Join our opening programme!

We've been looking forward to it with you: NW's brand new cinema. This means new comfortable seats, but also a new, old-fashioned 35mm projector to show classics on analogue film.

We present our films in focus programmes. This 'focus' could be the current exhibition, a specific director, or a particular theme. Many of these 'focus films' will be framed with an introduction by the maker or an invited guest. This way, we not only show cinema in the broadest sense of the word, but also provide more depth.

We kick off during our opening weekend Club Ritual with our first focus Ritual Unions: four programmes composed in the theme of our opening exhibition Ritual in Transfigured Time by Counter Encounters. Alexis Blake is also coming to NW for a screening of Conditions of an ideal, followed by a Q&A. Not to be missed!

During the opening weekend Club Ritual will kick off our revamped film operation. Our first 'film focus' engages with the works on display and the premise of the exhibition Ritual in Transfigured Time. Four programmes in one day, curated by the international research and curatorial collective Counter-Encounters (Onyeka Igwe, Laura Huertas Millan and Rachael Rakes). Conditions of an ideal
Screening and Q&A with Alexis Blake

Among the bleached marble sculptures of the Parthenon friezes in the British Museum, Alexis Blake examines the historical white Eurocentric and gender imperialistic representation of the idealized woman’s body. Conditions of an Ideal (2016) is a choreography in which structured improvisations navigate between democratic group movements and individual postures, between moments of tension and balance.

Edith Dekyndt, Song to the Siren (still), 2022

The video “Song to the Siren” (2022) is on view at Palazzo Grassi
March 13 ⎼ 17, 2024
April 15 ⎼ 22, 2024

In the morning light of an autumn day in 2022, Edith Dekyndt filmed a young woman lying down near the Monument to the Partisan Woman, which sits in the waters of the Venice lagoon along the promenade leading to the Biennale Gardens. She holds a white cloth in her hand with which she wipes, cares for, cleans, repairs, caresses, and consoles the bronze statue depicting this woman from another time who is partially immersed in the lagoon, her hands tied, presumably close to her end, a fate suffered by so many partisan women during WWII, especially in Venice.

In this film presented in the Foyer of the Teatrino at Palazzo Grassi, Edith Dekyndt draws the viewer’s attention to our ability to preserve memories, with some measure of dread over their recurrence. The bronze statue, made in 1969 by the sculptor Augusto Murer, lies on a structure and a support created by Carlo Scarpa that sits in the water.

Song to the Siren forms part of a series of actions in which the same gesture is enacted at several public historical monuments to echo contemporary situations. The titles are always those of songs whose lyrics provide an open, timeless resonance. In this video, the title comes from Song to the Siren (1970) by Larry Beckett and Tim Buckley, which has been recorded by many artists, from This Mortal Coil to Robert Plant.

Vortrag von Yuri Leiderman
Do, 14.03. 2024, Space, 19:30 Uhr

Hanging in the surf. Odessa’s underground art from the 1980s
Lecture by Yuri Leiderman
Thu, 14.03.2024, Space, 7.30pm

With Volodymyr Budnikov, Mykola Filatov, Sergey Geta, Evgeni Gordiets, Eduard Gorokhovsky, Ilya Kabakov, Andriy Kotska, Yuri Leiderman and Andrey Silvestrov, Yuriy Lutskevych, Petro Markovych, Anatoliy Masharov, Daniel Mitlyanskiy, Vera Morozova, Halyna Neledva, Arkadiy Petrov, Larisa Rezun-Zvezdochetova, Viktor Ryzhykh, Oleksandr Tyshler, and Leonid Voytsekhov

The Ludwig Forum for International Art is home to around 1,800 paintings, sculptures, and works of the graphic arts from the former Soviet Union and central, eastern, and southeastern Europe which Irene and Peter Ludwig collected between 1979 and 1996. Fragments of a reality that once was marks the launch of a re-examination, re-positioning, and new exploration of sections of this collection which in the past were inventoried under the category “Art from the USSR” and about which there is little information down to the present day. Moreover, the respective works and artistic positions will be re-contextualized in relationship to current art and cultural discourses, an approach facilitating a critical inquiry into the prevailing Western perspective on “Eastern European art.” This first exhibition of the research project of the same name considers a series of art works which are connected in various ways with Ukraine. The exhibition undertakes a revision, examining the vague and imprecise categorizations, terminologies, and contextualizing narratives–whether they be geographical, political, or art historical–with the aim to do justice to the diversity and complexity of a region most recently racked by tension and violence.

