OPEN CALL: Borderland Residencies 2024

We are excited to announce the Open Call for the 2024 cycle of Borderlands Residencies at Ludwig Forum Aachen. After past years’ successful first edition in collaboration with the program and our first much beloved resident Tini Aliman, we once again offer a three-month residency for internationally working visual artists or artist duos on the grounds of our museum. After past years successful first edition in collaboration with the program, we once again offer a three-month residency for internationally working visual artists or artist duos at the grounds of our museum. The scholarship is for artists interested in researching and working between and in dialogue to the Rhineland and the Belgian-Dutch artscene starting September 1, 2024. Beside a monthly stipend, the grand includes studio visits, opening and closing events and regular field trips with the other artists from the program in the EuRegion. 

Borderland Residencies is a support structure of annual art residencies in the Dutch-Belgium-German border area of the Lower Rhine region, Aachen, East Belgium and the Province of Limburg from September to the end of November. The program not only co-finances scholarships, short-term artistic interventions and co-productions, but on top offers a strong transnational network and support structure to each years’ scholarship holders through regular meetings and activities, by sharing its professional contacts and expertise and inquiring opportunities to present works throughout the EuRegion.

Ludwig Forum Aachen is an internationally renowned museum for contemporary art, set on the Western border of Germany. It is the home of significant parts of the famous Peter and Irene Ludwig Collection, that is distributed across over 20 museums globally. Beside works from post-war Germany and Western Europe, Ludwig Forum Aachen houses significant collections of US-American Pop Art, Hyperrealism, Pattern and Decoration and other artistic movements from the 1960s onwards. Furthermore, it is the home to contemporary art from China, to one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary art from Cuba as well as to extensive collections of art from Soviet Russia, the former soviet republics, and from Central and Eastern Europe. Its transdisciplinary program combines solo and group exhibitions with research projects, conferences, screenings, music and dance festivals and other educational activities, to continuously expand and re-contextualize its collections in dialog with the public. On its grounds the museum contains 6000 square meters of exhibition space on four floors, a theatre, a sculpture garden, and a large art mediation workshop with printing and pottery facilities.

The museum is located in the city of Aachen, the westernmost city in Germany with a population of around 249,000. It borders Maastricht (NL) and Liège (BE) in the west, and Bonn and Cologne in the east. The 2024 cycle to Borderlands Residencies manifests the second time the museum collaborates with the network.


Ludwig Forum Aachen offers:

• free accommodation in a furnished studio apartment (approx. 40 m2) with kitchenette and bathroom with direct access to an adjacent studio space on the first floor of the museum.
• studio space (circa 100 m2) on the first floor of the museum
• a monthly contribution for living expenses and material costs of of a total of EUR 1.500.- (incl VAT)
• a coverage of travel expenses to and from Aachen up to EUR 1000.-
• a final project / presentation / event at the museum
• assistance in connecting with the local art scene, in organizing studio visits with professionals from the artworld and in carrying out artistic research projects
• the participation in regular events at Ludwig Forum Aachen as well as within the institutional network of the Borderlands Residencies

We regret that the facilities for the residency program are not yet wheelchair accessible.
 

Eligibility

The residency is suitable for professional individual visual artists, artist duos or small groups working collaboratively. Artists who are based in Germany or are enrolled at a university at the time of application are not eligible to apply (excluding artists enrolled in PhD programs).

The criteria for awarding the residency is primarily the quality of the application and work submitted. The selected artist is requested to be present on site during the residency.


Application

Applicants are asked to submit including a short proposal for a context-specific project proposal (up to two pages), a CV (up to two pages), and a portfolio (PDF file, max. 10 MB, max. 10 A4 pages, if applicable with links to moving image and/or sound works).

Anlässlich der Ausstellung Monument to My Paper Body von Ulrike Müller laden wir Sie am Sonntag, den 09.06.2024 um 12 Uhr herzlich zu einer Präsentation des Buchs Each One Another von Rachel Haidu ein. Im Anschluss an einen Kurzvortrag der Kunsthistorikerin und Kritikerin findet ein Gespräch zwischen Rachel Haidu und Ulrike Müller statt.

Die Veranstaltung findet in englischer Sprache statt.

In Each One Another legt Rachel Haidu dar, wie wir von der zeitgenössischen Kunst lernen können, uns als Selbst zu verstehen – wie wir uns als Einheit und unser Inneres wahrnehmen können und es uns gelingt, zwischen den Rollen zu wechseln, die uns mit Fremden und uns Nahestehenden sowie mit vergangenen und zukünftigen Generationen verbinden. Haidu betrachtet generationenübergreifende Künstler*innenpaare, um zu untersuchen, wie drei ästhetische Mittel – Formen in der Malerei, Figuren in Film und Video und Rollen im Tanz – es uns ermöglichen, unser Selbst zu begreifen. Ein besseres Verständnis unseres Selbst, so argumentiert sie, kann unser Denken über Identität und Subjektivität in fruchtbarere Richtungen lenken. 

