Kristof Van Heeschvelde + Younes Baba-ali

The duo exhibition “Mirror, Mirror, …” allows the oeuvres of contemporaries Younes Baba-ali and Kristof Van Heeschvelde to enter into a dialogue from a limited selection of recent works.

Baba-ali and Van Heeschvelde are two idiosyncratic artists who take a critical attitude towards society, the individuals that populate it and the institutions that organize it.

As observers, however, they do not put themselves on the sidelines, but deliberately step into its center, they regard themselves as part of the same society and therefore of the issues they raise. Baba-ali and Van Heeschvelde realize that they nourish themselves from the society they hold up a mirror to.

Opening 22.05.2021, between 4pm – 8pm

Visits upon reservation via Eventbrite

Closing 12.06.2021, between 4pm – 8pm

V2Vingt, 20 rue Vanderlindenstraat, 1030 Brussels

Kristof Van Heeschvelde

Kristof’s work focuses on the behavior of homo sapiens, as Yuval Noah Harari describes it in his book, and the world he created for himself. Through a collage technique, Kristof places various elements together that at first sight have nothing to do with each other and that cannot or do not want to enter into a relationship with each other. At the same time, these composite realities are like a razor-sharp observation of human being and acting. Kristof counteracts this critical view by allowing humor and a naive color palette to creep into his work.

Kristof works on large canvases that he hangs freely in the room, often not stretched. In this way the painting is detached from its medium and the dimensions are extended beyond the framework of the canvas. The painting does not stop at the edge of the canvas, but continues and forms a composition with all the other canvases and lines in the space.

The painting thus becomes an installation work in which the viewer is invited to wander around and discover the many layers in Van Heeschvelde’s work. These layers are built around a dominant composition that deliberately guides the viewer’s gaze along a multitude of details, layers of paint, language and art-historical references to the old masters. The whole is not the sum of the canvases, but of the canvases in a composition with the space.

Kristof Van Heeschvelde (° 1971), lives and works in Ghent.

Younes Baba-ali

Younes Baba-ali creates art that is unconventional, intelligent and critical, usually in public space or in places that are not obvious. He is a keen observer and asks pertinent questions to society, the institute, but also and especially to his audience. As a freethinker, he holds up a mirror to society and thus exposes its entrenched habits and dysfunctions. Baba-ali’s work often presents itself as readymade, but beneath this apparent simplicity hides a complex balancing act. As an artist-alchemist, he doses and combines technology, utensils, sound, video and photography with political, social and ecological issues. The resulting installations move the unsuspecting spectator to take a stand. Baba-ali does not shy away from controversy and is therefore often forced to subtly negotiate his art and its right to exist with its environment. It is always context-specific and only gets its real shape in dialogue with the audience. It is disruptive intervention art that confronts the viewer with himself and his environment in a sometimes ironic way. Baba-ali presents people with dilemmas and taboos and challenges them to (re) action. In this way he makes them his accomplices in a hidden artistic guerrilla that unites both the establishment and the common man in the street.

Younes Baba-ali (° 1986) born in Oujda (Ma), lives and works in Brussels (Be) & Casablanca (Ma).

Marionnettes

Richard Nonas (1936 — 2021)

It is with great sorrow that OV Project announces the passing of American artist, Richard Nonas, at the age of 85.

With a background in anthropology, Richard Nonas turned to sculpture in the
mid-60's, becoming one of the leading figures of the Post-Minimalist generation.

He developed a body of work engaging with space, place and time, trying to create juxtapositions as well as emotional and aesthetic interactions between his sculptures and their surroundings. Richard Nonas' deeply sensitive work speaks to both the intellect and the gut. The idea of the place, whether in the form of building or of objects, shifts our perception of the world and the world itself.

In the 70’s, Nonas took part in the Alternative spaces movement, which turned abandoned buildings in New York into exhibition spaces for contemporary art, in particular for conceptual and minimalist practices. His work was part of the inaugural exhibition of the 112 Greene Street in 1970.

