WINTER EDITIE

2024 going on 2025. Tijd om terug te blikken, alles op een rijtje te zetten, en te bepalen wat we wel en niet willen vasthouden. Tijd ook om het naderende jaar voor te bereiden en, met de nodige ruimte en zorg, nieuwe dingen in stelling te zetten. Beeld: de reuzevlag ‘Huriya, Huriya, Huriya, Huriya’ van Hussein Shikha is een oproep om zich (ook in de komende periode) te blijven engageren voor vrijheid in Gaza, Palestina en alle gebieden waar de meest basale vrijheid om te bestaan beknot wordt. ACTIVITEITEN

12.12: Triple Helix Opening

We naderen het einde van ons herfstseizoen in Off the Grid. Deze donderdag tonen onze residenten waarmee zij bezig zijn (geweest): we openen de nieuwe presentatie ‘How to Build a House (Windows and Doors)’ van onze collective-in-residence ( ) in the Mountain. Artist-in-residence Ívar Glói Gunnarsson Breiðfjörð opent de deuren van zijn studio voor een blik op de eerste resultaten. Voormalig Vaartstraat-resident Siemen van Gaubergen geeft tot slot een inkijk in zijn werkproces met de performance lecture ‘Glaciers are Anachronistic’.

16.12: Talk & Studio visits Nadia Bijl

Op 16 december ont­vangt Cas-co cura­tor Nadia Bijl voor een lunchle­zing en ate­lier­be­zoe­ken. Tijdens de lezing om 12 uur zal ze die­per ingaan op haar prak­tijk en de werking van Lichtekooi, de tentoonstellingsruimte die ze samen met Pepa De Maesschalk runt. Vervolgens kun je aan­schui­ven voor een goed gesprek en een demo­cra­tisch geprijs­de lunch.

22.01: Seasonal Opening

Save the date! Op 22 januari vieren we het nieuwe jaar en het nieuwe seizoen met de opening van de presentatie ‘fluff’ van artist-in-residence Ívar Glói, de finissage van ‘How to Build a House (Windows and Doors)’ by/door ( ) in the Mountain en de performatieve soft launch van de collectieve residentie door Francesca Hawker, Anastasia Hadjipapa-McCammon & Lucian Moriyama. Diezelfde avond wordt het nieuwe Leuvense cultuurnetwerk CNoL – met een introductie door Georgy Chtchevaev en gepaste spijzen – ingewijd.

Vacatures

Cas-co en maakleerplek werven aan. Wij vatten de zoektocht aan naar een opvolger voor onze algemeen coördinator Mirthe Demaerel; iemand die de werking – samen met het team, kunstenaars, partners en bestuur – verder versterkt en in boeiende nieuwe banen leidt. maakleerplek zoekt dan weer twee medewerkers om LLES, het nieuwe Leuvense Leerecosysteem, samen met netwerkcoördinator Lisa Vanhaeren te ondersteunen. Solliciteren voor de drie vacatures kan tot en met zondag 5 januari 2025.

Terugblik/bloemlezing

De voorbije weken brachten beweging op verschillende fronten. Een terugblik/bloemlezing:

Na een lange aanloop, zetten we in november grote stappen op weg naar een nieuw, open grafisch lab op de site van maakleerplek. Met het lab willen we iedereen – van kunstenaar naar school over start-up tot buurtbewoner – toegang geven tot de infrastructuur en expertise die nodig is om te (blijven) leren, experimenteren en co-creëren op vlak van print en fotografie. Met grote dank aan de inzet van verschillende kunstenaars uit onze community, de ondersteuning van de Nationale Loterij en het Leuvens Leerecosysteem (WSE Europa) en het partnerschap met maakleerplek.

Tussen 6 en 10 november ontvingen Level Five (Brussel) en Cas-co (Leuven) een internationale delegatie bezoekers tijdens de vierde editie van het UFO Visitor Program. De groep bezocht verschillende initiatieven, plekken en ateliers met een bijzondere focus op collectief werken. Op 7 november passeerden ze bij Cas-co voor studio visits bij meer dan 12 kunstenaars, een stop in het kunstenaarsrestaurant en screenings van verschillende films.

Op 28 novem­ber orga­ni­se­erden Werktank, Cas-co en Le Fresnoy dan weer ​‘Studio nati­o­nal des arts con­tem­po­rains’, een ont­moe­tings­mo­ment voor kun­ste­naars en pro­fes­si­o­nals uit Vlaanderen en Frankrijk met een focus op het snij­vlak tus­sen nieu­we media, film, beel­den­de kunst, tech­no­lo­gie en weten­schap. Deze dag liep paral­lel aan Le Fresnoy’s jaar­lijk­se ten­toon­stel­ling Panorama 26. Twaalf kun­ste­naars uit Vlaanderen – waaronder Siemen Van Gaubergen, Lupe Arens, Lucy Andrews, Lucian Moriyama & DE HOOP – pre­sen­te­erden instal­la­ties, per­for­man­ces en audio­vi­su­eel werk aan Franse pro­fes­si­o­nals.

Open Calls

De komende weken gaat Cas-co op zoek naar gebruikers, residenten & community members die hun start willen maken in 2025.

