Closing Event: WAKA Cinema

Three Film Programmes in One Day, Compiled by Annabelle Aventurin

For the closing event of Bijoux Cailloux and Balancing Acts film archivist Annabelle Aventurin curated a film programme on labour and the value of work.

“Since wage-labour has not fulfilled its promise of liberating the worker, this three-part programme questions the value of (our) work in a context where extractive capitalism is digging ever deeper into the bowels of the living and condemning us ‘to the degeneration of the world’ (“Critique de la raison nègre” by Achille Mbembe, published by La Découverte, 2013, 2015).”

Also on the agenda: a discussion between Guy Woueté and Aude Christel Mgba about WAKA Studio, a guided tour in Balancing Acts, a ‘pimp your jeans’ workshop by Oxfam, a DJ set with Barst and a new edition of Kitchen Stories with Mama Bolingo and Mammy [removed];

Opening Fall Exhibitions

Mark your calendars for Friday, September 27, when we will open three new exhibitions:

In Century Bingo, Bassem Saad addresses the American Century through film, writing, performance and installation. Alongside previous works, Saad presents Permanent Trespass, a new film installation developed in collaboration with author Sanja Grozdanić. This work is co-commissioned by NW and EMPAC in Troy, New [removed];

Heavy Air is a duo exhibition that brings together the distinct yet thematically resonant practices of Antonia Brown Tom Hallet. The title of the show is borrowed from a text by Anne Boyer. Air is the place where ideas form, angels dwell, storms gather and fires [removed];

In Info~Angel: The New Reform Postcard Show, we revisit the first exhibition of artists' postcards, organised by Roger D'Hondt in 1973 at his New Reform Gallery in Aalst, with contributions by Joseph Beuys, James Lee Byars, Johan van Geluwe, Daniel Buren, Wolf Vostell and Yoko Ono.
