Verabschiedung Dr. Annette Lagler

Das Team des Ludwig Forums verabschiedet seine langjährige und geschätzte Kollegin Dr. Annette Lagler in den Ruhestand und bedankt sich bei ihr für ihr unermüdliches Engagement. Im Zuge ihrer 28-jährigen Tätigkeit als Stellvertretende Direktorin am Ludwig Forum Aachen war Dr. Lagler maßgeblich an der Organisation und wissenschaftlichen Aufbereitung zahlreicher Ausstellungs-, Katalog- und Sammlungsprojekte beteiligt. Zu den wichtigsten Projekten unter ihrer Verantwortung zählen die Ausstellungen Nie wieder störungsfrei (2011/2012), Nancy Graves (2013/2014) und Blumensprengung (2020). Ihre letzte, gemeinsam mit Eva Birkenstock kuratierte Ausstellung, ist dem Werk der afrokubanischen Künstlerin Belkis Ayón gewidmet. Bis zum 12. März 2023 kann sie noch im Ludwig Forum besucht werden.

1995 trat Annette Lagler ihre Stelle als stellvertretende Direktorin und Sammlungskuratorin am Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst in Aachen an. Sie arbeitete mit wechselnden Direktor*innen wie Professor Dr. Wolfgang Becker, Harald Kunde, Dr. Brigitte Franzen, Dr. Andreas Beitin und zuletzt mit Eva Birkenstock zusammen, kooperierte mit diversen städtischen Institutionen und Partner*innen, mit der Peter und Irene Ludwig Stiftung, dem Verein der Freunde des Ludwig Forums sowie mit vielen anderen Förderer*innen des Hauses von nah und fern. In den Jahren 2001, 2008 und 2015 übernahm Dr. Lagler zudem zusätzlich die Funktion der Interimsdirektorin.

Für ihre wissenschaftliche Arbeit am Ludwig Forum Aachen bildete die einzigartige, weltweit verknüpfte Sammlung von Peter und Irene Ludwig, das aufsehenerregende Engagement des Sammlerpaars sowie – in den ersten Jahren – gemeinsame Gespräche mit beiden, wesentliche Ausgangspunkte. Der einzigartige Blick auf die Welt, den die Sammlung bietet, das Zusammentreffen von globalem Denken und vorurteilsfreiem Blick hat sie dabei besonders fasziniert. So hat Frau Dr. Lagler zahlreiche Projekte aus genau diesem Kontext einer global vernetzen Ludwig-Museumsfamilie entwickelt und darüber hinaus die Anfangsphase des Ludwig Forums in der ehemaligen Schirmfabrik wesentlich geprägt.

“Das Ludwig Forum ist für mich der schönste Arbeitsplatz, den man sich vorstellen kann: ein einzigartiger Ort, geprägt von der unermüdlichen Sammlerleidenschaft von Peter und Irene Ludwig, die sich dogmatischen, den Zugang zu Bilderwelten versperrenden Vorurteilen, entgegenstellten, ein Haus, das richtungsweisende Querverbindungen zwischen den Kunstgattungen fördert, das aktuelle Bewegungen der Weltkunst registriert, vorstellt und so das Bild einer weltumfassenden, künstlerischen Kreativität zeichnet. Das Bereicherndste war für mich die Begegnung mit Menschen unterschiedlichster Art und Herkunft: die motivierende wie achtsame Zusammenarbeit im Team, mit Kollegen*innen in Aachen, der Ludwig Stiftung, der weltweit vernetzten Familie der Ludwig-Häuser, der Austausch mit Künstler*innen.“

Wir bedanken uns von ganzem Herzen bei Annette Lagler für die lange und gute Zusammenarbeit und freuen uns, dass sie dem Ludwig Forum auf die ein oder andere Weise verbunden bleiben wird.

Wir wünschen ihr alles erdenklich Gute für die kommenden Jahre und freuen uns schon jetzt auf ein Wiedersehen!

Farewell to Dr. Annette Lagler

The Ludwig Forum team bids farewell to our long-standing, esteemed colleague Dr. Annette Lagler on her retirement, thanking her for her tireless commitment. In the course of her 28 years as Deputy Director of the Ludwig Forum Aachen, Dr. Lagler was instrumental in the organization and scholarly preparation of numerous exhibitions, catalogues, and collection presentations. Among the most important projects under her responsibility are the exhibitions Nie wieder störungsfrei (2011/2012), Nancy Graves (2013/2014) and Blumensprengung (2020). Her last exhibition, curated together with Eva Birkenstock, is dedicated to the work of the Afro-Cuban artist Belkis Ayón, and will be on view at the Ludwig Forum until March 12, 2023.

