Saturday 1 April (not joking!) marks the return of Indiscipline, the annual happening with performances and experimental interventions in the Grand Casino of Knokke-Heist.

Experience live performances by renowned international performers! Once again there is a fantastic and packed programme: visual artist Mounira Al Solh, who you may remember from her work and performance during Risquons-Tous at WIELS, explores the context of the casino in Knokke and evokes memories of her family who had to trade their possessions to make a new start in life.

There will also be performances and interventions by: Darius Dolatyari-Dolatdoust, Kiluanji Kia Henda, Emmilou Roessling and Stine Janvin.

The Casino is located right on the seafront in Knokke-Heist a stone’s throw from the beach, restaurants and galleries!

Dive into history and relive the legendary EXPRMNTL film festival (1949-1974) with Xavier Garcia Bardon who will share stories and gossip surrounding this infamous avant-garde film festival that took place in the same unlikely location of the casino in Knokke.

Indiscipline is more than just performances, but a real happening where you can spend a few hours and enjoy snacks and drinks served by Point Albert.

Sing along with Antwerp-based women’s choir The Zangles who cheerfully lead us into the night with their huge egos and tiny voices. Will it be a musical? Will it be a lottery? Nobody knows! One thing is certain: it will be a lot of fuss about nothing.

Previous chapters of this piece have been presented as INSTRUCTIONS (#0.a Theater Space) at CCHA, Hasselt, BE and INSTRUCTIONS (#0.b RED COMFORT) at De Studio, Antwerp, BE.

fluent is pleased to present INSTRUCCIONES (Capilla), a newly commissioned performance by Margaux Schwarz in which, departing from the suggestive architecture of the space, she reflects upon issues of transparency, intimacy and power.
INSTRUCCIONES (Capilla) is a performance where a woman, equipped with a headset and earphones, creates a perimetral movement while repeating a pre-recorded voice flowing in her ears. While walking, she addresses a series of interactions with different people who are not presented to us, akin to a kind of training, which is in turns condescending, mothering or authoritarian when she’s not herself dominated. These instructions are all given in the name of an unspecified «We».

Can the repetition of language, intensity and tone reveal invisibilized contracts between subjects, economies and  social roles? Through this question, Schwarz interrogates whether is it possible to activate new interactions between a collective form of intimacy and social power–dynamics.

Margaux Schwarz is a French artist and researcher based in Brussels. Her work takes many forms, such as conversational performances, sound pieces, short stories, scripts or events. Through them, she examines the prominent role of dramaturgy, performativity and story-telling in our society. Her doctoral research (UHasselt / PXL-MAD School of Arts) is informed by fields such as digital anthropology and the sociology of work. It explores power structures in language and communication, with a specific focus on performative strategies used in socio–professional interactions.

C’est un grand plaisir de vous annoncer à nouveau notre participation à la Drawing Now Art Fair de Paris, qui aura lieu du jeudi 23 au dimanche 26 mars.

 

Pour cette 16ème édition, nous vous présentons les oeuvres de l’artiste portugaise, Gabriela Albergaria (1965). Ses oeuvres nous montrent des paysages imaginés, fruit du dialogue entre l’action humaine et la nature et de l’intersection entre les références sociales et collectives, les expériences personnelles et subjectives de l’artiste.

Ontdek Sculptura1#, een parade van sculpturen en installaties in de monumentale hallen van Gare Martime, een voormalig treinstation in Tour & Taxis. Ontmoet Ake Verstraeten, beeldenliefhebber en drijvende kracht achter dit nieuwe Belgische beeldenfestival.

De interviews van Hilde Van Canneyt zijn voor kunstenaars een uitdagende zelfbevraging. Het zijn eerlijke woord-portretten die vaak letterlijk de taal van de gesprekspartner weergeven. Zo krijgt de lezer een unieke inkijk in het atelier en het hoofd van de kunstenaar. ‘Wat speelt er zich af achter het gordijn van het atelier en het beeldend kunstgebeuren? Wat gebeurt er tussen de eerste gedachtekronkel en het afgewerkt kunstproduct? Hoe moet je als kunstenaar alle elementen die in je geest borrelen, omzetten in een kunstwerk dat je kwetsbaar maakt, maar tegelijkertijd de kijker moet beroeren? Dat is Hilde’s vraagstelling: waarom sluit iemand zich op om te communiceren via een creatie? Hoe om te gaan met de fictieve wereld van het kunstwerk tegenover de niet altijd even mooie realiteit? Want kunst maken is een proces. Als publiek zie je slechts het eindresultaat, terwijl de weg ernaartoe even boeiend is. Meer dan tweehonderd kunstenaars lieten zich de voorbije tien jaar verleiden tot een openhartig gesprek met Hilde.

