Isabel Fredeus (°1991, Kapellen) has her fourth exhibition in the gallery. She works with installations, sculptures, video and interventions. Fredeus is mainly interested in materials that are elastic, manipulative and flexible. Within her artistic practice she tries to follow signs, investigate the origin of their attraction and search for alternative meanings. For the past two years, she has been researching the sculptural qualities of mycelium in collaboration with microbiologist Elise Elsacker. Mycelium is the thread network of fungi. The exhibition ‘A fungal affair’ presents active installations, sculptures and drawings that aspire an alternative approach to classical sculpture. The exhibition visualizes an artistic dialogue Fredeus has initiated with this living organism.

Hilde Overbergh (°1964, Leuven) has her first solo exhibition in the gallery. With an infectious open-mindedness, she allows herself to be taken in tow by the remnants, fabrics, things and materials she encounters around her, as well as by the range of possible activities in which these attributes allow themselves to be assembled, connected, stacked, interwoven and strung together into multiform constellations. The title of Overbergh‘s solo exhibition, Cheer the Sum and Celebrate the Parts, refers to the playful aspect of this oeuvre, to the experimental pleasure with which very diverse objects, materials or actions are combined. And also to the magic of the moment in which an unforeseen encounter between thing, material or action takes place.

CORNERED

September 12,
⏤ November, 2024

Louise Lawler, Tribute (swiped), 2022 / 2023, dye sublimation print on museum box

Focusing on installations in museums, galleries, and private collections, Louise Lawler investigates how we, as viewers, perceive art. Perception often deviates from intention; context is all-important and is reexamined, illuminated, and rendered more complex on various levels. Divided between the ground floor and first floor, CORNERED features two new large-scale in situ vinyl installations that engage in dialogue with other recent photographs.

Louise Lawler photographs not only the artworks themselves but also their surrounding spaces and details, such as labels, furniture, and lighting. By doing so, she explores the relationship between art, exhibition spaces and viewer, and, in CORNERED, particularly within the context of the gallery. Lawler offers a profound reflection on the art world, challenging traditional notions of art perception for all everyone concerned.

Katinka Bock

Assemblée Anonyme

September 12,
⏤ November 2, 2024

Katinka Bock, Electric sisters 2, 2024, silver gelatin print

This exhibition can be seen as a large assemblage that reveals itself to the viewer in a fragmented and layered manner, like an urban landscape, featuring a series of black and white photographs, murals, and free-standing sculptures. The installation highlights her focus on the physical aspect of the body and on the inherent materiality of objects.

'Une assemblée’ ('an assembly') is a group of people gathered in the same place for a common purpose. Like all social constellations, they interact with each other and with time and space. Constructed from this principle, the exhibition can be perceived from any angle, with no definitive starting point, beginning, or end. Unclassifiable bronze and ceramic forms are suspended from the ceiling or scattered on the ground. Resembling apparent prostheses or parts of a construction kit, these minimal and enigmatic objects define the gallery space as a terrain with distinct focuses on the north, east, south, and west.

Additionally, the exhibition features a new photo series depicting electricity poles in an anonymous rural context, reflecting the lines of arbitrage and desire within our society. The physical edges of the exhibition space are marked by linear ceramic elements, where the sculptures blend into the murals, suggesting a new, oblique alphabet.

[nadine] SEPTEMBER 2024

[n0dine] CONGO MANIA 2.0 by Freddy Mutombo & Dolet Malalu
06/09 – 20/09/2024 — expo

[EN] Congo Mania is a project initiated by Freddy Mutombo (BE/DRC) where he freely deploys photography, video, sound and performance to approach the history and hidden layers between Congo and Belgium. This time, he works together with photographer Dolet Malalu (DRC) on an audiovisual installation. They depart from the urban context in their own habitats Brussels and Kinshasa, which they approach from a political and aesthetic point of view.

Vernissage “Ideal Waste” – Galerie Romero Paprocki, Paris

Ideal Waste

Opening on the 5th of September from 6pm to 9pm

Romero Paprocki Gallery

8 rue Sainte-Claude, Paris

We are pleased to invite you to the opening of our solo exhibition ‘Ideal Waste’ at the Romero Paprocki Gallery in Paris on Thursday 5 September from 6-9pm as part of Paris Design Week.

