VERNISSAGE: 05. Oktober 2024, 19 Uhr
LAUFZEIT: 06. Oktober – 24. November 2024

Oktober problemlos verbinden.

BERTRAND CAVALIER
Permanent Concern

Book launch & Special Edition

Next to the book Permanent Concern, Bertrand Cavalier has created a unique edition featuring the 10 skipping rope photographs appearing in the book. Presented in an artist’s frame, each photograph captures a distinct phase of the movement, and together, they form the loop of the skipping rope sequence.
This edition is intended to be split among different owners, mirroring how the photographs in the book deconstruct the movement.

As Pedro Morais notes, “When he photographs a young woman skipping rope, he seems to be invoking the pictorial and architectural motif of the grid as much as the history of photography through chronophotography, but it is the possibility of failure, the cracks, and our capacity to get caught up in rationality that seems to interest him.”

New Residents

We are delighted to welcome our newest residents Eloise Sweetman, Lysann König and Sahar Salah!

Lysann König (1986, Zwickau) lives and works in Basel as an artist, musician and curator. She is part of the KASKO-Team since 2021, a project space for contemporary art, performance and mediation in Basel, and co-founder of ∑ SUMME, a networking platform and biennale event for artist-run-spaces and projectspaces in Basel. Since her bachelor‘s degree in 2012 at the Institut Kunst in Basel, she has been part of various collectives, including Dr. Kuckucks Labrador and who writes his_tory?.

Residency period: September 2024 – February 2025
Supported by Pro Helvetia

Eloise Sweetman is a Rotterdam-based curator originally from Western Australia. Her curatorial practice is guided by a philosophy of “lingering”—a deliberate, slow engagement with art that unfolds over time and space. This method is influenced by philosopher Byung-Chul Han’s concept of “de-distancing,” which refers to the process of getting closer to one’s surroundings and creating a sense of intimacy. In her exhibitions, Eloise seeks to create space for artists and audiences alike to engage deeply with the works on display, allowing meaning to remain open and fluid.

Additionally, we are excited to welcome Sahar Salah to the residency at ABA!

Sahar Salah worked at the Goethe-Institut Sudan for over ten years, most recently in the cultural programming department. After the outbreak of the war, she was forced to leave her home in Khartoum and has since been independently implementing various cultural projects, mainly in the north and northeast of the country.

Collaboration between ABA and Goethe Institut, supported by Goethe Institut.

The new residents recently presented their work during an ABA LAB session, giving us a glimpse into the exciting research they will focus on during their time here in Berlin.

EXHIBITION

Dasha Buben & John Irvin

UQBAR | 19–22 September

In the intersectional project Секретик (Little Secret), Belarusian artist Dasha Buben and American musician John Irvin explored themes of losing home, trauma, and memories. Neuroscientific research indicates that while memories are abstract and illusory, they can feel intensely real when associated with trauma. Traumatic memories trigger emotions as though one is still experiencing the trauma. These memories are often incomplete, lacking a clear narrative, and consist of fragmented sensations such as light, sounds, or smells.

As a political immigrant, Dasha has been separated from her family since the 2020 revolution in Belarus. This prolonged absence has resulted in a profound sense of losing her roots and foundation, leading to trauma and a quest for a new identity.

The ambient soundscape by John Irvin captures the essence of a summer day at a grandparent’s house—something eternally lost and irretrievable. It offers a glimpse into sounds that might or might not be real, reflecting the fragmented nature of memory and the deep sense of longing and loss.  Sounds of home and earlier inspirations become fainter as one gets older, and in the search for an identity rooted in the present, it’s tempting to cling to these illusions. This nostalgia is used as an anchor to tie the artist to a past, in order to make up for a lack of foundation in a new place, amongst strangers in an unfamiliar space. In this way, the soundscape is a security blanket of memories, keeping them safe from the world outside.

We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Damien, Roman, Celine, and Annette, who successfully completed their residencies with us in August. Their final presentations were a tremendous success, showcasing the incredible work they developed during their time at ABA. We wish them all the best in their future endeavours and hope to collaborate with each of them again soon.

Vernissage: INTO THE VOID
Leerstellen als Werkzeug künstlerischer Erkenntnis

Mit: Leo Vroegindeweij, Ton Slits, Nathalie Brans, Tinka Pittoors

Tinka Pittoors, 1tinkthink roadkill, 2019, mixed techniques on paper.

Mehr Informationen zu INTO THE VOID finden Sie hier.

