French-Moroccan artist living and working between Berlin and Vienna, her work is presented in the context of A Convening of Civic Poets, an exhibition currently on view at KADIST Paris.

A Convening of Civic Poets is a project made in collaboration with Sharjah Art Foundation. It celebrates poetical gestures that stand up for social justice, transnational solidarity, and civil right struggles.

Installations, films, drawings, and sounds highlight the power of language as a political tool, while offering reflections on how to convey these experiences without reducing them.

ABA RESIDENTS

Elif Satanaya Özbay

Elif Satanaya Özbay is a Turkish-Circassian artist whose performance and research-based works revolve around diasporic nostalgia within the horror framework.

Özbay combines references to ancient Circassian myths, contemporary entertainment, and Turkish folklore to initiate autobiographical pieces. These pieces are then further interwoven with fictional elements through the use of mind maps. A certain striving for accessibility is an integral part of the work: most of her themes relate to the populations, that, after traumatic events—such as displacement and ethnic cleansing—live in the diaspora.

With a background in film and video, Özbay approaches her performances as narratives in their own right. Her process often begins with a core account, which she then adapts to the specific needs of the performance and the story that develops within it. In recent works, she has been further researching the uses of scenography and space, and how they contribute sculpturally and performatively to the depth of a project or a performance. Julia Nusser

Julia Nusser (b. 1991, DE) lives and works in Switzerland. She has presented solo and in her duo practice Nusser Glazova installations, video works, and performances in institutions and spaces such as Centre d’art contemporain, Geneva; Kunsthalle Zürich; Kunsthalle Bern; Longtang, Zürich; le commun, Geneva; Wallstreet, Fribourg; Palazzina, Basel; Borgenheim Rosenhoff, Basel; Künstlerhaus Bregenz. With Nusser Glazova she was nominated for Prix Mobiliare and realized a public artwork that was commissioned by Kanton Zürich. Julia also worked as a co-curator in the art space Wynx Club in Zürich.

Julia Nusser is interested in obsessions that can take the form of being a fan, or a part of a subculture in terms of fashion, styling, and lifestyle. In her videos, photos, performances, and writing, she is fictionalizing her life. She copies or imitates people and characters from pop culture she admires and adds her own personal story to them. With these self-experiments, she is trying to understand deeply rooted relations and structures that influence our thinking and decisions. Especially in gender performing roles of our society related to workplace, school, family, and relationships.

Tereza Glazova

Tereza Glazova, born in 1996 in Riga and now based in Zurich, does both solo work and collaborates with Julia Nusser in the duo Nusser Glazova. She employs the pseudonym Tereza Auslettland for her writings and engages in sound projects using aliases such as Mia Thermopolis and just a girl. She is co-founder of the art space Wynx Club and the event label Forever Unblocked.

In her ongoing video series Feelings Deluxe, Glazova strives to capture genuine performances, all the while recognizing the inherent challenge of conveying real emotion through the lens. Utilizing a cinéma vérité approach to filming and directing, each video sequence blends scripted and freestyled elements, taking inspiration from and named after the friends and acquaintances she depicts. Challenging conventional ideas of authenticity, she then subjects the filmed material to subtle corrosion by contemporary digital trends. Driven by her fascination with trend forecasting mechanisms, Glazova explores the intricate connections between contemporary identity-defining behaviors – such as fashion choices and musical preferences – and the prevailing cultural zeitgeist.

Glazova’s texts deal with the historical and cultural landscapes of post-Soviet Latvia, offering reflections on her formative years in the early 2000s. Much like in her latest publication Lucid Journal: Girl Life in EU, which is devoid of traditional academic elements and frequently embellished with naively decorative motifs, the text delves into issues of class, gender, and body ideals. It stands as an intimate yet potent exploration of actual girl life in the EU, reaching beyond individual narratives to confront broader structures and political dimensions.

intermission museum of art (ima) is thrilled to announce its latest exhibition, volume iii: work-in-progress, featured through 30 december 2023.

work-in-progress is the third installment of projects at ima and represents the culmination of committee work and collaborative projects from ima’s volume iii programming. this journey commenced with the formation of the committee for curricular thinking in february 2023. the committee’s guiding document served as the compass for the collaborative efforts that led to the creation of this exhibition. it embodies an ongoing exploration of fine art education and its evolution. this exhibition reflects the fruitful outcome of thought-provoking discussions and collaborative endeavors with invited artists and educators.

the exhibition provides a unique opportunity to engage with a diverse array of artistic perspectives and methodologies. work-in-progress extends an invitation to participate in the dialogue concerning the future of fine art education and offers an opportunity to explore the dynamic intersection of art, education and activism in our current cultural, political and existential moment.

about ima

intermission museum of art (ima) was founded in 2020 by rose van mierlo and john ros as a response to the growing fractures within our cultural, social, environmental, economic, and political systems during times of crisis. ima serves as a unique space for critical thinkers to engage with these moments of friction, transforming them into meaningful sites of production and fostering dialogues that culminate in a public archive.