Voor het kunstenaarsrestaurant Off the Plate zijn we op zoek naar nieuwe invullingen – van éénmalige experimenten, tijdelijke pop-ups tot een recurrente bezetting van één tot enkele malen per week – voor het komende voorjaar. Ben je als kunstenaar actief op de snijlijn met eten en tafelen? Of wil je ondernemen in de horeca, in een unieke context waar kunstenaars, cultuurwerkers, vrijwilligers en liefhebbers elkaar op dagelijkse ontmoeten? Laat het ons weten tegen 5 januari 2025.

Kunstenaar en op zoek naar een ruimte, omkadering en programma in Leuven? In de loop van april en mei 2025 komen er vier ateliers vrij in de Vaartstraat en gaat Cas-co op zoek naar nieuwe ‘permanente’ residenten. Cas-co faciliteert niet alleen kwalitatieve en betaal­ba­re ate­liers, maar staat ook voor een dynamische en geëngageerde community, een rijk publiek programma en ontwikkelings- en pre­sen­ta­tie­kan­sen op maat. Geïnteresseerd? Stuur je dos­sier in tot en met zon­dag 2 februari 2025.

Een laatste oproep richt zich aan iedereen die wil bijdragen aan het verhaal van ons nieuwe grafisch lab (zie boven). Ben je nieuwsgierig naar de plannen of heb je vragen? RESIDENTEN

Ateliers

In november startte drie nieuwe atelier-residenten: Lise Van den Broucke, Lupe Arens en Margot Van den Berghe. Een grote welkom.


Lise Van den Broucke maakt kunstenaarsboeken en installaties die volgen uit een rhizomatisch werk- en observatieproces waarbij afbeeldingen voortdurend opnieuw worden gelezen; een studie gericht op het proberen te begrijpen wat afbeeldingen kunnen communiceren, de relatie tussen visuele informatie en onze subjectieve ervaringen, en het nastreven van een staat vóór expliciet begrip. Ze speelde ook een cruciale rol bij het bedenken van een nieuw open grafisch lab in Cas-co (zie boven).


Lupe Arens maakt kortfilms en fotografische projecten die vrouwelijkheid en de esthetiek van kitsch centraal stellen. Met een speelse maar kritische benadering onderzoekt ze hoe deze elementen kunnen worden gebruikt om verhalen en emoties over te brengen, waarbij visuele aantrekkingskracht wordt gecombineerd met inhoudelijke diepgang. Naast haar praktijk als kunstenaar, organiseert Lupe kunstevenementen waarbij ze haar praktische, artistieke en curatoriële vaardigheden combineert. Al doende bouwt ze aan een community op het kruispunt van haar interessevelden.

Als textielkunstenaar reflecteert Margot Van den Berghe op thema’s als tijd, vergankelijkheid en duurzaamheid. Haar praktijk richt zich op materialen met een geschiedenis, textiel verzameld uit donaties, gevonden voorwerpen en industriële restproducten, waarbij elk stuk zijn eigen verhaal meedraagt. Langzaam en doelbewust manipuleert ze texturen en kleuren om diepte en zintuiglijke rijkdom toe te voegen. Al doende transformeert de kunstenaar deze ‘over het hoofd geziene materialen’ tot fijnmazige en complexe oppervlaktes, die uitnodigen tot verkenning en een hernieuwde waardering van het handgemaakte.

M-Residentie

Ook in de M-Residentie startte vorige maand een nieuwe resident: Brahim Tall richt zich in zijn kunstpraktijk op verschillende vormen van lichaams- en identiteitsonderzoek. In film, fotografie, performance en installatie verkent hij thema’s zoals de representatie van het zwarte lichaam, de rol van beelden in (de)kolonisatie en de wisselwerking tussen individuele en collectieve identiteit. Brahims residentieperiode vindt plaats van november 2024 tot april 2025.

fluent is pleased to present Ta’ziyeh, a two–day public programme that integrates film and sonic works from the KADIST collection, together with pieces by guest artists invited by fluent.

Drawing on the work of Iranian playwright Reza Abdoh (currently on view at fluent), the notion of Ta’ziyeh –a theatrical genre considered a fundamental pillar in Iranian theatre– provides a space to imagine potential forms of catharsis in the intricate tapestry of contemporary global violence and geopolitics. As a cathartic device, Ta’ziyeh addresses the reality and cruelty of our lives while reclaiming presence and desire. Echoing its dramatic nature, the artists in the programme respond to the current state of extreme political fatigue, unfolding forms of affection through ritualistic, somatic and atmospheric means.

Clara Brörmann (°1982, Duisburg, DE) lives and works in Berlin (DE). Clara Brörmann’s work offers the viewer the chance to follow the process of creation of the paintings. She plays with the viewer’s natural thirst for knowledge and provides intellectual and practical insight into the visual creation. During a longer process of construction and deconstruction, a layered painting emerges: she constructs and deletes, covers or removes paint. She sketches and rejects until she has created a unity of colour, shape and material. Vivid lines, shifted areas of colour and traces of the working process guide the eye through the artworks. Paint offers several possibilities and is used accordingly: as impasto oil paint, as a structuring mass, as a thin glaze and as volatile pigment. The result are paintings with abstract, often geometric compositions that exude a multidimensional materiality and strong physical presence.
Clara Brörmann had solo exhibitions at RL16 (Berlin), Tick Tack (Antwerp), Schiavo Zoppelli Gallery (Milan) and Nicelle Beauchene Gallery (New York), among others. She participated in group exhibitions at Triangle (Knokke), migrant bird space (Berlin) and contemporary fine arts (Berlin), among others.
 

