Liebe Freund:innen des IKOB,

bewegte Tage liegen hinter uns und ein neues Jahr liegt vor uns. 

Auch 2024 werden wir im IKOB ein spannendes Programm für Sie auf die Beine stellen.

Am 12. Januar geht es los mit einem ganz besonderen Projekt: Einem Hybrid aus Führung und Konzert anlässlich der aktuellen Ausstellung HYPERBILD von Andrea Radermacher-Mennicken und Tanja Mosblech.

Parallel läuft bis zum 10. März die Ausstellung GARTEN SPRENGEN der Künstlerin Veronika Eberhart.

HYPERKUNST
ein hybrides Konzert von KL-EX mit Führung

Die Ausstellung HYPERBILD wird durch musikalische Einlagen von KL-EX – Klangexperimente um die Dimension der Musik erweitert, begleitet von einer Führung mit Frank-Thorsten Moll, Direktor des IKOB. Vermittlung und Musik treten mit den jeweiligen Kunstwerken in Dialog und schlagen eine Brücke zu den Klängen des Kammerkonzerts welches im Anschluss an die Führung von KL-EX gestaltet wird. Die Hybridführung dauert ungefähr 40 Minuten und wird mit einem ebensolangen Konzert abgerundet.

Gregor Pankert: Manuelle Lautstärkeautomationen, für DJ-Set – Violine – live electronics

Paul Pankert: Partita Ritardata, für Violine und live electronics

HYPERBILD ist das Ergebnis einer dreijährigen künstlerischen Zusammenarbeit zwischen Tanja Mosblech (*1970, Köln, DE) und Andrea Radermacher-Mennicken (*1964, Eupen, BE) von 2020 bis 2023 als Künstlerinnen Ostbelgiens. Die Ausstellung basiert auf dem gegenseitigen Austausch von Wörtern, Ideen und Materialien und hinterfragt, wie wir im digitalen Zeitalter Verbindungen zwischen Bildern herstellen. Sie zeigt dazu eine Vielzahl von Medien, darunter Gemälde, Skulpturen sowie Installationen.

Veronika Eberhart (*1982, Bad Radkersburg, AT) präsentiert ihren neuesten Film Garten sprengen (2022) zusammen mit einer neuen Reihe von skulpturalen und fotografischen Arbeiten, die als Ausgangspunkt die Biografie des Komponisten Hanns Eislers (1898 – 1962) haben. Eberharts Suche nach vergrabenen Meinungsebenen treibt ihre Untersuchung einer Gesellschaftshistorie anhand der Massenwirkung von Film und Musik an, indem sie verschiedene Zeitlichkeiten vermischt. Die Ausstellung wurde in Zusammenarbeit mit Phileas – The Austrian Office for Contemporary Art produziert und von dem Kulturministerium Österreich und dem Österreichischen Kulturforum Brüssel unterstützt.

Über die Feiertage sowie zwischen den Jahren laden wir Sie ein, unsere aktuellen Ausstellungen Monument to My Paper Body von Ulrike Müller sowie Ooooooooo-pus von Katalin Ladik zu besuchen. Die aktuellen Öffnungszeiten über die Weihnachtsfeiertage finden Sie nachstehend.

Darüber hinaus möchten wir Sie schon jetzt auf eine neue Veranstaltungsreihe im Ludwig Forum Aachen aufmerksam machen, das Forum Literatur. Für die Auftaktveranstaltung der Reihe ist die österreichische Autorin Marlene Streeruwitz eingeladen, am Donnerstag, den 25.01.2024 um 19 Uhr gemeinsam mit der Schauspielerin Melanie Kretschmann für eine Lesung nach Aachen zu kommen. Am Freitag, den 26.01.2024 um 18 Uhr hält die Autorin zudem einen Workshop für Interessierte jeden Alters zum Thema Grundrechte lesen.