He was not only a sculptor, but rather a sculptor of space, atmosphere and consciousness. His work is that of a constant, obsessive and permanent research arising out of our daily lives. His sculptures are an attempt in rebuilding the sense of place, a space as he has experienced during his journey with the North America’s Natives from the South West Plains to Alaska. With his particular use of raw materials (wood, stone, corten steel, etc.), Richard Nonas gave a new perception of an immediate and singular reality that imposes itself universally. His sculptures appear in a place that is situated not in their original locations, but somewhere between an ancestral tradition and contemporary time.

Richard Nonas has exhibited worldwide, creating wall pieces and floor works that range in scale and environment. Amongst his most recent solo exhibitions are: Richard Nonas: all; at once at Fergus McCaffrey, New York, 2019; COL at the Musée Gassendi, Digne-les-Bains, France, 2019 ;The Man in the Empty Space at MASS MoCA, Massachusetts, 2016; Richard Nonas: ridge (out, away, back) at the Art Institute in Chicago, 2016-17. Swerve (of shore) to bend (of bay,) Galerie Hubert Winter, 2020.

Richard Nonas was one of the instigators behind OV Project, and we were honoured to present his work for the opening show of the gallery in April 2017 and to exhibit his sculptures several times since then.

He is survived by his partner, Jan Meissner, and her son, Stefan Zeniuk, to whom we express our sincere condolences.

Online Viewing Room ⏤ Nathalie Du Pasquier

Nathalie Du Pasquier
Online Viewing Room

May 12 – June 7, 2021

Nathalie Du Pasquier, Aspetta la nave, 1987/2021, oil on canvas (141,6 x 129,5 cm)

Highlighting the many dualities that make up Nathalie Du Pasquier’s compound practice, this viewing room brings together distinct aspects of her work. On the one hand, a series of abstract drawings comes with a clear rhythm — these drawings are imbued with a musicality expressed through difference and repetition. They are the result of Du Pasquier’s daily practice, and the painterly equivalent of a pianist practicing scales. On the other hand, a singular painting made in 1987 and recently reworked by the artist superposes her earlier figurative work with the colorful geometry of her current pictorial language.
The expanded time instilled in this unique piece simultaneously points to the continuity and constant renewal that characterizes Nathalie Du Pasquier’s artistic research.

Jacqueline Mesmaeker Enkel Zicht Naar Zee Naar West

Dear reader,

While we remain fully engaged with our ongoing project, there are a number of new exciting projects happening at that we wanted to bring to your attention.

First of all, we are thrilled to present Brussels-based Korean/Dutch artist Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide)’s solo-exhibition Four Months, Four Million Light Years. The project is a collaboration with Kunstenfestivaldesarts and opens this Saturday 15 May, 11-19:00.

Four Months, Four Million Light Years stages a shamanic healing journey through space and time. This immersive film installation addresses the colonial narratives behind transnational and transracial adoption, through the historical relations between The Netherlands and Korea.

Textiles, paper text banners, and drawings surround this video projection, while shamanic poems, songs, and visions invoke the ancestors for support in an homage to those who have been cut off from their mothers, fathers, family, ancestors, land, culture, and spirits.

Please join us this Saturday, but don’t forget to make reservations in advance!

Additionally, our current episode of TV – on view until Friday 4 June – features Belgian artist Sarah Vanhee, whose work is currently shown at Kunstenfestivaldesarts.

The Making of Justice (2017) is a feature-length film in which Vanhee works on the script of an unmaterialised crime film with seven prisoners that are guilty of murder. To shape the story, they draw on their personal experiences, ideas, and desires.

A few weeks ago, we launched Seemingly Still, a wonderful new record of delightful noise by Laszlo Umbreit, Eitan Efrat & Sirah Foighel Brutmann. The performance that marked this event is available on the website of Kiosk Radio.

