 workspace for experimental music and sound art

DIY’in

Suddenly reaching peak DIY levels at the end of the year: apparently it can be done. Next week we have a post-residency concert by DIY-instrument mastermind inventor Pavel Tchikov, who will reveal to us his hand-built mechanical instrument, played with motors, controlled and live-processed by a modular system. And in the weekend we’re hosting two workshops with Magno Caliman on hardware hacking and experimental electronics (very few spots are left on Sunday only).
Besides this DIY’in, Christophe Albertijn is hosting open studio days: if you are interested in knowing more about his HUIS project, or having a direct exchange with him and share experiences, be welcome to the open studio days, with coffee and [removed];And lastly, we’d like to remind you of the recordings we made at the Oscillation festival 2023. Even we are not tired of those yet.

Post-residency concert
29 November – 18h-19h – free – @Q-O2
Pavel Tchikov

Mechanical Sound Object (working title)

The intention behind the project was to experiment with a mechanical approach of music-making, besides exploring some of the synthesis techniques (granulation, spectral resynthesis, etc.). In the beginning it was inspired by Aphex Twin’s works (Druqks & Computer Controlled Acoustic Instruments, both using motor-played acoustic instruments and synthesis techniques) along with musique concrète and electro-acoustic music in general.
The current set-up is a hand-built mechanical instrument, played with motors, controlled and live-processed by a modular system. The instrument consists of a resonator, 4 motor-playable strings, 4 groups of sympathetic or performer-playable strings, 4-piece tuned brass chimes, 4 mobile motors, and 4 in-built sustainers.
The instrument has its own diffusion setup, consisting of two dml and one steel-plate horizontal speakers (the sub woofer is in progress …).

Pavel will showcase 3 pieces which are not intended at this point to be seen as a completed artistic work, but as an exploration of the possibilities of such a setup.

Christophe Albertijn – HUIS

This residency will focus on organising the material from the last 3 years since the start of the HUIS label, which consists of not only the recordings which have been released digitally, but also video images, photography, texts, unreleased recordings and more. With the aim of making a publication, these materials will be revisited and expanded in an open studio where these materials will be shown and elucidated on regular moments during the residency, creating a dialogue between the public, contributors and [removed];

Studio visits are also possible on other moments on appointment: please email Christophe at huisklank[AT]gmail[DOT]com.

Workshop
2 (full) & 3 December – 11h-17h –  @ Q-O2 – €15/20
Hardware hacking and experimental electronics with Magno Caliman

In this workshop we will experiment with the electronic circuits as materials for experimental artistic practices. Making use of simple alligator clips and batteries, we’ll modify and hack scrap speakers and motors, turning them into synthesizers, percussion instruments, and kinetic sculptures. In the process we’ll learn, in practice, basic electronic concepts such as electrical conductivity and electromagnetism, and how they relate to audio and sound generation.

From a discussion on notions such as the Brazillian “gambiarra” and programmed obsolescence, we’ll also modify commercial electronic devices exploring the practice of circuit bending, altering the circuits of devices that in other circumstances would be obsolete and/or discarded.

Workshop in English – no prior knowledge is needed for participation. Information on materials will be sent by email to the participants after registration. Registration via email at

Fee 20€ / 15€ (reduced)

Workshop in the framework of tekhnē, supported by Creative [removed];
