Through the works of Swiss artists Nina Birri and Yaron Maïm, we’ll engage with the processes of weaving, suturing, and repairing in fashion and art as resistance to the throw-away and extractivist culture and as a form of knowledge [removed];
Fashion shares with art recalcitrance to be reduced to a cultural superstructure that is merely aesthetic and intrinsically individualistic. Sustainable fashion internalizes the ethics of care and privileges relations within communities, work collectives, and an interconnected world. Swiss designer Nina Birri will present her new brand “Bitter” and exhibit items from her newest collection. In her practice, she poses questions about materials, norms, and affects. The public is invited to be a part of a transformative mending process in her workshop “Garment Kintsugi.”
Multimedia artist Yaron Maïmwill introduce their ongoing research Looping. Crochet is a mermaid’s love/programming language, which combines performance, textile, and digital art. Besides the performance with elements of 3D animation and crochet sessions, they will present books related to their work, art, and utilitarian objects created with recycled materials, and talk about the relation between crocheted corals and hyperbolic geometry.

Workshop:
Garment Kintsugi

The guests of the workshop, by contemplating a rupture in dear garments, will examine the damages that have occurred to communities, memories, societies, cultures and interpersonal relations due to everyday consumption patterns and practices.
The artists will introduce different techniques of visible suturing: Besides the utilitarian function, a visible threat bears witness to the care required to mend a piece of garment. Is the repair process more than the return to the original state or erasure of a defect, or is it the creation of something new and more valuable?

love/programming language

The performance of Yaron Maïm interweaves hand-made craft and 3D simulation as “temperamental materials” (Leski, 2015) that activate new methodological approaches and modify one’s behaviour as a human in relationships with others. All while making art and addressing its context of production and distribution, Maïm keeps on questioning if art can exist autonomously from the market by not reproducing or being enmeshed in the structures it critiques.