‘For Deborah Bowmann’s first exhibition at the Romero Paprocki gallery, the artist duo are presenting two new bodies of work: a series of wooden seats, presented in the first room – and a new series of monochrome assemblages, developed around the idea of the still life. The latter, presented mainly in the second room, is made from workshop waste and objects abandoned or bought at flea markets in Brussels. Between scraps and leftovers, these objects are selected for both their qualities and their defects. Their stylistic diversity reflects the duo’s sensitivity to the traces of our contemporary times, sketching out a personal archaeology.’

The exhibition runs until Saturday 21 September 2024.

Antonio Menchen RUN/RIBBON/RAIL

Saint-Martin Bookshop
presents

Friday September 13
From 6 to 9pm

ANTONIO MENCHEN
RUN/RIBBON/RAIL

Site-specific installation & Book launch
Curated by Erich Weiss

Under the title ‘Run/Ribbon/Rail’ ANTONIO MENCHEN presents on the top floor of Saint-Martin Bookshop a site specific mise-en-scene, strategically conceived to seduce us to discover some images selected from the artist’s personal archive.

Conscious of the specific aura of the space and its legendary status as a fashion designer’s workshop, the images forming part of the photographic installation refer in a certain way to the artificial, theatralized world of the fashion industry.

The objects represented on the selected pictures are often objects we identify as belonging to universes that fascinate the artist: cinema, light and sound equipments, machines or vintage luxury design.

With the support of the Spanish Embassy in Belgium and Acción Cultural Española AC/E

SEPTEMBER

ACTIVITEITEN

> Deze week

Vanaf vandaag tot en met 22 september presenteert Vaartstraat-resident Joseph Thabang Palframan ‘The Atomium and other lessons that came from Pointillism’, een set van vier nieuwe schilderijen, in een voordien ongebruikte opslagplaats van Studio Minckelers (J.P. Minckelersstraat 139).

> 12.09: Seasonal Opening Off the Grid

03.10: Sorana Munsya
14.11: Lochness (Luka Peeters)
16.12: Lichtekooi (Nadia Bijl & Pepa De Maesschalck)

RESIDENTEN

Isabel Fredeus (°1991, Kapellen) is showing her work for the fourth time in the gallery.

The title of Overbergh‘s solo exhibition, ‘Cheer the Sum and Celebrate the Parts’, refers to the playful aspect of this oeuvre, to the experimental pleasure with which very diverse objects, materials or actions are combined. And also to the magic of the moment in which an unforeseen encounter between thing, material or action takes place.

Q-O2 news :: La rentrée

workspace for experimental music and sound art

La Rentrée

September! Time to get the systems back up and running! To give those who were sound-deprived during the summer a relaunch (and of course also for those enthusiasts who never break the sound inflow), we are serving a varied menu to celebrate la rentrée:

Brussels local Laura Conant is hosting a post-residency presentation, sharing reflections on developing an audio plugin trying to challenge conventional, highly technical, and often exclusionary narratives when it comes to audio software and hardware. A week later, we invite her label MONTAGE for our Second Sundays listening session. Upcoming is also the presentation of Amar Ruiz who will share his research and reflections about Kadoudja, an Algerian female singer of the café-concerts in 19th century Paris. And subsequently, we’re launching new soundwalks by Margherita Brillada and Francesca Hawker, exploring the neighborhood surrounding our offices.

For those of you for whom these time-space-restricted happenings come too soon, we also would like to remind you that this year’s Oscillation ::: Materia Forma festival talks can still be listened to on our soundcloud. Aaand our yearly open call for the Showcase Emerging Sound in collaboration with STUK and Musica is online now – as is our call for interns for who wants to help organise the 2025 Oscillation festival edition.

Post-residency presentation
6 September – 18h  –  @ Q-O2 – free
Laura Conant

In this presentation, reflections will be shared on developing an audio plugin trying to challenge conventional, highly technical, and often exclusionary narratives when it comes to audio software and hardware. This tool is conceived not just as a sound manipulation device, but as an open-source, accessible environment that prioritizes user experience over technical precision, inviting musicians and developers alike to explore sound in a playful way. The software fosters a creative dialogue with the user, sharing control and inviting unexpected outcomes.
Laura’s residency has been organised in the framework of tekhne, funded by the European Union.

Post-residency presentation
13 September – 18h  –  @ Q-O2 – free
Amar Ruiz

How have Algerian artists been allowed to exist in France? How were their existences and practices framed? Through what lenses were they viewed?

This presentation will focus on the 19th century Algerian female singer Kadoudja, who performed in the Parisian café-concerts, an early form of music industry. Although she was celebrated during her career, she disappeared into obscurity after her death. The presentation will discuss the traces she left behind, her personal story, how orientalism shaped her music and how she was perceived by the public and in the press.