Isabel Fredeus (°1991, Kapellen) lives and works in Antwerp. Her artistic work includes installations, sculptures, video and performances. Fredeus is mainly interested in materials that are elastic, manipulative and flexible. Her works age, revive, decline and transform in time, while presenting a specific biological or chemical process. Within her artistic practice she tries to follow these processes, investigate the origin of their attraction and search for alternative meanings. For the past two years, she has been researching the sculptural qualities of mycelium in collaboration with microbiologist Elise Elsacker. Mycelium is the thread network of fungi.
Fredeus obtained a Master in Fine Arts and a Master of Research in Art & Design at St Lucas School of Arts in Antwerp. Her work was shown in the biennale Enghien 2024 (BE), at Sainte Anne Gallery, Paris (FR), Intershop, Leipzig (DE), Gr_Und, Berlin (DE), Art & Eco museum Felix de Boeck, Brussels (BE), Extra City Kunsthal (BE), Middelheim Museum (BE), M KHA (BE). She won the Lucas award 2015, awarded by Sint Lucas University College, Antwerp (BE). She won the Middelheim Museum Young Artist Prize and the awarded by the Middelheim Promotors and the prize of the public, Antwerp (BE).

Graag nodigen wij je uit voor de nieuwjaarsborrel van CiM (Cultuur in Maastricht) op donderdag 9 januari 2025, van 17:00 tot 19:00 uur in de Muziekgieterij.

Deze borrel is hét moment voor alle culturele instellingen, organisaties en professionals in Maastricht om samen te komen, ideeën te delen en plannen te smeden voor het culturele jaar dat voor ons ligt. We zouden het ontzettend waarderen als je erbij kunt zijn om samen te proosten op een inspirerend 2025.

Rooms Performance Festival

We verwelkomen je graag in 2025. Het jaar start met het Rooms Performance Festival op, met fris theater, schurende dans, een culinaire performance, kinetisch textiel, intiem activisme en nog veel meer. Dagkaarten zijn verkrijgbaar via marres.org.
Vultures & Fireflies

Momenteel werkt de Mexicaanse kunstenaar Alejandro Galván aan de huisvullende tentoonstelling Vultures & Fireflies. Kom naar de artist talk op 13 december! Voor een sneak preview in het artistieke proces is Marres vanaf februari elke zaterdag al open.
Feestelijke opening: 15 maart, 17:00u.
Marres 25 jaar

Marres viert haar 25-jarig jubileum! Op de 25e van elke maand vindt er een speciaal evenement plaats. Zet dinsdag 25 februari alvast in je agenda, dan lanceren we een nieuw Marres bier, als ode aan de brouwersfamilie die het huis drie generaties lang bewoonde.

Veranstaltungen im Dezember

Wir freuen uns, Sie zum Jahresende zu zwei besonderen Veranstaltungen in das Ludwig Forum einzuladen: Am Dienstag, den 10.12.2024 um 18 Uhr wird Kunsttheoretiker Bazon Brock einen Vortrag zum Thema Nachhaltigkeit in Zusammenhang mit kuratorischen Praktiken halten, der in Kooperation mit der RWTH Aachen stattfindet. Am Sonntag, den 15.12.2024 stellt Garth Erasmus gemeinsam mit den Musiker*innen Carina Khorkhordina, Ruth May, Peter Thiessen und Stefan Schneider sein im Frühjahr erschienenes Album Threnody for the KhoiSan vor. Das Konzert beginnt um 17 Uhr.

Darüber hinaus möchten wir Sie noch darauf hinweisen, dass der für Donnerstag, den 12.12.2024 geplante Künstlerinnen-Vortrag von Ayo Akingbade sowie die Direktorinnen-Führung mit Eva Birkenstock auf Donnerstag, den 23.01.2025 verschoben wurden. Selbstverständlich werden wir im neuen Jahr noch einmal daran erinnern! Wir freuen uns aber, am 12.12.2024 um 18 Uhr noch einmal eine Führung mit Kurator Holger Otten durch die aktuelle Sammlungspräsentation Auf dem Vulkan anbieten zu können.

Der Vortrag von Bazon Brock findet im Rahmen des diesjährigen Lehrangebots des Lehr- und Forschungsgebiets Architekturtheorie der RWTH Aachen statt, welches sich mit kuratorischen Praktiken in Hinblick auf Nachhaltigkeit auseinandersetzt. Unter dem Titel Zeigekunst: KuratorInnen als Zauberlehrlinge. Wie man hinsieht durch Wegsehen, wie man beginnt aufs Ende hin, wie man auf das zeigt, was nicht gezeigt wird, stellt Bazon Brock die Ergebnisse seines langjährigen Nachdenkens über die Thematik vor. Zum Vortrag sind nicht nur Studierende, sondern alle Interessierten eingeladen. Eintritt frei.

