In the context of the exhibition On The Lookout, Foundation CAB Brussels is pleased to present our 20^th artist-in-residence, Dimitri Mallet (b. 1983, Avignon, France) lives and works in Paris. He explores the modes of perception, in an attempt to reveal the almost perceptible and invisible.

In the manner of a translator who operates a conversion to a poetic dimension, he creates artworks resulting from the study of physical phenomena and interdisciplinary concepts. His work on language often refers to art history, with a peculiar penchant for paradoxes. Even if he starts from a cognitive approach and a protocol process, he also welcomes the unexpected and subjectivity. The romantic vision of the experience initiated by the artist characterizes his works. His paintings and installations, often activated by feelings, stimulate our inner perception. This required time for contemplation allows us to deepen our own visions.

From Paysages, a series painted or filmed, his canvas transcribes the luminous patches that can be observed with closed eyelids. These fleeting visions or phenomena of phosphene are unquenchable. Light signals enter the eyes before visual perception occurs in the brain, which translates these information into pure sensations: bursts of sensitive, moving and vibrating colors. This generic image, from a detail of another work (filmed and transformed into a photograph), shows a process that allows the artist to obtain such color combinations and a cinematic atmosphere. It is dynamic in its essence as the movement it represents. The difficulty of focusing, generated by the blur, captures and holds the visitors’ gaze, inviting them to a slow observation.

To close his residency, Dimitri Mallet will open the doors of his studio in Brussels on Saturday October 15th from 3pm to 6pm.

Dans le cadre de l’exposition On The Lookout, la Fondation CAB Brussels a le plaisir de présenter son 20ème artiste en résidence. Dimitri Mallet (né en 1983, Avignon, France) vit et travaille à Paris. Il explore les modes de perception, pour tenter de révéler le presque perceptible et l’invisible.

À la manière d’un traducteur qui opère une conversion vers une dimension poétique, il crée des œuvres issues de l’étude de phénomènes physiques et de concepts interdisciplinaires. Son travail sur le langage fait souvent référence à l’histoire de l’art, avec un penchant particulier pour les paradoxes. Même s’il part d’une approche cognitive et d’un processus protocolaire, il accueille aussi l’inattendu et la subjectivité. La vision romantique de l’expérience initiée par l’artiste caractérise ses œuvres. Ses peintures et installations, souvent activées par des sentiments, stimulent notre perception intérieure. Ce temps de contemplation nécessaire nous permet d’approfondir nos propres visions.

À partir de Paysages, une série peinte ou filmée, sa toile retranscrit les tâches lumineuses que l’on peut observer les paupières fermées. Ces visions fugaces ou phénomènes de phosphène sont inextinguibles. Les signaux lumineux entrent dans les yeux avant que la perception visuelle ne se produise dans le cerveau, qui traduit ces informations en sensations pures : des éclats de couleurs sensibles, mouvants et vibrants. Cette image générique, issue d’un détail d’une autre œuvre (filmée et transformée en photographie), montre un processus qui permet à l’artiste d’obtenir de telles combinaisons de couleurs et une atmosphère cinématographique. Elle est dynamique dans son essence comme le mouvement qu’elle représente. La difficulté de mise au point, générée par le flou, capte et retient le regard des visiteurs, les invitant à une lente observation.

Pour clôturer sa résidence, Dimitri Mallet ouvrira les portes de son atelier à Bruxelles le samedi 15 octobre de 15h à 18h.

In de context van de tentoonstelling On The Lookout, Fondation CAB Brussels is verheugd om onze 20de artist-in-residence, Dimitri Mallet (° 1983, Avignon, Frankrijk) woont en werkt in Parijs. Door verschillende beeldvormen te verkennen, probeert hij het haast onwaarneembare en het onzichtbare zichtbaar te maken.