IKOB-KONSULTATION

Oktober 2024, 12. November 2024, 10. Dezember 2024, 14. Januar 2025⁣

Soundwalk the extra mile

This might turn out to be a premature announcement of the start of a memorable Indian summer, but this Saturday’s weather looks ideal for trying out 2 new soundwalks created by Francesca Hawker and Margherita Brillada. Their walks can be experienced through the new soundwalking app Tracks, and will be launched upcoming Saturday from 14h to 18h. Stop by our HQ, meet Francesca and Margherita, and get all the necessary instructions to explore our neighbourhood. Bring your smartphone and headphones—if you don’t have a smartphone, please let us know via

And, if the forecast of the beautiful Indian summer doesn’t come true, or even if it does, there’s still more beauty below in this newsletter!

Margherita Brillada, Francesca Hawker

Duck Duck Eel by Francesca Hawker is an audio jaunt along the Brussels Canal that suggests 6 waterside listening breaks. The piece consists of 2 parts: part 1 can be done on foot, and part 2 is a bike / scooter ride, so bring a vehicle if you want to do both parts. The audio pieces feature readings of biographies of people who were or are into eels, collaged alongside recordings made in Flanders while visiting eel conservationists, as they counted and weighed hundreds of migrating eels. Underwater recordings of the canal also feature, which came out devoid of any eel noises. The frustration this inspires (and the question ‘where are the eels?’) has been shared by eel enthusiasts for millennia, who have never experienced the relief of witnessing the reproductive lives of the species they’re so into.

Whispers of the Unheard by Margherita Brillada offers a multi-faceted perspective on the community development of Molenbeek over the past years. By combining voices, field recordings, and found samples, listeners will gain insight into the neighbourhood’s history, structures, and community. Unveiling sounds of the past, listeners will be immersed in soundscapes that are now absent but once filled the neighbourhood. The audience will be guided by a mix of voices and testimonies from local residents and individuals involved in socio-cultural spaces, including Johan Leman, anthropologist and sociologist, president of the Brussels Immigration Museum; Fadel El Ouahabi working at De Vaartkapoen; and Père Etienne, priest at the Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church. The walk unfolds in a non-linear narrative, with voices at times overlapping, allowing listeners to experience their own version of the story through various narrative forms. September Interjection: KINOPOLITICS – Abiba Coulibaly

Abiba Coulibaly is a geographer and film curator with a particular interest in the unrealised militant potential of cinema, the intersection of ethics and aesthetics, and the visual narratives of Black, Muslim, and Francophone communities. Their projects Brixton Community Cinema and Atlas Cinema are experiments in what democratising access to cinema – as both space and medium – could look like.

Fall Season 2024

Spain.

www.fluentfluent.org

”my language has cracked
is a slow, creaking fire
deadens my eyes, in
high, contorted concern
fuses to protein and rent (1)”.

fluent is pleased to announce the fall 2024 programme.

Devoted to a dramaturgy —as the aesthetic frame we provide ourselves to try, rehearse, fail and desire– of maintenance, this season continues considering the material and relational conditions that determine the appearance of love as a structural matter. Spanning the time and space of the exhibition format, experimental pedagogies and text–centered assemblies, the coming months posit practices that employ a grammar of dramaturgy at once hopeful, haptic, and politically eloquent.

PRAXIS II:
Announcing participants.
The programme begins on September 18th.

How can a transitory, moving community gathered in a small Atlantic city contribute a shift in the social landscape within and beyond its direct context?

Providing an inspiring source of exchange, energy and engaged debate, we are pleased to announce the participants in the second edition of PRAXIS. The group composition has been carefully drafted to structure a diverse tapestry of practitioners –ranging from artists, choreographers, poets, geographers, curators, editors, activists, writers and trans–disciplinary makers–. The programme responds to the diverse realities, temporalities and social landscapes cutting across our shared worlds and futures. Aiming to unfold a common sense of affection, care and co–responsibility, the programme is both inclusive and responsive to wide–ranging profiles, attentive to transgenerational, professional and live backgrounds resonating in unison and including: Katherine Agard (Trinidad & Tobago, 1990), Gabi Aparicio (Santander, 2000), Che Applewhaite (UK, 1998), Miren Barrena (Donostia, San Sebastián, 1996), Toni Böckle (Germany, 1997), María Cuesta (Santander, 1999), Diana de la Cruz (Santander, 1991), Hampus Hoh (Sweden), Mina Heydari–Waite (UK, 1994), jœëlla kálâlã (Democratic Republic of Congo), Jean–François Krebs, Florine Lindner (Germany, 1987), Camila Malenchini (Argentina, 1990), Dani Méndez (Santander, 1996), Gerardo Rocha (México, 1992), Jara Roset (Madrid, 1998), Victor Ruiz Colomer (Barcelona, 1993), Kaiya Waerea (Aotoerea/New Zealand, 1996), Calvin Walds (EEUU,1990) and Amber Wright (Anaiwan/Australia, 1987).
PRAXIS is an intensive study programme running from September to December, 2024, under the directorship of Anne Boyer, Fred Moten & Stefano Harney, Andrea Rodrigo and Michael Marder. Reacting to current conditions of great narrative anxiety where detachment and hyper–mediation have replaced narrative structures; emotion and affectivity are at the forefront of this new phase of neoliberalism. Considering these challenges and the subsequent role of the arts and the humanities, PRAXIS aims to develop socially transformative prospects that repair the social realm from reduced listening and re–articulate aesthetics, and making processes.

