Meet the current artists in residency at WIELS and delve into their work, processes, and reflections through presentations, performances, and more informal discussions in their studios. On top of that, Open School invites authors, artists, and academics from diverse fields for a series of talks exploring various perspectives on a recurring theme: Sovereignty.

Helmut Draxler – The Idea of the Image: Painting and its Symbolic Conditions (EN)
Image and idea, materialism and idealism, art and culture stand in a mutually constitutive, symbolic connection. This talk revolves around a hypothesis that reconstructing these connections on a dialectical and historical level allows for an understanding of painting’s emergence as art’s leading genre, and as such the prerequisite for locating and evaluating current artistic, theoretical, and political stakes attributed to it.