Bazon Brock ist emeritierter Professor am Lehrstuhl für Ästhetik und Kulturvermittlung an der Bergischen Universität Wuppertal. Weitere Professuren an der Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (1965–1976) und der Universität für angewandte Kunst, Wien (1977–1980). 1992 erhielt er die Ehrendoktorwürde der Eidgenössisch Technischen Hochschule, Zürich und 2012 die Ehrendoktorwürde der Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe. 2014 bekam er die Honorarprofessur für Prophetie an der HBKsaar, Saarbrücken und 2016 wurde ihm der Von der Heydt-Preis der Stadt Wuppertal verliehen. 2017 erhielt er das Österreichische Ehrenkreuz für Wissenschaft und Kunst 1. Klasse. Er entwickelte die Methode des »Action Teaching«, in dem jeder Satz zur Bühne wird. Von 1968 bis 1992 führte er in Kassel die von ihm begründeten documenta-Besucherschulen. Von 2010 bis 2013 leitete er das Studienangebot „Der professionalisierte Bürger“ an der HfG Karlsruhe. Seit 2011 betreibt er die Denkerei in Berlin als „Institut für theoretische Kunst, Universalpoesie und Prognostik“, und dem Schwerpunkt „Arbeit an unlösbaren Problemen“ (www.denkerei-berlin.de).

Garth Erasmus (lebt in Kapstadt, Südafrika) ist Künstler und Musiker. Threnody for the KhoiSan ist sein erstes Album unter eigenem Namen. Seit 1985 haben sich seine künstlerischen Interessen auf die Musik, das Entwerfen und den Bau eigener Instrumente auf der Grundlage des indigenen Wissens der KhoiSan ausgeweitet.

Von 1999 bis 2012 war Garth Erasmus Mitglied der südafrikanischen Aktivistengruppe KhoiKhonnexion. Seine musikalischen Arbeiten sind vor allem durch eine rastlose Suche nach alternativen Ausdrucksformen und Materialien wie selbstgebauten Instrumenten, Field Recordings oder verschiedenen elektronischen Musikgeräten gekennzeichnet. In diesem Kontext erhält die Musik auf Threnody for the KhoiSan eine ursprüngliche und metaphorische Bedeutung. „Als ich in den 1980er Jahren anfing, meine eigenen Instrumente zu bauen, war es meine Absicht, Kunstobjekte zu schaffen, aber als ich den Klang entdeckte, den sie erzeugten, öffnete sich eine Tür, die mich auf meiner Suche zu der Erkenntnis brachte, dass ich auf dem richtigen Weg war.“ Tatsächlich sind alle Instrumente, die auf Threnody for the KhoiSan zu hören sind, Produkte eines Entdeckungsprozesses, der bei Null anfing und auf der Schönheit und Einfachheit des einsaitigen Khoisan-Musikbogens und Pfeils als Trance Musikinstrument basiert.

We warmly invite you to two special events at Ludwig Forum in December: On Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at 6pm, art theorist Bazon Brock will give a lecture on sustainability in relation to curatorial practices, which will take place in cooperation with RWTH Aachen. On Sunday, December 15, 2024, Garth Erasmus will present his latest album Threnody for the KhoiSan together with musicians Carina Khorkhordina, Ruth May, Peter Thiessen and Stefan Schneider. The concert starts at 5pm.

We would also like to inform you that the artist lecture by Ayo Akingbade initially planned for Thursday, December 12, 2024 and the guided tour with director Eva Birkenstock are postponed to Thursday, January 23, 2025. We will of course send you a reminder in the new year! However, we are happy to offer another guided tour with curator Holger Otten through the current show On the Volcano on December 12, 2024 at 6pm.

Bazon Brock’s lecture is part of this year’s program offered by the Department of Architectural Theory at RWTH Aachen, which deals with curatorial practices focusing on sustainability. With his lecture titled Zeigekunst: KuratorInnen als Zauberlehrlinge. Wie man hinsieht durch Wegsehen, wie man beginnt aufs Ende hin, wie man auf das zeigt, was nicht gezeigt wird (Curators as magician’s apprentices. How to look by looking away, how to begin towards the end, how to point at what is not shown), Bazon Brock will present the results of his many years of reflection on the subject. The event is not only aimed at students but open for anyone interested. The lecture will be held in German. Free admission.

Bazon Brock is Emeritus Professor at the Chair of Aesthetics and Cultural Mediation at the University of Wuppertal. He also held professorships at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (1965–1976) and the University of Applied Arts, Vienna (1977–1980). He received an honorary degree from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (1992) and from the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (2012). In 2014 he was awarded an honorary professorship in the field of prophecy at the HBKsaar, Saarbrücken and in 2016 he was awarded the Von der Heydt Prize of the City of Wuppertal. In 2017, he received the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art 1st Class. Brock developed the method of “Action Teaching”, in which every sentence becomes a stage. He founded the documenta visitor schools in Kassel which he ran from 1968 to 1992. Since 2011, he has been running the Denkerei in Berlin as the “Institute for Theoretical Art, Universal Poetry and Prognostics”, with a focus on “Working on Unsolvable Problems” (www.denkerei-berlin.de).

Garth Erasmus is an artist and musician based in Cape Town, South Africa. Threnody for the KhoiSan is his first album under his own name. Since 1985 his artistic interests have broadened to include music-making, designing and making his own instruments based on indigenous Khoisan knowledge.