Reza Abdoh: Quotations from a Ruined City
Exhibition opening: Thursday, October 3th
October 4th –– December 30th

Quotations from a Ruined City, the first presentation in Spain on the work of late Iranian theater director, Reza Abdoh (1963–1995) is a case–study exhibition taking his last produced play to reflect on the violent political realities of his (and our) time. Over a career that spanned twelve years, Abdoh developed an aesthetic grammar where mythology, music clips, fairy tales, BDSM, rave culture, religion and avant–garde theatre merged, to speak eloquently about human degradation, genocidal politics (from the AIDS crisis to supremacism and war), structural segregation, oppression, racism and the institutions’ refusal to diversity.

On the week of its premiere at the L.A. festival, Quotations from a Ruined City was described as ”a violent attack on violence. A sort of apocalyptic follies, evening of song, dance, poetry, nudity and torture set in a world” that is still dying today.
Just before his death, Abdoh gave instructions that his plays never be performed again, thus making his work only available through videos, photographs, texts and other kind of documentation materials. On the ocassion of this exhibition, fluent will launch a publication centered on the exhibition’s core and original play Quotations from a Ruined City.
We are grateful to Daniel Mufson, whose commitment to Reza’s work and constant efforts in promoting and pollinating it, are at the core of this project.

Un léxico molecular
Ongoing

In parallel to fluent’s exhibition programme, this autumn fluent books will host across multiple Wednesdays, Un léxico molecular, a reading group in which couple of texts, selected in collaboration with the exhibited artists, expand the exhibition programme. This pairing triggers echoes, frictions and connections, shaping a moment of encounter and discursive re-signification.

___________________________________________________________________________

Isabel Fredeus (°1991, Kapellen) has her fourth exhibition in the gallery. She works with installations, sculptures, video and interventions. Fredeus is mainly interested in materials that are elastic, manipulative and flexible. Within her artistic practice she tries to follow signs, investigate the origin of their attraction and search for alternative meanings. For the past two years, she has been researching the sculptural qualities of mycelium in collaboration with microbiologist Elise Elsacker. Mycelium is the thread network of fungi. The exhibition ‘A fungal affair’ presents active installations, sculptures and drawings that aspire an alternative approach to classical sculpture. The exhibition visualizes an artistic dialogue Fredeus has initiated with this living organism.

Hilde Overbergh (°1964, Leuven) has her first solo exhibition in the gallery. With an infectious open-mindedness, she allows herself to be taken in tow by the remnants, fabrics, things and materials she encounters around her, as well as by the range of possible activities in which these attributes allow themselves to be assembled, connected, stacked, interwoven and strung together into multiform constellations. The title of Overbergh‘s solo exhibition, Cheer the Sum and Celebrate the Parts, refers to the playful aspect of this oeuvre, to the experimental pleasure with which very diverse objects, materials or actions are combined. And also to the magic of the moment in which an unforeseen encounter between thing, material or action takes place.

Spaziergang durch Manheim mit Silke Schatz
Sonntag, 22.09.2024, 14 Uhr

Walk through Manheim with Silke Schatz
Sunday, September 22, 2024, 2 pm

As part of the exhibition program of Terrestrial Perspectives, artist Silke Schatz will guide a walk through Manheim. Schatz explores the transformation processes in the Rhenish coalmining area, accompanying in particular the disappearance of Manheim, the last village according to the plans of the NRW state government and the energy company RWE, which is to be demolished for lignite mining (as of July 2024). As part of the project “manheim-calling.org,” Schatz began compiling an online index of the plants in this area in 2021. With the intention to study and preserve the plants growing there, Schatz relocates them to local cultural centers. The relationship between culture and nature is the focus of her research. During her walks and field studies in the abandoned village and its gardens, the artist also collects and observes the history and lives of the people and plants who once lived in Manheim, tracing the disappearance of human civilization and taking a look at the emerging natural vegetation.