Curated by Galina Dekova

The exhibition is part of the program “Research Traineeship Art Museums NRW” and is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Monowe

Monowe
regie Ludovica Carbotta, 64 min.

Collectief Eigendom

Webdocu still beeldmenu

Vrijdag 15 maart
14:00-18:30
Vertoningen van korte films voor Collectief Eigendom

Paneldiscussie over collectief eigendom met Natasha Hulst, Andrea Verdecchia en Marije Baalman

The Broken Pitcher

Peter Eramian Round Table The Broken Pitcher Photo Panayotis Mina

Breaking the Meme: Critical Meme Reader III launch

May 17, 2024, 17:00 – 19:00

Join us for the launch of Critical Meme Reader III: Breaking the Meme, edited by Chloë Arkenbout and Idil Galip, on May 17th at Spui25.

When you want to say something about memes, it is impossible to escape having to situate them. What usually happens is that meme makers and thinkers fall back on two definitions: Dawkins (1976), Shifman (2014). How can memes be defined beyond their work in a way that is better suited to our current time? Building on this work – yes of course – but in a way that leaves space for the meme to breathe. Honoring its transgressive everchanging nature, instead of limiting it into a static framework it never chose to be in in the first place. The goal of Critical Meme Reader III is to break its definition open with different visions, and to keep it open –  letting the meme choose for itself what it wants to stay, be and become.

HIGHLIGHTS

16:30_________________________FILM
MICHAEL SNOW: WAVELENGTH

This 4th edition kicks off with a screening of Michael Snow’s legendary film Wavelength (1967) in the Bonaparte theater room, the same location where it won the Grand Prix of the Fourth International EXPRMNTL Film Festival in 1967. Described as a metaphor for the “nervous system”, Wavelength is considered a masterful exploration of the nature of perception.
19:00_______________PERFORMANCE
LENIO KAKLEO – UNTITLED (FIGURES)

In the Magritte Room – another emblematic space of the Casino surrounded by hybrid characters from René Magritte’s frescoes – Paris-based Greek artist Lenio Kaklea presents a solo piece driven by a study of the sailor, crossing sources from painting, poetry, pop culture, and queer repertoires.

ONGOING_________PHOTO ARCHIVES
EXPRMNTL 5

In the hall, a series of photographs by Étienne Bernard of the 5th and final edition of the EXPRMNTL festival – organized in 1974 in the Knokke Casino – offers a glimpse into the history of experimental film and testify to the lively and contrasting atmosphere of this extraordinary event, where internationally renowned artists, local figures, filmmakers and film buffs came together.

20:45____________________THEATRE
MARGAUX SCHWARZ – CIVILITY

Later in the evening, former WIELS resident Margaux Schwarz hosts an imageless new play where the artist pursues her interest in the notion of backstage by foreseeing discreet or even invisible service and control devices. Spectators, comfortably seated in velvet chairs, will adopt the role of sound voyeurs, orienting themselves amidst this off-screen drama.

21:20______________DANCE & MUSIC
LANDER GYSELINCK & NAFAQ: EXTENDED FURTHER

To close the evening, Belgian drummer Lander Gyselinck joins the dance duo from Cairo Nafaq formed by Amina Abouelghar and Hanin Tarek. Together, they present an improvised adaptation of the dance piece Extending Further, conceived as a journey through the conflicting powers of connectedness and distance between the dancers’ moving bodies and the audience.

Posters & zines voor
Palestina
14.03.2024, 19:00

Bijvoorbeeld de magazine; “BDS, what it is, why it matters” van Leila Abdul-Razzaq, over de boycott beweging tegen Israël.

