EXHIBITION & PROGRAM
Ruins of Belarus
Uladzimir Hramovich with the VEHA Archive
UQBAR | 9–28 November
In his artistic work, Uladzimir Hramovich focuses on political movements and architecture in relation to their inherent history. His work is based on documentary material and complemented by subjective narratives.
Forced into exile, the Berlin-based artist is now cut off from the sources in Belarus. For the VEHA archive, Hramovich bought photographs on eBay of Belarusian monuments and their deterioration during the German occupation. In the exhibition Ruins of Belarus, he combines these images with other objects and attributes of power claimed by the current regime in Belarus. By manipulating them, Hramovich creates a critical reinterpretation and offers an alternative perspective to the hegemonic, centralized historiography
After the exhibition, the images will be integrated into the collection of the independent VEHA archive. In the face of the horrific destruction in the neighbouring country, VEHA focuses on the destroyed architecture, villages and cities in Belarus that have fallen victim to war, modernisation, repression and the contempt of the current regime.
Opening: 8 November at 19:00 On view: 9–28 November, 12:00–18:00
Uladzimir Hramovich sees materials such as concrete, granite, metal, paper and paint not just as surfaces on which history leaves its mark, but as agents that themselves deform history. His artistic practice draws on the history of modernist art and architecture, the history of ideology and political [removed];
Curator: Kathrina von Hagenow Katharina von Hagenow is a Berlin-based artist and curator. Together with Uladzimir Hramovich, she curated the exhibition “manchmal halte ich mich an der luft fest” Belarusian artists in exile at the Galerie im Körnerpark. Her curatorial practice is politically motivated and characterised by an extensive interest in artistic-educational practices.
Based on the VEHA archive.

MISS READ: The Berlin Art Bookfair & Festival 2024
Haus der Kulturen der Welt | 11–13 October
We were happy to, once again, participate in MISS READ – The Berlin Art Bookfair – hosting over 340 exhibitors from more than 50 countries consolidating its position as one of the largest and most diverse global art book fairs with an unparalleled breadth of international representation.
Along we brought publications form current and past residents and here are a few highlights from our selection:
SHIMMER, A MANUAL OF UNDOING
Eloise Sweetman & Jason Hendrik Hansma
In SHIMMER, A MANUAL OF UNDOING we present a series of hand-developed black and white medium format photos of Shimmer’s exhibitions-in-progress. The photographs were taken during the unpacking, the unwrapping, the decision-making, depicting the often-invisible labor of the art worker. Since 2018 we have been undecided on how to make room for these images, which seem to not fit into conventional forms of contemporary art presentation and documentation. They arrive long after the moment of their generation, finally finding their home in this book’s unsettled and unbound pages. It is in the lag–the linger–that we define as our studio method.
I Hope This Message Finds You Well is a podcast on curating, hosted by Kris Dittel and Eloise Sweetman.
Toffe Peren | Tolle Knolle | Quirky Carrots
A collaborative project by Annette Behrens & Carina Hesper
Toffe Peren The Children’s Book is a cardboard book for the very young: marvel, learn to count, and unleash your imagination! The stars in this book are the octopus-lemon, the bell pepper monster, the cucumber sausage – and many more! Have you ever seen them in real life? Aren’t they extraordinary and lovable? Tolle Knolle is an ode to the quirky tomato, the joyful eggplant and the fig that is a snail. Despite all the striking and often playful shapes, it’s about a serious topic: still, about 30% of our food worldwide is wasted. Part of that is the fruit and vegetables that are sorted out and often destroyed due to unusual shapes, sizes, or colors.