Please register by email to Details on the walk:
Individual arrival. Meeting point: Manheim market square, near the church. The walk takes about 3 hours. Cake and coffee will be served in the afternoon. Please make sure to bring enough drinks for the walk. Suitable clothing includes rain or sun protection (headgear), good shoes and long pants.

Uitnodiging: Min Oh, Conversation Dance

Conversation Dance Website kopieren small

Closing performance: Simultaneity, Conference

Vernissage: INTO THE VOID

Solo Presentation & Artist Talk: ‘God Save the Queers’ – Denys Shantar

During his three-month residency at Off the Grid, artist and curator Denys Shantar continued his ongoing research ‘God Save the Queers’ and collected both on and offline religious iconography, stories and ephemera as sources of inspiration. The presentation features amongst others a new monumental tapestry depicting St. Gall and St. John the Russian. By combining these seemingly random saints, the artist aims at creating his own iconography and tell a personal queer story of immigration. Denys will open up on his research during a talk in the context of Let’s Talk Leuven, a platform for artist talks co-organized by STUK, M Leuven, SLAC and Cas-co. After the opening, the presentation stays on view until the 22nd of September.

Inauguration Flag #7: ‘Huriya, Huriya, Huriya, Huriya’ by Hussein Shikha & Yasmin Reggad

Hussein Shikha is a multidisciplinary artist, writer and graphic designer, working with traditional motifs and the rich heritage of Southern Iraqi carpet-making and textile, often at the edge of art and design. Hussein takes this personal experience of navigating displacement and diasporic cultural identity as a starting point. Invited to conceive a flag for 019 and Cas-co, the piece blends the history of early computer technology and pixels with carpet-making, Huriya meaning freedom in arabic. At 20pm, and departing from Cas-co, a Performative Guided Tour by curator and performer Yasmina Reggad will lead us towards the hoisting of the flag. Editions by Hussein will be sold to raise funds for a Palestinian family the artists are in touch with.

Collective Visit of ‘The Atomium and other lessons that came from Pointillism’ by Joseph Thabang Palframan

Vaartstraat resident Joseph Thabang Palframan presents ‘The Atomium and other lessons that came from pointillism’, a set of four new paintings, in a previously unused storage space of Studio Minckelers (J.P. Minckelersstraat 139). The works play with the expectations and projections of (historical) memory, the tension between tourism and migration, and forms of affective nationalism.

Soft launch ‘How to Build a House: Windows and Doors’ by collective-in-residence ( ) in the Mountain

The evening proceeds with a performative foreshadowing of the programme ‘How to Build a House: Windows and Doors by ( ) in the Mountain, a collective of eight recently graduated artists from various Dutch art academies. As a group of internationals, their practice explores the reality of working as an artist in a country away from. How to find comfort in each other’s company, and create the conditions allowing for a common creative process to arise, are among their key commitments. In the context of their residency at Off the Grid, they depart from the question:  when we look outside the structure of a home, what are we looking for?

Introduction to the Masterclass ‘BÁRBARA and the ancient stories of the future’ by Sadrie & Désirée 0100

Last but not least, the evening will culminate with a quirky and performative introduction to a masterclass developed by artist duo Sadrie & Désirée 0100. This performative moment will give a first insight to the masterclass, which will fully expand on October 9th, inviting participants to join and explore alternative ways of storytelling together.

Opening Thursday September 12, from 6pm to 9pm
Exhibition on until November 9, 2024.

…this exhibition, MMCO and myself had always wanted to make it happen, we were talking about it often and finally we didn’t have the time.
Both artist brothers, together… How to imagine this exhibition today, now that he’s gone?

To not betray Marc or to betray him a tiny bit? To not handle his images, his words, or maybe to do so? And above all, to try to preserve his humor, his poetics, his mystery.  To play, indeed! And myself, how can I co-exist?