Join us next week for the opening weekend Club Ritual: A Social Event Choreographed in the Manner of a Dance

Opening Programme

22-24.3.2024

As spring begins, NW reopens with a communal gathering celebrating ritual as dance, transformation and dissent.

The entire weekend from 22 to 24 March is dedicated to old and new encounters, film focus programmes, workshops, listening moments, and kitchen stories.

Thanks to the partner programme, there’s much more to experience around Aalst as well. Admission is free, but please register for some of the listed activities.

22.3-26.5.2024

Ritual in Transfigured Time

Carlotta Bailly-Borg, Gaëlle Choisne, Maya Deren, Darius Dolatyari-Dolatdoust, Onyeka Igwe, (LA)HORDE, Ula Sickle and Bárbara Wagner & Benjamin de Burca

The new NW is inaugurated with the opening exhibition Ritual in Transfigured Time, named after the 1946 short film of the same name by Maya Deren (Kiev, 1917–New York, 1961). Deren, whose life was driven by a desire for freedom, was a guiding light for us in devising the exhibition and film programme, as well as the principles of our revitalised organisation: dialogue, collaboration, experiment and the breaking down of boundaries.

22.3-26.5.2024

Lucile Desamory, Untitledment, 2023, still

UNTITLEDMENT

Lucile Desamory

With the installation Untitledment, Lucile Desamory delves into the ongoing artistic question of emancipation and autonomy. The title alludes to the artist’s desire to create a terrain vague, a serene and fluid space delicately poised between emptiness and an autonomous zone.

During Club Ritual—A Social Event Choreographed in the Manner of a Dance Carola Caggiano & Lucile Desamory will perform hits by Dalida, Mina, old polish cabaret songs and Schubert Lieder. With or without microphones they wander through these well-known melodies which serve as vessels for emotions.

22.3-26.5.2024

Gathering of the Centre for Societal Renewal, 1974

INFO~ANGEL PRESENTs itself

The first in a series of presentations based on archival material chronicling Aalst’s progressive past and that of the wider Dender region.

In 1974, the town of Aalst’s Centrum voor Samenlevings Vernieuwing (‘Centre for Societal Renewal’) sprang to life. Back then, the centre, from which NW later emerged, hosted a wide range of organisations and voices with the goal of collectively thinking about society’s complexities and envisioning alternative future paths. At the heart of the centre was the Info~Angel group.

RITUAL UNIONS

Film Focus programme curated by Counter Encounters

Unfolding over the opening weekend of Ritual in Transfigured Time, research and curatorial collective Counter Encounters (Onyeka Igwe, Laura Huertas Millán, Rachael Rakes) present a set of programmes interacting in multiple modes with the works on view and the overall prompt for the exhibition. The four programmes include several film and video works from various eras, contexts, and in various styles. In addition, there will be a lecture-screening-discussion with Brazilian, Paris-based artist Ana Pi, whose performances and films are often deep engagements and dialogues with Deren’s work, but created in an entirely distinctive language, politics, and form.

22-24.3.2024

NW Kitchen, Photo Jonas Van Gent

During the renovation of NW, the emphasis was on creating a central space for cooking. The open kitchen is a shared space, linked to everything happening in the building and the community in and around NW. The open kitchen brings people together, each with their own story.

Roman Aurelio Karrer (he/him) is an in(ter)dependent graphic designer, researcher, and cultural worker. His interests encompass design and art education, collectivism, and critical theory, with a particular focus on publishing strategies. He engages in critical reflection on the ontology of (graphic) design, its integration into knowledge production, and the associated institutional critique. He seeks to question and transcend the boundaries of his discipline and to deepen/explore new roles and methods to actively weave theory into practice and vice versa.

The practice of ‘publishing’, and by extension the notion of ‘making public’, is a recurring theme in his research. Central to Roman’s explorations are concepts such as ‘designalism’ and ‘urgent publishing’, which emphasise the political potency of design and publishing. He is interested in thinking across scales – from the character to the page, to the object, to the shelf, to the library, the organisational structure, the editorial direction, and so on.

Being in Berlin will allow him to be closely connected to his local community, especially his friends and collaborators from the Floating University. It will enable him to further develop the Floating University Press, a vision that has existed since 2019 and has become a more concrete practice in the last year.