The work carried out during this residency is part of an ongoing artistic research project on Kadoudja.

Second Sundays #53
15 September – 17h (doors 16h30) –  @ Q-O2 – free
MONTAGE

Second Sundays is a monthly series initiated by Q-O2. Each session a new guest is invited to share an insight into their own listening, playing and speaking about a selection of sound and music that is important to their thinking or practice. The sessions try to put value on listening to recorded music in a social setting as a space for discussion. Each session is paired with a cocktail-of-the-month, as decided by the invited guest.

MONTAGE is a Brussels based collective and label focusing on experimental electronic music. MONTAGE derives its name from a love for what they call edited music: music that manages to surpass genre-boundaries for narrative structure and experiment.
Cocktail of the month: Blackberry Purple Haze.

Welkom terug in Z33

Vanaf 29.09

Twee nieuwe expo’s

Lucy McKenzie, Mural Proposal for Jeffrey Epstein’s New York Townhouse (Verfilming van American Psycho), 2024. Met dank aan de kunstenaar, Cabinet, Londen en Galerie Buchholz, Berlijn/Keulen/New York. Foto: Useful Art Services.

Openingsavond 28 september

Feest mee

Greylight Projects - platform for art & culture

Hey, hai, hoi,
We would like to invite you to the following:

exhibition “Where am I standing” / the What the flag?! Euregio edition at the Neuer Kunstverein Aachen (NAK)

This year’s What the Flag!? will kick off and will take place in the context of the Young Art Euregion exhibiton at  the NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein.

The flag has a long tradition of different uses and meanings. Flags are commonly used to transmit signals, to identify countries, regions or cities, or to visually demarcate a territory. Flags are also frequently used to represent political ideas and beliefs. The artists participating in the What the Flag!? project are asked to respond from their own work and vision of the medium flag. What the Flag!? is well-established in Heerlen, being organized each year by Greylight Projects. In the past few years the project was expanded once more, crossing borders and now including Very Contemporary’s art institutions as partners, each one presenting a flag, which was previously commissioned by another partner in the network and randomly assigned to yet another partner.

Now, shaking things up even more this year, all participating artists have to fulfil the rules of NAK and STAWAG’s Young Art Euregion series. Hence they cannot be older than 40 years and have to have a strong connection to the Euregion. Again, those artists are chosen by the Very Contemporary institutions, art organizations and museums in the Euregion. Whereas beforehand the flags would be directly exchanged between the institutions, NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein presents all flags grouped together in one exhibition, taking place at the Kunstverein.

After the exhibition at the NAK the flags will be traveling through the region. The artist’s flags will be handed over to the member institutions of the Very Contemporary network. Hence the exhibition gains a second life within the public space, connecting all of VC partners in the process, underlining the importance of art literally not knowing any boundaries or borders.

The Young Art Euregion series / What the Flag!? is supported by STAWAG‘s in order to support young artists in the Euregio. What the flag?! is a project initiated by Greylight Projects and hosted for three years by the Very Contemporary network.

Expositie: Kunstpodium-T: Jan Naaijkens Award winners

Artists Tianyi Zheng, Eliisa Loukola, Ida Leijting and Lena Longefay met in 2022 through the Apprentice/Master programme organised by Kunstpodium T. Kunstpodium T is a talent development organisation for beginning artists, located in Tilburg. Annually, they provide a programme in which budding artists are paired in groups with experienced artists. By creating a final exhibition, the artists can win the so-called ‘Jan Naaijkens Prize’, as part of which they get to put together an exhibition. This exhibition will be at Greylight Projects and is part of the Jan Naaijkens Prize they received for their work while participating in the Kunstpodium T programme.

Each of the artists will present recent works during the exhibition, from video to sculptures. These will show how, as a group, they carry out a dynamic investigation into intersections between nature, heritage, collectivity and friendship.

Their joint artist practice deals with issues of belonging and collaboration. That practice expresses itself incidentally as ‘the Department of Collective Collaboration’. This is a platform that seeks to challenge conventional perceptions of creative institutions and redefine the idea of collective creativity. They do this mainly from the brief in-between spaces created in the workplace.

Opening event

On 30 August, the opening event is at 18:00 for this exhibition, artist Lena Longefay will also host a small wine tasting at 19:00. Lena Longefay, a visual artist from the Beaujolais wine region in France, combines wine tasting with art in her performances. Her upcoming performance explores the tradition and reality of the Limburg wine landscape through wine tasting and artistic expressions.