 Zijn werken omvatten een poëtische dimensie en vloeien voort uit de fysische verschijnselen en interdisciplinaire concepten die hij bestudeert. Met een bijzondere fascinatie voor paradoxen, verwijst zijn werk rond taal vaak naar de kunstgeschiedenis. En hoewel zijn benadering een cognitieve en procedurele aanpak kent, verwelkomt hij evenzeer het subjectieve en onverwachte. De kunstenaar maakt werken die worden getypeerd door een romantische visie op de ervaring, door hemzelf geïnitieerd. Zijn schilderijen en installaties, vaak aangedreven door emoties, eisen een meer naar binnen gerichte reflectie. Ze nodigen uit tot een moment van bezinning om ons onze eigen visie toe te eigenen.

In Paysages, een reeks schilderijen en films, reproduceert zijn doek de lichtgevende vlekjes die we waarnemen met gesloten ogen. Deze vluchtige diffuse visioenen, of fosfeenverschijnselen, ontgaan ons constant. Het oog is de filter van de blik, waarvan de hersenen de waargenomen signalen omzetten in pure beleving: flarden gevoelige, bewegende en vibrerende kleuren. Gebruik makend van een bepaald detail uit een ander werk, gefilmd en tot foto verwerkt, illustreert dit generische beeld een procedé dat de kunstenaar toelaat dergelijke kleurencombinaties en een zekere filmische sfeer te bereiken. Het beeld is dynamisch in zijn essentie en in de beweging die het vertegenwoordigt. De moeilijkheid om te focussen, veroorzaakt door het wazige beeld, vangt en fixeert de blik van de bezoeker en nodigt hem of haar uit tot een vertraagde observatie.

Om zijn residentie af te sluiten, opent Dimitri Mallet op zaterdag 15 oktober zijn atelier in Brussel van 15 tot 18 uur.

ON THE LOOKOUT explores how variations of colour can stimulate human behaviour. This exhibition highlights the immersive and immaterial qualities of each artwork : while we investigate the space, we deepen our relationship with each of them. The dialogues and tensions created between the colourful installations and the architecture intensify our attention. With each moment being favorable to observe fleeting occurrences, an expanded time devoted to these encounters enhances our experiences. Thus, by discerning several states of the same work, we also sharpen our perceptive adjustments.

The exhibition unfolds in different sequences. Along with its zones of experience, we discover the conceptual nuances between the artists.

ON THE LOOKOUT explore comment les variations de couleurs peuvent stimuler le comportement humain. ON THE LOOKOUT verkent de stimulatie van menselijk gedrag door middel van verschillende kleurvariaties. De werken in deze tentoonstelling worden gekenmerkt door hun immersieve en immateriële karakter. Als we ons verplaatsen, gaan we een relatie met ze aan. De dialogen die tussen de kleurrijke installaties en de architectuur ontstaan, versterken onze aandacht. De tijd die aan deze ontmoetingen wordt besteed, draagt bij tot de kwaliteit van onze ervaringen, waarbij elk moment gunstig is om microgebeurtenissen waar te nemen. Dit ensemble brengt ons in staat om verschillende toestanden van hetzelfde werk in een situatie te onderscheiden en scherpt de finesse aan van onze perceptieve aanpassingen.

De tentoonstelling ontvouwt zich in verschillende sequenties. Terwijl de bezoeker door de ervaringszones wandelt, komen de nuances van conceptuele tonaliteiten tussen de kunstenaars nar boven.

À travers des activités ludiques, ils seront guidés pour développer leur sens de l’observation et leur créativité. Une visite interactive de l’exposition sera également proposée, suivi d’un goûter.

La Fondation CAB présente une exposition dans laquelle (le commissaire) Gregory Lang envisage l’espace de la fondation comme le support d’expérimentations nouvelles pour des artistes internationaux et de la scène bruxelloise.

ON THE LOOKOUT (À l’affût) explore la stimulation des comportements humains à travers différentes variations de la couleur. Les œuvres en présence se distinguent par un caractère à la fois immersif et immatériel. Au gré de nos déplacements, nous entrons en relation avec elles. Les dialogues et les tensions ainsi créés entre les installations colorées et l’architecture intensifient notre attention. Le temps consacré à ces rencontres contribue à la qualité de nos expériences vécues, chaque moment étant favorable pour observer des micro-événements. Cet ensemble met en jeu notre capacité à discerner plusieurs états d’une même œuvre en situation et aiguise la finesse de nos ajustements perceptifs.