From 1999 to 2012 Garth Erasmus was a member of the South African First Nation activist group KhoiKhonnexion. His works in music are predominantly characterized by a restless quest for alternative forms of expression and materials including self build instruments, field recordings or various electronic music devices. In this context the music on Threnody for the KhoiSan takes on a primal and metaphorical meaning. ‘When I started to make my own instruments in the 1980s, my intention was to create art objects but when I discovered the sound they made, it unlocked a door that transported me deeper in my quest in the realization that I was on the right path.’ In fact all instruments which appear on Threnody for the KhoiSan are products of a process of discovery starting from square one. All this is based and founded on the beauty of simplicity and minimalism as symbolized by the single string Khoisan musical bow and arrow as trance musical instrument.

Am Freitag, den 13. Dezember um 16 Uhr wird das neue Künstlerbuch von Ton Slits – Voll und Ganz 1984-2024 im IKOB, präsentiert.

Ton Slits, der mit mehreren Werken in der Sammlung des IKOB vertreten und als Kurator an dem aktuellen Ausstellungsprojekt INTO THE VOID beteiligt ist, wird mit Direktor Frank-Thorsten Moll ein Künstlergespräch führen.

Die Ausstellung präsentiert Kunstwerke die sich rhythmisch aufbauen und farbliche Schwingungen erzeugen. Die Werke entstehen aus verwobenen Farbtönen, die flimmernde und zugleich malerische Eindrücke vermitteln.

Prepositions by Timmy Simonds & Aaron Lehman: Book Launch

Montez Press is pleased to invite you to the launch of Prepositions, an artist book by Timmy Simonds and Aaron Lehman, on Saturday 7th December from 6:30pm at The Performing Garage, NYC. The night will feature readings from artists and writers Timmy Simonds, Aaron Lehman, Ona Lindquist, Bethany Ides, Thom Donovan, Malcolm Peacock, and Assembly, and will also be broadcast live on MPR.

Prepositions enacts a distinction between what language says and what it does. A catalogue of exercises, interviews, essays and creative explorations, this workbook-compendium invites the reader to investigate how we practise empathy, understanding, and contact, by learning and teaching all at once. Building on the archive of Montez Press Radio show Tongue and Cheek, and featuring work from Assembly, CAConrad, Thom Donovan, Joseph Grigely, Bethany Ides, Thomas Laprade, Shaun Leonardo, Ona Lindquist, Ben Morgan-Cleveland, and Malcolm Peacock, Prepositions asks us what active and embodied participation really means, not just in teaching, but across a whole life.

December Interjection: Four Poems  – Cheryl Clarke

Poet, critic, and activist Cheryl Clarke was born in Washington, DC. She earned her BA from Howard University and her MA and PhD from Rutgers University. Clarke recently published Archive of Style: New and Selected Poems (2024) and is the author of five collections of poetry: Narratives: Poems in the Tradition of Black Women (1983), Living as a Lesbian (1986), Humid Pitch (1989), Experimental Love (1993), and By My Precise Haircut (2016), which won a Hilary Tham Capital Competition. She wrote the critical study “After Mecca”: Women Poets and the Black Arts Movement (2005), and a volume collecting her poetry and prose was published as The Days of Good Looks: Prose and Poetry of Cheryl Clarke, 1980–2005 (2006).

Clarke served as editor for Conditions, an influential journal of lesbian feminist literature. Many of Clarke’s most influential essays, including “Lesbianism: an Act of Resistance” and “The Failure to Transform: Homophobia in the Black Community,” first appeared in landmark publications such as This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color (1981) and Home Girls: A Black Feminist Anthology (1983).

All of Clarke’s writings advocate for queer communities of color, paying attention to the social implications of language and labels and the possibilities of art and activism to stage resistance to dominant culture.

Clarke was an influential administrator and teacher at Rutgers for more than 40 years. She founded the Office of Diverse Community Affairs and Lesbian-Gay Concerns, which became the Office of Social Justice Education and LGBT Communities, and retired as the Livingstone Dean of Students in 2013. For her service to LGBTQ communities, Clarke received a David Kessler Award. She currently lives in Hobart, New York, where she owns and operates Blenheim Hill Books with her partner, Barbara J. Balliet.

Der NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein lädt Sie herzlich zur diesjährigen NAK Benefiz Auktion ein. Die Auktion findet komplett online statt, aktuell befinden wir uns in der ersten Versteigerungswoche, die am kommenden Sonntag endet. Alle Werke können zeitgleich im NAK in einer Ausstellung besichtigt werden. Am heutigen Dienstag, den 03. Dezember ist der NAK darüber hinaus bis 22 Uhr geöffnet. Wir laden zum Get-Together mit Glühwein in den Kunstverein ein und stellen Ihnen gerne einzelne Auktionsarbeiten und Positionen im persönlichen Gespräch vor.

AUSSTELLUNG + GET-TOGETHER //

Weiterhin werden alle zu ersteigernden Arbeiten in einer Ausstellung vor Ort im Kunstverein präsentiert. Die Arbeiten können bis zum 22. Dezember täglich (außer montags) von 14 bis 18 Uhr im Kunstverein besichtigt werden. Am Dienstag, den 03., 10. und 17. Dezember hat der NAK darüber hinaus bis 22 Uhr geöffnet; hier bietet das Team beratend Führungen durch die Ausstellung an und stellt sich Ihren Fragen zu Werken und Künstler_innen.

