fluent is pleased to present Poetics & politics of maintenance: Show me you are not the light I called to, but the darkness behind it, a group exhibition featuring works by Jack O’Brien, Estéfana Román Matesanz and Will Sheridan Jr. 

The undertitle of this exhibition takes its name from a verse in Rose, a poem by Louise Glück in which belonging and identity struggle at light, longing for a darker, freer regime. Maintenance has often been seen as this darker, back–staged dimension where the conditions for life to take place, are proccured. This exhibition dismantles such distinction, one that cuts across light and darkness, focusing on maintenance as a site that calls for time, dedication, closeness and attention, in which organic and inorganic bodies establish an intimate reciprocity. 

All the works in Poetics & politics of maintenance emerge from this field of structural sensuality: tightness, overlaps, cuts and frictions do not operate as inert services —as in the social language of usership and consumerism—, but as a complex set of affinities: this of moving and being moved. 

Poetics & politics of maintenance is dedicated to the memory of radical theorist Marina Vishmidt (1976–2024).

Ara Méndez Murillo (b. 1997, Cordoba, ES) lives and works in Brussels. She finished her Master in painting at La Cambre, Brussels, in 2022.
We did a first duo-exhibition with her work in our venue in Lovenjoel. This second show is titled ‘The other team’. In her words : ‘We divide the world into categories that we associate with symbols. Words like ‘left’, ‘centre’ or ‘right’; physical elements like a flag, serve to associate heterogeneous groups of people with concrete ideas, determining in a few seconds our position towards the other. To what extent do we consciously belong to our teams? If those in which I include myself are made up of complex and nuanced people, the other is almost always an abstract mass. It is easier to develop this kind of humiliating and puerile contempt against an unknown enemy.’
 
Maria Kley  (b.1981, Tokyo, JP) lives and works in Brussels. She studied fashion design at ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem (NL). Her artistic practice was preceded by several years of working in the fashion industry. From 2018-2019 Kley was a resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, Amsterdam.
‘The Animals’ is a sculptural series made with medical gauze and based on drawings by Maria Kley’s son Rune during the first COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. In Locomotion, these drawings were partially animated in a stop-motion projection inhabiting the gallery space. The ensemble is completed by the diptych Inhale, Exhale also composed with medical gauze and reminiscent of the conventional mouth masks so characteristic of the pandemic.

June Interjection: First Letter To My Mother by Taha Afefe

Taha Afefe (b. 1991) is a multidisciplinary artist from Palestine who graduated from the visual communication department at Wizo Haifa. He lives and creates in Haifa. In his art he searches for a sense of belonging and asks questions about identity in the state of refugees. Moving between visual communication and art, also between digital art and material use, he is interested in using typography and language as a central role in the construction of identity. Afefe has participated in a number of group exhibitions including “Black Box” at the Digital Art Museum in Holon, “Design Week” in the Netherlands, “Bezalel Gallery for Contemporary Art”, “Freshpaint art & design fair” in Tel Aviv, and many more.

Celebrating 10 years of The Interjection Calendar

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Maximillian William on the 13th of June to celebrate ten years of The Interjection Calendar, with a night of readings and performances from our guest editors Rhea Dillon and Hasti, alongside Oisín Roberts, Abiba Coulibaly and Pear Nuallak. The night was broadcast live on Montez Press Radio hosted in collaboration with The Shelf and Maximillian William and is available in our radio archive. 

The Interjection Calendar is an online and print project. Each month an artist or writer is commissioned to produce a new piece of work for release on our website. The PDF can be downloaded for free and there are 12 releases per year, in line with the calendar theme. At the end of the year the collection is published, demonstrating a diverse range of collaborations and experimental works.The Shelf is an effort to broaden the discourse emerging from the gallery by giving space to an ecology of independent publishers, publications, and editorial projects.

