GET TO KNOW SHIMABUKU

Japanese artist Shimabuku takes us on a journey of the imagination using the stories, music, myths and rituals of the places he has visited. When he was young, Shimabuku couldn’t decide whether to become a poet or a tourist guide. ‘By becoming an artist’ he said ‘I have possibly acheived both.’

Instrumental exhibition highlights an important recurring element in Shimabuku’s work: music. In this newsletter, with an interview with the artist and more, you will learn about his (musical) language.

BRAZILIAN INFLUENCES

Shimabuku has a particular connection with [removed]; He often collaborates with Brazilian producer, singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Kassin. The short film I’m Wishing was made in collaboration with Kassin and his Brazilian colleague Moreno Veloso during their visit to Okinawa in 2007.
LISTEN HERE TO A FRAGMENT

In 2015, during the Havana Biennale, Shimabuku discovered a water leak in the exhibition space. Artists asked if the leak could be fixed, the curators replied, “You want to stop the water leaking? Impossible, this is Cuba!”

Shimabuku placed thin cans of different sizes under the leaking pipes and noticed that the rhythm of the falling drops of water sounded like a samba. He took the film of his installation to Rio, where he asked Kassin and Arto Lindsay to remix his improvised soundtrack.

“Art is helpful for making people laugh, opening the mind and the senses.”