After receiving her doctorate and pursuing a traineeship at the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, the trained art historian worked as Deputy Director and Collection Curator at the Ludwig Forum for International Art in Aachen from 1995 to the present. During this time, she worked with various directors, such as Professor Dr. Wolfgang Becker, Harald Kunde, Dr. Brigitte Franzen, Dr. Andreas Beitin, and most recently with Eva Birkenstock, cooperated with various municipal institutions and partners, with the Peter and Irene Ludwig Foundation, with the Association of Friends of the Ludwig Forum, as well as with many other supporters of the museum from near and far. In 2001, 2008 and 2015, Dr. Lagler also assumed the position of interim director.

Essential starting points for her work at the Ludwig Forum Aachen were the unique, globally linked collection of Peter and Irene Ludwig, the collector couple’s sensational commitment, and joint discussions with both of them in the early years. She was particularly fascinated by the unique view of the entire world offered by the collection, the convergence of global thinking and an impartial view. Dr. Lagler developed numerous projects from precisely this context of a globally networked family of Ludwig museums, and also had a significant influence on the initial phase of the Ludwig Forum in the former umbrella factory.

“For me, the Ludwig Forum is the best place to work you can imagine: a unique site, shaped by Peter and Irene Ludwig’s tireless passion for collecting, which was opposed to dogmatic prejudices blocking access to worlds of images, a museum that fosters pioneering interconnections among artistic genres, that registers and presents current movements in global art, thus painting a picture of worldwide artistic creativity. The most enriching component for me was encountering people of highly varied nature and origin: the motivating and respectful collaboration in the team, with colleagues in Aachen, the Ludwig Foundation, the globally interlinked family of the Ludwig museums, the exchange with artists.“

We express our deepest gratitude to Annette Lagler for her long-standing, close cooperation and are glad that she will remain connected to the Ludwig Forum in one way or another.

We wish her all the best for the coming years. We’re already looking forward to seeing her again!

The holidays are almost here, but so are many wonderful new things at INC: a conference on the 9th and 10th of March 2023, a new book by Geert Lovink, and an event about expanded video publishing on the 7th of February. In research publications, more often than not media production—be it audiovisual or any other form of artistic practice that isn’t writing—is still seen as somehow inferior; mere support material. A figure that accompanies the text, the main act, and that fails to be considered as a form of research itself. Producing, distributing and consuming media is not about illustrating previously existing research or knowledge, but about doing things: working with media is actively doing research. In this sense, we should try and facilitate both tools and means for practitioners of this practice-based research, currently not or at least underrepresented in the publishing industries. To put it concisely: what is the role of publishing within practice-based research?

With THE VOID (a new research project set up by INC), over the past year, there has been tons of research and experimentation with audio-visual production and distribution. To do so, THE VOID team decided to approach the topic by starting the production of their own content, in collaboration with artists. Now, after the first year of experimentation, we from The Void are trying to collect different ideas and questions that arose during this time of research. To properly set up a research agenda, we believe it’s crucial to engage in conversations with other artists, researchers, and experts from within the field.

In setting up this event, THE VOID aims to gather and discuss the role of expanded publishing and its possible trajectories. The program will consist of two parts. First, we begin with the presentation of the multimedia research done by artist collective timeis.capital, which is creating a repository for self-organized initiatives in the art world through means of both video and 3D footage. This presentation will be the starting point for a broader discussion on the role of publishing and archiving for practice-based research. How can publishing be expanded to non-text-based output as well? What does it mean to create a transparent workflow for audiovisual projects? How can artistic researchers share open-source material without diminishing their labor? We would like to discuss these and many other topics together with a group of experts from various fields such as (fine) art research, education, publishing, archiving, and (new) media industries.

This two-day conference will start with a day of panel talks on the 9th of March at Spui25 and a second day of workshops, expert sessions, and other (hybrid) experiments at Framer Framed on the 10th of March. Topics range from hybrid solutions to (virtual) togetherness; green tech, tactical media and the war in Ukraine; memes beyond the static image to employing (memetic) moving images in line with the work of INC’s Video Vortex network which has been focusing on the politics and aesthetics of online video since 2006. What sort of hybrid tools can help evade the current crises? Can the on and offline world, filled perhaps with low and/or green tech, help us navigate an environment in which data and information are used as a tool for power?