Sommerauftakt und Sammlungspräsentationen im Ludwig Forum

Wir laden Sie herzlich ein, am Sonntag, den 30.06.2024 ab 11 Uhr gemeinsam mit uns im Rahmen eines ganztägigen Programms den Sommerauftakt sowie die Eröffnung unserer neuen Sammlungspräsentation Auf dem Vulkan zu feiern. In diesem Jahr hat es sich das Ludwig Forum Aachen zum Ziel gesetzt, die hauseigenen Sammlungen verstärkt in den Fokus zu rücken. Neben dem öffentlich zugänglichen Langzeitforschungsprojekt Training the Archive, dem Restaurierungslabor zu der Arbeit Earth, Moon, Sun (1990) von Nam June Paik sowie den drei aktuellen Ausstellungen Ulrike Müller. Monument to My Paper Body, Fragmente einer Wirklichkeit, die einmal war und Terrestrische Perspektiven, die alle die Sammlungen des Ludwig Forum zum Ausgangspunkt nehmen, eröffnet nun mit Auf dem Vulkan die vierte Sammlungspräsentation im Haus.

Dies möchten wir zum Anlass nehmen, um alle Ausstellungen des Ludwig Forum mit einem vielfältigen und ganztägigen Programm zu feiern und vorzustellen und freuen uns darauf, diesen Tag gemeinsam mit Ihnen bei Kaffee, Kuchen, Kaltgetränken oder einem Imbiss im Ludwig Forum zu verbringen!

Für Paula Erstmann sind Nahrungsmittel ein künstlerisches Medium, das sie nutzt, um gemeinsam mit ihrem Publikum einen Dialog über ein nachhaltiges Leben anzuregen. Welche Geschichten erzählen uns die Lebensmittel, die wir essen – das Besteck und Geschirr, das Tischtuch, der Tisch, auf dem wir speisen? Welche kollektiven Erinnerungen werden geweckt?

Aus alter Wurzel neue Kraft
Künstler Tim Berresheim stellt in seinem Kurzvortrag und einem anschließenden Gespräch mit Heinrich Brötz (Beigeordneter der Stadt Aachen für Bildung, Jugend und Kultur) sein partizipatives Kunstprojekt vor. Gezeigt wird außerdem eine Arbeit, die im Rahmen des Projekts gemeinschaftlich mit Schüler*innen der Grundschule am Fischmarkt, des Kaiser-Karls-Gymnasiums sowie mit Teilnehmenden des College der VHS Aachen entstanden ist.

Antropothek
Die Arbeit Antropothek von Dan Perjovschi zeigt auf fünftausend gebündelt und geschichteten Zettelchen die Selbstbefragung des künstlerischen „Ich“. Für das Kunstwerk nutzte der rumänische Künstler unterschiedlichste, verfügbare Materialien und ging dabei möglichst erfinderisch und sparsam vor: Er zeichnete auf Notizzettel, Altpapier, auf Bücher, Zeitungen und Postkarten. Im offenen Workshop Kinder, Jugendliche und Erwachsene entsteht eine ganz eigene „Antropothek“ der Sammlungen des Ludwig Forum, die als Gemeinschaftskunstwerk aller Teilhnehmenden entstehen wird.

Summer kick-off and collection presentations at Ludwig Forum

We cordially invite you to join us for our summer kick-off and the opening of our new collection presentation Auf dem Vulkan [On the Vulcano] with an all-day program on Sunday, June 30, 2024 from 11 am. This year, Ludwig Forum Aachen is persuing the specific goal of placing greater emphasis on its own collections. In addition to the long-term research project Training the Archive, the restoration lab on the work Earth, Moon, Sun (1990) by Nam June Paik, and the three current exhibitions Ulrike Müller. Monument to My Paper Body, Fragments of a Reality That Once Was, and Terrestrial Perspectives, all of which take the own collections as their starting point, we will now open the fourth presentation with works from the collections titled Auf dem Vulkan [On the Vulcano].

We would like to take this opportunity to celebrate and present all exhibitions with a special program throughout the entire day. We look forward to spending this day together with you over coffee, cake, cold drinks or a snack at the Ludwig Forum!

Terrestrial Connections. Culinary field studies and interventions with Paula Erstmann
For Paula Erstmann, food is an artistic medium she uses to initiate dialogue with her audience. What stories do the food we eat tell us? And, indeed, what about the cutlery and dishes, the tablecloth and the table at which we eat? What collective memories are prompted?

Aus alter Wurzel neue Kraft
Artist Tim Berresheim will present his participatory art project in a short lecture followed by a discussion with Heinrich Brötz (Councillor for Cultural Affairs, City of Aachen), as well as a work which has been produced as part of the project in collaboration with pupils from Grundschule am Fischmarkt, Kaiser-Karls-Gymnasium and participants from the VHS-College Aachen. The lecture and the conversation will be held in English.