When I found myself on the Primula, these feelings transformed into images. The emotions that could be experienced after losing oneself are represented by different views of land and sea. As an outsider, I caught a glimpse of the life within these massive walls of steel. All connections got lost between head & body and vessel & mainland. 

Yet the Primula kept sailing as a world on its own. Aside from the different faces of the ocean, the rising and the setting of the sun and the changing of the people onboard, the ship kept on going.”

Le Casino Luxembourg renouvelle pour la sixième fois consecutive son partenariat avec le Luxembourg City Film Festival par le biais de films expérimentaux, d’ateliers créatifs  et de discussions de fond sur les facettes artistiques et sociales du cinéma.

Cartes blanches et collaborations artistiques 

Cette année, le Casino propose, dans le cadre de sa carte blanche, un film et une exposition en association avec les Rencontres Internationales Paris/Berlin – Nouveau cinéma et art contemporain :

« L’exposition Ecosystem Assembly et le choix du film, hors norme, de Jean-Luc Godard, Le livre d’image, procèdent tous deux d’une même nécessité, celle d’interroger, au travers des images, notre histoire – à un moment où sa propre fin s’annonce avec l’effondrement du vivant –, et de repenser un monde commun. »

L’exposition Ecosystem Assembly est conçue comme une assemblée entre des œuvres – film, vidéo, VR –, un lieu de dialogues silencieux entre elles, à partir de la notion de « zone critique » développée par Bruno Latour, cette zone complexe du vivant faite d’interactions et  de rétroactions, où l’humain et non-humain coexistent et partagent  un devenir incertain.

D’une diversité de perspectives et de questions liées à la nature, à l’histoire, à l’extraction des ressources, à la géopolitique, à l’ancrage social dans un territoire, à la communauté, l’exposition ouvre un espace prospectif qui documente et interroge notre époque contemporaine en crise.

C’est l’œuvre d’un cinéaste chercheur, bricoleur, peintre et poète qui donne à voir un « siècle finir dans le suivant », parcourant les grandes données de l’histoire humaine : la guerre, la loi, l’autre, l’ailleurs, le couple, l’impossible innocence, le langage, l’amour.

Extraits de films, photos, tableaux ou dessins : Godard compose une éblouissante syncope de séquences, dont le déferlement évoque la violence des flux de nos écrans contemporains, portée à un niveau d’incandescence rarement atteint.

Le regard d’une femme est-il différent de celui d’un homme ? Cette question est au cœur de la notion de « female gaze » (regard féminin) en opposition au « male gaze » (regard masculin). Vannina Micheli-Rechtman interroge cette question aujourd’hui avec les perspectives déployées par la psychanalyse et la philosophie, mais aussi grâce à l’œuvre de certain·e·s cinéastes.

Munnhola, obol ombra houp-là (« une série de performances ») de l’artiste et poète islandaise Ásta Fanney Sigurðardóttir est une collection de performances où les sons, les poèmes, la phonétique, les tons, les lettres, les mots et les scènes sans paroles forment ensemble un monde de perception surréaliste.

Dans cette œuvre, la voix est explorée en tant que moyen unique et sert de fil conducteur à un voyage de symboles, de lettres et de liens humains avec la nature, le langage, la technologie, les jeux et le divertissement.

The Covid pandemic has catalyzed experimental approaches to hybrid cultural programming and togetherness, mixing offline , offline and everything in-between. How can we translate the lessons learned into ways of dealing with post-pandemic urgencies? Can we use hybrid tactics in response to violent displacement, physical impairments, and the war in Ukraine?What kind of tactical media can exist within these (new) digital spaces, and which potential for resistance do they have?Data and information used as a tool for power might not be new, but some of the strategies being looked at in this conference—hopefully—are. 

During the first day of this conference, at SPUI25 and online, we’ll have panels, talks, and round table conversations about precisely these questions. Starting off with TikTok as a research subject, we dive into its nature and qualities which lends itself to a specific user attitude: both engaged and not, both within each other’s space, and not.Furthermore, we’ll hear some hands-on testimonies about streaming resistance and look at practices that both critique and use (mainstream) platforms as a method, or even a weapon.At the end of the day, we strive to find strategies for dealing with the locative media that is tracking us everywhere, as well as the techno-capitalist narratives underlining our technologies. How can anarchists—or simply users—tactically misuse online platforms?

On the second day, at Framer Framed and partly online, we invite you to join several workshops, expert sessions, and plenary talks.We’ll discuss the possibilities of event reporting through a whole new workflow, how online visitors can impact a physical space , whether or not living archives are even truly ‘alive’, how to squat the cloud, setting up quick and dirty live streams, and what to think of when looking at the (hybrid) future.