Aktuelle Ausstellungen im Ludwig Forum Aachen

Katalin Ladik Ooooooooo-pus
07.10.2023–10.03.2024

Das Ludwig Forum Aachen freut sich mit Ooooooooo-pus die erste internationale Überblicksausstellung von Katalin Ladik (geb. 1942 in Novi Sad, lebt in Budapest) zu präsentieren. Durch ihre radikale Herangehensweise an Poesie, Sound und Performance etablierte sich Ladik als Schlüsselfigur der künstlerischen Avantgarden im ehemaligen Jugoslawien. Ausgehend von ihrem anhaltenden Interesse an Sprache und Körperlichkeit, gibt die Ausstellung erstmals einen Überblick ihrer Arbeiten aus den späten 1960er Jahren bis heute. Die vertonten Partituren ihrer visuellen und phonischen Poesien in Form von Collagen, Textilarbeiten, Fotografien und Objekten öffnen im Zusammenspiel mit anderen Soundkompositionen eine vielschichtige Klanglandschaft, die von der außergewöhnlichen Bandbreite der Stimme Ladiks getragen wird. Kuratiert von Fanny Hauser und Hendrik Folkerts. Die Ausstellung ist organisiert in Kooperation mit dem Haus der Kunst München und dem Moderna Museet, Stockholm.

Ulrike Müller Monument to My Paper Body
09.12.2023 – 09.06.2024, Wandbild bis 09.12.2025

Für das Ausstellungsprojekt Monument to My Paper Body hat die in New York lebende Ulrike Müller eine ortsspezifische Wandmalerei auf den zwei vierzehn Meter hohen, gegenüberliegenden Wänden im Ludwig Forum Aachen konzipiert. Begleitet wird die Intervention von Collagen, Zeichnungen, Emaille-Bildern, Monotypien, und Textilien der Künstlerin, die im Dialog mit ausgewählten Arbeiten aus den am Ludwig Forum Aachen befindlichen Sammlungen präsentiert werden. Mit Carla Accardi, Laurie Anderson, Belkis Ayón, Lygia Clark, Nancy Graves, Alex Hay, Alfred Jensen, Bertram Jesdinsky, Jasper Johns, Imi Knoebel, Christopher Knowles, Svetlana Kopystiansky, Sol LeWitt, Lee Lozano, Rune Mields, Klaus Paier, Margit Palme, Judy Pfaff, Robert Rauschenberg, Dorothea Rockburne, Miriam Schapiro, Peter Young und Fahr El-Nissa Zeid.

Die Ausstellung greift die von Harald Kunde initiierte Double Wall Reihe (2004-2008) auf, bei der Künstler*innen im wechselnden Turnus eingeladen waren, die beiden monumentalen Wände des Museums künstlerisch zu aktivieren. Mit der Präsentation von Ulrike Müller wird die Reihe in erweiterter Form erneut zum festen Bestandteil des Ausstellungsprogramms am Ludwig Forum Aachen. Kuratiert von Eva Birkenstock.

“Die Lesung aus Die Schmerzmacherin. soll den Nachweis erbringen, dass Literatur das Medium ist, das die Komplexität unserer Leben in der Welt beinhalten kann. So können die Leser*innen Erfahrungen sammeln, die sie aber nicht haben müssen und diese erlesenen Erfahrungen wieder gegen die eigenen halten können. Die Lesung des zweiten Dialogs von Mutter und Tochter [aus dem Roman Tage im Mai.] wiederum wird zeigen, wie schwierig es ist, Liebe zu sprechen und wie wir einander mehr durch Auslassungen unsere Gefühle bekanntgeben. Dieser Dialog zeigt aber auch, wie Lieben dann doch gelingen kann, wie wir aber angehalten sind, diese Formen des Liebens minder zu achten.” (Marlene Streeruwitz)

Katalin Ladik Ooooooooo-pus
Oct 6, 2023 – March 10, 2024

The Ludwig Forum Aachen is pleased to present Ooooooooo-pus, the first survey exhibition of Katalin Ladik (b. 1942 in Novi Sad, lives in Budapest). Her radical approach to poetry, sound, and performance established her as a key figure in the artistic avant-gardes of former Yugoslavia. Drawing on her career-spanning interest in language and corporeality, the exhibition provides for the first time a comprehensive overview of Ladik’s work from the late 1960s to the present. The scores of her visual and phonic poems set to music manifest themselves in the exhibition space as collages, textile works, photographs and objects and, together with selected sound compositions, open up a soundscape carried by the extraordinary range of the artist’s voice. Curated by Fanny Hauser and Hendrik Folkerts. The exhibition is co-organized in cooperation with Haus der Kunst München and Moderna Museet, Stockholm.

