06-27.06: zomerprogramma Off the Grid

Zomer! Op donderdag 6 juni verwelkomen we het mooiste der seizoenen met een nieuw programma in Off the Grid:

🕕 18u00: doors & drinks – welkom voor drinks in ons heringerichte kunstenaarsrestaurant ‘Off the Plate’.

🕖 19u00: wandeling + inauguratie vlag #6: ‘Arena’ door Koba De Meutter – de huidige reuzevlag van Bebe Books wordt opgevolgd door een nieuwe editie van Koba De Meutter. De kunstenaar liet zich inspireren door de sociale woningarchitectuur van Renaat Braem, die ze als tijdelijke bewoner van de af te breken ‘Arenasite’ in Deurne van binnenuit leerde kennen. Braem ontwierp ook de Sint-Maartensdal woonbuurt in Leuven. Deze wijk blijft wel bestaan, naast een veranderende Vaartkom. We vertrekken om 19:00 uur vanuit Cas-co voor een korte, begeleide wandeling door de verschillende wijken tot aan de vlaggenmast.

🕗 20u00: introductie + opening groepspresentatie ‘A/M #8: Trails of Terra’ – vervolgens openen we ‘Trails of Terra’, een groepspresentatie die voortkomt uit de procesmatige uitwisseling tussen kunstenaars Filip Vervaet, Ster Borgman, Hannah Kiefmann en Roeland Rooijakkers. Deze kunstenaars delen hun interesse in de onderlinge afhankelijkheid van mensen met hun omgeving en de overgang tussen human-made en natuurlijke processen. Van 6 tot 27 juni fungeert Off the Grid als ‘landschapslaboratorium’, waar deze vier verschillende artistieke praktijken elkaar ontmoeten en met elkaar en de architectuur van Cas-co interageren, alchemistische transformaties indachtig. Dit project kadert in het Apprentice / Master programma van onze Tilburgse partner Kunstpodium T.

Op 27 juni zwaaien we niet alleen het voorjaarsprogramma, maar ook een aantal residenten op gepaste wijze uit. We zien u graag tussen 19u30 en 23u00 voor een ‘potluck’ BBQ. Hou onze socials in de gaten voor meer info!

13.06: talk & studio visit Joel Valabrega

Op 13 juni ontvangt Cas-co curator Joel Valabrega (Mudam Luxembourg) voor een lunchlezing en studiobezoeken. Valabrega is curator van het Luxemburgse paviljoen op de 60e Biënnale van Venetië, met de presentatie van Andrea Mancini en Every Island, voormalig collective-in-residence bij Off the Grid (2022-2023). Tijdens de lezing om 12.00 uur zal zij dieper ingaan op haar praktijk. Daarna kunt u bij ons terecht voor een goed gesprek en een democratisch geprijsde lunch.

NIEUWS

MUTANTX, de titel van de Biënnale de l’Image Possible in 2024, is in veel opzichten uitzonderlijk. Het festival vindt plaats op een bijzondere locatie: de voormalige provinciale bibliotheek van Les Chiroux, midden in het hart van de stad. En het daarnaast ook een collectief evenement: 13 (geluksgetal?) artistieke partners besloten hun krachten te bundelen om polyfoon leven te blazen in dit immense gebouw van glas en beton. Onder hen: Cas-co. De samenwerking bestond uit: een talk en studio visits van BIP-curator Maxime Moinet (05.05), de deelname van Cas-co aan het peer event ‘un artist-run space à Liège?’ (30.05) en de uitwisselingsresidentie van Jan Duerinck, culminerend in de Open Studio en finissage van BIP as. zaterdag (01.06).

Last call: nog tot zondag (02.06) kunnen kunstenaars, curatoren en collectieven die invulling willen geven aan de komende twee seizoenen van Off the Grid hun voorstellen indienen. De geselecteerde groep(en) kunnen beschikken over werk- en presentatieplek, materiaal, een budget, begeleiding en communicatie-ondersteuning.

Nog niet voldoende beeld bij de werking? Warm je even op aan deze fotografische bloemlezing van ‘Druk in Leuven’ (27-29.04) en ‘Atelier in Beeld’ (05.05). In vijftig beelden krijg je een doorsnede van het programma: meer dan vijftien open studio’s, presentaties van Oya en Bebe, talks en performances i.k.v. het programma Back-to-Back samengesteld door Alicja Melzacka.