Save the date and consider yourself most welcome to come and attend panel talks, workshops and expert sessions around media activism, tactical intimacy, TikTok and the moving meme, hybrid publishing, living archives, and much more.

This INC conference is organized within the framework of the two-year research project Going Hybrid, a partnership sponsored by Raak/SIA with partners such as MU (Eindhoven), The Hmm (Amsterdam), Hackers & Designers (Amsterdam), Willem de Kooning Academy (Rotterdam), Framer Framed (Amsterdam), Varia (Rotterdam) and IMPAKT (Utrecht). The project researches with a hands-on approach the future of hybridity in the cultural field; specifically, the possibilities that lie within hybrid publishing and participatory live casting, as well as living archives.

La première partie de l’exposition DEMO et la librairie temporaire au Salon du Salon sont ouvertes au public jusqu’au jeudi 22.12 inclus.

Si toutefois tu es “en ville” entre le 23.12 et le 5.01 et souhaites visiter l’exposition durant les fêtes, le programme radiophonique suivant – et son énoncé – pourraient faire office de protocole.

Je te propose en ce cas de me contacter par retour de cet email et nous tacherons d’organiser ta visite en solo.

Un homme reçoit par la poste les clés d’une demeure sise dans une campagne reculée. Des œuvres d’art y sont installées, au milieu d’un décor bourgeois de villégiature muséifié. La voix du visiteur solitaire, qui n’est autre que celle de l’auteur, décrit ce qu’elle voit et entend. Les œuvres se mélangent aux objets, le décor se fond dans l’illusion. En une heure, on visualise plusieurs dizaines d’œuvres en tout genre.

L’espace du salon reflète son double. Y sont présentées une série d’instructions, des œuvres d’art qui – sous forme de protocoles – génèrent des situations dans l’espace domestique. Des gestes, des rituels externes troublent l’ordinaire, des objets temporaires et configurations éphémères cherchent à déranger temporairement ce qui est rangé. L’aller-retour entre les textes des protocoles et leur réalisation sert de prétexte pour une exposition et une édition imprimée, un livre qui n’est pas exactement un catalogue mais un recueil de formes et traces (écrits, objets, images) engendrées par l’événement.

Les hirondelles chassent les nuages. Les esprits de l’avenue montent et descendent en spirale. La danse des somnambules. Un atterrissage rêvé. Une pause. Les paupières de la routine sont lourdes. Les ombres ondulent. Le disque s’arrête. Le robinet se tait. Un air, des refrains, une ritournelle.

Suis les instructions de la photocopieuse pour des impressions en noir et blanc, ou en couleur.

Un agrandissement au format A3 si cette fonction est disponible.

Libre à toi de décider du nombre de copies que tu veux réaliser de chaque image, en préférer certaines à d’autres pour créer la composition. Les images n’ont pas de sens, et peuvent être superposées.

Plus il y en a mieux c’est.

Munis-toi de colle à papier peint, le mode et badigeonne le mur que tu as choisi du mélange à l’aide d’un pinceau.

Pose les photocopies sur la colle humide, et mouille-les encore avec le pinceau.

LA MAISON DES ARTS DE SCHAERBEEK, Chaussée de Haecht 147, 1030 Schaerbeek

Pour ses dix ans, ARTISTS PRINT, la foire indépendante du livre d’artiste et du multiple, organisée par Jeunesse et Arts Plastiques, aura lieu pour la première fois à la Maison des Arts de Schaerbeek. Devenue une référence pour le monde de la micro-édition à Bruxelles, ARTISTS PRINT accueillera du 3 au 5 février près de 40 exposants belges, français et européens.

ARTISTS PRINT a été créé en 2013 avec pour objectif de fédérer les éditeurs de livres d’artistes et leur apporter une plus grande visibilité auprès du grand public. Parmi les exposants, de nombreux artistes et éditeurs viendront présenter leurs éditions à faible tirage, parfois signées et numérotées. Citons entre autres : Nel Aerts, Claude Closky, Vaast Colson, Denicolai & Provoost, Dialogist Kantor, Lise Duclaux, Egon Van Ereweghe, Kurt Ryslavy, Bernard Villers, Elsa Werth… La singularité de cette foire réside dans son aspect désintéressé offrant aux exposants invités par JAP la possibilité de montrer gratuitement leurs éditions.

