This spring, we’re happy as clams to announce a new collaboration with Kunstnernes Hus Kino in Oslo, resulting in online Case Studies & Roundtable on moving image [removed];Join us online on Tuesday 20 April from noon (CET) to swap strategies and alternative modes of distribution!

Secondly, we are delighted to be heading to Nyon again to take part in Visions du Réel with two Artists’ Work Sessions.

Lastly, we are busy bees finishing our publication, which will commemorate the project and share our learnings with you.

What are the current modes and conditions of moving image distribution
and what does the future entail?

 

MAPPING DISTRIBUTION: NEW NORWEGIAN INITIATIVES is a series of commissioned videos that invite reflections on distribution strategies in order to illuminate the variations, needs and particularities of distribution. With the participation of filmmakers Knut Åsdam, Lene Berg, Mariken Halle, Marin Håskjold, Katja Eyde Jacobsen, Nicolas Siepen, festival programmer Cato Fossum, researcher Louisa Olufsen Layne and director of the International Sámi Film Institute, Anne Lajla Utsi. The videos are freely accessible on Kunstnernes Hus Kino’s website.

 

On 20 April, the video series culminates in an online roundtable conversation, DISTRIBUTED FUTURES – ALTERNATIVE CIRCUITS FOR ALTERNATIVE FILMS?, chaired by Mike Sperlinger (Oslo National Academy of the Arts, NO). With the participation of filmmakers Lene Berg and Mariken Halle (Filmbyrået Jack, NO), Silja Espolin Johnson (Kunstnernes Hus Kino, NO), Nicolas Siepen (Arctic Moving Image Festival, NO), Anne Lajla Utsi (International Sámi Film Institute, NO), and Gaby Wijers (LIMA, NL).

As part of the In Between programme developed by Visions du Réel, in collaboration with On & For Production and Distribution, the Artists’ Work Sessions provide a platform for artists to share projects in development with a small group of invited professionals in order to receive conceptual and strategic feedback and to connect with prospective [removed];

ProjectsPsychic Island by Nasrin Tabatabai and Babak Afrassiabi and The Signal Line by Myriam Lefkowitz and Simon Ripoll Hurier.
 

The In Between Artists’ Work Sessions are by invitation only and will be moderated by Anna Manubens. In light of the ongoing public health situation they will be conducted online on Tuesday 20 April and Wednesday 21 April 21.

WORK SESSION PROJECT

Psychic Island

Psychic Island is a film centring Telegraph Island as its main location and [removed];Situated deep in a mountainous narrow inlet in the Persian Gulf, the island was made into a repeater station by the British from 1865 to 1868.

The film depicts the Telegraph Island as an ‘unanchored’ transmission node, a technological organ signalling from near and far-removed locations, with intertwined narratives, voices and sounds from what and whoever had once or will cross it.

KUNSTNERNES HUS (NO)

Kunstnernes Hus is an art institution in the centre of Oslo. Established by artists in 1930 to show both Norwegian and international art, it has since then become the most important independent institution in Norway led by artists, specifically dedicated to contemporary art. With exhibitions, films, talks, concerts, lectures and seminars, it is a major venue for art and culture. Its cinema, opened in 2016, screens a broad spectrum of art [removed];Kunstnernes Hus is owned by Stiftelsen Kunstnernes Hus, an independent artist-run foundation. LIMA (NL)

LIMA is a platform in the Netherlands for media art, new technologies and digital culture, where the discipline is actively questioned and where the field, and its position in society is reflected on. LIMA represents artists and supports them in the presentation and development of new work. LIMA also preserves the memory of Dutch media art through its digital repository and conservation services. LIMA is an international pioneer and centre of expertise in the fields of archiving, preservation, and distribution of media art.

JACK (NO)

Jack Film Agency is a newly established agency for film distribution. Jack is developed from the environment at Nordland School of Arts and Film and mirrors their occupation with the need for a rethink and rework of ways of distribution. Jack’s work is focused on spreading artist and independent film to new arenas, enhancing the public relevance of film, as well as strengthening the artist’s right of disposal of their own work. Initiators are Lene Berg, Knut Åsdam, Marin Håskjold, Mariken Halle, Katja Eyde Jacobsen, Magnus Mork, Guro Bruusgaard and curator Cato Fossum.

WORK SESSION PROJECT

The Signal Line
by Myriam Lefkowitz and Simon Ripoll-Hurier

What if we hired psychic spies to look through Silicon Valley’s iron curtain? The Signal Line will be a sci-fi documentary on the edge between divination and espionage, New Age and new tech, a film about the possibility of perceiving the invisible, of seeing through walls, bodies, time and space, and a film about the possibility of sharing these visions.

ARCTIC MOVING IMAGE FESTIVAL (NO)

Set in the spectacular Arctic scenery, next to the town of Harstad, this festival offers groundbreaking film and moving images made in the Arctic and internationally, and hosts talks, discussions and workshops. It also combines conventional film and ‘moving image’; video-art, experimental film, time-based installations and sculptures, and explores the space where the cinema and gallery meet. Its hosts film archives from the past to the future and different media (TV, film, smartphones, internet…).

THE INTERNATIONAL SAMI FILM INSTITUTE (NO)

The International Sámi Film Institute is dedicated to providing Sámi people with skills and economic opportunities in developing, producing, and distributing Sámi films in the Sámi language. In addition, the ISFI is an institute for promoting cooperation and encouraging productions with other indigenous filmmakers and organisations internationally.

NORDLAND ART AND FILM SCHOOL (NO)

On & For partner organisation Nordland Art and Film School (NKFS) is situated in the Arctic Circle in northern Norway, offering a BA in moving image. Rather than a traditional film school, NKFS is an art school educating artists specialising in moving image. This approach is characterised by a deep reflection on the language and methods used, and a critical and creative approach to film conventions. The school is also active nationally in the discourse on new methods of funding, production and distribution reflecting the growth and needs of this field of film practice.