Originally from St.Gallen, Switzerland, Roman completed his Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication and Graphic Design at ECAL in Lausanne and the University of Arts and Design, Karlsruhe (2016 – 2019), and the research-based Master’s program ‘CCC – Critical Curatorial Cybermedia’ at HEAD in Geneva (2020-2023). Since 2018, Roman has been involved in the ‘Floating University Berlin’, where he is an associate member. He has also selectively taught at the EPFL School of Architecture in Lausanne (2020-2023).

Damien Juillard (b. 1996, CH) lives and works in Basel, Switzerland.

Reconfiguring and permeating reality in fleeting and non-linear ways, Juillard assembles material through various mediums such as photography, sculpture, drawing, print, painting, scent or text. His work reflect on how technologies filter sensations and challenges notions of distance, privacy, exposure, commodification and fragmentation. Melting digital and physical times and spaces, he explores the ephemeral and fragile nature of the human body, through its perceptions, feelings and desires.

Juillard graduated from HEAD, Geneva and completed his masters at HGK Institut Kunst, Basel in 2021. Often presented as installations, objects, images or sculptures, his work has been shown at Kunsthalle Basel; Kunstverein Freiburg; Galerie für Gegenwartskunst, Freiburg; Kiefer Hablitzel Göhner Art Prize, 2023; Haus der Elektronischen Künste, Basel; Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Zürich; Kunsthaus Baselland; Reaktor 19, Zürich; Amore, Basel; Kunsthalle Palazzo, Liestal; LiveInYourHead, Geneva; Centre d’Art Contemporain, Geneva.

Cooking

Big things cooking in the Q-O2 HQ lately (former residents and regulars will testify to the Q-O2 team’s love of talking recipes): preparations for the upcoming Oscillation Festival are in full swing (day breakdown and tickets per day will be available somewhere next week), and the first online tekhnē journal is also being vigorously crafted. But, there are other ongoing affairs in the meantime that may deserve your attention:

This Sunday, Lázara Rosell Albear is our guest for the 48th installment of our Second Sundays series, while later that day Suzan Peeters and Bao Sissoko play an improv set at VK Vaartkapoen, as part of the MUSIKAA/Klara Festival. Quite a while later, in May, the Showcase Emerging Sound presented together with STUK takes place: this year’s featured artists are Anouk Kellner, Pavel Tchikov, Lawrence McGuire and Kaat Vanhaverbeke. And, lastly, we’re happy to announce the arriving of the extended edition of Éliane Radigue – Intermediary Spaces / Espaces intermédiaires by Julia Eckhardt, which is again available at our space and via Les Presses du Réel

GALLERIES

1. EDJI Gallery
15 Rue du Page | Edelknaapstraat

Sanctuaries – Group Show
Delve into the sacred spaces of the soul at “Sanctuaries” : EDJI’s upcoming group show. Featuring works by Kayoon Anderson, Nicolas Coleman, Ileana Magoda, Grace Tobin, and Ping Zheng, this exhibition offers a glimpse into the diverse realms of sanctuary through art.

This exhibition unites artists in portraying their personal havens. Beyond showcasing domestic spaces, the artworks offer insights into the artists’ inner worlds, making “Sanctuaries” a promisingly introspective showcase.

2. BERNIER/ELIADES
46 Rue du Châtelain | Kasteleinsstraat

Tindara Spartà – “Coup de Chien”

Tindara Spartà’s upcoming exhibition promises a captivating journey into her artistic universe. Her work navigates a dynamic range – from miniature installations to life-sized sculptures, all infused with a distinctive domestic ambiance. She intricately sculpts dogs, incorporates flowers, and shapes living spaces, creating an anxiogenic, yet compelling atmosphere. Her unique creative process involves the fabrication and disassembly of objects, recently extending into tiling and mosaics. Discover Tindara’s masterful craftsmanship, transforming the ordinary into the extraordinary, as she invites you to witness time as a flat surface distorted and slowed down.

