Het oeuvre van Emilie Pitoiset (FR, 1980) ontvouwt zichzelf met veel precisie en eenduidigheid door een serie van tegenstellingen, die de centrale thema’s in haar werk vormen. Tegenstellingen als optellen en aftrekken, vallen en balanceren, documentaires en fictie, symmetrie en herhaling, aantrekkingskracht en afstoting komen samen. Elk werk is het resultaat van een verfijnde mix van tegengestelde elementen die gezamenlijk een beeld met een specifieke spanning genereren.

In tegenstelling tot sommige van haar tijdgenoten, reproduceert Emilie Pitoiset geen vormen uit de kunstgeschiedenis. Zij verwerkt fragmenten en haalt ze los van hun oorspronkelijke context om ze vervolgens in een nieuwe context te plaatsen. Inspiratie haalt ze uit een grote diversiteit van bronnen, van hoge cultuur tot de popcultuur, zoals Nouvelle Vague, cinema, literatuur en Nouveau Roman, maar ook uit documentaires, de geschiedenis of alledaagse beelden en objecten. Specifieke aandacht gaat er uit naar archieven, die geherinterpreteerd en verheven worden tot kunst, zodat ze reflecteren aan de vraag van de filosoof Jacques Rancière: Wat is kunst?

Emilie Pitoiset is als winnares van de Audi Talents Award Art Contemporain 2010 te zien op FIAC in het Grand Palais (Parijs). In de komende jaren gaat FLACC een aantal jonge en beloftevolle kunstenaars meerjarig ondersteunen, waarbij de focus ligt op talentontwikkeling en het creëren van kansen. De ondersteuning zal bestaan uit het opzetten van één of meerdere projecten, de netwerkvergroting en een verdieping van het theoretisch kader van de kunstenaar.

De eerste kunstenaar die FLACC in dit kader gaat ondersteunen is Renato Nicolodi (BE, 1980). Zijn beeldend werk wordt gekenmerkt door het gebruik van archetypische vormentaal die resulteert in betonnen architectonische sculpturen op schaal, fictief gesimuleerde beelden en acryltekeningen die een blik werpen op het verleden en het heden in relatie tot tijd en ruimte. De toeschouwer wordt uitgenodigd om vanuit het collectief geheugen de leegte, die soms wordt voorgesteld als een zwarte, ontoereikende ruimte, mentaal te betreden en de context te trachten achterhalen. FLACC heeft Renato Nicolodi uitgenodigd tot reflectie over zijn tot op heden afgelegd artistiek parcours. De bedoeling is een theoretisch kader te vormen omtrent de talrijke cultuurhistorische referenties en verwijzingen die binnen zijn werk tot stand komen. FLACC gaat samen met de kunstenaar en met de steun van ‘Stroom’, een ontwikkelingsbeurs voor talentontwikkeling van de provincie Limburg, op zoek naar een coachteam, bestaande uit theoretici, architecten en kunstenaars, die nauw betrokken worden bij het onderzoek. Het resultaat van dit onderzoek, dat zich vooral zal manifesteren doorheen gesprekken en het uitwisselen en schrijven van tekstmateriaal, is een blijvend en gestructureerd fundament, waarop de kunstenaar in de toekomst kan verder bouwen.

Wapke Feenstra – Bewegend Landschap

De presentatie van Bewegend Landschap in het stadhuis van Borgloon is verlengd tot 31 oktober 2011. Het project is op uitnodiging van FLACC gerealiseerd en maakt deel uit van het Z-OUT-project PIT.

Rudi Knoops – Dioramatized #2

Als onderdeel van de tentoonstelling Goddelijke Klanken toont het Museum M de installatie Dioramatized #2, een beeld- en klankinstallatie van Rudi Knoops. De installatie is met hulp van FLACC geproduceerd. De tentoonstelling is tot 27 november 2011 te bezoeken.

Hedwig Brouckaert – Re/Pro/ducing Complexity

In Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens opent op 23 oktober de tentoonstelling Re/Pro/ducing Complexity, met werk van Nelleke Beltjens, Hedwig Brouckaert en Jorinde Voigt. Het werk van Hedwig Brouckaert is met steun van FLACC gerealiseerd. De tentoonstelling is tot 8 januari 2012 te bezoeken.

Rebecca Lenaerts – Trekvogels/Oiseaux Voyageurs

Het project Trekvogels/Oiseaux Voyageurs is na een eerdere presentatie bij het Fotomuseum Antwerpen nu tot 15 januari 2012 te zien in het Musée de la Photographie te Charleroi. De installatie is met ondersteuning van FLACC gerealiseerd.

Emilie Pitoiset’s body of work unfolds unambiguously and with great precision through a series of antitheses, which are the central themes in her work. Antitheses like adding up and subtracting, falling and balancing, documentaries and fiction, symmetry and repetition, magnetism and rejection converge. Each work is the result of a refined mix of contrastive elements which together generate an image with a specific tension.

Unlike some of her contemporaries, Emilie Pitoiset does not reproduce forms from the history of art. She processes fragments and removes them from their original context before placing them in a new context. She draws inspiration from a whole range of sources, from high culture to pop culture, such as Nouvelle Vague, cinema, literature and Nouveau Roman, but also from documentaries, history or everyday images and objects. Archives hold a particular interest for her. These she reinterprets and elevates to art, thereby reflecting on philosopher Jacques Rancière’s question: What is art?

As the winner of the Audi Talents Award Art Contemporain 2010, Emilie Pitoiset’s work can be seen at FIAC at the Grand Palais (Paris), where several installations produced during her residency at FLACC will be on show. FIAC runs from October 20th to 23rd.

In a bid to develop talent and create opportunities, over the next few years FLACC will be supporting promising young artists for periods of more than a year. This support will consist of setting up one or more projects, expanding the artist’s network and developing his or her theoretical framework.
Renato Nicolodi is the first artist to benefit from FLACC’s support as part of this scheme. His visual work is characterized by the use of an archetypal artistic idiom which results in concrete architectonic sculptures made to scale, fictitiously simulated images and acrylic drawings which take a look at the past and the present in relation to time and space. The spectator is invited to mentally enter the void -which is sometimes presented as a black, inadequate space – from the collective memory and to try and identify the context. FLACC has invited Renato Nicolodi to reflect on his artistic career path to date. The idea is to form a theoretic framework around the numerous cultural-historical references which occur in his work. With the support of ‘Stroom’, a grant awarded by the Province of Limburg for the development of talent, FLACC and the artist go in search of a team of coaches, consisting of theoreticians, architects and artists who are closely involved in the study. The result of this study, which will manifest itself mainly through discussions and the writing and exchanging of textual material, will provide a lasting and structured basis on which the artist can continue to build in the future.

As part of the Divine Sounds exhibition, Museum M in Leuven is showing Dioramatized #2, a vision and sound installation by Rudi Knoops, produced with the help of FLACC. The exhibition runs until November 27th 2011.

Hedwig Brouckaert – Re/Pro/ducing Complexity

The exhibition Re/Pro/ducing Complexity opens at the Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens on October 23rd with work by Nelleke Beltjens, Hedwig Brouckaert and Jorinde Voigt. Hedwig Brouckaert’s contribution was produced with the support of FLACC. The exhibition can be seen until January 8th 2012.