La création émergente est bien entendu aussi à l’honneur puisque les cinq écoles supérieures des arts de Bruxelles – l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles, la Cambre, l’ERG, LE75 et Luca School of art – seront présentes avec les réalisations des étudiants.

Stellenausschreibung: Sachbearbeitung “Museumsverwaltung und Registratur”

Die Stadt Aachen verfügt über eine ausdifferenzierte Museumslandschaft basierend auf bürgerschaftlichem Engagement. Bei dem im Jahr 1991 in der ehemaligen Schirmfabrik Brauer eröffneten Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst handelt es sich um das Stammhaus einer globalen Museumsfamilie, die auf Sammlungsbestände von Peter und Irene Ludwig basiert. Es zählt zu einem der wichtigsten Museen für zeitgenössischen Kunst in der Region mit vielfältigen Sammlungsschwerpunkten und regelmäßigen Sonderausstellungen unterschiedlichster Formate.

Zum nächstmöglichen Zeitpunkt ist im Geschäftsbereich Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst des Eigenbetriebes Kultur die Funktion der Sachbearbeitung „Museumsverwaltung und Registratur“ (m/w/d) in Vollzeit auf Dauer neu zu besetzen.

Der Bereich Verwaltung und Registratur übernimmt in selbständiger und eigenverantwortlicher Arbeit spartenübergreifend eine Fülle von Funktionen aus allen Sachbereichen eines Museums für zeitgenössische Kunst mit dem Ziel, die Abwicklung und Organisation von Ausstellungen, Leihverkehr etc. fachtechnisch, wirtschaftlich und terminlich zu koordinieren. Die vielfältigen Aufgaben sind häufig termingebunden und bedürfen einer engen Abstimmung der Verantwortlichen der anderen Bereiche und Projekte (Direktion, Kurator*innen, Restaurator*innen, Ausstellungstechnik, kaufmännisch Abteilung Kulturbetrieb).

Estelle Hoy reads from her latest book, Pisti, 80 Rue de Belleville (After 8 Books, Paris), and from a series of text-based artworks. Mauro Hertig contributes a new vocal piece, alongside two existing pieces: the string quartet Silly Empath, and a multichannel tape piece, Liquid Contra.

Estelle Hoy is a writer and academic based in Berlin. She completed her PhD in Contemporary Feminist Experimental Literature. Pisti, 80 Rue de Belleville, released in 2020 by After 8 Books, was her second novel.

Mauro Hertig is a Swiss composer with an output of ensemble, chamber, and site-specific works. He creates stage environments as game-like settings, using sounds of intimate speech, touch, and instructions.

Pisti, 80 Rue de Belleville by Estelle Hoy follows a wild nocturnal frolic among the anarchists and hipsters of Paris: Elke is a young academic with a troubled past that keeps spilling onto her present. Just as she is about to leave town for a writing retreat, she meets Pisti, a charismatic, hard-boiled, but luscious Hungarian left activist who runs an anarchist collective in Paris. Over one night in a Belleville apartment, old friends and new lovers discuss–and act–polyamory, politics, and the art of conversation.

Van Beek doet aan de Universiteit Utrecht onderzoek naar de verbeelding van de toekomst in klimaatmodellen. Ze werkt regelmatig samen met kunstenaars. Welke rol spelen kunstenaars in inzichtelijk maken van de klimaatcrisis? En kunnen we die rol wel van hen vragen?

Essay

Wanneer Linde Keja naar de poésie sonore van Henri Chopin (1922-2008) luistert, walgt ze af en toe. Maar Chopins elektronische verkenningen worden haar vertrouwd, want het zijn de geluiden van een lichaam, van mijn eigen lichaam of van een ander nabij menselijk of dierlijk lichaam. ‘Het raakt een verlangen, naar tast en warmte, adem op huid, geborgen zijn, slaap, seks.’ In dit essay beschrijft Keja hoe Chopins klankgedichten uiteindelijk haar blik, of gehoor, doen kantelen. ‘Ik vind zijn werk zo waardevol, omdat het me leert te luisteren naar mijn eigen lichaam zonder het meteen te hoeven begrijpen en zonder er bang voor te hoeven zijn.’