Das Ludwig Forum Aachen freut sich die jüngste, vom Ludwig Forum Aachen koproduzierte Arbeit Sister or He Buried the Body des international gefeierten Tänzers und Choreografen Trajal Harrell zu präsentieren. Die Performance ist Teil des Auftaktprogramms des diesjährigen schrit_tmacher Festivals in Aachen und markiert zugleich die Wiederaufnahme der Zusammenarbeit zwischen Ludwig Forum und schrit_tmacher Festival, die in Zukunft noch intensiviert werden soll.

Trajal Harrell erlangte internationale Anerkennung für eine Reihe von Arbeiten, in denen er die Tradition des Voguing – ein Stil des Modern Dance, entwickelt in den späten 1980er Jahren in der Harlemer Ballroom-Szene – mit frühem Postmodernen Tanz verbindet. In seinem neuesten Werk kombiniert er theoretische Ideen aus dem Voguing mit Gesten aus dem Butoh-Tanz, der in den späten 50er und frühen 60er Jahren in Japan entwickelt wurde. Sister or He Buried the Body stellt die Verbindungen zwischen zwei scheinbar weit entfernten Tanzkulturen her und ist so eine spekulative Neuordnung der Geschichte des zeitgenössischen Tanzes und seiner Komposition. Harrell untersucht dabei, wie Körper zu einem Gefäß für Erinnerung, Vergangenheit und historischen Figuren werden.

Trajal Harrell (*1973, Douglas, Georgia) gilt heute als einer der wichtigsten Choreografen seiner Generation. Seine Arbeiten wurden an zahlreichen amerikanischen und internationalen Spielorten gezeigt, darunter The Kitchen (NYC), Sao Paulo Biennale, Gwangju Biennale, Manchester International Festival, Festival d’Automne (Paris), Holland Festival (Amsterdam), Festival d’Avignon, Impulstanz (Wien), Tanz im August (Berlin), Performa Biennial und Lafayette Anticipations (Paris). Außerdem präsentierte er Performancearbeiten in Museen und Galerien wie MoMA, MoMA PS1, Museum Ludwig (Köln), Fondation Cartier (Paris), The New Museum (New York), Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), Serralves Museum (Porto), The Barbican Centre (London), Centre Pompidou (Paris, Metz), ICA Boston und Art Basel (Miami Beach).

Ludwig Forum Aachen is pleased to present Sister or He Buried the Body, the latest production by the internationally acclaimed dancer and choreographer Trajal Harrell. The performance is co-produced by Ludwig Forum Aachen and is part of the opening program of this year’s schrit_tmacher Festival in Aachen.

Trajal Harrell gained international recognition for his works that bring together the tradition of voguing – a modern dance style developed in the late 1980s from the Harlem ballroom scene – with early postmodern dance. In his latest work, the artist combines theoretical ideas from voguing with formal ideas deriving from Butoh dance, which was conceived in Japan during the late 50’s and early 60’s. This new work presents a speculative remapping of the history of contemporary dance and its composition, weaving the links between two seemingly distant dance cultures. By putting the body at the centre, Harrell explores the ways in which it becomes a receptacle of memory, the past and historical characters.

Saturday 4th March: Rosanna McLaughlin and Jen Calleja in Conversation at The Common Press, London

Hosted by Montez Press, authors Rosanna McLaughlin (Sinkhole: Three Crimes, Montez Press) and Jen Calleja (Vehicle, Prototype) will be in conversation about each of their novels.

Rosanna McLaughlin is an author and cultural critic. Double-Tracking, her debut collection of satirical essays and short fiction on the subject of middle-class duplicities, was published by Carcanet in 2019. An original proposal for the book was shortlisted for the Fitzcarraldo Essay Prize in 2016. Rosanna has written on subjects including Ariana Grande, the legacy of Section 28, and the weaponisation of Ana Mendieta. In 2017, she was writer-in-residence for the British Council Caribbean, researching the political fallout following Mendieta’s death. Her reviews and essays have been published in frieze magazine, ArtReview and the Guardian, among other places. She is co-editor of The White Review.

Jen Calleja is a writer, translator and publisher based in Hastings. Her latest books are Vehicle: a verse novel (Prototype) and the book-length poem Dust Sucker (Makina Books). She has translated nearly twenty works of German-language literature and was shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize 2019. She is also co-publisher at Praspar Press, which publishes Maltese literature in English and English translation.

