Love Thy Network: Friendship, Gossip, and Public Discourse — Available Now!

With all the connections we’ve made at Montez Press Radio over the years, we know good friends are impossible to quantify and just as hard to define. For all the day-ones, ride-or-dies, and chosen families, we also have fair weather friends, friends with benefits, and friends who are just there for the free beer after the show. In the informal economy of the culture industry, friendship becomes a site of transaction and our world can sometimes feel like chess without a chessboard. And that’s okay. It might sound cynical to suggest that good friendships often hinge on exchange, but we know that wisdom can be traded for opportunity, a shoulder to cry on for a dinner to laugh over, a wink for something best obtained in the bathroom. So long as no one is overly preoccupied with accounting, exchange is foundational to our most valued friendships.

Whether your friend has a responsibility to come to your next show is a question as timeless as whether art has the social responsibility to do anything but be good art. In the late 20th century, when art collapsed into life and its priorities shifted away from the unique object, culture adopted the position that contemporary art is a place of discourse, a site where the exchange of ideas turns the world as it is into a world of possibilities. But today, as we confront political and social crises online and off, art can feel trapped between self-indulgent abstraction and moralizing didacticism. The goal of art and its discourses shouldn’t be to prove, or even come to agreements, but to stir new ways of thinking, to encourage us to be curious and perpetually in conversation.

As a platform established for dialogue about art (and sharing playlists with crushes), Montez Press Radio believes that the nuances of our friendships are vital to consider if we are to achieve a shared and polyvocal future (that includes good art). Our friends are our livelihoods and our support systems, our inspiration and encouragement, our muses and our competitors. So for MPR’s first Series installment—a new strand of curated radio broadcasts—we’ve invited friends, new and old, to think through the intimate and professional, the exclusive and cooperative, the transactional and parasocial, the facts and the tea, to consider what it means to belong: to a scene, to a network, to a community, to a public.

Tot juli 2025 zal hij bij Marres werken aan een kroniek over Mexico. Zijn storytelling biedt bezoekers een hypergedetailleerde weergave van zijn stad Nezahualcóyotl, een voorstad van Mexico City. Beelden van geïmproviseerde architectuur, zoenende koppeltjes, bendegeweld, brandende auto’s, soapsterren, mariachi-bands en drag queens worden aanschouwd door gigantische pre-Columbiaanse mythologische figuren. Deze figuren lijken de balans van grove onrechtvaardigheid en wijdverbreide corruptie te herstellen in wat Galván omschrijft als een levendige droom van de Mexicaanse samenleving. 

Vultures & Fireflies biedt een unieke kans om het work-in-progress te volgen in april, mei en juni. De kroniek van Mexico zal steeds meer vorm krijgen met elk nieuw toegevoegd werk en ingerichte kamer. Deel 2: Vuurvliegjes zal in juni 2025 helemaal af zijn, dat wordt gevierd met een tweede opening op 28 juni 2025. De tentoonstelling is te zien t/m 31 augustus 2025. 
 

Marres viert haar 25-jarig jubileum met een reeks speciale evenementen, die elke 25e van de maand plaatsvinden. Op 25 maart organiseerden Marres en Limestone Books een verhalenavond rond de tentoonstelling Vultures & Fireflies van Alejandro Galván.

Galváns werk verzet zich tegen de onzichtbaarheid van zijn gemeenschap en laat zien dat hun verhaal verteld moet worden. Met dit in gedachten, werd er geluisterd naar de verhalen van Iris de Leeuw, Jeff van Reen, Max Yust, Chang Chih Chung, Halar Soomro en Adeola Elinice Adeyemi, rond een intiem kampvuur in de stadstuin van Marres.

Vier met ons het volgende evenement in het kader van ons 25-jarig bestaan. Op 25 april nodigen we graag onze buren uit voor een gezellige avond bij Marres. Met rondleidingen door ons team, activiteiten voor de kleintjes en een fris Marres biertje in onze stadstuin. Ook als je niet in de buurt woont, ben je van harte welkom om te proosten op onze verjaardag.

Geïnspireerd door de kunstenaar Alejandro Galván, die zijn woonplaats Nezahualcóyotl vastlegt in zijn kunst, hebben de leerlingen nagedacht over wat ‘thuis’ voor hen betekent.

Iedere schoolgroep die tijdens Vultures & Fireflies naar Marres komt, werkt mee aan deze ruimte. Zo groeien deze muren met elke nieuwe groep uit tot een dynamisch kunstwerk vol persoonlijke perspectieven. Het resultaat is een verzameling persoonlijke en betekenisvolle kunstwerken die samen een mozaïek vormen van diverse achtergronden en verhalen.

We kregen o.a. bezoek van Kindcentrum Dynamiek, Broeklandcollege, Maastricht Institute of Arts, @ease, Porta Mosana, de Nieuwste Pabo en het Udens College.