Na een leven als gedwongen nomade vestigde Babi Badalov (Lerik (Azerbeidzjan), 1959) zich elf jaar geleden in Parijs. Zijn omzwervingen en geleefde ervaring – de confrontatie met verschillende landen, culturen, talen en alfabetten – liggen aan de basis van zijn praktijk waarbinnen het maken van kunst en activisme samenvloeien. ‘Kunstenaars uit Azerbeidzjan, Oezbekistan of Turkmenistan zich nog steeds aan de rand van discussies over kolonialisme. Mensen geven niet om de regio.’ Deze maand presenteerden Elsbeth Dekker (kunsthistoricus en rechtswetenschapper) en Robbie Schweiger (slavist en kunsthistoricus, verbonden aan het Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam) hun boek Beginning in the Middle: Conversations on the Post-Soviet (Jap Sam Books, 2022). Een nooduitgang midden op straat in Berlijn, om te ontvluchten aan het dagelijks leven. Een groot bord met een filmscript over hardlopers, geplaatst bij een park waar nietsvermoedende sporters voorbij komen, die zo onderdeel worden van de scène. Of een gloednieuwe buitenwijk van Wenen, waar een tourgids die normaal gesproken met zijn paard en wagen toeristen rondrijdt door de historische centrum, nu van de toekomstige bewoners van de wijk over de omgeving te horen krijgt.

The iconic CG01 lamp – Christophe Gevers

Axis 71 lighting manufacturer, is re-editing with the Fondation CAB the iconic CG01 lamp, a 1968 model by Christophe Gevers. This unique model features the iconic green colour of the foundation, from the palette of Le Corbusier, produced in limited edition of 32.

The Gigaro lamp – Charles Zana

The GIRAR O lamp in natural terracotta and green cast enamel signed by the architect CHARLES ZANA and handmade in France.

Cutting boards – Muller Van Severen

What started as a sculptural ode to the material “polyethylene” resulted in a set of overlaying cutting boards by MULLER VAN SEVEREN that can be hung against the wall. Several colors are available.

Die Auktion wird in diesem Jahr sowohl vor Ort als auch digital stattfinden. Das genaue Prozedere zur Onlineauktion und Auktion wird auf der Homepage des NAK erklärt.

Am morgigen Samstag, den 17. Dezember 2022, werden vor Ort im Kunstverein nicht digital angebotene Arbeiten von Prof. Hanstein versteigert werden. Eine Anmeldung vor Ort ist ab 18 Uhr möglich; vorab nehmen wir gerne schriftliche Gebote entgegen, ebenso kann man sich vorab als Telefonbieter registrieren lassen. [EN] For four days and nights, Chloé Schuiten and Clément Thiry will occupy Place du Marché aux Porcs, facing the noisy and inert ‘monument to the Pigeon-Soldier’. While soaking up the noises, smells and music of the Christmas market, they will propose a new statue that is soft and mobile, like a large magic lantern, followed by a sound walk.

[NL] Voor vier dagen en nachten vestigen Chloé Schuiten en Clément Thiry zich op de Varkensmarkt, aan de overkant van het ‘monument aan de oorlogsduif’. Terwijl ze de geluiden, de geur en de muziek van de Winterpret kerstmarkt tot zich laten doordringen, creëren ze een nieuw standbeeld dat soepel en mobiel is, zoals een grote toverlantaarn, gekoppeld aan een wandeling.

[FR] Chloé Schuiten et Clément Thiry occuperont la Rue du Marché aux Porcs pendant quatre jours et quatre nuits, face à la statue bruyante et inerte ‘au Pigeon-Soldat’. Tout en s’imprégnant des sons, des odeurs et de la musique du marché, iels proposeront une nouvelle statue molle et mobile, comme une grande lanterne de Noël, suivie d’une marche sonore.

Friday 16 December, they organise a sound walk at 17:00 (meet up at Place du Marché aux Porcs).

Tree of renewal, welcome. We are ready to embrace winter, the cycle of seasons will soon be renewed, spring is ahead of us. In the ground we will bury you.”