February Interjection: EL BOSQUE CARDINAL / THE CARDINAL FOREST by Pansy Bbes

Pansy Bbes is a gardener, poet, singer, DJ, promoter and co-founder of Maricumbia, a queer Latinx club night based in London. They have published online with the 87press, foundation.fm, and Writerz and Scribez. They have performed at the Roundhouse, the Albany, the Young Vic, Richmix, the Tate Modern in London, Soup Kitchen in Manchester and Star and Shadow in Newcastle. They were a poet/singer in residence at Star and Shadow with Generator and Brighter Sound and are currently working on a self-sustaining food garden. Their work is a playground of horticulture, poetry, music, tarot, and astrology.

Friday 10th March: Anja Dietmann “nicorette” LP release at Bar Collo, Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof, Hamburg

The LP “nicorette” contains 10 performative songs, which deal with everyday situations in an uncanny light, like a cat with no swimsuit, a dog with no watch but a sharp view, or failed eye contact on a Skype call. As with Anja Dietmann’s motifs, the instruments on the recording often include articles of daily use and invert expectations. Saltshakers serve as percussion instruments; a midi Casio guitar substitutes the sound of a piano. The result is an auditory space in which—without much vocal technical interference—the narrative stands in the foreground.

“The performative as well as pictorial aspect of the work is also visible in the leaflet that comes with the LP, which shows the artist’s staging alongside text images. Anja Dietmann slips into roles and creates images that are characterised by a captivating accessibility. Her art is based on the idea of understanding language as something through which society not only communicates, but also constantly questions its self-image.”

François Génot rejoint LMNO

Nous sommes particulièrement heureux d’annoncer la collaboration nouvelle avec l’artiste plasticien François Génot (Strasbourg, 1981).

François Génot emprunte son attitude et l’élan de sa démarche à la résistance et à la prolifération du vivant. Il élabore un langage formel sensible et énergique rythmé par l’expérience des lieux. Son attention à la nature sauvage du quotidien qui habite nos espaces anthropisés, lui ouvre des portes sur les mondes humains, animaux, végétaux ou minéraux en présence, avec lesquels il tente de trouver de nouveaux modes de cohabitation et de partage. Les méthodes empiriques nées de ses systèmes d’attentions, des jeux de formes et de matières, des actions de terrain témoignent d’une démarche tournée vers la compréhension et la traduction d’autres formes de langages, des modes d’expression du vivant. Une exposition lui sera consacrée à la galerie du 10 mars jusqu’à 8 d’avril 2023: Among the Leaves. Nous vous attendons nombreux le jour du vernissage le 9 mars à partir de 18 heures.

François Génot vit et travaille en milieu rural dans le Grand Est de la France. Actif sur la scène internationale depuis 2005 il a réalisé de nombreuses résidences et expositions.
Il a notamment collaboré avec la Fondation François Schneider à Wattwiller, le CIAP – Île de Vassivière, Les Laboratoires d’Aubervilliers, Ergastule à Nancy, le CACLB à Montauban en Belgique, la Saarlandisches Kunstlerhaus à Sarrebruck en Allemagne, et avec Langage Plus à Alma au Québec. En 2020 et 2021 son travail entre dans les collections du Musée d’Art Moderne et Contemporain de Strasbourg et du FRAC Alsace. Membre fondateur et acteur de nombreux projets associatifs de territoire, il participe activement au développement de la culture en milieu rural. Il enseigne le dessin à l’Ecole Supérieure d’Art de Lorraine à Metz depuis 2016.

En 2023 il développera un projet d’envergure avec le FRAC Alsace autour des questions de féralité, il sera en résidence à la Ferme Asile à Sion dans le Valais Suisse et présentera deux expositions monographique à Engramme à Québec et à la HBK de Sarrebruck en Allemagne ; ainsi qu’une exposition collective avec l’association Fertile.

François Génot joins LMNO

We are thrilled to announce our latest collaboration with the plastic artist François Génot (Strasbourg, France,1981).

François Génot borrows his attitude and the impetus of his approach from the resistance and proliferation of the living. He creates a formal language, sensitive and energetic that harmonizes with the experience of places. His attention to the everyday wild nature we find in our anthropized spaces become an open door to the present human, animal, vegetal and mineral worlds. Through these worlds he tries to find new ways of cohabitation and sharing. These attention systems, the interactions between shapes and materials, and field actions promote the emergence empirical methods that witness an approach based on the understanding and translation of other forms of language: the modes of expression of the living. From 10th Mars until the 8th April 2023, LMNO will hold an exhibition of his latest works: Among the Leaves. Please join us on the opening day 9th Mars at 18h.

François Génot lives and works in the rural region of Grand Est in France. Since 2005, he has been active in the international artistic scene with residences and exhibitions.