De Appel verwelkomt jullie graag terug in de maand juni met een rijk programma aan seminars, workshops, boeklanceringen en de opening van een nieuwe tentoonstelling. Als je de huidige tentoonstelling Edgelanders: Amsterdam on Trial / Part III: The Witnesses van Ehsan Fardjadniya en Raul Balai, dan kan dat nog tot en met 4 juni. Op maandag 3 juni kun je de tentoonstelling bezoeken tussen 14.00 en 20.00 uur en op dinsdag 4 juni tussen 10.00 en 14.00 uur. Als onderdeel van het Family Sunday-programma van Amsterdam Art Week wordt de tentoonstelling nog een laatste keer geactiveerd; mensenrechtenactivist Elke Uitentuis geeft een creatieve workshop voor ouders en kinderen. We verwelkomen de Amerikaanse dichter en performance-kunstenaar Pamela Sneed voor een seminar over haar hybride dichtbundel 9:29; Curatorial Programme-alumnus Jussi Koitela wordt vergezeld door Dahlia El Broul en Ksenia Kaverina voor de lancering van het boek Falling In: Movement and Becoming in Curatorial Research, gepubliceerd door Mousse Magazine & Publishing en Frame Contemporary Art Finland; Eszter Szakács keert terug naar de Appel voor de boekpresentatie van Solidarity Must be Defended. Aan het eind van de maand start een nieuwe solotentoonstelling van de Palestijnse kunstenaar Basma Alsharif.

Zondag 2 juni: Gelijke rechten voor iedereen?! – Family Sunday creatieve workshop

Bij de tentoonstelling Edgelanders in de Appel zal beeldend kunstenaar en mensenrechtenactivist Elke Uitentuis een workshop verzorgen voor ouders en kinderen. In deze creatieve workshop worden onderwerpen als mensenrechten, activisme en solidariteit geïntroduceerd door middel van schrijven, kleuren en tekenen. De workshop sluit aan bij de tentoonstelling waarin kunstenaars Ehsan Fardjadniya en Raul Balai een tribunaal starten tegen de stad Amsterdam. Ze eisen dat de stad zich houdt aan haar ethische en juridische verplichtingen. Wat kun je doen als mensenrechten niet worden nageleefd? Wat zijn je rechten als niet-volwassen persoon? En hoe kun jij je als kind of tiener inzetten voor de rechten van andere kinderen? Tijdens deze workshop leer je je op een creatieve manier uiten, en hoe je je stem kunt laten horen.

Dit is een open workshop, op basis van vrije inloop. Aanmelden is niet nodig. De workshop is voor ouders en kinderen en is zowel in het Nederlands als in het Engels te volgen. Aanbevolen leeftijd: vanaf 6 jaar.

Woensdag 12 juni: 9:29 – Seminar met Pamela Sneed

Pamela Sneed bespreekt selecties uit een nieuwe hybride dichtbundel, 9:29, die reflecteert op de opstanden in Floyd, de dood van haar vader, de pandemie en veel filmrecensies. Ze zal vooraf een selectie van teksten opsturen die de deelnemers kunnen lezen en waarop ze schriftelijk kunnen reageren. Tijdens het seminar bespreekt ze de teksten met de deelnemers, die hun schriftelijke reacties delen en met elkaar in discussie gaan.

Er is beperkte capaciteit voor dit seminar, je kunt hier een ticket bemachtigen.

Maandag 17 juni: Falling In: Movement and Becoming in Curatorial Research – Boekpresentatie

De Appel is verheugd om een gesprek te organiseren over curatorieel onderzoek rond de nieuwe publicatie Falling In: Movement and Becoming in Curatorial Research, samengesteld door een van haar alumni Jussi Koitela, samen met Dahlia El Broul en Ksenia Kaverina. Het boek is uitgegeven door Frame Contemporary Art Finland in samenwerking met Mousse Magazine & Publishing. Het evenement wordt georganiseerd in samenwerking met Frame en het Fins Cultureel Instituut voor de Benelux. Falling In: Movement and Becoming in Curatorial Research brengt curatoren van verschillende geografische locaties samen om hun methoden, motieven en doelen voor het uitvoeren van onderzoek op het gebied van cureren te bespreken. Ze duiken collectief in de diepten van hun werk, met inbegrip van de performatieve, educatieve, historische, affectieve, lichamelijke, activistische en collectieve aspecten.

Falling In wordt gepubliceerd in het kader van de Frame Curatorial Research Fellowship en bevat bijdragen van Ama Josephine Budge, Diana Campbell, Sonia D’Alto, Léuli Eshrāghi, Satu Herrala en Eva Neklyaeva, Initiative for Practices and Visions of Radical Care in samenwerking met Anaïs Lepage, Miguel A. López, Nikolay Smirnov, en TOK (Creative Association of Curators, Anna Bitkina en Maria Veits).

De presentatie vindt plaats op maandag 17 juni en begint om 18:00 uur. Er is een beperkte capaciteit voor dit evenement, reserveer hier.

