Platform

At the site of the Lage Fronten park, Paul Devens constructed a low stage or platform over the remains of the tracks of railway station Boschpoort, scarcely visible trough the vegetation grow-over. The audience is allowed to walk over, sit at, or lay down on it. Only then the work is revealed fully; in this stage surface, cutaway floor plans are visible as a mean to indicate several spaces in a two dimensional way. These plans refer to building rules from regulation, legislation or politics, directing minimal dimensions for a living condition. Via the cutaways, the acoustic behaviour for each separate room becomes audible and captures the listener in its sonic environment. These acoustics emerge, caused by a soundscape, recorded from a variety of European cities. In these, a focus is upon the sounds of people travelling.

Over de toenmalige sporen van het Maastrichtse station Boschpoort, nog ternauwernood zichtbaar in de ruige begroeiing van de Lage Fronten, heeft Paul Devens een laag podium gebouwd. De bezoeker mag hier overheen lopen, erop zitten of liggen. Pas dan ontvouwd zich het werk ten volle; in de vloer van dit podium zijn sleuven uitgezaagd als summiere, tweedimensionale aanduidingen van verschillende ruimten. Deze refereren aan voorschriften uit bouwverordeningen, wetgeving en politiek, waarin bepaald wordt wat de meest minimale afmeting van een leefruimte zou moeten zijn. Via de sleuven in het platte vlak wordt de akoestiek van de kamers hoorbaar, en vangt de bezoeker in zijn virtuele geluidsbeeld. De akoestiek wordt aangespeeld door een soundscape op basis van opnamen uit verschillende Europese steden. Deze registreerden de klanken van reizende mensen.