He has worked in collaboration with institutions in France like the François Schneider Foundation in Wattwiller, the CIAPV (Centre International d’Art et du Paysage) in Vassivière Island, Les Laboratoires d’Aubervillier, Ergastule in Nancy; in Belgium with the CACLB (Centre d’Art Contemporain du Luxembourg belge) in Montauban; in Germany with the Saarlandisches Kunstlerhaus in Sarrebruck, and with Langage Plus in Alma, Québecq. Since 2016, he works as a teacher of drawing in the Ecole Supérieure d’Art in Lorrain, Metz.

In 2023, he will develop a major project with FRAC Alsace about ferality; he will start a residence in the Ferme Asile, in Syon (Swiss Canton of Valais), and will also present two monographic exhibitions in Engramme, Québec and HBK, Sarrebruck; as well as a collective exhibition with the Fertile association.

De tentoonstelling “Als je me echt zou kennen…” is één van de vele facetten van het Tiener Curatoren-programma in 2023. Ayman, Beyda, Donovan, Hajar, Oumaima, Menna, Safae en Yahya hebben een tentoonstelling gemaakt vanuit de wens om ruimte te creëren voor verhalen, jeugdherinneringen en vragen die nog niet voldoende gehoord worden in Nederland. “Als je me echt zou kennen…” geeft gehoor aan de vooroordelen die zij, de Tiener Curatoren in Amsterdam, dagelijks ervaren. 

Dit zijn momenten waarop ze zich anders voelen, niet-Nederlands, ondanks dat ze in Nederland geboren zijn. Hoe komt het, dat er niet aan hen gevraagd wordt om hun verhaal te vertellen, maar dat het verhaal vaak op basis van aannames wordt ingevuld? Zij willen deze situatie doorbreken en het gesprek aangaan. Met deze tentoonstelling nodigen zij de bezoekers dan ook uit om hun ervaringen te delen, om zo tot een nieuw begrip te komen rondom onderlinge vooroordelen. 

“Als je me echt zou kennen…” is het resultaat van een samenwerking als groep, waardoor tegelijkertijd individuele overeenkomsten en verschillen naar voren konden komen. Deze individualiteit en tegelijkertijd collectiviteit willen ze delen door ons aan te moedigen echt naar elkaars verhalen te luisteren. “Als je me echt zou kennen…” is een verzameling aan herinneringen over het leven van tieners in Amsterdam.

Gedurende het hele proces hebben David Smeulders, curator educatie van de Appel, en Fouad Lakbir, verhalenverteller en mede-initiatiefnemer van MAQAM, met de jonge curatoren samengewerkt en hen geholpen om richting te geven aan hun interesses in relatie tot het maken van tentoonstellingen. De Tiener Curatoren hebben drie kunstenaars geselecteerd om mee samen te werken. Tijdens de tentoonstelling zal hun werk in de Appel te zien zijn. De geselecteerde kunstenaars zijn Suat Öğüt, Ain en Ghita Skali. Meer informatie over de Tiener Curatoren en de deelnemende kunstenaars is te vinden via de website van de Appel.

Op 3 maart om 17:00 opent de tentoonstelling van de Tiener Curatoren. Je bent van harte welkom om hierbij aanwezig te zijn, vooraf opgeven is niet nodig.

Beautiful Soup

Openingssymposium: 3 maart van 14:00 tot 16:00
De Appel is trots Beautiful Soup te hosten. Dit is een presentatie van zeven curatoriële praktijken. Het is gebaseerd op het thema van inclusie-tactieken voor curatoren, en adresseert vijf sleutelbegrippen: empowerment, ondersteuning, coöperaties, openheid en eerlijkheid.

De deelnemende curatoren zijn: Jeanette Bisschops, CHANG Eunha, Sofía Dourron, Manique Hendricks, MOK Honggyun, Ong Jo-Lene, en YUN Minhwa. Het project wordt ondersteund vanuit het Nederlands-Koreaanse International Arts Joint Fund, ter viering van 60 jaar diplomatieke betrekkingen tussen beide landen. Meer informatie over de deelnemende kunstenaars en schrijvers is te vinden via de website van de Appel en via beautifulsoup.org. 

Op 3 maart om 14:00 opent de tentoonstelling met een symposium. Iedereen is van harte uitgenodigd om hierbij aanwezig te zijn, vooraf opgeven is niet nodig. Het tijdsschema wordt spoedig gepubliceerd op de website van de Appel.

Volgende week dinsdag 28 februari geeft politicoloog en journalist Mounir Samuel de lezing Hier moeten we het echt over hebben, aan de hand van zijn zojuist verschenen boek Je mag ook niets meer zeggen. Een nieuwe taal voor een nieuwe tijd. Hoe kunnen we, in een snel veranderende wereld, ervoor zorgen dat onze taal mee verandert? Hoe maken we de taal inclusiever, zodat meer groepen zich gehoord en gezien voelen?

