Q-O2 news :: Oscillation ::: The Weather 1/05 – 4/05

 workspace for experimental music and sound art

Festival
1 May – 4 May
Oscillation ::: The Weather

High time to break the ice, because a ray of sunshine bursts through the gray cloud cover over Brussels: Oscillation ::: The Weather is here. After last year’s six-day edition, we are returning to a more compact format, with 4 days of concerts, (in-situ) performances, a conference, round table conversations, walks, a series of workshops, a field trip and an uninterrupted radio stream. All of this is hosted by Le Brass, BiS (Bodies in Space), atelier 210, La Cheminée and more places to be announced. The complete line-up and breakdown per day will go online soon, as will the ticket sales for seperate days. Festival passes are already available here.

This year, we will depart from practices around field recording – listening to one’s environment through microphones, memory, or language. The festival will link field recording to the weather as phenomenon, as metaphor, and as concept, able to cause poetic and beautiful effects but also to manifest radically destructive events. In both field recording and the weather we are reminded that environments are in perpetual change.

Exploring weather as a general condition, informed by climate, temperature, humidity, pressure, and changes in atmosphere, the festival will present and discuss various practices of field recording and their use in art and science. Performances, walks, on-site workshops, and talks will provide the opportunity to experience different modes of listening to the environment, permeated by the various and varying phenomena that weather comprises.

Featuring: Áine O’Dwyer, Amber Meulenijzer, Catherine Lamb & Rebecca Lane & Bryan Eubanks (Sacred Realism), d’incise, David Toop, Gabi Schaffner, Jana Winderen, Jonathan Frigeri, Marja Ahti, Marta Zapparoli, meLê yamomo, Nele Möller, Pat Thomas, Soumaya Phéline, Silvia Tarozzi & Deborah Walker, Tzu Ni, Vanessa Rossetto, Yara Mekawei, and more to be announced.

Head in the clouds,
The Oscillation Weather Station

Q-O2 is funded by the Flemish Community, VGC Brussels, and the European Union.

___________________________________________________________

Emilie Terlinden (°1983, Brussels, lives and works in Brussels) is a visual artist whose painting practice draws inspiration from Flemish masters, exploring the interplay between abstraction and still life. Holding a Master’s degree in Visual Arts from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels (2018), her work weaves elements of Renaissance imagery and everyday objects into intricate, baroque-inspired compositions. Terlinden’s work is held in the prestigious Belfius Art Collection, alongside numerous private collections. Her work has been featured in group exhibitions at Kanal Centre Pompidou in Brussels, the Ianchelevici Museum in La Louvière, and Oppenheim Palace in Cologne. Her accolades include the Laurent Moonens Art Prize (2018), a special mention for the Jos Albert Art Prize (2020), and selections for the Jean and Irène Ransy Art Prize (2017 and 2020), along with multiple nominations for distinguished art awards.

Joy Boy,
a Tribute to Julius Eastman

Collectif Faire-Part, Victoire Karera Kampire, Fallon Mayanja, Benjamin Mengistu Navet and Mawena Yehouessi.

Julius Eastman (1940–1990) was an African American minimalist composer, pianist, vocalist, and performer whose ‘organic music’ offered social and political commentary.

Joy Boy was originally developed as the visual concept for a live performance by the S.E.M. Ensemble, commissioned by De Singel. In NW, it has evolved into a self-contained, multidimensional installation spread across three spaces. combines visual, sonic, and choreographic interpretations, inspired by conversations between the artists and their personal connections to Eastman. Finally, Benjamin Mengistu Navet investigates how a musical score by Julius Eastman could be translated into a jacquard weave. The exhibition highlights the impact of Eastman’s minimalist music as a powerful tool for political change and rehabilitation.

Prologue

Ula Sickle

The first part of A Choreographic Exhibition—which in May will occupy NW’s building with live performances and video works created between 2018 and 2024. In her interdisciplinary choreographic practice, Sickle draws on visual art, music, and contemporary culture at large to explore everyday life under the conditions of late capitalism. In Prologue, the artist focuses on the central role of photography in her choreographic practice.