Woensdag 19 juni: Solidarity Must be Defended – Boeklancering

Kom op 19 juni naar de Appel voor de boekpresentatie van Solidarity Must Be Defended, geredigeerd door Eszter Szakács en Naeem Mohaiemen. Deze bloemlezing brengt projecten samen over bewegingen en opstellingen binnen de beeldende kunst rond transnationale solidariteit tijdens de Koude Oorlog. In dialoog met de stilste tendensen van ongebondenheid, en de radicale vector van bevrijdingsbewegingen, kijkt het boek naar zowel grootse initiatieven als tragische mislukkingen van een verstrengelde, dekoloniserende wereld. Het uitgangspunt voor deze bloemlezing is een speciaal nummer van het tijdschrift Mezosfera (“Refractions of Socialist Solidarity”), uitgegeven in Boedapest door Szakács in dialoog met Mohaiemen’s driekanaalsfilm Two Meetings and a Funeral (2017). Het boek is een pleidooi voor het vieren van transnationale solidariteit, maar stelt ook dat het ook uiterst moeilijk is om deze solidariteit te belichamen. Voor de lancering zal mede-redacteur Eszter Szakács samen met auteur Sanjukta Sunderason in gesprek gaan.

Laatste week van de tentoonstelling: Edgelanders: Amsterdam on Trial / Part III: The Witnesses

In het kunstproject Edgelanders bouwen de kunstenaars Ehsan Fardjadniya en Raul Balai aan een (zelf georganiseerd) proces tegen de stad Amsterdam en eisen daarmee dat de stad zich houdt aan haar ethische en juridische verplichtingen. Ze bouwen geleidelijk toe naar een openbaar proces tegen de stad in het jubileumjaar 2025. In de jaren daarvoor zullen ze bewijs opbouwen, getuigen horen en de aanklacht opstellen. Door middel van verschillende presentatievormen vindt er uitwisseling plaats met verschillende belanghebbenden en inwoners van de stad, zoals ongedocumenteerden, burgers, politici, advocaten en organisaties die zich met deze kwestie bezighouden. Terwijl de kunstenaars in oktober een eerste hoofdstuk presenteerden in de vorm van een installatie in het Amsterdam Museum als onderdeel van Refresh Amsterdam 2 en een performance en tentoonstelling in Podium Mozaïek als tweede hoofdstuk, zal in de Appel een derde hoofdstuk worden gepresenteerd, dat zich richt op de getuigen. De getuigen zijn de ongedocumenteerde vluchtelingen. Door middel van video’s van gesprekken met hen, zoomen Raul en Ehsan in op hun ervaringen met het leven in een gemeentelijke opvang en hun strijd om bewijs te verzamelen voor het tribunaal tegen de stad Amsterdam in 2025.

De tentoonstelling is ook geopend op maandag 3 juni (tussen 14:00 – 20:00 uur) en dinsdag 4 juni (tussen 10:00 en 14:00 uur).

Donderdag 27 juni: Basma Alsharif Solotentoonstelling – Opening

De Appel is verheugd Basma Alsharif’s eerste solotentoonstelling in Nederland aan te kondigen. Basma’s werk doorkruist veel thema’s die gerelateerd zijn aan de Appel’s huidige focus: haar werk in video en film roept veel vragen op met betrekking tot (de representatie van) land, ballingschap en behoren. In de tentoonstellingsruimte van de Appel worden drie installaties gepresenteerd: Trompe l’œil (2016), een installatie van een mise en scene, foto’s en video over wie het recht heeft om beelden te maken en te reproduceren; A Philistine (2019-2023), een novelle van Alsharif over Loza, die zich op een treinreis achteruit in de tijd door de geschiedenis beweegt, het verhaal van het boek zet aan tot nieuwe mogelijkheden voor Palestijnse toekomsten en verlangens; Capital (2023), een video en een serie foto’s over de opkomst van het fascisme in Egypte, waarbij de nadruk ligt op architectuur om de verschuiving van het koloniale verleden naar een huidige neokoloniale overname te benadrukken. Basma’s film Ouroboros (2017) wordt aan het einde van elke tentoonstellingsdag vertoond. Ouroboros is een speelfilm die archiefbeelden van de vernietiging in Gaza bevat, met een griezelige panoptische blik en weelderige 16mm-beelden. Chinook, de Noord-Amerikaanse inheemse taal die wordt gesproken door Basma’s collega-kunstenaar-filmmaker Sky Hopinka in de film, brengt de twee vrijheidsstrijden samen. Als onderdeel van de opening krijgt haar nieuwe doorlopende werk Morning Circle vorm als een symposium en een reeks workshops die kritisch kijken naar de manieren waarop de westerse culturele hegemonie immigranten niet ziet als integraal onderdeel van hun bevolking, door een van de meest kwetsbare ruimtes als uitgangspunt te nemen: de kleuterschool, als een ruimte van potentiële hervorming.

De tentoonstelling opent op donderdag 27 juni van 16.00 tot 21.00 uur. Kinderen zijn welkom.

Kunstenaarsprints voor medische hulp in Palestina in de Appel boekwinkel

Na de succesvolle Palestina Fundraiser van Cinetol op 11 mei hebben we nog een aantal prints op voorraad, die nu op donatiebasis te koop zijn in de boekwinkel van de Appel. Alle donaties gaan rechtstreeks naar medische hulp in Palestina. Bezoek de boekwinkel tijdens de reguliere openingstijden van de Appel: tussen woensdag en zondag, tussen 14.00 en 20.00 uur. De prints zijn gemaakt door: Karin Iturralde Nurnberg, Arvo Leo, Marishka Soekarna, Wouter Stroet, Victor Santamarina en Sophie Soobramanien.