Naar aanleiding van deze en nog meer vragen zal het gesprek worden verbonden aan de tentoonstelling Saamhorigheid van Pope.L. Het Nederlandse culturele archief dat centraal staat in dit videowerk, opgebouwd uit machtsstructuren, stereotyperingen en relaties van ongelijkheid, drukt zich op allerlei manieren uit in ons dagelijkse taalgebruik – en wellicht dat daar ook het aanknopingspunt gevonden kan worden voor zowel verzet als een nieuw begin.

Curator Orlando Maaike Gouwenberg gaat met hem in gesprek om de vragen rond onze taal te koppelen aan de tentoonstelling. Im Verlauf der letzten zwanzig Jahre hat die in Berlin und New York lebende Malerin Kerstin Brätsch eine unverwechselbare Arbeitsweise entwickelt, mit der sie das Medium Malerei über den Einbezug von Performances, künstlerischen Aktionen und Installationen stetig erweitert und immer wieder aufs Neue befragt und interpretiert. Neben der regelmäßigen Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Künstler*innen wie Adele Röder (DAS INSTITUT), Debo Eilers (KAYA) oder Ei & Tomoo Arakawa (UNITED BROTHERS) greift sie zusätzlich auch auf traditionelle, zum Teil in Vergessenheit geratene kunsthandwerkliche Verfahren zurück, um die metaphysischen und animistischen Qualitäten von Malerei auf humorvolle Weise freizulegen.

Para Psychics, ihre jüngste Serie, setzt diese Auseinandersetzung fort, wenn auch in abgewandelter Form. Während des ersten Corona Lockdowns in New York überführte Brätsch ihre raumgreifende und kollaborative Arbeitsweise in einen nach innen gerichteten Prozess des täglichen Zeichnens. Sie fertigte im Zeitraum von Januar 2020 bis März 2022 einhundert Mandala-ähnliche Zeichnungen an; in einer Zeit, in der sie sich intensiv mit Mystik, Tarot, Pflanzenmedizin und Gottheiten wie der sumerischen Himmelsgöttin Inanna beschäftigte. Die Sein: Para Psychics im Ludwig Forum Aachen präsentiert erstmals alle hundert Zeichnungen dieser Serie zusammen in einer ortsspezifischen Installation aus eingefärbten, den Lichteinfall manipulierenden Fensterscheiben und transparenten Raumstrukturen. Ihre Auseinandersetzung von Malerei im Verhältnis zum Körper, sei es zum sozialen, physischen oder psychischen, findet in den Zeichnungen als Reise in den mentalen Körper seine Fortschreibung. Verteilt über die Museumswände und Metallstrukturen erinnern die Zeichnungen an ausgelegte Weissagungen, die die Besucher*innen deuten und durchwandern können.

Familienbande: Großeltern-Enkel-Programm
Workshop für Großeltern und Kinder von 6 bis 10 Jahren
Gemeinsam Zeit verbringen und kreativ sein: An jedem vierten Sonntag im Monat erkunden Großeltern und Enkelkinder das Ludwig Forum, um anschließend in der Werkstatt gemeinsam ein Kunstwerk zu erschaffen. Malen, Zeichnen, mit Ton oder anderen Materialien werken – ein unvergessliches Erlebnis.

DIY – Demo-Workshops in der Kunstwerkstatt
An jedem dritten Wochenende im Monat geben Künstler*innen, Designer*innen und Kunsthistoriker*innen Einblicke in fachspezifische kreative Techniken. In 2-stündigen Demo-Workshops wird auf spezielle Werkstoffe und kreative Methoden eingegangen. Techniken und deren Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten werden demonstriert und können in kleinem Umfang ausprobiert werden. Mit diesem Angebot stellt das Ludwig Forum die vielseitigen Möglichkeiten in Museum und Kunstwerkstatt vor und gibt den Gästen Inspirationen für eigene Projekte mit auf den Weg.

DEMO-Notan-Kontrastbilder

„Notan“ ist Japanisch und bedeutet „dunkel-hell“. Mit den Techniken Scherenschnitt und Collage wird der Kontrast zwischen Schwarz und Weiß oder Farbe herausgearbeitet. Dabei ist die Hauptregel des Notan-Prinzips: Es darf nichts weggenommen und nichts hinzugefügt werden.