“Genesis,” a group exhibition featuring works exploring the space of energetic transference as artistic conception reaches out towards the gesture. Here the gestures of creation are often typified by singular movements, suspensions and distillations. The exhibition locates the impetus of artistic production between its “source” (γένεσις ) and its “becoming” (γίγνομαι). OV’s proposal takes as its art historical “figure 1,” La main négative, reflecting the echoes of bursts of ground rock pigments over hands whose contact with the first gallery walls produced traces of their own absence.

 

The inclusion of Constantin Brâncuși’s photograph, L’oiseau dans l’espace (1925-26), is emblematic. The reference provided by the exhibition’s title, “Genesis” describes its production–the performative gesture executed initially in plaster with both hands clasped together, moving upward to produce the work’s iconic shape, pointing towards the infinite.

 

The question of the initial gesture is a question of origins; it emanates from some concealed reservoir, as it is made visible, tangible, in an instant. Representative of artists’ cultivation of these preconditions is Takahashi Kaishu’s bronze vessel–connecting the syntax of Modernism with that of ikebana. It is accompanied by a 1950’s photograph by Ken Domon, depicting an arrangement of the period. The vessels’ interior connotes the wellspring where creativity makes birth, is distilled and refined. Where Kaishu anticipates the gesture, Domon suspends it, not unlike a bird in flight.

 

Complexity of concept is hidden by gestures' transparency, as if when confronted by the beholder, the energetic burst is reproduced with each viewing. This artwork-beholder relationship is most evident in Badrinath Pandit’s Tantric work on paper, produced in the wake of deep meditation, uniting Siva and Saktí into a singular image. The image, a distillation itself, then returns to become the subject of meditation by its viewership. In the contemporary context, Franz West brings these concerns to the fore in his sculptural practice. His works on display are intended to be handled in a manner reminiscent of their initial production. Goro Kakei’s sculptures are produced from the rawest of materials–wood and paint–anthropomorphic forms between figuration and abstraction, raised up on its metal stand. Richard Nonas’ saw cuts, shaving the corners from a steel block, are equally transparent in their execution, highlighting their absence, their negative.

 

The thematics of suspension are perhaps most present in Teresa Solar’s work, Pequeña manía mecánica. A pair of glazed ceramic hoops are delicately held aloft by their wiry pedestal, giving a distinct impression of objects hovering in space. The forms are a result of temporal, yet actual, suspension. In their process of becoming, they are spun through the air in her studio, allowing centrifugal force to do its work on the material, effectively dispelling gravity, if only for a moment. Echos of suspension are felt throughout the exhibition in the works of Luca Vanello, Stief DeSmet, and Virginia Overton.

 

From a suspended position, “Genesis” addresses its subjects, of creativity, complexity, refinement and motion, as an open field. The approach is not narratological, but instead constellatory. The bursts of energy, of idea, of gesture, are spread far and wide across space and time, across history and culture. Suspended all at once they fill a night sky, perhaps traversed by Brâncuși’s Bird.

Hello Everyone,

Since our last communique so much has happened I’m not sure where to begin.

Perhaps the biggest news first: we have a new home!
Since the middle of September, we’ve been housed at an address many of you will know: Quai des Charbonnages 30/34, in Molenbeek. We’re one floor below our friends at Q-O2, just above our friends at iMAL and the Fablab, and sharing the new space with fieldworks.

Just a few weeks ago, “Overtoon” was added to this illustrious wall:

We also had the privilege of co-producing Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman’s new work, that which is heard, that which is remembered pt. 1, as a part of OORtreders Festival.

Though we’re close to the end of the year, there are still a few Overtoon occasions to note:

  • First, next Sunday, the 8th of November, at 20:00, Overtoon presents ⎤⎤⎤, live at Kiosk Radio.

    ⎤⎤⎤ is an experimental noise project formed by Grace Villamil & Chantal Michelle, working across performance and installation. For Kiosk, ⎤⎤⎤ will perform a fully live improvised set of voice and electronics.

  • Then, just one day later, in the Overtoon workspace on the 9th of November, also at 20:00, our final resident of the year Grace Villamil will introduce mumulak to Belgium.

One week from today then, come meet mumulak, have a peek at the new space, and let’s say adieu together to this endless year!

Das Team des Ludwig Forum Aachen trauert um den Gründungsdirektor Dr. Wolfgang Becker. Er ist am 28. November im Alter von 88 Jahren verstorben. 

Dr. Wolfgang Becker (1936 – 2024) gehörte als Mitinitiator sowie als legendärer Gründungsdirektor der Neuen Galerie – Sammlung Ludwig im Jahr 1970 und später des Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst 1991 in Aachen fraglos zu den wichtigsten Protagonist*innen der städtischen Kulturszene. Gemeinsam mit dem Sammlerehepaar Peter und Irene Ludwig machte er die Domstadt weit über die Euregio Maas-Rhein hinaus zu einem Mittelpunkt der zeitgenössischen Kunst. Durch sein außergewöhnliches Engagement und seine hohe Sensibilität für die Avantgarde förderte er internationale wie lokale Künstler*innen gleichermaßen und setzte neue Maßstäbe für die Aachener Museumsarbeit. Nicht nur kuratierte und organisierte er eine schier unermessliche Anzahl von Ausstellungen, dank ihm erhielt Aachen ein Fenster zur internationalen Kunstwelt.