Zaterdag 8 juni: Playbill presents a musical tribute to Big Mama Thornton – Performance in Torpedo Theater

Pamela Sneed–dichter, performer en beeldend kunstenaar uit New York–brengt haar onlangs ontwikkelde performanceproject A Tribute to Big Mama Thornton voor het eerst naar Amsterdam. A Tribute to Big Mama Thornton ging begin 2023 in New York in première en wordt tot leven gebracht in de stijl van een juke joint – een term uit de Afro-Amerikaanse volksmond voor een etablissement waar muziek wordt gemaakt, gedanst en gedronken – en eert zangeres en liedjesschrijver Big Mama Thornton. Sneed plaatst de erfenis van Big Mama Thornton binnen de queer canon door haar aanwezigheid als zwarte en transgender performer te onderzoeken. Het evenement vindt plaats op 8 juni om 20.00 uur in het Torpedo Theater, Amsterdam. Sneed wordt bijgestaan door performers Mara Rosenbloom, Michael Vatcher en Jasper Stadhouders. Tickets voor de voorstelling gaan maandag 29 mei in de verkoop.

Why Germany: doorlopende online lezingreeks

Why Germany is een internationale lezingenreeks over de onderdrukking van het vrije woord in Duitsland en daarbuiten. In Duitsland waren enkele van de meest effectieve actoren in de intimidatie van Palestijnen en hun bondgenoten de afgelopen maanden culturele podia, kunstscholen en universiteiten. De vijandigheid tegenover het opkomen voor Palestijnse levens is groter dan de recente escalaties in Europa of de VS: de blokkade is grondiger, het taalgebruik haatdragender, de maatregelen extremer. Met behulp van historische perspectieven en specifieke casestudy’s van Duitse kunstacademies en universiteiten gaat deze serie in op de eclips van het vrije woord en de vertakkingen daarvan voor lokale culturele landschappen, maar ook voor buren en bondgenoten – en niet te vergeten voor Palestina zelf. Deze wekelijkse lezingen worden georganiseerd door een netwerk van instellingen dat in de loop van de tijd zal groeien. Door middel van een doorlopend programma creëert het een ruimte voor creatieve, geïnformeerde en weloverwogen expressie. Belangrijk is dat de serie verder gaat dan kritiek alleen en strategieën voor de toekomst voorstelt: welke talen, allianties, beleid en ondersteuningssystemen kunnen op de langere termijn een zekere mate van autonomie garanderen?

Op 31 mei opent Greylight Projects in samenwerking met Floor Snels en Fenna Koot de nieuwe expositie “How does that relate to this and that and there?”.

Kunstenaars Floor Snels en Fenna Koot bieden inzichten op welke hiërarchieën er bestaan in onze directe omgeving. Door de geschiedenis heen zijn we onszelf als mensen steeds meer als maker of eigenaar van de wereld gaan zien. Echter, in een tijd van grote, overlappende crisissen en transities is het nodig meer grip te krijgen op hoe we bestaande hiërarchieën kunnen herstructureren.

De werken die onderdeel zijn van deze expositie dagen je uit om een hegemonische hiërarchie met de omgeving af te breken en op gelijke voet te gaan staan. Maken wij de wereld of maakt de wereld ons? Of maken we samen?

Ara Méndez Murillo (b. 1997, Cordoba, ES) lives and works in Brussels. She finished her Master in painting at La Cambre, Brussels, in 2022.

We did a first duo-exhibition with her work in our venue in Lovenjoel. This second show is titled ‘The other team’. In her words : ‘We divide the world into categories that we associate with symbols. Words like ‘left’, ‘centre’ or ‘right’; physical elements like a flag, serve to associate heterogeneous groups of people with concrete ideas, determining in a few seconds our position towards the other. To what extent do we consciously belong to our teams? If those in which I include myself are made up of complex and nuanced people, the other is almost always an abstract mass. It is easier to develop this kind of humiliating and puerile contempt against an unknown enemy.’

Maria Kley (b.1981, Tokyo, JP) lives and works in Brussels. She studied fashion design at ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem (NL). Her artistic practice was preceded by several years of working in the fashion industry. From 2018-2019 Kley was a resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam.

‘The Animals’ is a sculptural series made with medical gauze and based on drawings by Maria Kley’s son Rune during the first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. In Locomotion, these drawings were partially animated in a stop-motion projection inhabiting the gallery space. You are invited to Whitehouse Gallery Brussels for the finissage of ‘Fleshy pink, a murmur in blues’, a duo show by Anton Cotteleer & Simona Mihaela Stoia. The artists will be present for a chat and a drink.

