Conceptual Art and Infinity

An art object is a risky statement. Whatever its form, this statement is a promise of infinity. Modern art has dazzled us with a constellation of such promises: ‘the ontological certainty of Malevich’s or Mondrian’s geometries, the power of Kupka’s and Rothko’s great and pure contrasts of sufficient colour, the legitimacy of Kandinsky’s connection of signs, the closed effervescence of Pollock’s gesture, Moore’s colossal maternities, Brancusi’s pure signs’. (Alain Badiou, Circonstances 2, Éditions Léo Scheer, 2004). At the postmodern turning point in the 1960s, however, conceptual art embarked on the structuralist trajectory of language, tautology and repetition, all potential obstacles to this promise of infinity. Despite this, the works of Roman Opalka, On Kawara, Joseph Kosuth, Sol Lewitt, Manfred Mohr, Robert Barry and many others escape finitude and manage to point to the absolute indicated by the moderns. How does conceptual art fulfil this promise? How do conceptual works of art, using the very materials of finitude, manage to point towards the infinite?
The lecture will be given in French and costs €6 and gives access to the Richard Nonas exhibition.

Un objet d’art est une affirmation risquée. Quelle que soit sa forme, cette affirmation est une promesse d’infini. 
L’art moderne nous a ébloui d’une constellation de telles promesses: « sûreté ontologique des géométries de Malevitch ou de Mondrian, puissance des grands et purs contrastes de la couleur suffisante de Kupka et Rothko, légitimité de la connexion des signes de Kandinsky, effervescence close du geste de Pollock, maternités colossales de Moore, signes purs de Brancusi. » ^[1]
Au tournant postmoderne des années soixante l’art conceptuel s’engage cependant dans la trajectoire structuraliste du langage, de la tautologie et de la répétition, autant d’obstacles potentiels à cette promesse d’infini. Malgré cela les œuvres de Roman Opalka, On Kawara, Joseph Kosuth, Sol Lewitt, Manfred Mohr, Robert Barry et bien d’autres échappent à la finitude et arrivent à pointer l’absolu indiqué par les modernes. 
Comment l’art conceptuel remplit-il cette promesse ? Comment les œuvres d’art conceptuelles, usant des matériaux mêmes de la finitude, arrivent-elles à pointer vers l’infini ? 
La conférence sera en français au prix de 6€ et donne accès à l’exposition Richard Nonas.

Wat zijn vorm ook is, dit statement is een belofte van oneindigheid. De moderne kunst heeft ons verblind met een constellatie van dergelijke beloften: “de ontologische zekerheid van de geometrieën van Malevich of Mondriaan, de kracht van de grote en zuivere kleurcontrasten van Kupka en Rothko, de legitimiteit van Kandinsky’s verbinding van tekens, de gesloten bruisendheid van Pollocks gebaar, Moore’s kolossale moederlijkheden, Brancusi’s zuivere tekens”. (Alain Badiou, Circonstances 2, Éditions Léo Scheer, 2004). Op het postmoderne keerpunt in de jaren 1960 begaf de conceptuele kunst zich echter op het structuralistische pad van taal, tautologie en herhaling, allemaal potentiële obstakels voor deze belofte van oneindigheid. Desondanks ontsnappen de werken van Roman Opalka, On Kawara, Joseph Kosuth, Sol Lewitt, Manfred Mohr, Robert Barry en vele anderen aan de eindigheid en slagen ze erin te wijzen op het absolute dat door de modernen wordt aangegeven. Hoe lost conceptuele kunst deze belofte in? Hoe slagen conceptuele kunstwerken erin om, gebruikmakend van het materiaal van de eindigheid, naar het oneindige te wijzen?”
De lezing wordt in het Frans gegeven en kost €6 en geeft toegang tot de Richard Nonas tentoonstelling.

Fondation CAB Brussels is pleased to present its 32nd artist-in-residence, Clemens Hollerer.
Clemens Hollerer (b. 1975 Bruck/Mur, Austria) engages in different methods of construction and transformation. Originally trained in photography, he predominantly experiments with sculpture, painting and site-specific installation. His works have roots in minimalism, conceptualism and architecture. He examines the notion of destruction in various forms, investigating guidance and limitation systems, revealing the heady fact of an existence that perpetually metamorphoses. Hollerer follows ordinary forms, found geometries and structures, denoting their life and functioning within a given existing pattern of life and reality.

Clemens Hollerer (né en 1975 à Bruck/Mur, Autriche) utilise différentes méthodes de construction et de transformation. Clemens Hollerer (Bruck/Mur, Oostenrijk, 1975) houdt zich bezig met verschillende methoden van constructie en transformatie. Oorspronkelijk opgeleid in fotografie, experimenteert hij voornamelijk met beeldhouwkunst, schilderkunst en installaties op locatie. Zijn werk heeft wortels in het minimalisme, het conceptualisme en de architectuur. Hij onderzoekt de notie van vernietiging in verschillende vormen, hij onderzoekt geleidings- en begrenzingssystemen en onthult het onstuimige feit van een bestaan dat voortdurend metamorfose ondergaat. Hollerer volgt gewone vormen, gevonden geometrieën en structuren, en duidt hun leven en functioneren aan binnen een gegeven bestaand patroon van leven en werkelijkheid.

FONDATION CAB Brussels is honoured to host an exhibition dedicated to the American artist Richard Nonas (1936-2021, New York). The exhibition offers a fascinating immersion into the singular world of Nonas, a sculptor whose work is distinguished by a profound exploration of space, matter and perception.