INFO~ANGEL: over the water

On the straightening of the Dender and the development of Right Bank Aalst

In 1863, the Dender River was straightened through the centre of Aalst, transforming the city’s mobility and industrial landscape. The first episode of the three-part series on ‘Aalst Rechteroever’ examines the neighbourhood’s development through the lens of the river and its residents. Are the perceptions, emotions, and stigmas passed down through history permanently bound to the neighborhood?

Visiting us at another time?

From Saturday 8.2, the exhibitions can be visited during our usual opening hours: Thursday to Sunday from 13:00 to 18:00.

THE SWAMP POTENTIAL
Kunstlicht vol. 45 (2024), no. 3-4
Guest Editors: Robbie Schweiger & Suzie van Staaveren

We are thrilled to announce the second Kunstlicht issue of 2024!

Guest edited by Robbie Schwiger and Suzie van Staaveren, The Swamp Potential has arrived, ready to be your thought-provoking companion throughout the rest of the winter.

“Going beyond the swamp’s ecological potential as carbon sinks and buffer zones between land and water in times of climate crisis, this issue of Kunstlicht positions swamps as entities, spaces, and communities where complexity, interspecies interdependence, and relationality take precedence over human domination and productivity. Contributions to this issue under-score the swamp’s potential as a disruptive, polychronic space, resisting linear time and capitalist notions of progress. They explore how swamps preserve mythologies and provide material evidence that past and present, life and death are interconnected, and offer alternative ways of grieving and co-existing. Swamps, as spaces where many worlds fit, invite us to rethink our relationship with the environment, embracing uncertainty and doubt as generative forces for transformative thought.”

We hope you enjoy reading The Swamp Potential!

de Appel nieuwsbrief: februari 2025

Beste vrienden,

Protest;
Grow vegetables;
When in doubt, always speak up;
Read (more) novels (and finish them);
Dance more;
Walk more;
Keep hope;
Do more for a free Palestine;
Make the meaning of freedom a collective one, that all occupations will end, and that human rights will be upheld for everyone;
Follow Adrian Piper (again): “I hereby certify that I will always be too expensive to buy”;
Only check my emails twice a day;
Understand what it means to be distracted;
See the inability to see;
Love more;
Meditate more, read more, sing more;
Have a radio show, even if it is only an hour;
Less social media;
Remain patient in continuing non-violent protests against human rights violations;
Check in with my body more;
Come up with even more and wilder freedom dreams;
Full emotional honesty and connectedness to the sacredness of Life, in all the beautiful forms it comes;
Follow John O’Donohue’s Fluent: “I would love to live like a river flows, carried by the surprise of its own unfolding.”

Woensdag 29 januari, 17:00 uur: Commons, the relational and affect – Gesprek met David Bollier en Commons Convergence Group

Lumbung drawing

Vrijdag 7 februari, 18:00 uur: My Garden’s Boundaries Are the Horizon – Performatieve lezing door To See the Inability to See

Mygarden detail kopie ren header

Vanaf zaterdag 8 februari: Leesgroep – Learning Community

Vrijdag 28 februari, 18:00 uur: My Garden’s Boundaries Are the Horizon – Lezing en gesprek met Lara Khaldi en Francisca Khamis Giacoman

Mygarden detail kopie ren banner

Shout-out: Edgelanders – Amsterdam On Trial – Next Chapter: The Indictment, donderdag 30 januari tot zondag 2 februari in De Brakke Grond

Q-O2 news :: Cure your winter blues with Q-O2’s agenda cues

 workspace for experimental music and sound art

Cure your winter blues with Q-O2’s agenda cues
A somewhat modest start to the year harbours the promise of a spectacular following: in less than one week we’re hosting no more than five events in twelve days in our microcosmos of sound. First up are the students of ENSAV La Cambre who present I’m so Borg, with works that were composed in the frame of the Sound Creation and Experimental Music course, in collaboration with Q-O2. Next up is the post-residency presentation by Jad Saliba with his research project on sonic resistance, Lām(ل). He is followed by a workshop circuit bending, which is part of our annual collaboration with La Semaine du Son (and unfortunately already sold out). Resident Claire Williams is next, sharing thoughts and sounds from an ongoing research on creating visible and non visible cobwebs that sense the electromagnetic activity of spaces. The Brussels-based collective Fenêtre Ovale is closing these 12 days, hosting the 57th Second Sundays listening session.
A little later we’re teaming up with a grand publishing house in music: local favourite KRAAK is coming to our place, for concerts by Steenkiste & Bischoff and former resident Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh, who recorded parts of her new album at our HQ with our dearest Ludo Engels, and who is also an Oscillation alumnus.

