Despite these exhausting corona times, we are excited to announce ‘s current and upcoming programming for the spring, which aims to advance discourses and practices surrounding accessibility in the audiovisual arts.

is an online platform that critically engages with captioning as a singular artistic form of expression. The project features artists’ videos, newly commissioned texts, and a site-specific intervention on the facade of the -building.

The project can be visited online via a platform developed especially for this occasion, featuring a broad range of accessibility features, such as video transcripts and a library of resources. It can also be viewed via a physical window display at Koopliedenstraat 62 Rue des Commerçants featuring all videos of the online programme in a loop.

presents the works of artists who take an active approach to captioning audiovisual artworks. More precisely, the artists use captions to underscore this system’s limited capacity to sufficiently make audiovisual culture accessible. In their hands, captioning – instead of a medium that straightforwardly communicates information by visualising spoken words, speaker identification, sound effects, and music description – becomes a multi-layered, generative site for critical, poetic, and/or humorous interventions.

features video works by Alex Dolores Salerno, Alison O’Daniel, Amalle Dublon & Constantina Zavitsanos, Eduardo Andres Crespo, Carolyn Lazard, Jordan Lord, Liza Sylvestre, Park McArthur & Constantina Zavitsanos. The site-specific intervention on the facade of the -building (rile* entrance) is by artist Shannon Finnegan in collaboration with Sven Dehens and Chloe Chignell.

This first week presents Carolyn Lazard’s A Recipe for Disaster (2018).

Additionally, the online platform features a “magazine” section with texts by Aline Remael, Andrew Fisher, Ariel Baker-Gibbs, Emily Watlington, Grégory Castéra, Niels Van Tomme, Raymond Antrobus, and Sara Novic that reflect on captioning from personal perspectives and experiences. These newly commissioned texts aim to broaden the awareness and understanding of growing captioning culture across media, disciplines, and borders.

The public programme of includes a number of web-exclusive events named How to caption better and features sign language interpretation and trilingual captions.

The first event on Saturday 24 April is a conversation between Christine Sun Kim and me (Niels Van Tomme), the curators of the project. During this video conversation, Christine and I will discuss the necessity of captions when experiencing audiovisual art. Furthermore, we will address the changing culture surrounding captioning and explain why we feel it is important to address this topic at this current moment of exploding audiovisual landscapes and technological possibilities.

Lastly, TV 27 presents Marie Voignier’s International Tourism (2016), featured on the website until Friday 7 May. In this intricately narrated film, Voignier exposes how the North Korean dictatorial regime exhibits itself to tourists visiting it, as well as the various modes of narration, performance, and staging  needed for a nation state in a process of perpetual self-representation.

est une plateforme en ligne qui aborde de manière critique le sous-titrage comme une forme d’expression artistique singulière. Le projet présente des vidéos d’artistes, des textes nouvellement commandés et une intervention in situ sur la façade du bâtiment d’.

Le projet est accessible en ligne via une plateforme développée spécialement pour l’occasion, qui offre un large éventail de fonctionnalités d’accessibilité, telles que des transcriptions de vidéos et une bibliothèque de ressources. Il se décline également dans une vitrine physique au 62 rue des Commerçants, qui présente en boucle toutes les vidéos du programme en ligne.

présente les œuvres d’artistes qui adoptent une approche active du sous-titrage des œuvres d’art audiovisuelles. Plus précisément, les artistes utilisent les sous-titres et les légendes pour souligner la capacité limitée de ces systèmes à rendre la culture audiovisuelle suffisamment accessible. Entre leurs mains, le sous-titrage, au lieu d’être un moyen de communication direct de l’information par la visualisation des mots prononcés, l’identification du locuteur, les effets sonores et la description de la musique, devient un site complexe et un générateur d’interventions critiques, poétiques et/ou humoristiques.

Le programme public d’ comprend un certain nombre d’événements exclusifs sur le web intitulés How to caption better (Comment mieux sous-titrer), avec interprétation en langue des signes et sous-titrage trilingue.

Enfin, TV 27 présente International Tourism (2016) de Marie Voignier, mis en ligne sur le site d’ jusqu’au vendredi 7 mai. Dans ce film à la narration complexe, Voignier expose la manière dont le régime dictatorial nord-coréen s’expose aux touristes qui le visitent, ainsi que les différents modes de narration, de performance et de mise en scène nécessaires à un État-nation dans un processus d’autoreprésentation perpétuelle.

Ondanks deze vermoeiende corona tijden kondigen we met veel plezier de huidige en komende programmering van voor de lente aan, die gericht is op het bevorderen van het discours en de praktijk rond toegankelijkheid in de audiovisuele kunsten.

is een online platform dat ondertitels en captions op een kritische manier benadert als een unieke artistieke expressievorm. Het project omvat kunstenaarsvideo’s, teksten in opdracht en een site-specifieke interventie op de gevel van het -gebouw.

Het project kan online worden bezocht via een speciaal voor deze gelegenheid ontwikkeld platform met een breed scala aan toegankelijkheidsvoorzieningen, zoals videotranscripties en een bibliotheek met bronnen. Het kan ook worden bekeken via een fysieke etalage in de Koopliedenstraat 62, waar alle video’s van het online programma in een loop te zien zijn.

presenteert het werk van kunstenaars die het maken van captions voor audiovisuele kunstwerken op een actieve manier benaderen. Meer bepaald gebruiken deze kunstenaars captions om het beperkte vermogen van dit systeem om audiovisuele cultuur voldoende toegankelijk te maken te onderstrepen. In hun handen worden captions – in plaats van een medium dat rechttoe rechtaan informatie communiceert door gesproken woorden, sprekeridentificatie, geluidseffecten en muziekbeschrijving te visualiseren – een veellagig en productief terrein voor kritische, poëtische en/of humoristische interventies.

Deze teksten in opdracht hebben als doel om meer bewustzijn en begrip te creëren voor de snel veranderde captioning cultuur over alle media, disciplines en grenzen heen.

Het publieke programma van omvat een aantal web-evenementen onder de titel How to caption better en omvat vertaling in gebarentaal en drietalige ondertitels.

Het eerste evenement op zaterdag 24 april is een gesprek tussen Christine Sun Kim en mij (Niels Van Tomme), de curatoren van het project. Tijdens dit videogesprek zullen Christine en ik het hebben over de noodzaak van ondertiteling bij het ervaren van audiovisuele kunst. Verder zullen we ingaan op de veranderende cultuur rond ondertiteling en uitleggen waarom we het belangrijk vinden dit onderwerp aan te snijden op dit moment van exploderende audiovisuele landschappen en technologische mogelijkheden.

Tot slot presenteert TV 27 de film International Tourism (2016) van Marie Voignier, die tot vrijdag 7 mei op de website van te zien is. In deze zorgvuldig vertelde film legt Voignier bloot hoe het Noord-Koreaanse dictatoriale regime zichzelf tentoonstelt aan toeristen die het bezoeken. Verder wordt er ingegaan op de verschillende vormen van vertelling, performance en enscenering die nodig zijn voor een natiestaat in een proces van voortdurende zelfrepresentatie.

We hopen u binnenkort online of fysiek voor ons gebouw te mogen begroeten!
