From the WR archive: A Year – Chanel Vegas
Throughout 2024 we’ve had a number of writer residents join us at the MP studio in London where they’ve received editorial support, time and space to create. Over the next year we’ll be sharing their work in our monthly newsletters and on our [removed];
Chanel Vegas is a London-born artist and graduate of Goldsmiths University. As a working-class artist and a person of colour, she represents a voice that is increasingly rare in today’s art world. Notably, she was the first graduate to receive the Artist Award from [removed];
Chanel’s practice centers on transforming surfaces through sound and acts of destruction, blending physicality with conceptual depth. Recently she has been known for her trampoline paintings / performances where an NHS gown becomes the canvas, resembling the struggle of suffering from mental health and the strains on the NHS becoming privatised. Her performative work delves into the complexities of identity, exploring the internal divide, the “other side,” and the darkness that can consume us. Using spoken word and poetry, she breathes life into her sculptural paintings, creating a powerful interplay between text, performance, and form.
