16:30_________________________FILM MICHAEL SNOW: WAVELENGTH
This 4th edition kicks off with a screening of Michael Snow’s legendary film Wavelength (1967) in the Bonaparte theater room, the same location where it won the Grand Prix of the Fourth International EXPRMNTL Film Festival in 1967. Described as a metaphor for the “nervous system”, Wavelength is considered a masterful exploration of the nature of perception.

In the Magritte Room – another emblematic space of the Casino surrounded by hybrid characters from René Magritte’s frescoes – Paris-based Greek artist Lenio Kaklea presents a solo piece driven by a study of the sailor, crossing sources from painting, poetry, pop culture, and queer repertoires.

In the hall, a series of photographs by Étienne Bernard of the 5th and final edition of the EXPRMNTL festival – organized in 1974 in the Knokke Casino – offers a glimpse into the history of experimental film and testify to the lively and contrasting atmosphere of this extraordinary event, where internationally renowned artists, local figures, filmmakers and film buffs came together.

Later in the evening, former WIELS resident Margaux Schwarz hosts an imageless new play where the artist pursues her interest in the notion of backstage by foreseeing discreet or even invisible service and control [removed];Spectators, comfortably seated in velvet chairs, will adopt the role of sound voyeurs, orienting themselves amidst this off-screen drama.
