New residents at ABA
Roman Aurelio Karrer (he/him) is an in(ter)dependent graphic designer, researcher, and cultural worker. His interests encompass design and art education, collectivism, and critical theory, with a particular focus on publishing strategies. He engages in critical reflection on the ontology of (graphic) design, its integration into knowledge production, and the associated institutional critique. He seeks to question and transcend the boundaries of his discipline and to deepen/explore new roles and methods to actively weave theory into practice and vice versa.
The practice of ‘publishing’, and by extension the notion of ‘making public’, is a recurring theme in his research. Central to Roman’s explorations are concepts such as ‘designalism’ and ‘urgent publishing’, which emphasise the political potency of design and publishing. He is interested in thinking across scales – from the character to the page, to the object, to the shelf, to the library, the organisational structure, the editorial direction, and so on.
Being in Berlin will allow him to be closely connected to his local community, especially his friends and collaborators from the Floating University. It will enable him to further develop the Floating University Press, a vision that has existed since 2019 and has become a more concrete practice in the last year.
Originally from [removed], Switzerland, Roman completed his Bachelor’s degree in Visual Communication and Graphic Design at ECAL in Lausanne and the University of Arts and Design, Karlsruhe (2016 – 2019), and the research-based Master’s program ‘CCC – Critical Curatorial Cybermedia’ at HEAD in Geneva (2020-2023). Since 2018, Roman has been involved in the ‘Floating University Berlin’, where he is an associate member. He has also selectively taught at the EPFL School of Architecture in Lausanne (2020-2023).
Damien Juillard (b. 1996, CH) lives and works in Basel, [removed];
Reconfiguring and permeating reality in fleeting and non-linear ways, Juillard assembles material through various mediums such as photography, sculpture, drawing, print, painting, scent or text. His work reflect on how technologies filter sensations and challenges notions of distance, privacy, exposure, commodification and fragmentation. Melting digital and physical times and spaces, he explores the ephemeral and fragile nature of the human body, through its perceptions, feelings and [removed];
Juillard graduated from HEAD, Geneva and completed his masters at HGK Institut Kunst, Basel in 2021.