Over the past twenty years, Berlin and New York based painter Kerstin Brätsch has developed a distinctive way of working with which she continually expands the medium of painting, redefining and interpreting it time and again by including performances, artistic interventions, and installations. Besides her regular collaboration with other artists such as Adele Röder (DAS INSTITUT), Debo Eilers (KAYA) and Ei & Tomoo Arakawa (UNITED BROTHERS), she also draws on traditional artisanal techniques, some of which have been forgotten, in order to reveal painting’s metaphysical and animistic qualities in a humorous manner.

Para Psychics, her most recent series, continues this exploration, albeit in a modified form. During the first Corona lockdown in New York, Brätsch transposed her largescale and collaborative practice into an inwardlooking process of drawing on a daily basis. In the period between January 2020 and March 2022, she created one hundred Mandalalike drawings in a time in which she intensively pursued mysticism, tarot, plant medicine and deities like the Sumerian sky goddess Inanna. Die Sein: Para Psychics at the Ludwig Forum Aachen presents all one hundred drawings from this series for the first time in a sitespecific installation of transparent spatial structures juxtaposed against tinted window panes which manipulate the sunlight, creating a unique atmosphere for the viewer. Her exploration of painting in relation to the body, be it the social, physical or psychic, is continued in the drawings as a journey into the mental body. Distributed across the museum walls and metal structures, the drawings evoke abstracted fortunetelling, laid out in a way that visitors can interpret and wander through them.

Hierbij nodigen we u van harte uit voor de opening van de solo tentoonstelling It’s a world and not the world met recente werken van Tom Callemin.
Wij verheugen ons op uw komst. 

Twee jaar lang fotografeerde Tom Callemin iedere maand dezelfde vrouw, steeds in dezelfde pose en dezelfde setting. Portrait (24 months) bestaat uit twaalf foto’s uit die serie en het is een van de werken in de tentoonstelling It’s a world and not the world.* Keer op keer zien we haar in de lens kijken terwijl de wind met haar haren speelt. En toch lijkt er in elk beeld iets te verschuiven tot er iets wezenlijk anders naar de voorgrond treedt. De tentoonstelling laat zien dat Callemin met ‘de analoge trukendoos van de fotografie’, zoals hij het zelf formuleert, nieuwe werelden creëert. In zijn studio bouwt hij hele landschappen, als een tweede werkelijkheid parallel aan onze ‘vertrouwde’ realiteit. Wat gebeurt er als een ‘lichaam’, of dat nu het lichaam van een mens, een dier of een plant is, in een fictieve setting voor het voetlicht wordt gebracht?

Alle werken in de tentoonstelling roepen de vraag op waar we naar kijken, naar wat, naar wie? Identiteit en perceptie zijn de thema’s waar Callemin zich met zijn fictieve illusies op richt. Ons begrip persoon, dat we verbinden met het idee van identiteit, is ontleend aan het Latijnse woord ‘persona’. In de oudheid hadden theaters vaak zulke forse afmetingen dat het publiek de gezichtsuitdrukkingen van de toneelspelers niet kon waarnemen. Om hun mimiek overdrachtelijk te maken droegen de acteurs een masker, een ‘persona’. Dat masker zorgde ervoor dat toeschouwers meteen wisten welke figuur ze voor zich hadden. De Zwitserse psychiater Carl Gustav Jung (1875-1961) zag de persona als een compromis tussen het individu en de gemeenschap. De persona was een gesublimeerd beeld van onszelf dat ons beschermt tegen de kwetsbaarheid die ontstaat als we onszelf blootgeven. We projecteren een beeld van onszelf op de ander en de persona, wat wij nu imago noemen, is daarmee de basis van het sociale verkeer.

In deze tijd waarin fotografische beelden zich anders voordoen dan ze zijn, waarin elk gezicht een filter krijgt, onderzoekt Tom Callemin het idee van het lichaam en zijn identiteit. Niet door zelf zijn toevlucht te zoeken tot digitale manipulatie maar door met analoge technieken geënsceneerde beelden te maken in de studio. In zijn artificiële landschappen plaatst Callemin mensen, dieren, objecten en planten. Ze belichamen ‘personages’ in beelden die de perceptie van de toeschouwer uitdagen. Zo bestaat de reeks Traps uit fictieve winterlandschappen. Onder een tapijt van sneeuw gaan onzichtbare vallen schuil zoals stropers die gebruiken voor bijvoorbeeld konijnen. Hier en daar steekt alleen een koord uit de sneeuw, of hangt een gecamoufleerde steen boven de grond. De landschappen met de strikken werden opgebouwd met materiaal dat in films gebruikt wordt om sneeuw te maken. Daarnaast zette Callemin Front Screen Projection in, een in onbruik geraakte special effect techniek waarbij een deel van de achtergrond geprojecteerd wordt. De dierenvalletjes in de Traps spelen een visueel spel met de perceptie.

