WIELS kicks off the new year with an ambitious survey exhibition of the work of Jef Geys.

Always critical of image and language, Jef Geys aimed to expose “the patterns and structures behind what one thinks one sees,” and encouraged self-reflection and [removed];WIELS takes this aspiration as a starting point for the large-scale survey of Geys’ heterogeneous work, enriched by documents from the artist’s archives.

“For me, the main thing is to express my problems as clearly as possible, in a form and in a manner that feels obvious. Whether it’s an object, a project, or a painting, it doesn’t matter. I try to gain insight into things, and sometimes, to gain insight, I have to make something, and sometimes I have to write it down, and sometimes I have to blow up the museum to do it. ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

After his memorable intervention in the 2017 thematic exhibition The Absent Museum, WIELS is proud to invite back Oscar Murillo with Masses, a solo exhibition that establishes a cartography of mass — liquid, material, sonic — across a large-scale installation.

“I always want to develop a practice where if everything collapses, falls apart, I can still make work.