Seemingly Still is a two track LP released by audioMER. and , which builds upon Brutmann and Efrat’s film installation Miroir Séb Fragile ! (2017). It is produced by Messidor, distributed by N.E.W.S., and designed by D-E-A-L.

Get this record through rile*, books in the building, or via the artists’ bandcamp page!

In other news, we are hiring! There are two new vacancies posted on our website for business manager and head of communications. Please feel free to circulate these as widely as possible.

We’ll be back with more  news in two weeks, when we’ll be opening our next exhibition by Hamza Halloubi. In the meantime, we hope to see you soon in real life, or online for our weekly programme.

Take care,

Niels Van Tomme on behalf of

Cher.e lecte.u.r.ice d’,

Niels Van Tomme namens

Activating Captions week #6: Alex Dolores Salerno

EN FR NL

The sixth week of features a video by Alex Dolores Salerno: El Dios Acostado (2020), which is available from Tuesday 11 May until Monday 17 May.

El Dios Acostado begins in the town of Vilcabamba in southern Ecuador with a scene of a person resting in a field facing Mandango mountain.

A voice over describes the gentrification in the town as a result of European and U.S. researchers who arrived in the 1970s to study the longevity of the local population. A nearby town, San Pedro de la Bendita, is introduced to the viewer with a peaceful scene of a cemetery, full of love with memories of family.

The video incorporates access as part of its aesthetic and sets the video to a pace of rest. The narration is spoken twice in Spanish and English and each scene features audio and visual descriptions in both languages.

Image description: A person rests on the ground in an open field. We see him from behind tall grass. He faces away from us and towards green trees, bushes, and a mountain in the distance with several houses at its base. A power line runs across the field. The sky is bright with white clouds.

We zien hem vanachter hoog gras.

Antwerp Art Weekend 2021

Dear Brussels Gallery Weekend Friend’s,

We are delighted to present the 2021 program of our dear and loyal partner Antwerp Art. Antwerp Art Weekend 2021 will take place from 13 to 16 May this year, in the heart of the city of Antwerp.

© Eilandje Annick Boghemans

Every year, the Antwerp Art Weekend shines a bright light on contemporary art in Antwerp, commemorating the city’s active scene and further promoting contemporary art as a valuable and essential part of society. With last year’s cancellation of our 2020 edition, we now want to turn that light outward and have it serve as a beacon for what is possible within the limitations of a world engulfed by a pandemic.

With over 70 locations, both in- and outdoors, all of our participating venues will be eligible for visits and are applying the necessary restrictions to provide you a covid-proof, art-hopping experience, while also counting on your responsibility as visitors and passersby to uphold the measures in place. And if you’re feeling unwell, please, do not withdraw yourself from the comfort of your home.

Résidence Croisée – Porto
Artistes en Résidence, Clermont-Ferrand
01/05 > 31/05/21

Francisco Babo (1986, Porto)

14/05/2021 – 10/07/2021

Opening: Sunday 09.05.2021 / 16:00 – 20:00

Galerie DuflonRacz, Rivoli Building, ground floor 11, Waterloosesteenweg 690 Chaussée de Waterloo, 1180 Ukkel
Friday and Saturday / 14:00 – 18:30
or on appointment

[EN] With a roll of bubblewrap on his shoulder, Pierre-Philippe Hofmann leaves his house in Linkebeek to walk towards the DuflonRacz gallery in Ixelles. He stops by the artists who work or live along the way and invites them to join the walk, taking a small, carefully wrapped piece with them. At the same time, Frédéric Fourdinier organises a harvest of wild plants which will be cooked at the end.
The journey is not very long, but progress is made in fits and starts, and it is in a specific temporality that something is achieved. Little by little, this something has become a common project. Organically, linearly.
In the gallery, the works are stored in a custom-made shelf. Over the two months of the exhibition, they will be humbly arranged in small groupings in the space.