For the exhibition project Monument to My Paper Body, New York-based Ulrike Müller has conceived a site-specific mural on the two facing, fourteen-meter-high walls in the Ludwig Forum Aachen. This intervention is accompanied by collages, drawings, enamel paintings, monotypes, and textiles by the artist, which are presented in dialog with selected works from the collections at the Ludwig Forum Aachen. With Carla Accardi, Laurie Anderson, Belkis Ayón, Lygia Clark, Nancy Graves, Alex Hay, Alfred Jensen, Bertram Jesdinsky, Jasper Johns, Imi Knoebel, Christopher Knowles, Svetlana Kopystiansky, Sol LeWitt, Lee Lozano, Rune Mields, Klaus Paier, Margit Palme, Judy Pfaff, Robert Rauschenberg, Dorothea Rockburne, Miriam Schapiro, Peter Young, Fahr El-Nissa Zeid.

The exhibition picks up on the Double Wall series (2004-2008) initiated by Harald Kunde, in which artists were invited to artistically activate the two monumental walls of the museum on a rotating basis. Ulrike Müller’s presentation marks the return of the series, in an expanded form, as a fixture in the museum’s exhibition program. Monument to My Paper Body will be accompanied by a program of events and the production of a publication. Curated by Eva Birkenstock.

“The reading from Die Schmerzmacherin. is intended to verify that literature is the medium that can encompass the complexity of our lives in the world. By reading, readers can gather experiences which they need not experience themselves, and can hold these select experiences up against their own. The reading of the second dialogue between the mother and daughter [from Tage im Mai.], in turn, will show how difficult it is to speak about love, and how we disclose our feelings to each other more by leaving things out. This dialogue also shows, however, how loving can succeed, but how we are urged to pay less heed to these forms of loving.” (Marlene Streeruwitz)

Beste wensen voor 2024

Vanwege het Herbert Foundation team!
 

Herbert Foundation blikt met voldoening terug op voorbije jaar. In oktober openden de tentoonstellingen Hanne Darboven – Welttheater, Gilbert & George – Pink Elephants en Sol LeWitt – Grids. Deze focuspresentaties luiden een nieuw hoofdstuk in binnen het tentoonstellingeprogramma waarbij een reeks kunstenaars uit de verzameling van Annick en Anton Herbert in de diepte worden belicht. Niet alleen kunstwerken, maar ook een ruime selectie archiefmateriaal geven inzicht in het oeuvre van de kunstenaars en onderlijnen hoe actueel de thematieken binnen hun werk zijn.
 

Het voorjaar van 2024 zal in teken staan van Marcel Broodthaers, een sleutelkunstenaar binnen de verzameling Herbert. Naar aanleiding van zijn 100ste verjaardag wijdt Herbert Foundation vanaf mei een tentoonstelling aan deze bijzondere kunstenaar, in samenwerking met Joris D’hooghe.

Het najaar van 2024 belicht het werk van Jan Vercruysse en Rodney Graham. De tentoonstelling, die tot stand komt in samenwerking met Nikolaas Verstraeten, zal worden vergezeld van een reeks verdiepende evenementen.

De huidige tentoonstellingen kunnen nog tot de zomer van 2024 worden bezocht.

Het nieuwe jaar zal bovendien bijzonder worden ingezet. In samenwerking met de Hanne Darboven Stichting en harpist Stef Van Vynckt zal het stuk Harp Solo – Opus 45 van Darboven voor het eerst in Europa live worden opgevoerd.

Marres ‘s avonds open!

Deze vrijdag, 15 december, organiseert Marres een speciale date night. Bezoek de hartverwarmende tentoonstelling Goodbye to Love met een date, glühwein en misschien een kus onder de mistletoe? Tussen 17:00 en 21:00u is elk 2e kaartje gratis. Of je nu een internationale, platonische of queer date meeneemt: iedereen is welkom voor een winters avondje uit.

Marres, Huis voor Hedendaagse Cultuur is open op 2e kerstdag van 12:00 tot 17:00u. Marres Kitchen is geopend tussen 12:00-17:00u en 18:00-23:00u.

Marres, VIA ZUID, de Brakke Grond, Dansateliers en FASHIONCLASH presenteren het performance festival Rooms.