„Ohne sein einzigartiges avanciertes wie interdisziplinäres Programm in der ehemaligen Schirmfabrik Emil Brauer wäre das Ludwig Forum zweifellos nicht zu dem geworden, was es heute ist. Schon als Gründungsdirektor setze Wolfgang Becker zahlreiche wichtige Impulse, die bis in die Gegenwart wirken. Die Gedanken unseres gesamten Museumteams, auch aller ehemaligen Kolleg*innen, sind bei seiner Familie“, so Eva Birkenstock, Direktorin des Ludwig Forum Aachen.

Von 1967 bis 1969 arbeitete Wolfgang Becker zunächst als künstlerischer Werbeleiter für die Stadt Köln, wo er Peter und Irene Ludwig kennenlernte, deren enger Wegbegleiter er wurde. Als Direktor der Neuen Galerie – Sammlung Ludwig im Alten Kurhaus in Aachen setze er bereits ein interdisziplinäres Ausstellungs-, Veranstaltungs- und Vermittlungsprogramm um, in dessen Zentrum die Sammlung Ludwig und deren Neuerwerbungen standen. So war er u.a. maßgeblich für die ersten Ankäufe von Film- und Videoarbeiten verantwortlich, die den Grundstein des heutigen Bestands an Videokunst der Sammlung Ludwig legten. Ebenso arbeitete er daran mit, die Sammlung um Positionen aus den ehemaligen Sowjetrepubliken sowie um Konvolute chinesischer und kubanischer Kunst zu ergänzen.

Als Gründungsdirektor des Ludwig Forum für Internationale Kunst aktivierte Becker ab 1991 das Museum an der Jülicher Straße als internationales Forum der Künste, dessen spartenübergreifendes Programm weit über die Grenzen der Stadt hinaus geschätzt wurde. Bis zu seinem Ruhestand im Jahr 2001 arbeitete mit internationalen ebenso wie mit Künstler*innen aus der Umgebung zusammen und realisierte erste Einzelpräsentationen mit u.a. Roy Lichtenstein, Duane Hanson, Barbara und Michael Leisgen, A.R. Penck, Georg Baselitz, On Kawara, Nancy Graves, Nan Goldin oder Keith Haring. Ebenso kuratierte er Gruppenausstellungen wie „Les Nouveaux Fauves – Die Neuen Wilden“ – deren Titel später zu einem prägnanten Begriff im kunstgeschichtlichen Diskurs werden sollte – und brachte gemeinsam mit Peter und Irene Ludwig die 5. Havanna Biennale 1994 nach Aachen.

The team of Ludwig Forum Aachen mourns the loss of founding director Dr. Wolfgang Becker. He passed away on November 28 at the age of 88. 

As co-initiator and founding director of the Neue Galerie – Sammlung Ludwig in 1970 and later of the Ludwig Forum for International Art in Aachen in 1991, Dr. Wolfgang Becker (1936 – 2024) was undoubtedly one of the most important protagonists of the city’s cultural scene. Together with the collector couple Peter and Irene Ludwig, he turned the city into a center of contemporary art far beyond the Euregio Meuse-Rhine area. With his extraordinary commitment and his high sensitivity for the avant-garde, he supported international and local artists alike and set new standards for Aachen’s cultural life and museums. Not only did he curate and organize an almost immeasurable number of exhibitions – with him, Aachen gained a window to the international art world.

“Without his unique, advanced and interdisciplinary program in the former Emil Brauer umbrella factory, the Ludwig Forum would undoubtedly not have become what it is today. As its founding director Wolfgang Becker provided numerous impulses that continue to have a crucial impact. The thoughts of our entire museum team, including all former colleagues, are with his family,” says Eva Birkenstock, Director of the Ludwig Forum Aachen.

From 1967 to 1969, Wolfgang Becker initially worked as artistic advertising manager for the city of Cologne, where he first met Peter and Irene Ludwig, with whom he would continue to work very closely. As director of the Neue Galerie – Sammlung Ludwig in the Altes Kurhaus in Aachen, he was already implementing an interdisciplinary exhibition, event and mediation program, which focused on the Ludwig Collection and its new acquisitions. Among other things, he was largely responsible for the first acquisitions of film and video works, which laid the foundation for the Ludwig Collection’s current holdings of video art, and was deeply involved in expanding the collection towards artworks from countries of the former Soviet Union, China, and Cuba.

As founding director of the Ludwig Forum for International Art, Becker activated the museum on Jülicher Strasse from 1991 onwards as an international forum for the arts, whose interdisciplinary program was appreciated far beyond the city’s borders. Until his retirement in 2001, he worked with both international and local artists and realized his first solo presentations with artists such as Roy Lichtenstein, Duane Hanson, Barbara and Michael Leisgen, A.R. Penck, Georg Baselitz, On Kawara, Nancy Graves, Nan Goldin and Keith Haring. He also curated group exhibitions such as “Les Nouveaux Fauves – Die Neuen Wilden” (The New Wild Ones) – the title of which would later become a concise term in art historical discourse – and brought, together with Peter and Irene Ludwig, the 5th Havana Biennial to the Ludwig Forum in 1994.