Fleshy pink, a murmur in blues

Anton Cotteleer (°1974, Kapellen) lives and works in Kalmthout (BE). He is mainly known for the combination of modelled human and animal fragments and deconstructed domestic objects. He is interested in the relationship of humans and animals to the domestic biotope.

Ambiguities and dualities keep the work in a gray zone. Eroticism, innocence, mysticism and banality each claim their presence but are always negated by each other. Visual and content contradictions set the tone. As a result, the works are rarely explicit and remain partially elusive. In addition to memories from the collective memory, the sculptures also contain autobiographical traces; memories, whether or not fueled by personal photo material.

Simona Mihaela Stoia (°1982, RO – lives and works in Ottenburg & Overijse (BE). She studied law in Romania and subsequently obtained a Masters degree in painting at KASK in Ghent, where she currently teaches. In her layered paintings with very different colour registers, she creates a tension between intense, passionate brushstrokes and calm, reasoned surfaces. She models volumes that evoke the image of body parts, animals or plants against an abstract background. In this way she builds paintings that are at the same time sensual, mysterious, compact, open and bold.

igni (fire in Latin) is an ongoing nomadic curatorial project focusing on the athenian scene, where the modalities of apparition and disappearance of the artworks are at the center of attention.
Fire can also be dangerous. It serves as a reminder of reality, urging us not only to be amazed by it but also to be able to face it. It is about remaining conscious of our surroundings.

Originally known as one of the oldest palindrome from antiquity, in girum imus nocte ecce et consumimur igni, was also used by Guy Debord for an eponymous movie.

fluent is excited to call for candidates from different fields of knowledge to apply for the second edition of PRAXIS, a study programme taking place from September 18th through December 22nd, 2024.

This intensive in—person educational apparatus runs during 14 weeks (180 contact hours) and aims at instigating a theoretical and practice–based learning process that dives into the systems that constitute our material and immaterial lives.

The programme is structured in four dimensions (or learning modules):

I MODULE: VITAL DIMENSION (Directed by Michael Marder)

II MODULE: THE DIMENSION OF LANGUAGE AND IDENTITY (Directed by Anne Boyer)

III MODULE: STRUCTURAL DIMENSION (Directed by Fred Moten & Stefano Harney)

IV MODULE: CORPOREAL & MOVING DIMENSION (Directed by Andrea Rodrigo)

The faculty is also composed by a group of guest professors including Joy James, Manuel Segade, Yayo Herrero, Hypatia Vourloumis, The State of Reza Abdoh, Marisol de la Cadena, Paulino Viota, La Ortiga, Chus Martínez, Isabel de Naverán, Alejandro Alonso Díaz, Itziar Okariz, Quinn Latimer and many others.

Those interested in taking part in PRAXIS must submit their applications by July 10th via e–mail to

Der NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein lädt herzlich zur Finissage der Ausstellung THANK GOD GOD IS DEAD des Künstlers Monty Richthofen ein.

Monty Richthofen wird anwesend sein und es wird eine Performance des Künstlers geben. Mit Würstchen vom Grill, Drinks und Musik möchten wir zusammen den Abend und die Ausstellung ausklingen lassen.

Darüber hinaus ist die Ausstellung sowohl am 25. als auch 26. Mai zu den regulären Zeiten geöffnet.

Monty Richthofen (* 1995 in München) studierte Performance und Design an der Central Saint Martins University of the Arts in London. Seit seinem Abschluss im Jahr 2018, fordert er die konventionelle Poesie intensiv heraus, wie beispielsweise durch die malerische Visualisierung von Texten, dem Schreiben im öffentlichen Raum oder dem handschriftlichen Tätowieren. Richthofen lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

Galerie Greta Meert is pleased to present 76 Frames, an exhibition that arises from Iñaki Bonillas's ongoing research on the relationship between photography and cinema.

The artist sees cinema as an infinite archive of still photographs, which can be used in equally endless ways. This time, Bonillas focused on moments that in a movie would be almost imperceptible but, if stopped in time, take on an entirely different perspective. The still images show objects as if they were actors immersed in the adventure of changing shape, of thinking, of falling, of breaking into a thousand pieces. A sense of suspense is created as the images mark the passage from one place to another, where the final act is postponed, and tension arises.

Zürich will be Terry Adkin's first solo exhibition at Galerie Greta Meert, showcasing a selection of his sculptural work from the late 1980s.

Throughout his life, Terry Adkins developed a diverse artistic practice which included sculpture, live music, spoken language, and video. Rooted in a deep appreciation for abstraction, Adkins created a bridge between the influences of modernist sculpture and the vernacular craft and musical traditions of the American South. Central to Adkins's artistic philosophy was the concept of “potential disclosure,” which he described as the process of revealing the hidden value of discarded materials. Delving into historical and industrial sites, archives, and his local community, Adkins scavenged dismissed materials crafting them into artworks of remarkable ambition.