Op 27 & 28 januari 2024, vullen jonge makers en gevestigde talenten de kamers van Marres met performance, theater, beeldende kunst, dans, mode en muziek. Een weekend waarin fragiele jurken kleurrijk glas in lood tot leven brengen, waar de lichamen van dirigenten in levende partituren veranderen, manuscripten worden gedicteerd en een schoenenboer je meeneemt in absurdistische machtsverhoudingen.

Open Call

Tijdens Rooms krijgen zes mensen de kans om een eigen handschreven boek te maken onder leiding van kunstenaar David Maroto. In een participatieve performance zal hij het originele, Engelstalige manuscript van zijn werk Not All of Me Will Die dicteren aan een groep deelnemers die het elk met de hand zullen noteren. Zo wordt de ‘orale novelle,’ die reflecteert op het geheugen, schrijven en het verlangen naar nageslacht, verspreid in unieke handschreven kopieën.

De performance zal plaatsvinden op zaterdag 27 januari van 10:00 tot 15:00u bij Marres.

De Limburg Biënnale komt eraan!

In de zomer van 2024 organiseren Marres in Maastricht en Odapark in Venray de derde editie van de Limburg Biënnale: een veelzijdige groepstentoonstelling die alle soorten kunstenaars, professionals, amateurs en hobbyisten bij elkaar brengt. De feestelijke opening zal plaatsvinden op 29 juni 2024.

Save the date voor de Open Call: van 19 februari t/m 10 maart 2024 kunnen geïnteresseerden, jong en oud, gevestigd en onbekend, van individu tot collectief, zich met een maximum van drie kunstwerken inschrijven. Dit mag elk type kunstwerk zijn: schilderij, video, sculptuur, audio, performance etc. De jury van 19 professionele kunstenaars beoordeelt de inzendingen en selecteert de deelnemende kunstenaars, zonder te weten wie de maker is. Vervolgens richten de juryleden met hun selectie een ruimte in bij Marres of Odapark en tonen daarbij ook eigen werk.

Binnenkort: Arturo Kameya

In de lente van 2024 zal kunstenaar Arturo Kameya (Peru, 1984) het huis van Marres ombouwen tot een hotel waar de geesten van de mislukte staat Peru hun intrek hebben genomen. De gevel toont enorme schilderijen met moderne messianistische beelden. Binnen vinden bezoekers allerlei scènes, waaronder een betegeld badhuis dat zich voordoet als restaurant, een meerarmige bierfontein en een grote bovenkamer met drijvende vissen. Het interieur is een allegorie van de Peruaanse staat. Het weerspiegelt een schijnwereld waarin de waarheid minder belangrijk is dan wat uit pure noodzaak wordt opgeroepen. De kunstenaar maakt de tentoonstelling in samenwerking met Claudia Martínez Garay.

De multimediale werken van Kameya brengen een reeks visuele cultuurtalen samen en verbinden uiteenlopende verhalen, populaire mythen en historische gebeurtenissen. Zijn werk vermengt geschiedenis, mythologie en populaire cultuur om de dagelijkse strijd en tegenstrijdigheden van zijn geboorteland weer te geven.

Onwards

3 more events and another release announcement all happening this year, along with a first workshop for 2024: there is no place for looking back on Q-O2’s year in this newsletter. The future is where we seem to be:

Christophe Albertijn is hosting his last open studio day this Wednesday (13 December): if you are interested in knowing more about his HUIS project, or having a direct exchange with him and share experiences, be welcome! On 20 December, he will present his HUIS label with a screening of 3 films: 2 of the actual recordings, and one using a HUIS release as a soundtrack. In addition, photos and documentation accompanying the buildings featured in HUIS will be shown. Don’t know what HUIS is? Be sure to check his brand new website.

Second Sundays (wait, it’s on the third Sunday again – do we need a name change, dear reader?) invites Xavier García Bardón for this month’s edition, Brussels’ greatest living resource on all things experimental and expanded cinema. He will present a listening session informed by years in the cinema, on a variety of different media.