3. Michel Rein
51A Rue Washington | Washingtonstraat

Carte Blanche to Claude Lorent (AICA) / Marc Angeli “Peinture d’origine naturelle”

Marc Angeli’s exhibition showcases recent paintings, alabaster stones, and older works, offering a broad overview of his artistic approach rooted in nature. Inspired by the Italian Dolomites, Angeli’s discreet and minimalist works, including light pencil sketches and luminous alabaster stones, reflect a unique alchemical process. Nature’s influence is evident in materials like beeswax, red wine, and pigments, creating artworks that exude Baudelairean beauty and invite introspection. These iconic, spiritual pieces radiate an unspeakable beauty, prompting viewers to meditate on harmony, peace, and sensuality.

4. TEMPLON
13A Rue Veydt | Veydtstraat

Jan Van Imschoot – ‘La danse du mal insaisissable’
Jan Van Imschoot’s latest exhibition, born from rigorous exploration of museum masterpieces and archives, unfolds across 14 baroque canvases. The butterfly motif subtly navigates through opulent yet dark scenes, evoking themes of capital punishment and historical resonance. Under the discreet influence of Caravaggio, Van Imschoot offers fresh interpretations of classical myths alongside modern narratives, from Mata Hari to contemporary China and South Africa.

5. Galerie La Patinoire Royale Bach
15 Rue Veydt | Veydtstraat

In his gallery exhibition, the artist explores the invisible structures influencing our perception of an increasingly mediated reality. Operating at the intersection of visibility and invisibility, light and darkness, memory and forgetfulness, each of his works possesses the ambiguous charm of defying definition, surpassing attempts to confine them within narrow frameworks.

5. Galerie La Patinoire Royale Bach
15 Rue Veydt | Veydtstraat

Early Works – Lita Albuquerque
In its iconic nave, the Patinoire Royale Bach presents, for the first time in Europe, a selection of historic works by the internationally renowned multidisciplinary artist Lita Albuquerque, one of the few women artists associated with the Light and Space movement and Land Art.
Entitled Early Works, the exhibition invites visitors to discover a curated selection of sculptures, photographs and installations from ephemeral works produced in the 1970s and 1980s.

6. rodolphe janssen
35 Rue de Livourne | Livornostraat

Group Show – Giants

“Giants” at rodolphe janssen is a group exhibition featuring small-sized paintings by 16 Belgian and international artists.

Despite their often-overlooked museum status, these works hold a distinct place in the artist’s creative process, serving as preparatory pieces or experimental grounds.
The exhibition aims to celebrate the tactile sensitivity and personal dialogue these small formats offer, presenting a unique perspective on the artists’ body of work.

7. rodolphe janssen
32 Rue de Livourne | Livornostraat

Tom Poelmans – The Magic Market

rodolphe janssen with “the Magic Market” will feature 120 captivating drawings by Belgian artist Tom Poelmans. This collection’s richness lies in its diverse array of mediums, including pastels, stamps, pen, and a vibrant spectrum of colors. Poelmans’ artwork delves into compositions abundant in symbols and allegories, often paying homage to esteemed masters referenced in literature and catalog covers.

Each creation is a reflection of Poelmans’ inner journey, resulting in unpredictably crafted images that imbue the canvas with profound depth and meaning. Alongside these drawings, the exhibition also showcases a monumental oil painting by Poelmans, offering viewers an immersive experience into his artistic universe.

REMINDER – KONZERT INTERVENTION: Kalkül der Form

MAX EILBACHER / PHILLIP SOLLMANN

KALKÜL DER FORM

REMINDER – KONZERT INTERVENTION

Jules Reidy & Konrad Sprenger
Max Eilbacher & Jules Reidy

Max Eilbacher & Phillip Sollmann

[NGHE NEWSLETTER] Ce samedi 2 mars – Soutien au Soudan 16h-1h – AU 370 GRADOS

N  gh eeeeeeee

OUVERTURE HORS LES MURS 16H – 1H @ 370 GRADOS
370, chaussée de Ninove
flyer soutien soudan OK OK-01-01-01.jpg

K7 « SMILE YOU ARE IN SUDAN », en vente