[FR] “Marche – Enterrement d’un épicéa venu des Ardennes en Buratinas. Les récoltes sont terminées, laissons à la terre ce dont on ne veux plus afin qu’elle le transforme en autre chose. Arbre du renouveau, bienvenu. Nous sommes prêt à accueillir l’hiver, le cycle des saisons se renouvelle, le printemps est devant nous. Dans la terre nous allons t’enfoncer.”

[NL] “Wandeling – Begraving van een fijnspar die meekwam met Buratinas vanuit de Ardennen. De oogst is voorbij, laten we dat wat we niet meer willen terug over aan de aarde die ze kan transformeren. The present publication doubles as a travelogue of his practice, on and off his erstwhile Milan – Lausanne axis, calling at Brussels, Zurich, Paris, Mexico City and so on. The following pages further unfold Marcuccio’s faux formalism, which turns out to be less close to home to the virile machine dreams of Italian futurism, more aligned as his work and methods in fact are with a Duchampian legacy of transposition, creative direction, management and collaboration. The art is seemingly always shuttling between the centres of the action and the semi-peripheries that supply them, ready for dispatch or display, the opening and the closing. “All the world’s a stage” – or marketplace, or warehouse – as that Shakespeare quote goes.

Neue Publikation: Rosemary Mayer “Ways of Attaching”

Ways of Attaching ist ein umfassender Katalog über das Schaffen der New Yorker Künstlerin Rosemary Mayer (1943-2014). Er bietet einen Überblick über das Werk der Künstlerin, der von den frühen konzeptuellen Experimenten der späten 1960er Jahre bis zu den Textilskulpturen und Zeichnungen der frühen 1970er Jahre reicht, bevor er sich auf ihre Performances und temporären Monumente konzentriert, die zwischen 1977 und 1982 entstanden.

Ways of Attaching hebt Mayers formales Interesse am Drapieren, Knüpfen und Verknoten hervor und konzentriert sich auf den Prozess der Künstlerin, reale und imaginäre Netzwerke und Konstellationen zu konstruieren, in denen Freund*innen und historische Figuren als Ausdruck von Affinität und Verbundenheit auftreten. Darüber hinaus enthält der Katalog Faksimile-Reproduktionen von Mayers Schriften sowie neue Essays, die sich mit ihrem Werk und den Einflüssen der Astronomie, des Feminismus, der New Yorker Kunstszene der 1960er und 70er Jahre, der Poesie, der Religion und der Renaissance-Malerei befassen.

Die Konzertreihe Beat the System! Festival ist Teil der gleichnamigen, von Myriam Kroll kuratierten Ausstellung, die vom 09.10.2021 bis 30.01.2022 im Ludwig Forum Aachen zu sehen war. Die in der Ausstellung präsentierten Künstler*innen, Musiker*innen und Kollektiven – wie u.a. Die Tödliche Doris, Schwabinggrad Ballett, Goldene Zitronen, Pussy Riot, Christoph Schlingensief oder Chicks on Speed – teilten ein Interesse, an der Infragestellung vorherrschender gesellschaftlicher Werte und Normen. Im Vordergrund ihrer Arbeiten und performativen Aktionen standen Überschreitungen, Provokation und das Arbeiten an der Grenze von Performance, Bildender Kunst, Aktionismus und Musik. Die ursprünglich begleitend zur Ausstellung geplante Konzertreihe sollte genau hier anschließen, musste aber aufgrund der zur Ausstellungslaufzeit noch gültigen Coronaschutzmaßnahmen verschoben werden. Wir freuen uns umso mehr, dass die Veranstaltungen nun im Dezember 2022 als Zusammenarbeit von Musikbunker Aachen und Ludwig Forum Aachen stattfinden können.

New Publication: Rosemary Mayer “Ways of Attaching”

A comprehensive catalog on the work of New York artist Rosemary Mayer (1943–2014), Ways of Attaching provides an overview of the artist’s work, moving from early conceptual experiments of the late 1960s through to textile sculptures and drawings made in the early 1970s, before focusing on propositional and durational performances and temporary monuments made from 1977 to 1982.

Highlighting Mayer’s formal interest in draping, knotting and tethering, Ways of Attaching focuses on the artist’s process of constructing real and imagined networks and constellations, in which friends and historical figures feature in expressions of affinity and attachment. It additionally features facsimile reproductions of Mayer’s writings and newly commissioned essays reflecting on her work and the influences of astronomy, feminism, the art scene in New York in the 1960s and ’70s, poetry, religion and Renaissance painting.