Rachel Haidu ist Kunsthistorikerin und Kritikerin sowie Assoziierte Professorin für Kunstgeschichte und visuelle und kulturelle Studien an der Universität von Rochester. Sie ist die Autorin von The Absence of Work: Marcel Broodthaers 1964-1976 (2010) und Verfasserin einer Vielzahl von Essays, zuletzt über die Arbeiten von James Coleman, Yvonne Rainer, Gerhard Richter und Sol LeWitt. Each One Another. The Self in Contemporary Art erschien im Juli 2023 bei der University of Chicago Press.

Die Veranstaltung findet statt anlässlich der aktuellen Ausstellung Monutment to My Paper Body von Ulrike Müller im Ludwig Forum Aachen (bis 18. August 2024).

With Each One Another, Rachel Haidu argues that contemporary art can teach us how to understand ourselves as selves—how we come to feel oneness, to sense our own interiority, and to shift between the roles that connect us to strangers, those close to us, and past and future generations. Haidu looks to intergenerational pairings of artists to consider how three aesthetic vehicles––shape in painting, characters in film and video, and roles in dance––allow us to grasp selfhood. Better understandings of our selves, she argues, can drive our thinking about identity and subjecthood towards more generative ends.

Rachel Haidu is an art historian and critic and Associate Professor of Art History and Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester. She is the author of The Absence of Work: Marcel Broodthaers 1964-1976 (2010) and has written a number of essays, most recently on the work of James Coleman, Yvonne Rainer, Gerhard Richter and Sol LeWitt. Each One Another. The Self in Contemporary Art was published by the University of Chicago Press in July 2023.

The event is taking place on the occasion of the current exhibition Monument to My Paper Body by Ulrike Müller at Ludwig Forum Aachen (through August 18, 2024).

Enis Maci und Mazlum Nergiz lesen aus Karl May. Es geht um Winnetou und Old Shatterhand, um Hochstapler und Bilderstürmer und um zwei Freunde, die sich im Hasenbau verlieren.

Enis Maci wurde für ihre Theaterstücke und Essays mehrfach ausgezeichnet. Zuletzt erschienen: Eiscafé Europa (2018, edition suhrkamp 2726) und WUNDER (2021, Suhrkamp Theater). 

Mazlum Nergiz schreibt Prosa, Essays und Theaterstücke. Zuletzt erschien in Zusammenarbeit mit Leonie Ott die Graphic Novel Koma im MÄRZ Verlag (2023). 

Neben den zahlreichen Aktivitäten des Museums in den Bereichen Performance, Tanz, Musik und Film wird mit dem FORUM LITERATUR eine explizit literarische Konstante in das Programm des Ludwig Forum Aachen eingeführt. Als integraler Bestandteil der Programmatik des Hauses sind in regelmäßigen Abständen internationale Autor*innen eingeladen, ihre Texte im Rahmen von Lesungen, Performances, Workshops, Diskussionen und Gesprächen einem breiten Publikum vorzustellen. Die erste Ausgabe des FORUM LITERATUR, die von Januar bis Dezember 2024 im Ludwig Forum Aachen stattfindet, wurde gemeinsam von Eva Birkenstock (Direktorin, Ludwig Forum Aachen) und Hermann Müller (Literaturkurator, Berlin) konzipiert und wird großzügig von der Kunststiftung NRW unterstützt. Im Jahr 2024 wird die Aachener Buchhandlung Backhaus im Rahmen einer Kooperation mit dem FORUM LITERATUR Büchertische für die Leseabende der Reihe einrichten.

That the betrayal could soon reach us, and that it could be beautiful despite the odds.«

Enis Maci and Mazlum Nergiz read Karl May. The text is about Winnetou and Old Shatterhand, about impostors and iconoclasts and about two friends who get lost in a rabbit hole.

Enis Maci has received numerous awards for her plays and essays. Most recently she published: Ice Cream Parlour Europe (2018, edition suhrkamp 2726) and WONDER (2021, Suhrkamp Theater).

Mazlum Nergiz writes proses, essays and plays. Most recently he published the graphic novel Koma in collaboration with Leonie Ott (2023, MÄRZ publishers).

In addition to the museum’s numerous activities in the fields of performance, dance, music and film, the FORUM LITERATUR introduces an explicitly literary constant to the program of the Ludwig Forum Aachen. From now on, international authors are invited in regular intervals to share their work with a broad public in the context of readings, performances, workshops, and conversations. The first edition of the FORUM LITERATUR takes place at the Ludwig Forum Aachen from January to December 2024. It was conceived in close dialogue between Eva Birkenstock (Director, Ludwig Forum Aachen) and Hermann Müller (Literary Curator, Berlin) and is generously supported by the Kunststiftung NRW. In 2024, the Aachen-based Backhaus book store will set up book tables for the events as part of a cooperation with FORUM LITERATUR.