Antropothek
The work Antropothek by Dan Perjovschi shows the self-questioning of the artist on five thousand bundled and layered pieces of paper. The Romanian artist used a wide variety of available materials for the artwork and proceeded as inventively and sparingly as possible: He drew on notepads, scrap paper, books, newspapers and postcards. In the open workshop for children, teenagers, and adults, a very special “Antropothek” of the Ludwig Forum collections will be created as a joint work by all participants.

Constellations #6: Louis Emauré

40 ans après la démolition du “ranch” de Jean Smilowski, que reste-t-il du Robinson du Vieux-Lille ? Louis Émauré, Richard Pereira De Moura et Thomas Picavet ont conclu lors de leur résidence à l’ISELP leur enquête sur le logis disparu de cet autodidacte lillois.

Dans cet épisode, Louis Émauré revient sur leur travail et sur la toute nouvelle revue publiée dans la foulée, l’HAHA.

Zoom #24: Louis Pion, Le goûter au champ, 1891

Etrange chose que cette scène champêtre, apaisée, solaire, qui se présente à nous comme une grisaille ou une photographie. C’est pourtant bien une peinture, à l’huile, soigneusement exécutée par Louis Pion (1851-1934), à l’appui d’une riche documentation photographique.

Pour nous en parler, Magali Vangilbergen, historienne de l’art et conservatrice au musée des Beaux-Arts de Tournai.

fluent is pleased to present Poetics & politics of maintenance: Show me you are not the light I called to, but the darkness behind it, a group exhibition featuring works by Jack O’Brien, Estéfana Román Matesanz and Will Sheridan Jr. 

The undertitle of this exhibition takes its name from a verse in Rose, a poem by Louise Glück in which belonging and identity struggle at light, longing for a darker, freer regime. Maintenance has often been seen as this darker, back–staged dimension where the conditions for life to take place, are proccured. This exhibition dismantles such distinction, one that cuts across light and darkness, focusing on maintenance as a site that calls for time, dedication, closeness and attention, in which organic and inorganic bodies establish an intimate reciprocity. 

All the works in Poetics & politics of maintenance emerge from this field of structural sensuality: tightness, overlaps, cuts and frictions do not operate as inert services —as in the social language of usership and consumerism—, but as a complex set of affinities: this of moving and being moved. 

Poetics & politics of maintenance is dedicated to the memory of radical theorist Marina Vishmidt (1976–2024).

De Appel is verheugd je uit te nodigen voor Basma al-Sharifs eerste solotentoonstelling in Nederland aan te kondigen. Het werk van Basma doorkruist vele thema’s die verband houden met de huidige focus van de Appel: haar werk in video en film roept vragen op over (de representatie van) land, ballingschap en verbondenheid.
 
 
CAPITALSTILL

Basma’s werk vervaagt de grenzen tussen het persoonlijke en het politieke: ze gebruikt huiselijke omgevingen om te laten zien hoe politieke en historische verhalen het privéleven binnendringen en beïnvloeden. De manier van het ensceneren van de interieurs zorgt voor vertwijfeling over de persoonlijkheid van onze privé-omgevingen, en toont deze als vergankelijk. In haar werken wordt ‘’plaats’ gepresenteerd als de locatie van de films. Ze zijn doordrongen van een geschiedenis die ze probeert over te brengen door middel van montage en tekst; als kijker voel je een wantrouwen tegenover beelden van landschappen als een geërfd gegeven, en doordrongen van ideologie. Zoals de academicus Laura Marks schrijft over het werk van de kunstenaar: “De video (We Began by Measuring Distance) suggereert dat het een vergissing is om je te wenden tot beelden om je te troosten. Noch scherpe, fetisjistische beelden van een nu onbereikbaar verleden, noch haptische beelden die de kijker dichtbij halen. Waarheid kan niet in beelden liggen. Bovendien moeten we sceptisch zijn over informatie, want die is niet neutraal, maar een uitdrukking van machtsverhoudingen: “het meten van een appel blijkt een capitulatie”.”