Concert
28 January – 18h – @Q-O2 – free
I’m so Borg – Students of La Cambre
Each year, Q-O2 welcomes students of ENSAV La Cambre for a Sound Creation and Experimental Music course. It offers a framework for listening, experimentation and reflection on sound-related issues, observed through the prism of body-machine relations. Taking as its starting point the ‘Cyborg Manifesto’ by Donna Haraway (1985), the course invites students to imagine a cyborgian language, to consider sound as a mutant language enabling communication between beings, bet they locusts, artificial intelligences, pigeons, humans, rocks.
With works by Charlotte Barreyre, Sam Boisbineuf, Marilou Dard, Dima Emelianenko, Adèle Fisch, Marius Herbert, Raphaël Humbert-Martin, Justine Jossen, Seza Lebars, Coline Lebeau, Mopsa Marciano, Léo Marybrasse, Dan Meyer, Nathan Pierard, Joseph Vincent, Sebastian Voigt.
[more info]

Post-residency presentation
30 January – 18h – @Q-O2
Jad Saliba
Jad’s research project Lām(ل) focuses on aspects of sonic resistance, solidarity and sonic identity, drawing an ark from the Tarweeda, a sonic tool for coded communication between detainees and their families, cleverly disguised in the form of songs, via the use of the letter Lam as an early form of a “glitch”, to the use of modern drum machines as a primary medium to communicate with the concept of Tarweeda. He asks: What forms of collaborative sonic practices could emerge from this interplay? Ultimately, what can the Tarweeda teach us about the process of decolonizing sound?
[more info]

Post-residency presentation
5 February – 18h – @Q-O2
Claire Williams
Claire Williams will share thoughts and sounds from an ongoing research on creating visible and non visible cobwebs that sense the electromagnetic activity of spaces. Inspired by ghost hunting tactics, she has crafted dowsing apparatus to receive and amplify these discrete energies that are woven together to reveal electromagnetic auras of resurrected circuits. A live extract will be presented to plunge into the shadows of our para-communications and listen to the xenovoices that want to manifest.

Second Sundays #57
9 February – 17h (doors 16h30) – @Q-O2 – free
Fenêtre Ovale
Fenêtre Ovale is a Brussels based collective of musicians, sound artists, composers, performers and listeners. They organize events, concerts and workshops, festering collaborations and sharing networks, knowledge and recources among the members. Providing space for ‘atypical’ sound practice in different terrains, the collective aims to decomplex ideas around elitism, often associated with electroacoustic music. In the hybridization of aesthetics, Fenêtre Ovale focuses on inclusive and sensitive approach to music making and mediation, mixing sound phenomenon with politics, philosophy and science.
Second Sundays is a monthly series initiated by Q-O2. Each session a new guest is invited to share an insight into their own listening, playing and speaking about a selection of sound and music that is important to their thinking or practice. The sessions try to put value on listening to recorded music in a social setting as a space for discussion.

KRAAK + Q-O2 concert collab
21 February – 20h (doors 19h30) – @Q-O2 – €6/€8/€10
Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh, Steenkiste & Bischoff
KRAAK and Q-O2 are stoked to host the release concert of Ailbhe Nic Oireachtaigh’s latest album Lux Gratis, out on CD February 18. Resulting from her 2024 residency in Q-O2, Lux Gratis takes Ailbhe down new roads of experimentation, integrating organs and electronics into her unrestrained sonic parlance. Flanked by the new-fangled duo of Steenkiste & Bischoff and their ringing drone magic, we’re all set to gather around for a night of auditory rapture alongside all ye eager-eared out there.