Stéphanie Baechler (°1983, Meyriez, CH) lives and works in Amsterdam. She has exhibited at MAHF, Fribourg, Chamber Gallery New York, Kunsthalle Fri Art Fribourg, Kunsthaus Centre d’art Pasquart Biel, Sankt Gallen in Switzerland, Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and Mode Museum Antwerpen, among others. Her works are in public and private collections such as HEAD Geneva, Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and MAHF Fribourg.
This is the first exhibition of her work in the gallery in Brussels. Baechler is interested in the interplay between craft and technology; the complex and often ambiguous relationship between handmade and machine-made results. Textile and clay are the main materials she uses in her sculptures and installations. Her work is characterised by a sensitive, intuitive and process-oriented approach to materials. During the past summer months, she showed an impressive installation at the Tröckneturm (drying tower) in Sankt Gallen, Switzerland. She also created a book – historically documented – for this event, together with publisher Rudy Guedj of Building Fictions. The works in this exhibition are inspired by and build on this installation.
 
Joke Hansen (b 1979, Bilzen, BE) lives in Bilzen and works in Hasselt. Her work has been exhibited at Kunsthalle Recklinghausen in Germany, Z33 in Hasselt and SMAK in Ghent, among others.
This is the first show of her work in the gallery in Brussels. Hansen plays with strange shapes and cut-outs in her wooden panels and ‘shaped canvases’. Sometimes she also paints these shapes on a photograph of a landscape. They imply an extra dimension, a portal to another world or the next level. Each new work clashes with a delicate balance between resolving unpleasant compositional tensions and finding just enough interesting friction. She herself often describes the dancing holes, tubes and tunnels in her works as escape routes. For a year now, she has also been making sculptures that hang on the wall. The elements spaced out in her larger works are assembled and balled into sculptural volumes, which play equally with layers and perspective; less from an essential reduction and more from a mass; not in paint, but in a third dimension. Neither finding nor stacking these elements is done strategically. Everything is intuitive and spontaneous.

[EN] callisto’s walk is a soundwalk where the audience is gathered and a storyteller introduces them to callisto’s postindustrial myth and her power of hybridising inner spaces into outside spaces and viceversa. The audience is then invited for a walk while listening to an audio file.

[NL] callisto’s walk is een geluidswandeling waarbij het publiek bijeenkomt en een verteller hen laat kennismaken met de postindustriële mythe van callisto en haar vermogen om binnenruimtes te hybridiseren met buitenruimtes en vice versa. Het publiek wordt vervolgens uitgenodigd voor een wandeling met audio.

[FR] callisto’s walk est une promenade sonore au cours de laquelle une narratrice présente au public le mythe postindustriel de callisto, ainsi que son pouvoir d’hybridation des espaces intérieurs en espaces extérieurs, et vice-versa. Volgende week: de Appel Kiosk op de Dappermarkt door Espacio Estamos Bien
Volgende week vindt de tweede iteratie van de Appel’s experimentele Kiosk plaats op de Dappermarkt in Amsterdam-Oost. Deze keer zal Espacio Estamos Bien, in samenwerking met Lorenzo García-Andrade, een ruimte creëren voor alternatieve uitwisseling, gericht op niet-monetaire economieën, gastvrijheid, de schenk-traditie van de potlatch en coöperatieve waarden. De kraam, DOOS ¡No hacemos moneda falsa!, zal worden gevuld met objecten in dozen die zijn gestuurd door vrienden en samenwerkingspartners van over de hele wereld. Voorwerpen en kunst-miscellanea zullen worden uitgewisseld met behulp van creatieve ruilmethoden zoals gunsten, brieven, wensen of andere voorwerpen. Doe mee aan deze correspondentie door de dozen te vullen met voorwerpen en gedachten, waarna we de dozen terugsturen naar de afzenders.

Houd onze Instagram-pagina in de gaten, want ‘s ochtends vroeg posten we waar en wanneer de Kiosk op de markt zal staan, en geven we meer informatie over de afsluitende bijeenkomst.

Op zaterdag 7 december vindt er een slotmoment plaats in het buurthuis en vrijwinkel Afvalpaleis aan de Dapperstraat.

De kunstenaars en de Appel bedanken NieuwLand voor de logistieke ondersteuning.

Meer over de Appel Kiosk
Geïnspireerd door onze vrienden in de lumbung, die nog steeds een lumbung kiosk runnen, en andere initiatieven van kunstenaars om hun collectieven in stand te houden en deel te nemen aan kleine economieën, heeft de Appel een experimentele kiosk gelanceerd in samenwerking met kunstenaars Metti/Waèl el Allouche (die de kiosk afgelopen oktober hebben gehost) en Espacio Estamos Bien voor 2024. De kunstenaars hebben hun eigen kramen, en daarmee hun eigen economieën ontwikkeld.

Espacio Estamos Bien (EEB) is een kunstcoöperatie* gevestigd in Amsterdam die bijeenkomsten, publicaties en tentoonstellingen organiseert. EEB begon met het idee van een nieuwe ruimte in Amsterdam – niet per se een fysieke – die een affectieve en ondersteunende context zou kunnen bieden. Een ruimte voor hen die niet thuishoren in het institutionele circuit. Een ruimte die altijd verandert, altijd in beweging is, maar altijd bereikbaar is. EEB initieert gesprekken en faciliteert ontmoetingen. EEB is opgericht door Mariana Jurado Rico en Francisca Khamis Giacoman.

*Een coöperatie is een autonome vereniging van personen, vrijwillig verenigd om een democratische organisatie te vormen waarvan de administratie en het beheer moeten worden uitgevoerd op een manier die door de leden is overeengekomen.