Finally, this exhibition ended up existing in 2018. At the same time, O.V. offered me to do something with the two brothers, MMCO+JFO… Time passed, then we talked about it again, and here we are, Marc’s series “ÊTRE”, …and me, ÊTRE” around “ÊTRE”… “L’expo qui n’a jamais eu lieu (suite)”

Jean-François Octave 2018-2024

– – –

JFO (Jean-François Octave) was born in 1955 in Arlon. He lives and works in Brussels.
He is a designer, painter and architect. After studying architecture at the Institut Saint-Luc and then at La Cambre, he began working for the magazine Soldes – Fin de serie, before making covers for Les Disques du Crépuscule / Factory Benelux and posters for Plan K concerts (Joy Division, Young Marble Giants, A Certain ratio, Tuxedomoon).
He started painting in the 1980s and became a figure of the belgian punk scene with his publications, fanzines and object-books.
He represented Belgium at the Venice Biennale in 1986. Since then he was also drawn to art in the public space and scenography.

MMCO (Marc Octave) was born in 1948 in Arlon and died in 2002 in Brussels. A discreet designer, even secret in certain respects, his very life seems an illustration of the life of an artist even though from the dawn of his career he enjoyed recognition and constant attention from the Belgian contemporary art world. This is evidenced by his numerous exhibitions, his publications and the impressive number of pieces acquired by the Ministry of the French Community, as well as by the National Bank, among others.
Friend of the painters Filip Denis and Walter Swennen, who all were friends with Marcel Broodthaers during their apprenticeship years, MMCO traced his path, always truant, between popular imagery and unbridled poetry.

ongoing-> expositie “Where am I standing” / the What the flag?! Euregio edition at the Neuer Kunstverein Aachen (NAK)

This year’s What the Flag!? will kick off and will take place in the context of the Young Art Euregion exhibiton at  the NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein.

The flag has a long tradition of different uses and meanings. Flags are commonly used to transmit signals, to identify countries, regions or cities, or to visually demarcate a territory. Flags are also frequently used to represent political ideas and beliefs. The artists participating in the What the Flag!? project are asked to respond from their own work and vision of the medium flag. What the Flag!? is well-established in Heerlen, being organized each year by Greylight Projects. In the past few years the project was expanded once more, crossing borders and now including Very Contemporary’s art institutions as partners, each one presenting a flag, which was previously commissioned by another partner in the network and randomly assigned to yet another partner.

Now, shaking things up even more this year, all participating artists have to fulfil the rules of NAK and STAWAG’s Young Art Euregion series. Hence they cannot be older than 40 years and have to have a strong connection to the Euregion. Again, those artists are chosen by the Very Contemporary institutions, art organizations and museums in the Euregion. Whereas beforehand the flags would be directly exchanged between the institutions, NAK Neuer Aachener Kunstverein presents all flags grouped together in one exhibition, taking place at the Kunstverein.

After the exhibition at the NAK the flags will be traveling through the region. The artist’s flags will be handed over to the member institutions of the Very Contemporary network. Hence the exhibition gains a second life within the public space, connecting all of VC partners in the process, underlining the importance of art literally not knowing any boundaries or borders.

The Young Art Euregion series / What the Flag!? is supported by STAWAG‘s in order to support young artists in the Euregio. What the flag?! is a project initiated by Greylight Projects and hosted for three years by the Very Contemporary network.

ongoing-> expositie: Living apart togther

Artists Tianyi Zheng, Eliisa Loukola, Ida Leijting and Lena Longefay met in 2022 through the Apprentice/Master programme organised by Kunstpodium T. Kunstpodium T is a talent development organisation for beginning artists, located in Tilburg. Annually, they provide a programme in which budding artists are paired in groups with experienced artists. By creating a final exhibition, the artists can win the so-called ‘Jan Naaijkens Prize’, as part of which they get to put together an exhibition. This exhibition will be at Greylight Projects and is part of the Jan Naaijkens Prize they received for their work while participating in the Kunstpodium T programme.

Each of the artists will present recent works during the exhibition, from video to sculptures. These will show how, as a group, they carry out a dynamic investigation into intersections between nature, heritage, collectivity and friendship.

Their joint artist practice deals with issues of belonging and collaboration. That practice expresses itself incidentally as ‘the Department of Collective Collaboration’. This is a platform that seeks to challenge conventional perceptions of creative institutions and redefine the idea of collective creativity. They do this mainly from the brief in-between spaces created in the workplace.

Opening event

On 30 August, the opening event is at 18:00 for this exhibition, artist Lena Longefay will also host a small wine tasting at 19:00. Lena Longefay, a visual artist from the Beaujolais wine region in France, combines wine tasting with art in her performances. Her upcoming performance explores the tradition and reality of the Limburg wine landscape through wine tasting and artistic expressions.