How to Mend a Broken Heart

Over HeArt Ma’at

Marie Zolamian (°1975, Beirut, LB ) lives and works in Liège. She has exhibited at Bombon projects gallery, Barcelona (2024); Jester/CIAP, Genk (2022); Mu.ZEE Ostend (2018); Künstlerhaus Bethanien, Berlin (2013) and participated in group exhibitions at BPS22, Charleroi (2023) and Wiels, Brussels (2021). Her work is included in several private and public collections, including BPS (Charleroi, BE), MACS (Grand Hornu, BE), Mu-ZEE (Ostend, BE), M Leuven (BE), Flemish community collection, National Bank of Belgium, Ministry of Foreign Affairs (BE), La Boverie (Liège, BE), Space collection (Liège, BE), Province of Liège (BE), MUMC (Maastricht, NL), EF Education First (CH & GB). One of her most important works is a 76m2 mosaic for the peristyle of KMSKA Antwerp (2022), for which she received the Ianchelevici prize for architectural integration.
In her oeuvre, Western and Eastern ways of life, thoughts and histories intermingle. An iconography emerges based on repeated attempts at integration, establishing links – sometimes discordant – between man and nature, memory of the individual and the collective, between tradition, separation and upheaval, between a place, a time and a culture.

Witold Vandenbroeck (°1994, Leuven, BE) lives and works in Antwerp. He is an artist, photographer and writer. His paintings can be read as a translation of his personal philosophy on the relationship between man and nature. This theme unfolds in the figuration of plants, stones and objects, which he depicts iconographically. In doing so, he tries to unravel the hidden structure of society driven by economic and political models and explore the value of authenticity. Thus, during long walks with or without a camera, he takes space and time to write, paint and simply be in the landscape. He looks for a connection that is missing in our society, especially in urban contexts.
This principle is also reflected in the materiality. In an artisanal way, he often, but not exclusively, mixes animal glue with natural pigments.

Fog

Frizz Gallery
29 November 2024–20 January 2025

Works by artists Onur Karaoğlu, Bárbara Acevedo Strange, Damon Zucconi, Jason Hendrik Hansma, Gwenneth Boelens, Aleksander Komarov and Jeroen Jacobs were presented as part of an exhibition called Fog, curated by Eloise Sweetman and Aleksander Komarov.
The exhibition unfolded in sequences, with each work manifesting the transformation of the space from 29 November till 20 January.

The concept of Fog explored the ephemeral nature of what is formed or discovered within the void of a space, emphasizing its ever-changing presence and transformation. The works presented engaged with the space, both in their appearance and their representation, creating a dialogue between the artworks and the environment. These works reference new ways of communication—both within the space and through the window to the outside space.

Thanks to all visitors and participating artists!

Catch a collective listening session/radio performance Three Categories hosted by former ABA resident, Dutch/Hungarian artist Dóra Benyó and the Belgo-German artist duo Office for Joint Administrative Intelligence (O.J.A.I).

Three Categories will air on 21 January, from 16:00–17:00. Tune in to Colaboradio via Freies Radio Berlin/Brandenburg 88,4 MHz in Berlin 90,7 MHz in Potsdam or listen online here

Or else! Attend the listening session in real life at Max in Brussels.

Central to the piece are the declassified secret service files compiled after the surveillance of Benyó’s grandfather, a research engineer and political activist during Hungary’s communist era. Our collaboration reimagines the architecture of the state archive, transforming it into a conceptual space representing totalitarian overreach through the excessive production of knowledge. O.J.A.I. contributes to this transformation by creating paranoid organizational atmospheres, conveyed through a series of fictional texts and modular sound compositions.

This project was developed by Dóra Benyó during her residency at ABA in 2024, which was generously supported by the Mondrian Funds. Farrelly’s practice is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland.