The Het BlofluitAsiel CD will be released together with Meakusma, and available via our new umland website on December 15. It features a piece performed by pupils of the music academy of Jette/Brussels and organists from the music academy of the DG, department St. Vith, who were accompanied by instrument builder Lukas De Clerck, composer Angélica Castelló and music teachers Katelijne Lanneau and Matthias Verniers. This piece is accompanied by an electroacoustic piece by Angélica Castelló, drawing inspiration from the atmospheres cultivated during the work on Het BlokfluitAsiel

The first event announcement for 2024 is an Introduction to Modular Synthesis (using Automatonism) w/ Felisha Ledesma – be sure to register on time, places are limited, and the future is coming quickly.

And lastly, a 21 Tracks for the 21st Century playlist by Marnie Slater. Bonne année!

Second Sundays #45

Xavier García Bardón

For its forty fifty edition, Second Sundays invites Xavier García Bardón, Brussels’ greatest living resource on all things experimental and expanded cinema. He will present a listening session informed by years in the cinema, on a variety of different media. Xavier García Bardón is a researcher, teacher and curator based in Brussels.

Second Sundays is a monthly series initiated by Q-O2. Each session a new guest is invited to share an insight into their own listening, playing and speaking about a selection of sound and music that is important to their thinking or practice. The sessions try to put value on listening to recorded music in a social setting as a space for discussion. The series takes place on the second Sunday of every month. Each session is paired with a cocktail-of-the-month, as decided by the invited guest.

Christophe Albertijn

During the public presentation, Christophe Albertijn offers some notes on the HUIS label, followed by a screening of 3 films: 2 of the actual recordings, and one using a HUIS release as a soundtrack. In addition, photos and documentation accompanying the buildings featured in HUIS will be shown.

On 13 December, between 10h and 13h, there is a last chance to visit Christophe’s open studio and to speak to him more directly.

Release
Het BlokfluitAsiel

Het BlokfluitAsiel is a collaboration between instrument builder Lukas De Clerck, composer Angélica Castelló and music teachers Katelijne Lanneau and Matthias Verniers. Their pupils (recorders from the music academy of Jette/Brussels and organists from the music academy of the DG, department St. Vith) performed the piece, invited to explore their own creative approaches to sound, improvisation, composition and performance. The musical piece was composed collectively, based on a concept by Angélica Castelló, aiming to establish an intense connection between Lukas De Clerck’s piece/machine AirBag/14Holes, the organ and recorders.

This piece is accompanied by an electroacoustic piece by Angélica Castelló, drawing inspiration from the atmospheres cultivated during the work on Het BlokfluitAsiel. The young artists involved in this project often likened the immense sound they collectively generated to that of a gentle monster.

The CD will be released together with Meakusma on December 15, and will be available via our umland website.

Introduction to Modular Synthesis (using Automatonism) w/ Felisha Ledesma

Join us for an introduction to modular synthesis using Automatonism, a free, open source program that uses Pure Data. Felisha will guide you through the basics of the software and modular synth terminology as well as explain a few different modular patches. No experience required, this workshop is for complete beginners. You will leave this workshop with practical examples and our worksheet so you can continue exploring on your own!

join us for a special one-day event at stand4 gallery in bay ridge, brooklyn!  ima’s publication fair, words in progress will take place on saturday, 16 december 2023 from 12noon through 5pm.

stand4 gallery is located in bay ridge brooklyn at: 414 78th street, brooklyn, new york.

in collaboration with artist, asuka ohsawa, ima will present a risograph poster and a bound artist book for each featuring the curricular committee’s guiding statement. ima and collaborating artists will have publications, editions and artwork available at this event.  several special events and happenings will also be featured throughout the day.

anastacia-renee (she/they) is a queer writer, educator, interdisciplinary artist, speaker and podcaster. she is the author of (v.) (black ocean) and forget it (black radish) and, here in the (middle) of nowhere and sidenotes from the archivist forthcoming from amistad (an imprint of harpercollins). they were selected by nbc news as part of the list of “queer artist of color dominate 2021’s must see lgbtq art shows.” anastacia-renee was former seattle civic poet (2017-2019), hugo house poet-in-residence (2015-2017), arc artist fellow (2020) and jack straw curator (2020).