Er worden drie installaties en een film gepresenteerd: Trompe l’œil (2016) bestaat uit een mise-en-scène, archieffoto’s en een video, die de vraag stellen wie het recht heeft om beelden te maken en te reproduceren; A Philistine (2019-2023), een werk rond een fictief verhaal geschreven door al-Sharif, volgt een treinreis terug in de tijd door de geschiedenis. Het verhaal maakt geografische grenzen ongedaan en zet aan tot nieuwe mogelijkheden voor Palestijnse toekomsten en verlangens; CAPITAL (2023), een korte film en fotoserie, onderzoekt op satirische wijze hoe stedelijke ontwikkeling en censuur met elkaar verweven zijn en een opmars van het fascisme in Egypte veroorzaken. Basma’s film Ouroboros (2017) wordt aan het einde van elke tentoonstellingsdag vertoond. Ouroboros is een langspeelfilm die opent met een eindeloze cyclus van vernietiging en wederopbouw in Gaza. De film, die afwisselt tussen een griezelige panoptische blik en weelderige 16mm-beelden, reist door 5 verschillende landschappen als een eerbetoon aan het belegerde gebied om voorbij de hopeloosheid een nieuwe hoop te bieden. Chinook, een inheemse taal die in de film gesproken wordt door kunstenaar-filmmaker Sky Hopinka, laat de twee volken en hun strijd voor bevrijding op subtiele en poëtische wijze in elkaar overlopen.

Als onderdeel van de opening zal al-Sharif het onderzoek van haar nieuwe werk, Morning Circle, delen door middel van een symposium en een workshop waarin kritisch wordt gekeken naar de manieren waarop de Westerse culturele hegemonie immigranten niet ziet als integraal onderdeel van hun bevolking, door een van de meest kwetsbare ruimtes, de kleuterschool, als voorbeeld te nemen als een ruimte van potentiële hervorming.

Vrijdag 28 juni, 16:00-18:00 uur: Morning Circle symposium
 Tijdens het symposium zal Basma al-Sharif haar eerdere werk presenteren, evenals haar onderzoek naar het nieuwe werk Morning Circle en hoe ze van plan is dit te ontwikkelen als film en langetermijnproject. Nadine Blankvoort zal haar onderzoek presenteren over integratiebeleid in Nederland en hoe de alledaagse praktijk van migrantenfamilies wordt gerepresenteerd, geproblematiseerd en gecontroleerd binnen kennisproductiepraktijken in dit land. Daarna gaan ze met elkaar en het publiek in discussie.

Het symposium vindt plaats op vrijdag 28 juni tussen 16:00 en 18:00 uur. Er is een beperkte capaciteit voor dit symposium. Je kunt een kaartje kopen via deze link.

Zaterdag 29 juni, 11:00-15:00 uur: Morning Circle workshop
 Door middel van lezingen, persoonlijke getuigenissen en groepsdiscussies is de workshop gericht op het definiëren van het onwaarneembare verlies dat gepaard gaat met verplaatsing en immigratie. Op basis van al-Sharifs onderzoek Morning Circle zal de kunstenaar materiaal delen over verlatingsangst, het concept van transculturatie en integratie. De workshop zal uitmonden in een collectieve schrijfoefening waarin we een manifest-achtig document opstellen dat onze (“migranten”-)aanwezigheid herbevestigt en definieert hoe we ons een andere toekomst voor de komende generaties kunnen voorstellen.

De voertaal van de workshop is Engels, en de samenkomst duurt van 11:00 tot 15:00 uur met pauzes. Voor een lichte veganistische lunch en snacks wordt gezorgd. Kinderen zijn ook welkom. Er zijn snacks en een screening van een uur, samengesteld door de kunstenaar en geschikt voor alle leeftijden.
 
 

Oproep voor deelnemers aan de workshop
Geïnteresseerden voor de Morning Circle workshop worden uitgenodigd om een e-mail te schrijven met als titel ‘Morning Circle Workshop’ naar (Maria Nolla)

– Achtergrond: Ben je een immigrant/migrant/vluchteling/1e, 2e of 3e generatie? En eventuele aanvullende achtergrond die je hierover wilt delen.
– Hoe lang woon je al in Nederland (of waar je ook woont).
– Een zin waarom dit onderwerp je interesseert.