Dark shadowed eyes smiling at me,

Solomon Garçon (b. 1991, London) lives and works in London. In 2023, Garçon’s debut institutional solo exhibition ARMS was presented at Studio Voltaire, London. His work has been presented internationally at Galerie Buchholz (Fasanenstr. 31 space, 2023), and performed at Kunstverein München (2022), FOAM, Amsterdam (2022), Centre Pompidou, Paris (2021), Kampnagel, Hamburg, Café Oto, London (2020) and the South London Gallery, London (2019).

From the WR archive: A Year – Chanel Vegas

Throughout 2024 we’ve had a number of writer residents join us at the MP studio in London where they’ve received editorial support, time and space to create. Over the next year we’ll be sharing their work in our monthly newsletters and on our website.

Chanel Vegas is a London-born artist and graduate of Goldsmiths University. As a working-class artist and a person of colour, she represents a voice that is increasingly rare in today’s art world. Notably, she was the first graduate to receive the Artist Award from Goldsmiths.

Chanel’s practice centers on transforming surfaces through sound and acts of destruction, blending physicality with conceptual depth. Recently she has been known for her trampoline paintings / performances where an NHS gown becomes the canvas, resembling the struggle of suffering from mental health and the strains on the NHS becoming privatised. Her performative work delves into the complexities of identity, exploring the internal divide, the “other side,” and the darkness that can consume us. Using spoken word and poetry, she breathes life into her sculptural paintings, creating a powerful interplay between text, performance, and form.

Introducing our guest editor for The Interjection Calendar IC011: Racheal Crowther

Racheal Crowther (b. Dublin, Ireland) lives and works in London. She holds a BA in Fine Art and Critical Thinking from Goldsmiths University of London and has just completed her Postgraduate Diploma from Royal Academy Schools, Royal Academy of Arts, London.

With an interest in biopolitical structures and the physical and psychological bounds of the spaces we inhabit (both public and private), she explores the social constructs surrounding material function. Pulling from the social, commercial, and institutional environments she has traversed; these experiences are articulated through works which include hacking radio frequencies, sculptural sound works and utilising olfactive materials to make visible the psychosocial dysfunction within systems of governance & surveillance.

Stéphanie Baechler (°1983, Meyriez, CH) lives and works in Amsterdam. She has exhibited at MAHF, Fribourg, Chamber Gallery New York, Kunsthalle Fri Art Fribourg, Kunsthaus Centre d’art Pasquart Biel, Sankt Gallen in Switzerland, Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam and Mode Museum Antwerpen, among others. Her works are in public and private collections such as HEAD Geneva, Museum für Gestaltung Zürich and MAHF Fribourg.
This is the first exhibition of her work in the gallery in Brussels. Baechler is interested in the interplay between craft and technology; the complex and often ambiguous relationship between handmade and machine-made results. Textile and clay are the main materials she uses in her sculptures and installations. Her work is characterised by a sensitive, intuitive and process-oriented approach to materials. During the past summer months, she showed an impressive installation at the Tröckneturm (drying tower) in Sankt Gallen, Switzerland. She also created a book – historically documented – for this event, together with publisher Rudy Guedj of Building Fictions. The works in this exhibition are inspired by and build on this installation.

Joke Hansen (b 1979, Bilzen, BE) lives in Bilzen and works in Hasselt. Her work has been exhibited at Kunsthalle Recklinghausen in Germany, Z33 in Hasselt and SMAK in Ghent, among others.
This is the first show of her work in the gallery in Brussels. Hansen plays with strange shapes and cut-outs in her wooden panels and ‘shaped canvases’. Sometimes she also paints these shapes on a photograph of a landscape. They imply an extra dimension, a portal to another world or the next level. Each new work clashes with a delicate balance between resolving unpleasant compositional tensions and finding just enough interesting friction. She herself often describes the dancing holes, tubes and tunnels in her works as escape routes. For a year now, she has also been making sculptures that hang on the wall. The elements spaced out in her larger works are assembled and balled into sculptural volumes, which play equally with layers and perspective; less from an essential reduction and more from a mass; not in paint, but in a third dimension. Neither finding nor stacking these elements is done strategically. Everything is intuitive and spontaneous.

Christian Odzuck: Unendliche Bibliothek