Er is een spannende link tussen de sets van Callemin en het theater dat de stroper opbouwt om dieren te misleiden. In die zin wordt fictie ook een gevaar waar de beschouwer zelf in ‘verstrikt’ kan raken. Dat gebeurt ook bij Starling (tonic immobility), 2022: in close up zien we het beeld van een jonge spreeuw, liggend op zijn rug, met zijn pootjes stijf omhoog. Anders dan in de Traps, waar het fictieve landschappen betreft, roept hier de registratie van de werkelijkheid vragen op bij onze perceptie. De vogel acteert zijn eigen dood. Het is een vorm van fictie die als overlevingsstrategie wordt ingezet: aanvallers worden doeltreffend om de tuin geleid, net als de beschouwer.

Waar kijken we naar? Wat ligt er verborgen in het beeld? Waar schuurt het beeld, waar klopt het niet? Kijken we, zoals in Portrait (24 months), naar iemand die een rol aanneemt voor een camera of kijken we naar de werkelijke persoon zoals hij of zij is? Tom Callemin heeft de ‘persoonsverwisseling’ tot een belangrijk thema in zijn werk gemaakt. Hij bevraagt onze gewoontes van psychologische én antropocentrische projectie. Wanneer is een beeld een beeld, wanneer gaat het ‘leven’, wanneer ontstaat er wederkerigheid tussen beeld en beschouwer? De tentoonstelling is in feite een ode aan de verbeelding en de reflectie: want zoals alle werken laten zien, transformeren de beelden onder onze blik. Maar zijn deze beelden zelf op hun beurt niet ook weer fictie? De wijze waarop Callemin het idee van eeuwige transformatie en de spanning tussen realiteit en fictie verbeeldt maakt duidelijk dat De Werkelijkheid niet bestaat. It’s a world and not the world!

Henrike Naumann komponiert Installationen, die zugleich historische Räume und Ausstellungsräume sind. Ihre größte Inspiration dabei ist ihre eigene Lebensgeschichte. Sie wurde in der DDR geboren und erlebte die Veränderungen ihres Heimatlandes aktiv mit und spürt immer der Frage nach, wie die Gestaltung von Räumen und Objekten unbewusst auf uns wirkt. Möbel, mit denen wir unsere Innenräume ausstatten und die eine vermeintliche Neutralität aufweisen, stellt Neumann infrage, fokussiert sich auf deren ideologische Botschaften und baut eine Brücke zwischen Historie, Innenarchitektur und dem kollektiven Unterbewussten.

Reich, BRD und rechter Realität der Gegenwart sowie als prägendes Element der eigenen Familiengeschichte der Künstlerin. Hierzu nahm sie die Biografie ihres Großvaters, eines Alt-Nazis, als Ausgangspunkt einer künstlerischen Recherche über drei Generationen.

Tom Bogaert beschäftigt sich mit seiner Jugendgeschichte als Mitglied eines Flaggenwerfervereins in Brügge – und der Frage, wie es für ihn als Jugendlicher möglich war, derart unreflektiert die flämische Löwenflagge zu werfen. Seine Sammlung von Fotos, Videos und Archivmaterial aus dieser Zeit wird erstmalig als Teil einer neuen Installation im IKOB ausgestellt.

Previous chapters of this piece have been presented as INSTRUCTIONS (#0.a Theater Space) at CCHA, Hasselt, BE and INSTRUCTIONS (#0.b RED COMFORT) at De Studio, Antwerp, BE.

fluent is pleased to present INSTRUCTIONS, a newly commissioned performance by Margaux Schwarz in which, departing from the suggestive architecture of the space, she reflects upon issues of transparency, intimacy and power.
INSTRUCTIONS is a performance where a woman, equipped with a headset and earphones, creates a perimetral movement while repeating a pre-recorded voice flowing in her ears. While walking, she addresses a series of interactions with different people who are not presented to us, akin to a kind of training, which is in turns condescending, mothering or authoritarian when she’s not herself dominated. These instructions are all given in the name of an unspecified «We».

Can the repetition of language, intensity and tone reveal invisibilized contracts between subjects, economies and  social roles? Through this question, Schwarz interrogates whether is it possible to activate new interactions between a collective form of intimacy and social power–dynamics.

Margaux Schwarz is a French artist and researcher based in Brussels. Her work takes many forms, such as conversational performances, sound pieces, short stories, scripts or events. Through them, she examines the prominent role of dramaturgy, performativity and story-telling in our society. Her doctoral research (UHasselt / PXL-MAD School of Arts) is informed by fields such as digital anthropology and the sociology of work. It explores power structures in language and communication, with a specific focus on performative strategies used in socio–professional interactions.