Extra opmerking
Hoewel de voorkeur zal worden gegeven aan deelnemers met een migrantenachtergrond en/of die ouders zijn van kinderen in het openbare schoolsysteem, zijn geïnteresseerden die niet aan deze beschrijving voldoen ook welkom.

Das IKOB lädt herzlich ein zur Vernissage der Ausstellung EAT THE RAINBOW, eine von Kindern kuratierte Ausstellung mit Werken aus der IKOB-Sammlung.

Es erwartet Sie eine kunterbunte Galaxie mit 6 verschiedenen Farbplaneten. Außerdem: Regenbogensnacks und -getränke 🌈

In Zusammenarbeit mit Borderland Residencies schreibt das IKOB eine dreimonatige Künstler:innenresidenz in Eupen, Belgien (September – Dezember 2024) aus. Wir sind auf der Suche nach einem Künstler oder einer Künstlerin, die diese Zeit und diesen Raum nutzen wollen um ein Projekt zum Thema SUPERNATURAL zu entwickeln.

An einem sonnigen Ferienlager-Tag nimmt eine Gruppe von Kindern an einer Führung durch den Friedhof teil, als Kjartansson, geschminkt und in düsterem Kostüm, aus einer Krypta kommt und sich als verkörperter Tod ausgibt. Die Kinder schwanken zwischen Glauben und und Unglauben, und ergreifen gleichzeitig ohne Scheu diese außergewöhnliche Gelegenheit um wortwörtlich dem Tod in die Augen zu schauen.

OPEN CALL: Borderland Residencies 2024

We are excited to announce the Open Call for the 2024 cycle of Borderlands Residencies at Ludwig Forum Aachen. After past years’ successful first edition in collaboration with the program and our first much beloved resident Tini Aliman, we once again offer a three-month residency for internationally working visual artists or artist duos on the grounds of our museum. After past years successful first edition in collaboration with the program, we once again offer a three-month residency for internationally working visual artists or artist duos at the grounds of our museum. The scholarship is for artists interested in researching and working between and in dialogue to the Rhineland and the Belgian-Dutch artscene starting September 1, 2024. Beside a monthly stipend, the grand includes studio visits, opening and closing events and regular field trips with the other artists from the program in the EuRegion. 

Borderland Residencies is a support structure of annual art residencies in the Dutch-Belgium-German border area of the Lower Rhine region, Aachen, East Belgium and the Province of Limburg from September to the end of November. The program not only co-finances scholarships, short-term artistic interventions and co-productions, but on top offers a strong transnational network and support structure to each years’ scholarship holders through regular meetings and activities, by sharing its professional contacts and expertise and inquiring opportunities to present works throughout the EuRegion.

Ludwig Forum Aachen is an internationally renowned museum for contemporary art, set on the Western border of Germany. It is the home of significant parts of the famous Peter and Irene Ludwig Collection, that is distributed across over 20 museums globally. Beside works from post-war Germany and Western Europe, Ludwig Forum Aachen houses significant collections of US-American Pop Art, Hyperrealism, Pattern and Decoration and other artistic movements from the 1960s onwards. Furthermore, it is the home to contemporary art from China, to one of the most comprehensive collections of contemporary art from Cuba as well as to extensive collections of art from Soviet Russia, the former soviet republics, and from Central and Eastern Europe. Its transdisciplinary program combines solo and group exhibitions with research projects, conferences, screenings, music and dance festivals and other educational activities, to continuously expand and re-contextualize its collections in dialog with the public. On its grounds the museum contains 6000 square meters of exhibition space on four floors, a theatre, a sculpture garden, and a large art mediation workshop with printing and pottery facilities.

The museum is located in the city of Aachen, the westernmost city in Germany with a population of around 249,000. It borders Maastricht (NL) and Liège (BE) in the west, and Bonn and Cologne in the east. The 2024 cycle to Borderlands Residencies manifests the second time the museum collaborates with the network.


Ludwig Forum Aachen offers:

  • free accommodation in a furnished studio apartment (approx. 40 m2) with kitchenette and bathroom with direct access to an adjacent studio space on the first floor of the museum.
  • studio space (circa 100 m2) on the first floor of the museum
  • a monthly contribution for living expenses and material costs of of a total of EUR 1.500.- (incl VAT)
  • a coverage of travel expenses to and from Aachen up to EUR 1000.-
  • a final project / presentation / event at the museum
  • assistance in connecting with the local art scene, in organizing studio visits with professionals from the artworld and in carrying out artistic research projects
  • the participation in regular events at Ludwig Forum Aachen as well as within the institutional network of the Borderlands Residencies

We regret that the facilities for the residency program are not yet wheelchair accessible.
 