TALK & WALK is een serie ontmoetingen met de kunstenaars die werkzaam zijn bij Greylight Projects in Heerlen. Tijdens de TALK & WALK-sessies vertellen kunstenaars over hun werk en project in Heerlen.

(NL) Dit voorjaar, van mei tot juni, organiseert Greylight Projects weer twee residenties. Ali Glover en Carole Louis zijn beide geselecteerd voor de performing landscapes residenties. Aan het einde van hun residentie maken ze deel uit van het performing landscapes festival op 7 september in Luik. Zowel Ali als Carole stellen zichzelf voor tijdens deze Talk&Walk.

Van 25 april tot en met 21 juni werkt Ward vanuit het Atelier in de stad aan zijn onderzoek naar Heerlen. Hij zet daarbij methoden in zoals tekenen, fotografie en interviews om verschillende perspectieven op Heerlen te verzamelen.

Op 22 mei kun je meewandelen door de stad. Tijdens deze wandeling worden verschillende plekken bezocht. Op elk van deze locaties zal een moment plaatsvinden waarop anekdotes gedeeld worden over wat er te zien is. Daarnaast word je uitgenodigd om dit zelf via fotografie of schetsen vast te leggen.

Door deel te nemen aan deze wandeling help je Ward met het aanvullen van zijn archief en word je uitgedaagd om met andere ogen te kijken naar een (mogelijk) bekende omgeving. Tijdens de wandeling deelt Ward zijn leerproces over bijvoorbeeld het werken met cartografische technieken en de verbindingen tussen architectuur en persoonlijke historie.

Each session a new guest is invited to share an insight into their own listening, playing and speaking about a selection of sound and music that is important to their thinking or practice. The sessions try to put value on listening to recorded music in a social setting as a space for discussion. The series takes place on the second Sunday of every month,. Each session is paired with a cocktail-of-the-month, as decided by the invited guest.

multilogue will present four sound performances for multiple performers, developed during a week-long residency. Starting at Q-02, the audience will be guided on a tour through nearby parks and urban public spaces for which these performances have been conceived.

multilogue (Jiyun Park, Sybella Perry, Hye Young Sin, Franziska Windisch) is a collective of four artists based in Köln, Berlin and Brussels with a shared interest in sound, space, movement and interaction. In this collaborative framework, they develop individual pieces simultaneously while continuously rotating the roles of author and performer.

fluent is pleased to announce the spring summer 2024 programme.

Bringing together practices that engage in maintenance as a form of infrastructural love and desire, fluent’s current and upcoming programme navigates the exhibition and education spaces as sites of ‘self-insufficiency’, in which ‘unity’ denotes a fragile, historically-constructed fantasy.

While the economy of maintenance is enclosed in a logic of financial and personal debt and exchange, the specter of artistic and intellectual positions unfolding throughout the coming months, look at the poetic and political traces of maintenance as possibilities to keep ourselves close to the world’s surfaces and systems. Thinking through logistical, spatial, structural, and relational logics, the programme imagines maintenance as a compassive pattern eluding the inhumanity that capital, states and institutions increasingly naturalize.

Poetics & politics of maintenance: Show me you are not the light I called to, but the darkness behind it.

The undertitle of this exhibition takes its name from a verse in Rose, a poem by Louise Glück in which belonging and identity struggle at light, while longing for a darker, freer regime. Maintenance has often been seen as this darker, back–staged dimension where the conditions for life to take place, are proccured. This exhibition dismantles such distinction, one that cuts across light and darkness, and focus on maintenance as a site that calls calling for time, dedication, closeness and attention, in which organic and inorganic bodies establish an intimate reciprocity.

All the works in Poetics & politics of maintenance emerge from this field of structural sensuality: tightness, overlaps, cuts and frictions do not operate as inert services —as in the social language of usership and consumerism—, but as a complex set of affinities: this of moving and being moved.

Poetics & politics of maintenance is dedicated to the memory of radical theorist Marina Vishmidt (1976–2024).

PRAXIS is fluent’s educational apparatus, a structure for independent studies to take place from September 18th through December 22nd, 2024.

The second edition of the program will follow the same in–person format, running during 14 weeks (180 contact hours) and aiming to instigate a theoretical and practice–based learning process that dives into the systems that constitute our material and immaterial lifes. The programme is structured in four dimensions –or learning modules– directed by:

Commission opening: Saturday, July 13th

Aguas vivas, lenguas de agua channels the desire from different generations in the small village of Llanos in Cantabria, Spain, to recover the three water fountains and creating a common resource of memories and social life in them.

The opening of this commission culminates more than two years and a half of assemblies, debates and experimentation around the meaning, oral traditions and potential futures these three fountains contain for the community. The exchanges between the neighbors of Llanos and artist Laia Estruch brings together voice and water through a series of tongue–fountains. These tongues are both bodies of water, instruments and hinges that connect the act of listening with the territory. Taking Laia’s research on popular songs around water and its mythologies as a starting point, the three fountains configure a sonic landscape whose morphology is molded collectivelly.