her work has been anthologized in: teaching black: the craft of teaching on black life and literature, home is where you queer your heart, furious flower seeding the future of african american poetry, afrofuturism, black comics, and superhero poetry, joy has a sound, spirited stone: lessons from kubota’s garden, and seismic: seattle city of literature. her work has appeared in, hobart, foglifter, auburn avenue, catapult, alta, torch, poetry northwest, a-line, cascadia magazine, hennepin review, ms. magazine and others. renee has received fellowships and residencies from cave canem, hedgebrook, vona, ragdale, mineral school, and the new orleans writers residency.

natalia de campos (she, her) is a multidisciplinary artist and activist from são paulo, brazil working in performance, video, sound, writing, interactive media, theater, and as an actor, theater director, producer, researcher, educator and translator. natalia has lived in new york since 1998. she has a ba in history from the university of são paulo, a professional license as an actor, and an mfa in performance & interactive media arts from brooklyn college, cuny. since 1999, natalia produces multidisciplinary performances with international collaborators, objects and solo works under the name of syncretic pleasures. her works have been shown primarily in new york city and in são paulo. some venues include: chashama 461 gallery, art in odd places: sense 2017; festival de música estranha (são paulo 2015); the living theater, 70th anniversary retrospective (sesc são paulo 2017); center for the humanities, graduate center, cuny (2019); el museo del barrio; dumbo arts festival; solivagant gallery (lower east side, 2016). she has taught portuguese for 20 years at schools and independently and was an assistant teacher at new york’s school of visual arts city as site program.
isabelle cordero (she, him) is currently making a few things at the school of the museum of fine arts in boston, ma. she’ll keep making more things to finish her bfa in interdisciplinary art with a minor in visual and material studies. isabelle works hard to maintain a stream of consciousness practice. the residues of his practice tend to morph and crystalize into many forms, including drawings, paintings, collages, performances, writings, and sounds. sometimes they don’t morph or crystalize into anything. either way, she reflects on temporality, the institutional game, and bridges between digital and physical social spaces.

kariann fuqua (she/her) is an abstract artist utilizing drawing, painting and collage. she received a bfa in painting from kansas state university and an mfa in painting from the university of illinois, urbana-champaign. her work has been widely exhibited in solo and group shows across the united states including jenkins-johnson gallery (san francisco, ca), governors island (new york, ny), hyde park art center (chicago, il), byron cohen gallery (kansas city, mo), manifest gallery and drawing center(cincinnati, oh), athens institute of contemporary art (athens, ga) and was awarded a public commission at mccormick place (chicago, il). she received a joan mitchell foundation full fellowship to the vermont studio center, an individual artist fellowship from the mississippi arts commission, and her work was published in new american paintings and the artist’s magazine. she currently lives and works in oxford, mississippi where she is an instructional assistant professor of art and director of museum studies at the university of mississippi.
john ros (they/them) is a queer, non-binary, multiform conceptual installation artist working in brooklyn, new york and new england. john earned an mfa from brooklyn college, city university of new york and a bfa from the state university of new york at binghamton.

john’s mixed media conceptual installations focus on ritual as performance, space/place, light, sound and time. john has exhibited internationally and their work can be found in collections throughout the world. they see teaching, curating and program development as extensions of their social practice which they have implemented in numerous projects over the last twenty-five years.

john is currently the director of studioELL, a space for radical education in studio art practice, which they founded in london, england in 2015. john is also the founding director and curator of intermission museum of art. in addition to being a professor at studioELL, john is a lecturer at the school of the museum of fine art at tufts university, parsons school of design, the new school, central connecticut state university and ct-state: quinebaug valley community college.

featured through 30 december 2023, work-in-progress is the third installment of projects at ima and represents the culmination of committee work and collaborative projects from ima’s volume iii programming. this journey commenced with the formation of the committee for curricular thinking in february 2023. the committee’s guiding document served as the compass for the collaborative efforts that led to the creation of this exhibition. it embodies an ongoing exploration of fine art education and its evolution. this exhibition reflects the fruitful outcome of thought-provoking discussions and collaborative endeavors with invited artists and educators.

intermission museum of art (ima) was founded in 2020 by rose van mierlo and john ros as a response to the growing fractures within our cultural, social, environmental, economic, and political systems during times of crisis. ima serves as a unique space for critical thinkers to engage with these moments of friction, transforming them into meaningful sites of production and fostering dialogues that culminate in a public archive.