This project is an initiative of and organised by: Pierre-Philippe Hofmann, with participant and co-organiser: Frédéric Fourdinier, and participants: Mathias Domahidy, Various Artists. With the help and trust of Galerie DuflonRacz, Florin Filleul, Fabrice Schneider, nadine (4th WAB), Loes Jacobs, An Goovaerts

Commissaires
Christine Walentiny, Nadina Faljic

Lieu : Casino Luxembourg

L’homme gris

exposition collective

Commissaire
Benjamin Bianciotto

Lieu : Casino Luxembourg

Commissaire
Paul di Felice (Café-Crème a.s.b.l.)

Lieu : Casino Luxembourg

Dan Graham, Public Space / Two Audiences, 1976 – Collectie Herbert Foundation, Gent (foto door Anton Herbert, 1987, Archief Herbert Foundation)

Rodney Graham: I just want to ask you about one piece that really kind of, I don’t know, had a big influence on me. Public Space / Two Audiences, the ’76 piece.

(…)

Chrissie Iles: (To Rodney.) Why was this work such an influence on you?

RG: Oh, I just always thought it was so incredibly paradoxical, like how the effect was obtained, I could never quite get my head around it. Just the idea of turning a visual infinite regress into a kind of temporal infinite regress. It’s kind of fascinating and it’s super-paradoxical, it’s really a successful piece for that.

Dan Graham: Well – this is very important because all my work is a critique of Minimal art; it begins with Minimal art, but it’s about spectators observing themselves as they’re observed by other people, so about the perceivers themselves. And all my work became about temporality. I think Minimal art is static, but I got very influenced by Steve Reich, La Monte Young, and also yes, drugs – I did inhale…

RG: (laughs.)

DG: And also my work eventually became baroque, became a baroque critique. Because as you move, everything changes. The body changes, and it’s a time situation.

RG: You know, I just think that piece is a particularly successful integration of that time aspect.

(Fragment uit Interview with Dan Graham by Rodney Graham with Chrissie Iles and Gary Carrion-Murayari, New York, New York 7 May 2008 in Dan Graham: Beyond, MIT Press, 2009, p.96)

____

I realized the trap in that work which seemed to be very successful was that it was inside the white cube of a gallery. So I wondered what would happen if I took one wall away and made it into a window. Then immediately, you would have something that was both architecture and exhibition space. *

Dan Graham, tekening Clinic for a suburban site, 1979 / Collectie Herbert Foundation, Gent

Our Oscillations.eu network partner in Linz bb15 will host former Overtoon resident Lukas De Clerck for a spring residency. Lukas will continue his research on Airbag/14Holes and while doing so, offer shelter to long-abandoned childhood flutes.

Airbag/14Holes is a hybrid sound sculpture somewhere between a bagpipe, an organ, and a children's toy. To create sound, it uses abandoned recorder flutes that, following forced musical exploration during adolescence, were never played again.

Lukas De Clerck - Airbag/14Holes
Lukas De Clerck – Airbag/14Holes

Through a collecting campaign, a nomadic group of recorders are conscripted into the Linz Recorder Flute Asylum. Airbag/14Holes will provide air to this group of flutes. A heavy, continuous interaction between the flutes produces the emergent sound, like a dysfunctional organ finally finding its voice after a long period of silence. In his residency at bb15, Lukas De Clerck will use Airbag/14Holes as his instrument by manipulating the air flows, to be performed during the closing exhibition.

The project is part of the Oscillations: Exercises in Resilience project, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.

Overtoon is part of a diverse group of artists and art organizations that are looking for space in Brussels to organize affordable and qualitative artist studios. Together with more than 100 artists and 10 art organisations we are currently based in the former Actiris offices in the heart of Brussels.

But: we need to move out by the end of summer. Therefore, we and many others are currently on the lookout for several 1000m² of vacant property, be it floors or entire buildings, to manage art studios and art offices in Brussels. Over the past eight years, we have built up extensive experience to ensure proper maintenance and management of the spaces, safekeeping and contract handling. You can find all info here.