Sehnsucht mit Yann Freichels

In dieser Folge bekommt ihr einen Briefwechsel zwischen dem Künstler Yann Freichels und IKOB-Direktor Frank-Thorsten Moll zu hören. Es geht um die Malerei an sich: wie sie sich anfühlt, was sie mit der Zeit macht, ihre Beziehung zum Körper und zum Kopf. Außerdem: Musik und das Mythos des Malergenies. Wie gewohnt mit musikalischen Einlagen inspiriert vom Inhalt des Gesprächs. Hier geht’s zur Sendung auf Studio Néau.

Das IKOB bietet auch diesen Sommer ein Ferienatelier für junge Menschen von 8 bis 13 Jahren an.

In verschiedenen Ateliers können die Kinder ihrer eigenen Fantasie und Kreativität freien Lauf lassen und lernen, dass sie selbst auch Künstler oder Künstlerin sein können. Am letzten Tag werden die während der Woche entstandenen Projekte in eine Ausstellung verwandelt und für die Familien präsentiert.

Zum Abschluss der Ausstellung Katalin Ladik. Oooooooo-pus begrüßen wir kommenden Donnerstag, den 16.05.2024 um 19 Uhr noch einmal Katalin Ladik im Ludwig Forum. Gemeinsam mit dem Sound- und Performancekünstler Zsolt Sőrés, wird die Künstlerin im Rahmen eines elektroakustischen Konzerts das Ende ihrer Ausstellung feiern. Um 17 Uhr haben Sie zudem nochmals die Möglichkeit, die Ausstellung im Rahmen einer Kuratorinnenführung mit Fanny Hauser zu besuchen.

Anlässlich der letzten Ausstellungswoche der Ausstellung Oooooooo-pus kommt Katalin Ladik nochmals für eine letzte Performance nach Aachen. Gemeinsam mit ihrem langjährigen Kollaborateur, dem Sound- und Performancekünstler Zsolt Sőrés aka Ahad, präsentiert die Künstlerin im Rahmen eines elektroakustischen experimentellen Musikkonzerts ihre phonische Poesie. Katalin Ladik und Zsolt Sőrés arbeiten seit über 20 Jahren zusammen, u.a. als Teil des Gruppenprojekts Spiritus Noister (mit dem Tondichter Endre Szkárosi).

Zsolt Sőrés alias Ahad (geb. 1969 in Budapest) ist seit den frühen 1990er Jahren als Komponist, Improvisator (Bratsche, Stimme, Elektronik), Klang- und Intermedia-Künstler tätig. 2021 erhielt er das DAAD-Stipendium für das Berliner Künstlerprogramm im Bereich Klangkunst und Musik und lebt seither in Berlin. Seit 2014 unterrichtet Sőrés an der Abteilung für elektronische Musik und Medienkunst an der Liszt Ferenc Universität für Musik in Budapest. Unter anderem organisierte er zwischen 1995 und 2011 experimentelle Musikfestivals und Klangkunstreihen in Budapest (Pause-Sign Festival; Relative /Cross/Hearings u.a). Im Jahr 2014 kuratierte er auch die erste internationale Ausstellung für Klanginstallationen in Ungarn in der Kunsthalle Budapest (Sound Art – On the Edge of Perceptibility). Er arbeitet häufig mit Künstler*innen aus anderen künstlerischen Bereichen und Disziplinen zusammen. Zu aktuellen Projekten zählen Ahad (solo), Trio mit Franz Hautzinger und Kazuhisha Uchihashi, Zappi W. Diermaier’s faust, Un-garians duo mit André Vida, Formationen mit Yorgos Dimitriadis, Nicola L. Hein, Hilary Jeffery, Andrea Parkins, Matt Rogalsky, Richard Scott, Jean-Michel Van Schouwburg, Ute Wassermann und vielen mehr. Seit 2020 betreibt er sein eigenes Label Hinge Thunder.

Katalin Ladik (geb. 1942 in Novi Sad) ist Dichterin, bildende Künstlerin und Schauspielerin. Ihre visuelle und akustische Poesie, Performances und Körperkunst basieren auf der intermedialen Neuinterpretation von Körper und Sprache, Klang und Visualität. Seit den späten 1970er Jahren war sie an mehreren internationalen Ausstellungen beteiligt, zuletzt waren ihre Werke unter anderem auf der Manifesta 14 in Pristina (2022), der documenta 14 in Kassel und Athen (2017), in der Shedhalle Zürich (2018) und im IVAM Valencia (2019) zu sehen. Ihre Werke befinden sich unter anderem in den Sammlungen der Tate, des MoMA in New York und des MACBA in Barcelona.