Eligibility

The residency is suitable for professional individual visual artists, artist duos or small groups working collaboratively. Artists who are based in Germany or are enrolled at a university at the time of application are not eligible to apply (excluding artists enrolled in PhD programs).

The criteria for awarding the residency is primarily the quality of the application and work submitted. The selected artist is requested to be present on site during the residency.


Application

Applicants are asked to submit including a short proposal for a context-specific project proposal (up to two pages), a CV (up to two pages), and a portfolio (PDF file, max. 10 MB, max. 10 A4 pages, if applicable with links to moving image and/or sound works).

The deadline for applications is Wednesday June 26 (23:59 pm CET). The documents can be submitted in German or English to

Why DIY? tekhnē journal #1 online now

The Q-O2 train has eventually slowed down of late, albeit we are now happy to supply you with exciting publication news and multiple updates from our different partners in the framework of our European project tekhnē, and 2 mid-June events.

Tekhnē is a collaborative project dedicated to exploring the emancipatory potential of technology in music and sound art. We are working on this alongside five other organizations: CTM Festival in Berlin, Germany; GMEA in Albi, France; Out.Ra in Barreiro, Portugal; Skanu Mesz in Riga, Latvia; and Trafo in Szczecin, Poland.
The most siginificant novelty is the publication of the first issue of the tekhnē journal. An issue titled Why DIY? compiled by Q-O2, outlining the field of DIY with its practices, cultures and politics. Besides this, on tekhne.website, you can find residency reports from GMEA, Q-O2 and TRAFO, interviews and videos from the Skaņu mežs festival, and radio pieces and the hacklab finale of CTM Festival.

Mid-june brings 2 gatherings at our HQ: Marnie Slater’s protest music selection as part of our Second Sundays series, and a post-residency presentation by tekhnē resident Paul Gründorfer.

tekhnē journal issue 1
Why DIY? – compiled by Q-O2

The first issue of the tekhnē online journal outlines the field of DIY with its practices, cultures and politics. A central observation of the tekhne project is that technological changes often go hand in hand with social changes, such as the emergence of electronic instruments that became musical instruments and changed not only who made the music, but also what we consider music to be. This first issue is compiled by Q-O2.

Featured writers and artists are VNS Matrix, Melinda Rackham, Sholto Dobie, Julia Eckhardt, Giuliano Obici, Indra Menus, Celeste Betancur, Gloria González Fuster, Eleni Ikoniadou, and Verena Kuni. They are discussing topics such as cyberfeminism, the historicity of technology in relation to instrument building, Brazilian Gambioluthiery, DIY cultures in an Indonesian village, the artistic use of programming languages, data protection in Europe, a science fiction governmental report about social media, and a glossary in progress based on the tekhnē website.

Marnie Slater

Marnie Slater (b. Aotearoa New Zealand) is a visual artist who lives in Brussels. Marnie’s work engages with multiple formats, including sculpture, collaboration, editing, performance, painting and installation. Like her solo work, Marnie’s long-term collaborations are led by queer and feminist politics and desires. She is co-curator of Buenos Tiempos, Int. and a team member of Mothers & Daughters – A Lesbian* and Trans* Bar*. Marnie is currently teaching on the AdMa program at Sint Lucas Antwerpen, where has just completed a three-year research trajectory on process tools for queer, feminist and anti-racist collaborative art making. Marnie is part of SPIN, a Brussels-based support and research platform for artists.

For this iteration of Second Sundays, Marnie will dive into the world of protest music, roaming across musical genres to share her perspective on the ways that artists and communities have created, interpreted and appropriated music as a tool of celebration and resistance.

Paul Gründorfer

Based on his research project “whisper”, which deals with sound phenomena and subliminal sound and voice experiences created by different levels of amplification within feedback systems and fragments of generative models, in this presentation Paul will play a set with some occurrences of abstract presence or “ghostly voice agents”.