Anmerkungen zu den Double Wall Projects 2004-2008 im Ludwig Forum Aachen

„Im Zuge der damals anstehenden Neupräsentation der einmaligen Sammlung Ludwig und ihrer Gliederung in einen Amerikanischen und einen Europäischen Flügel entstand um 2003 die Idee, die beiden größten gegenüberliegenden Wände des Ludwig Forums (mit jeweils 14 Metern Höhe und 9 Metern Breite!) auf eine neue Art und Weise zu denken und zu bespielen. In unmittelbarem räumlichen Bezug zur LED-Installation von Jenny Holzer (Ohne Titel, 1991) sowie zur dreiteiligen Videoskulptur Earth, Moon, Sun (1990) von Nam June Paik dienten sie nämlich bislang nur als Fond riesiger Formate der Sammlung. Durch deren sinnvollere Kontextualisierung eröffnete sich nun die Möglichkeit, diese beiden enormen Flächen Künstler*innen direkt als Interventionsraum für die Dauer eines Jahres anzubieten. Auf diese Weise konnte sowohl die Energie und Intensität einer aktuellen künstlerischen Haltung den Ort neu vitalisieren als auch ein komplexes Beziehungsgefüge zwischen Intervention und Sammlung aufgebaut werden.“ (Harald Kunde)

In seinem Vortrag stellt Harald Kunde, Direktor des Ludwig Forums von 2002-2008 und Initiator der Double Wall Projects, die Projekte von Margret Eicher (2004/05), Barbara Kruger (2005/06), Henrik Schrat (2006/07) und Dan Perjovschi (ab 2008) ausführlich vor und erläutert Intentionen und Hintergründe der temporären Interventionen, zu deren Charakter es unweigerlich gehört, dass sie im physischen Sinne nicht mehr vorhanden sind.

Seit Dezember 2023 ist die Reihe in erweiterter Form wieder fester Bestandteil des Ausstellungsprogramms am Ludwig Forum Aachen.

On the occasion of the closing of the exhibition Oooooooo-pus, artist Katalin Ladik will be returning to Aachen for a final performance. Together with her long-time collaborator, the sound and performance artist Zsolt Sőrés aka Ahad, the artist will present her phonic poetry as part of an electro-acoustic experimental music concert. Katalin Ladik and Zsolt Sőrés have been working together for over 20 years, among other things, as part of the group project “Spiritus Noister” (with the sound poet Endre Szkárosi).

Zsolt Sőrés aka Ahad (Budapest, Hungary, 1969) has been active since the early 1990s as a composer, improviser (viola, voice, electronics), sound and intermedia artist. He has been living in Berlin since he was awarded the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program fellowship in Sound Art and Music in 2021. Sőrés has been teaching at the Electronic Music Media Art Department at Liszt Ferenc University of Music in Budapest since 2014. Among others he organized experimental music festivals and sound art series between 1995 and 2011 in Budapest (Pause-Sign Festival; Relative /Cross/Hearings etc.). In 2014 he also curated the first international sound installation art exhibition in Hungary at Kunsthalle Budapest (Sound Art – On the Edge of Perceptibility). Katalin Ladik (born 1942 in Novi Sad) is a poet, visual artist and actress. Her visual and acoustic poetry, performances and body art are based on the intermedial reinterpretation of body and language, sound and visuality. Since the late 1970s she has been involved in several international exhibitions, most recently at Manifesta 14 in Pristina (2022), documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens (2017), Shedhalle Zurich (2018) at IVAM Valencia (2019). Her works can be found in the collections of the Tate, the MoMA in New York and the MACBA in Barcelona.

“In the course of the then upcoming new presentation of the unique Ludwig Collection and its division into an American and a European wing, the idea arose around 2003 to rethink and use the two largest opposing walls of the Ludwig Forum (each 14 meters high and 9 meters wide!) in a new way. In direct spatial relation to the LED installation by Jenny Holzer (Untitled, 1991) and the three-part video sculpture Earth, Moon, Sun (1990) by Nam June Paik, they had previously only served as a background for large-scale formats of the collection. Their more meaningful contextualization now opened up the possibility of offering these two enormous surfaces directly to artists as an intervention space for the duration of a year. In this way, both the energy and intensity of a current artistic position could revitalize the space and a complex relationship between intervention and collection could be established.” (Harald Kunde)

In his lecture, Prof. Harald Kunde, director of the Ludwig Forum from 2002-2008 and initiator of the Double Wall Projects, will present the previous projects by Margret Eicher (2004/05), Barbara Kruger (2005/06), Henrik Schrat (2006/07) and Dan Perjovschi (from 2008) in detail and explain the intentions and backgrounds of the temporary interventions, whose character inevitably includes the fact that they are no longer present in the physical sense.

Since December 2023, the series has once again been an integral part of the exhibition program at the Ludwig Forum Aachen in an expanded form.

The first edition was conceived in close dialogue between Eva Birkenstock (Director, Ludwig Forum Aachen) and Hermann Müller (Literary Curator, Berlin) and is generously supported by the Kunststiftung NRW.Müller.
